Tornado in Italy

Check out the video of the tornado in Taranto, Italy. The twister injured at least 20 (some reports now say 1 missing and 40 injured. The tornado hit at 11:30 AM Weds. – local time (5:30 AM EST) – and damage appears to be at least EF2. Here’s a link to more video and pictures. Taranto is in southern Italy on the Mediterranean Sea. Here’s video of a tornado that hit the city in Oct. 2010.
Note: The north mid-lake Michigan buoy was retrieved either yesterday or this morning. The south buoy (40 miles west of Holland) was still there at Noon today showing a water temp. of 47.8, 3.3 foot waves and an air temperature of 35.2. The satellite loop shows mostly sunny skies across our area.
That is a big tornado. Nice video.

I see we are still entrenched in no SNOW pattern and we are headed into an above average temperature pattern! Golf is looking GREAT. All signs point towards a winter bust. SNOW lovers are in trouble and it is time to face reality. The long range models are worthless and some people will always say cold and snow is on the way even though it never happens!! Wake up people and stop living in a fantasy world!

It’s not even December. Even last year – the “Year with no Winter” – we still got snow. Not enough for the snow lovers; and it surely broke the hearts of anyone who depends on a Michigan Winter for income. So I’m just going to keep wishing for snow and you can keep golfing.

Imagine that the NOA will now be trending to the positive and neutral. Just a few days ago was a bunch of HYPE about the NOA tanking, meaning arctic air was on the way for sure! WRONG again!!
It’s NAO btw and it has been slightly cooler than average temperature wise since August 1st partly b/c of a negative NAO. Also even thought it was warm around Thanksgiving we did eventual cool down as there is some lag time. This is just one of many indices to look at.

My bad – yes the NAO – North Atlantic. My point was a lot of other people including Henry M at ACCULESS weather keep saying a negative NAO will equal cold and snow automatically. WRONG!

Take a look at Mr George lessons Winter forecast, very interesting. Below normal temps. and below normal snowfall. Come on Bill give it to us, lets just have it make a guess.
Well he has at least 1/2 of his forecast correct.
How’s that even possible? If we have below normal temps it will most likely be a snowy winter for at least the snow let regions because the cold article air leads to LES which leads to normal or above normal snow so I agree with you Rocky that he has at least 1/2 right which would be the cold part!

We need a lot more than cold air to get LES going. If we are frequently under the influence of a cold, dry (little moisture in the air) high-pressure system, which has inversion heights that are too low (clouds can’t build tall enough), then we won’t get the lake effect machine to kick on.
No, it can be cold and dry with very little snow fall. And with Lake effect it depends on wind direction and how much moisture and if there is a trigger. It should be noted that areas in Michigan have received a good bit of lake effect already this winter.

The Forecast
In general, I believe West Michigan will have a cold and dry winter, with temperatures that are below average (26.0°F, or -0.8°F for Grand Rapids); snowfall will also be below average (65″, or -10″ for Grand Rapids).

No, lake shore wont see that much. Grand Rapids is almost like a lake shore city because we get 35 inches of lake effect each year. So thats 25 inches of non-lake effect snow for Grand Rapids.
Which means your looking toward about 70 inches for you.
That’s not necessary true because Grand Raids receives less lake effect snow than the lake shore counties do so I think the lake shore counties are in for more like 75-80″
It depend where you live and the wind direction. On average you guys see about ten-20 inches more snow than GR. So your looking at 70-75 inches. Maybe 80 depending on where you live. And if the lake effect snow isn present this year, than maybe his total is coming from storm systems?
If he’s right – at least cold weather will keep the less-than-average snow on the ground? and at least the ski areas can make snow…. although, having been on the Ski Patrol for over a decade – there IS a problem getting people to go skiing when the ground in their backyards is brown….
I think I am going to have to cut my grass again after the weekend, it is still growing. I might start getting my flower beds ready.

That’s on hell of a full moon tonight. From where I am, there appears to be a hazy bubble around it. I’ve never seen that before. Not sure if it’s from thin high clouds, but I don’t see any.

Yes! We checked it out from the parking lot at work. Almost looked like a red halo around it with Jupiter just inside the halo. Pretty cool.

Coming with us again Sunday for disc golf? Looks like we’ll be making it 12 out of 12 months this year! Amazing. Maybe in 2013 we’ll hit 90 in January instead of having to wait till March like this year.
