Great Lakes Water Levels

Lake Michigan/Huron is down 2″ in the last month and is now down 17″ in the last year. The lake is now 28″ below the long-term December average and very close to the record December low level back in 1964. The other Great Lakes have not seen quite that big a drop. Lake Superior is unchanged in the last month and down only one inch from one year ago. The lake is 12″ below the long-term average. Lake Erie and Lake Ontario are both down 2″ on the last month. Lake Erie is down 23″ from one year ago, but is only 7″ below the December average. Lakes Erie and Ontario fluctuate at a much greater rate in the near term. Lake Erie was well above average one year ago. Lake Ontario is down 14″ in the last year and is 11″ below the century average. Grand Rapids had only 0.49″ of precipitation in November, the 3rd driest November ever. That followed a very wet October with 6.32″ of precipitation (3.06″ above average). Grand Rapids has actually had above average rainfall over the last 22-months combined. I have not had the time to research precipitation throughout the Great Lakes basin, but it’s puzzling to me to see such a drop when you see overall precipitation closer to average. I’ve had people tell me that they are pumping more water down the Chicago River to keep the level of the Mississippi (I could not find any evidence of that) and that the dredging of the Detroit and St. Clair Rivers has allowed more water to escape to Lake Huron. I’ve also had people ask if there is a “hole” in the bottom of the lake where water is escaping. Here’s a plot of ice cover on Lake Michigan. Here’s a plot of each winter from 1973-2002. The water level of the lake reached its lowest point in 1964 and its highest level in 1986-87…now down in 2011-12…about a 23-year cycle of late, though that may mean nothing. If and when I have time, I’ll do some more scouting around and see what I can find.

We had a wet October, yes; but as someone who’s constantly watching the levels of rivers – I wasn’t seeing the usual spikes in water depth that normally come with heavy rains. My theory is that the ground was SOOOO dry after this past summer’s drought – that the rain was soaking into the ground and not running off. The wetlands were dry, so they were sopping up any water that came along. And if the rivers didn’t spike – they didn’t deliver the much-needed water to the Big Lakes.
I doubt the bottled water companies are that big a problem, because they contribute to the “Water Cycle” – we drink the water…yaddayadda and we all know where it goes from there. HOWEVER – there are a LOT of oil and gas wells up north that are using as much as a couple of million gallons of water to “frack” with (and each well can be fracked many times). Once that water comes back up, it’s contaminated; and Michigan EPA Law says it must be disposed of in deep wells way below the depths of any groundwater tables. Essentially, being taken out of the Water Cycle for eternity. Granted, a couple of million gallons sounds like a lot more than it really is – but there are tens of thousands of wells up north; and if I remember correctly, 80% of them will get fracked. Is fracking *causing* this? Probably not – but taking that much freshwater out of the ecosystem sure as hell isn’t helping
We need to push for alternate fracking liquids, like propane, which can be used as fuel after fracking, according the Nat’l Geographic.
Here’s a map of JUST Kalkaska County. Each square represents a well drilling site; and since the shale they are drilling into is easily fracked – you can assumed the majority of these are consuming freshwater that will never be returned to us again.

But something I just noticed – when I first was doing research on this last summer, the permit application numbers were in the 60-thousands. I think they started drilling/keeping records back in the 1940′s? So it took 70 years to get to 60,000 permit applications.
Since last summer, the number of permit applications is now over 120,000. It has DOUBLED in 5 months?????!!!!!!

The Mayans have never said that the world is going to end….only that there will be a fundamental change in life the way we know it. I work for a small NON-union shop, we have not had a raise in 4 years due to business being down. We don’t demand higher pay, we know that it’s better to have a job and try and keep the shop and our jobs then try and put the company out of business demanding higher wages and more health insurance. We see how well that worked out for Hostess didn’t we! Wages will not go down, employers will not lower wages, instead employers will pay employees what they are worth. You work hard you get paid for your hard work. Right to work will bring jobs back to Michigan from Mexico, China and India!! Let’s stop thinking we are all entitled to everything WE want, and look at the BIG picture. You need your job to survive, the company needs to make a profit to survive!

It’s amazing to see what different NWS offices have to say…. Northern Indiana NWS says a decent shot at good accumulating snow next week while in GRR they say a decent shot at significant rainfall it’s amazing just peer amazing wonder who will be right?
Grand Rapids and northern Indiana are 100 miles or more apart. Different places have different weather. On Sunday it was raining here in Holland and 5 miles away it was snowing.

Just a thought… None of this should be any suprise what so ever. Prop 2 was voted down opening the door for RTW legislation. What does this mean? Afterall, was it not the people of the State that voted down the proposal? Hmmm…

That may very well be true Jim. However I have a strong feeling it gave the “green light” to at least persue RTW legislation, if you catch my drift. Hereis the language from Prop 2:
This proposal would:
Grant public and private employees the constitutional right to organize and bargain collectively through labor unions.
Invalidate existing or future state or local laws that limit the ability to join unions and bargain collectively, and to negotiate and enforce collective bargaining agreements, including employees’ financial support of their labor unions. Laws may be enacted to prohibit public employees from striking.
Override state laws that regulate hours and conditions of employment to the extent that those laws conflict with collective bargaining agreements.
Define “employer” as a person or entity employing one or more employees.

A thought on hydrology… You know, I am wondering if a warmer than average Winter would actually be a good thing (hydrology/drought) for our area if we recieve normal to above normal precip. In other words, if we have a warm enough winter where the ground does not get a chance to freeze as it would normally that might allow for liquid precip (rain or melted snow) to penetrate the soil and hopefully begin to re-energize our aquifers and re-hydrate our soil(s). If the ground is frozen there is no place for the water to go but to behave as run off. Hmmm…

The Corps of Engineers are only supposed to siphon water off of Lake Michigan at a certain rate. Are they exceeding their limit these days? I would venture to say so….just so they don’t have to dredge the Mississippi.
