Thunderstorms

December 12th, 2012 at 10:28 pm by under Bill's Blog, Weather

This is the general thunderstorm outlook for Friday from SPC.  That’s a pretty large area for December.  There’s also a “See Text” for the S. Plains.  The system coming out of the West will bring us rain on Saturday.  The pattern remains cool, but not real cold for mid-December.  The overnight NAM (Caribou) gives G.R. highs in the upper 30s the next several days with nearly 1/2″ of rain from Sat. PM thru Sunday evening.

While its a cold and frosty 27° here this AM with the sun out. And with any real cold and snow still at least a week or more away (hasn’t it been that way for over two months now???) it looks like yet another warm mid December day here with temps will up into the 40′s.

All we can do is sit and wait it out and see what kind of package Mother Natures puts under our Christmas trees will it be a bag of coal or will it be a Snow Lovers gift to unwrap?

      1. GunLakeDeb says:

Beautifully said! And since I’m headed to a snowmobile auction to buy sled #2 – you KNOW what’s on MY list for Christmas!! I hear bells – I BELIEVE!!!

  2. Question for you, Bill. Clearly we have been in a warmer winter/lower snowfall trend. I believe weather happens in “cycles” – maybe decade cycles – or even longer. What I was wondering was this. What has been going on in the Southern Hemisphere during their winters? Has it also been lighter, or have they been getting worse than average – or is there really nothing to compare to due to the shortage of land in that area. I look at this earth snowfall graphic, and I am amazed that Australia doesn’t get much snow! Seems to be all in the Andes Mountains! http://earthobservatory.nasa.gov/GlobalMaps/view.php?d1=MOD10C1_M_SNOW#

  3. Jim S.(Saugatuck Twp) says:

12Z GFS still supporting a shift to winter in about a week.

    1. Deb (Oklahoma City) says:

And how many times have we heard that and it hasn’t happened? It will not happen I am sure it will still be warm in Michigan next week!

      1. WickedTwister says:

Deb I don’t know why you bother commenting on here only to be miss negative, just rename Urself to Debbie Downer ;)

      2. Braden says:

How can you say that it won’t happen? Every single Winter in Michigan we get snow; it will happen eventually.

  4. Barry in Zeeland says:

More great news for those NOT wanting a white chrithmeth:

    http://www.cpc.ncep.noaa.gov/products/predictions/814day/

    Lookin good!

    1. GunLakeDeb says:

Jim S is saying winter in a week – your model says Rocky gets to keep golfing. The models aren’t even close!! April Fool’s Day is 4 1/2 months away – this isn’t funny.

    2. OWK says:

Only a jerk wouldn’t want a white Christmas.

      1. Barry in Zeeland says:

Right. What was I thinking. We all must conform to YOUR thoughts and opinions.

    3. Bluewind says:

Lookin good for dumb hicks with stupid first names who hate snow to live in the north.

  5. Mindy ( Mason MI ) says:

GET OUT THE LAWN MOWER!! I HAVE A FEW DANDELIONS BLOOMING !!!!!!!

  6. Travis (Oxford, MI) says:

Bank temperature downtown said 50 degrees in the sun. What a great day! Lots of golfers on the courses. And I saw a guy cutting his grass. He said it was because the dandelions were getting so long.

While I’m not seeing much arctic air, we are losing 2 or 3 degrees in the averages every week… so the snow isn’t too far off now. Even in the mildest of winters, we still see a good 2 months of condensed winter.

On a side note, I see WOOD raised the temps on the beginning of next week more in line with the others. For whatever reason, WOOD likes to keep temps very cold at the end of their 7-days and then raise them as we get closer.

    1. Barry in Zeeland says:

I’ve noticed that with WOOD as well. They always way undershoot the temps a week out, but by the time those days come, you can always easily add 10 degrees to what they had on before. I imagine it’s all ratings. Cold looking weather = high ratings. Sun and 20 degrees above normal = low ratings. Your right about the “cool pattern” they keep calling this as well. If this is “cool” for December, what would it take for them to say “warm”? 85 degrees??

    2. michael g (SE GR) says:

Right. Like the forecast for this past Monday, when someone pointed out that Wood had 35* while WZZM had 50*.

      The high was 36*.

  7. Travis (Oxford, MI) says:

And I still don’t get why WOOD keeps saying the pattern we are in is “cool.” Compared to the averages, December has been a blow torch!

Cool compared to the all-time record highs we recent experienced? Cool compared to the summer? I don’t get it. Compared to where we should be, we are very warm.

    1. DF (SE Mich) says:

Definitely cool compared to a blow torch.

      1. Travis (Oxford, MI) says:

haha that must be the reference point ;)

    2. INDY says:

Hey Travis do u have a JOB??? INDYY

  8. Cort S. says:

    THE GFS IS WRONG!

This is the forecast for 1 a.m. December 22: Click here.

For some reason the earth is still there and it didn’t explode. Obviously the models don’t handle apocalypses very accurately.

    1. Lisa (Caledonia) says:

      LOL! Good one, Cort! :)

  9. INDY says:

God Bless them folks that died today, My heart hurts hug your kids!! Let the sun shine down on them!! INDYY….

    1. Swatz_Zoo(Cedar Springs) says:

Ihear you loud and clear Indy, I’m going to definitely hold my boys longer, tighter, and harder tonight and tell them how much I love them and appreciate them and how they have touched my life.

      1. GunLakeDeb says:

Kids should never be afraid to go to school. Parents should never have to worry that their kids won’t come home from school. This is too sad….

        1. Lisa (Caledonia) says:

And teachers shouldn’t be afraid to go to work.

Lawmakers should fund high-tech security systems for all school buildings. The shooter was the son of a teacher there, and was probably known by the staff. Who knew or would have suspected he had weapons with him today unless they had a metal detector?

        2. Bill Steffen says:

Some schools do have metal detectors and they are necessary. Guns are a small minority of school violence (gangs, violent bullying, etc.)

  10. Jim S.(Saugatuck Twp) says:

12Z European model shows a major winter storm by next Thu. night/Friday.

    1. Tim From Zeeland says:

The sky is falling. Thats a week out. How many times have we seen the cold and snow NOT happen. Here in Zeeland we have yet to see the first inch of snow on the year. I want to ask, Just what is a pattern change? A one time snow that melts a few day’s later as we saw all last winter? I will believe pattern change when the snow comes and stays for a month.

    2. michael g (SE GR) says:

18Z GFS has one too. Nice!

  11. INDY says:

Yupp we all know that the pattern is going to change and its coming!! YES SNOW COLD AND WIND!! INDYY….

    1. Tim From Zeeland says:

INDYY, your not really buying that are you. lol

  12. Rocky (Rockford) says:

Get Ready – Mark it down. WEATHER BULLETIN >>>>>> The 8-14 day CPC forecast for above average temperatures is 100% WRONG! We will be having normal to below normal temps during this time frame. The pattern begins to change by the end of next week and we will be seeing accumulating SNOW and a white Christmas. Get Ready to ROCK n ROLL people!!

  13. Bnoppe says:

    A sad day in America

    1. Mark (East Lansing) says:

Yet another one, unfortunately. Am I the only one that is counting the minutes until my two blessings get off the bus so I can hold them like I’ve never holded them before?

      1. Swatz_Zoo(Cedar Springs) says:

No Mark you’re definitely not the only one, I just brought mine home and I am going to have a nice cuddle Friday Family Pizza Movie Night.

  14. Deb (Oklahoma City) says:

What kind of ass hole person walks into an elementary school and shoots!!!!! I am very sickened and saddened about this I am defiantly praying for the affected families!

    1. GunLakeDeb says:

A very sick one. I think when someone goes off the deep end that badly – there’s no defensing against it, sad to say :-(

      1. Ned S. (Now in South Holland) says:

Not sure about sick, but surely evil. Pray for the families to get through an unspeakable nightmare.

        1. big Daddy BC says:

Apparently our legislature is passing a bill onto Snyder that allows people to carry concealed weapons into elementary schools and day care centers. In light of this horrible atrocity, I hope he’s smart enough to NOT sign it.

        2. Brian(Grandville) says:

So you wouldn’t want responsible trained gun owners to be able to possibly save lives in the future, if it were ever to happen again. I truly do not understand.

        3. Lisa (Caledonia) says:

Just saying, it would have been nice if the principal or another adult in that building was armed. By the time the police got there, it was too late.

        4. John (Holland) says:

The police can only clean up the mess. That school was a bunch of sitting ducks and only an equal and opposite force could have prevented it.

        5. big Daddy BC says:

Then let’s post trained cops in schools. I would totally support that. What are the odds a bill that enables Joe Blow to carry his 9mm into the school on the off chance that he might take down a random psycho will actually work? What you’re talking about is arming the teachers or principals or secretaries.

        6. Irish coffee says:

BDBC- it’s about deterrent factor! The very reason armed and dangerous psycho lunatics don’t enter police stations or other known armed locations and open fire….they instead opt for liberal university campuses, secondary(public schools),etc..i.e places filled w/ vulnerable UNarmed individuals! If nut tard thinks any one of a # of teachers may be packing HEAT, it certainly may deter an act of mass slaughter.

        7. big Daddy BC says:

Irish, I respect your opinion, but this guy had killed his mother already. This was a murder suicide. If you’re suggesting that teachers should all carry guns as a deterrent to would-be mass murderers, that’s an incredibly radical stance. Why not just get rid of guns that are designed to kill people? It’s not always the people that purchase the weapons, it’s the people who have access to these weapons stashes. This psychopath was using someone else’s guns.

You can’t screen EVERYONE that might have access to the gun after it leaves the store.

        8. Bill Steffen says:

Pretty much ALL guns are designed to kill people, bigD. Would you take all the guns (that are designed to “kill people”) away from the police?

We need to deal with people who have a history of mental issues.

    2. Lisa (Caledonia) says:

On this I can agree wholeheartedly with you, OK Deb. :)

  15. I really like what I’m seeing in the models this afternoon, Some places in the great lakes area could get buried in snow over the next week or so. Cold looks like it might make us forget about the slow start. And all it took was a day of neg thoughts on snow and cold.

PS: That shooting today is the saddest thing I’ve seen in my lifetime. While 911 and other shooting were so bad, this just tugs at my heart !!!!

Yep the Euro shows a great storm for next week and it continues to show COLD temps for us!

      1. Sprites says:

Anyone have a good link to the EURO?

    Sad Sad Day :(

  18. Swatz_Zoo(Cedar Springs) says:

Indeed a horrific sad day! When you think your life sucks and you have it bad, just remember some one else has it by far worse! Count your blessings, love more hate less, life is to short!

  19. Mindy ( Mason MI ) says:

What a nice Warm Day !!! It sickens me that People are allowed to have ASSULT RIFlES !!!!! ONLY THE MILITARY SHOULD HVE THEM……NRA !!!!!

    1. GunLakeDeb says:

I’m not a gun lover nor a gun hater. Just a cynic – whether they’re legal or illegal – they will always end up in the hands of people who shouldn’t have them.

    2. DF (SE Mich) says:

The largest school killing was in Michigan in 1927… and no assault rifle was needed.
      http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bath_School_disaster

Listen, I agree with you, but my point is that it certainly isn’t the end all be all of any of these cases.

      1. Stephen (North Muskegon says:

I am willing to bet something horrific like this happens next Friday seeing as some people believe it will be the end of days.

        1. Mark (East Lansing) says:

I pray that you are wrong.

        2. Stephen (North Muskegon says:

I do to. But you know their is some psychopath out there who thinks the worlds gonna end who might go on a rampage.

        3. Bill Steffen says:

          Fortunately nothing happened.

    3. Ned S. (Now in South Holland) says:

Mindy, how do you define what an assault rifle is?

    4. John (Holland) says:

Second amendment, sorry. If the people aren’t allowed to have military grade weapons, the people have no leverage against the government.

Read the federalist papers. Learn your history.

  20. millekat says:

It’s hard to get excited about snow and Christmas with that horrific news today from Newton, Conn.

I’ve never started crying at my desk when I saw a news headline until today. It’s truly the saddest thing I’ve ever seen. My heart breaks for these families….what did those children do to that gunman?

You can bet I’ll go home and hug my little guys tonight and say many, many prayers for those families suffering from the unthinkable.

    1. Ned S. (Now in South Holland) says:

Millekat, I think most people shed some tears today; I surely did. I just can’t understand what motivates a person to slaughter innocent children. I don’t believe there could be greater pain than losing a child, especially like this. Yes, we should all pray for those families. It’s a tough day for America.

  21. Stephen (North Muskegon says:

I still STRONGLY beleive the ONLY guns that should be allowed ANYWHERE in this country that a person should be able to own in a hunting rifle and bow. Why the HELL do you need a hand gun or a automatic rifle? Your going to hunt a deer with an AK47 right? Hand Guns are way overused in murders.

    1. Kevin(Rockford) says:

Murder occured loooong before guns were invented….just sayin.

      1. Tom says:

NOT TO THE DEGREE WE ARE SEEING TODAY!! Guns make it way to easy to kill someone without having the chance to defend yourself or I suppose you want everyone to carry a gun including 5 year olds!!! Ridiculous comment from an obvious NRA worshiper!!

      2. Stephen (North Muskegon says:

So you want people walking around with Hand Guns and AK47′s? Stupidity and its best.

        1. Kevin(Rockford) says:

Already do, ever hear of concealed carry?

        2. Stephen (North Muskegon says:

And its a total BS law. Whats the point of carrying a gun? To do bodily harm. Don’t come back with “what if someone else has a gun” Thats why people get shot.

        3. Bill Steffen says:

So, you’d take guns away from the police?

      3. Tom says:

NOT A GOOD DAY TO START A “RIGHT TO BEAR ARMS” ARGUMENT! Why don’t you voice your opinion to the families of the 20 young victims! You need to stick with weather commentary!

      4. Tom says:

Any respect we had for you on this blog was just destroyed by one ridiculous heartless remark!

        1. Stephen (North Muskegon says:

          i totally agree

      5. Mark (East Lansing) says:

But it’s a good day to start a gun control argument, Tom?

I wish there would be no politicizing viewpoints from either side at this point but alas, the 1st Amendment.

    2. Ned S. (Now in South Holland) says:

Who the hell are you to tell anyone else what they need or don’t need?

    3. John (Holland) says:

If you truly want to know, here are some places to get started.

      The Federalist #28 http://avalon.law.yale.edu/18th_century/fed28.asp

      The Federalist #29 http://avalon.law.yale.edu/18th_century/fed29.asp

      The Federalist #46 http://avalon.law.yale.edu/18th_century/fed46.asp

    4. John (Holland) says:

So people have leverage against the government. Read the Federalist Papers, #28, 29, and 46.

  22. big Daddy BC says:

Snyder has a GOP bill on his desk that will allow people to carry concealed weapons into elementary schools and day care centers. I sure hope, in light of what happened today, he will have the sense to NOT sign it, although he’s proven to be nothing but a rubber stamp for his party.

    http://fenton.patch.com/articles/should-snyder-sign-bill-allowing-concealed-weapons-in-schools-98e8e9b6

    1. Braden says:

So basically if somebody walked into a daycare or school with the intent to kill people he could totally commit that crime and get away with it because the people inside would have no guns to defend themselves. Or maybe if a responsible adult who is trained to own a gun with no criminal record had a gun, then that crime could be prevented. Killers will ALWAYS have guns or any kind of weapon for that matter…the responsible gun owners should always have a way to protect themselves and others.

      1. Stephen (North Muskegon says:

Or Maybe all the doors should have locks on them requiring the person outside to ring a bell so it goes to the office of wherever the place is. Asking them to have a gun is just plain stupid. How the hell do you know if the teacher/daycare person is unstable and freak out one day. Your just asking for a similar event to today.

        1. Braden says:

And what just happened today? A guy walked into a school with a gun that had security measures just like what you mentioned…an unstable person should NOT be allowed to own a gun…we should always take medical history and criminal history into account before someone can own a gun. The chance of a stable person randomly “freaking out” and killing children would be next to none. If a person can walk into a business or school, he can definitely find a way to kill someone whether its with a gun or something else.

        2. Stephen (North Muskegon says:

No they obviously didn’t have security measures like these. He walked right in the school like no one noticed him. Why don’t schools have on duty officers always in the buidling? Don’t you think there is more reasonable things then having EVERY teacher armed with a firearm? Maybe just the principle should be or atleast have a REAL officer on duty. Not some bs rentacop

        3. Stephen (North Muskegon says:

Plus some people do NOT have any bad past medically, mentally or criminally and still kill people. So there goes that portion.

        4. Braden says:

Did I ever say that every teacher needs to be armed? Honestly, my point here is that having a gun that is handled responsibly and efficiently by a trustworthy individual who is trained to own one is NOT a bad idea. I’m not trying to start a fight here; what’s most important to me is that I along with many other responsible gun owners continue to have our constitutional right to defend ourselves from men like this one. If guns become illegal, criminals will still find a way to either obtain them or find another way to kill people. And on top of this, my prayers go out to all the victims and their families. Unfortunately gun ownership is very closely tied to politics and its hard to separate this situation from that.

        5. Braden says:

He’s obviously a liberal…blaming the “gun” and not the person behind it. I live in reality by the way; I dont blame guns for walking into schools and killing people.

      2. Bluewind says:

Dumb hicks and their guns are not easily separated in the USA. You got 4 years President Obama, get these evil weapons under control.

        1. Braden says:

If Obama bans guns he will take our nation another step towards communism…”The first thing you have to do is disarm the people. A disarmed public can’t fight back” -Adolf Hitler.

        2. Brian(Grandville) says:

So the guns are upping the trigger, not the psychopath holding the trigger. As a responsible gun owner, I take offense to that.

        3. Brian(Grandville) says:

          * pulling* wow

        4. Braden says:

He’s obviously a liberal…blaming the “gun” and not the person behind it. I live in reality by the way; I dont blame guns for walking into schools and killing people.

        5. Bluewind says:

I don’t care what offends you and your damnable gun,KIDS DIED TODAY because people in this f’ed up us of a have to play cowboy with their guns. How will we know YOU won’t go crazy with your gun? And here comes the gun nuts quoting hitler…

        6. Brian(Grandville) says:

I’ll let someone else take that one. I’m done. Right now I want to call you every name in the book, but I’m better than that. Cowboys, hicks, what’s the matter with you.

        7. Ned S. (Now in South Holland) says:

“Evil weapons?” That’s one of the most ignorant things I’ve heard today. The one common denominator in these mass shootings is that they’ve been committed by mentally ill young men. There should be more controls on them instead of firearms. Too many of these psychos are walking the streets because no one in authority (mental health professionals, judges, etc) wants to stand up and say certain people need to be controlled or incarcerated.

  23. Brian(Grandville) says:

Does anyone know it there will be more meteors flying around tonight?

    1. Mike in Hamilton says:

Some, it is on the downward trend now.

  24. Rocky (Rockford) says:

I cannot believe that you guys are politicizing the school shooting! Give it a rest. There is only one person to BLAME and that is the SHOOTER! This is not Republican vs Democratic issue. It is a tragedy and just stop it!

    1. Bluewind says:

Because its going on so much this year we need to handle it quickly.

    2. Paul says:

Rocky, just ignore them (bdbc and bluewind). They’re just political animals and with too much time on their hands.

Give money or volunteer to help those in need.

      Amen Rocky!!!

    4. Mark (East Lansing) says:

      Well said, Rocky.

  25. Mindy ( Mason MI ) says:

To get a handel on GUN CONTROL we need to DISARM THE NRA !!!!!!

    1. Steven T - Hudsonville says:

Hitler, Mao all felt the same way as Mindy. Thank God we have the constitution to protect us from nut cases and dictators like Mindy, BigDaddyBC, etc……and the list goes on.

    2. michael g (SE GR) says:

Never waste a chance to make political hay, right Mindy?

    3. Brian(Grandville) says:

People are so quick to criticize the gun owner, but offer little solution. A few rotten eggs ruin it for the rest of the responsible ones. Giving them a bad name. And that’s not right.

      1. big Daddy BC says:

It may not be right, but it’s reality.

        1. Bill Steffen says:

You’re climate profiteering alarmism isn’t right. Here’s reality:

  30. Mark (East Lansing) says:

Can we all just take a breath, step back and remember what’s truly important in our lives. Please be a bit more tolerant and patient with others. Stop blaming and pretending you have the answers to society’s problems. Tis the holiest of seasons. It sure would be nice if everyone would look past petty differences and respected each other.

  31. big Daddy BC says:

Agreed. In my comment above, I was making no judgements about gun owners, only that Snyder has the opportunity to deny gun enthusiasts the added right of bringing their weapons into schools and daycare centers. Any reasonable person would agree that they don’t want private citizens with hidden weapons walking the halls with their six year olds.

The psychopath today was the son of one of those teachers and so could easily bypass any security. Fact is, if he hadn’t had those weapons, he couldn’t have done what he did. Call Snyder and tell him no.

    1. John (Holland) says:

Maybe we should just make murder illegal. That will stop all killings, right?

      1. big Daddy BC says:

What’s that supposed to mean? Yes, Keeping it illegal to bring hand guns into schools will keep our children safer. Just like banning assault rifles (those that are illegal to hunt with) will keep them out of the hands of nut jobs.

        1. John (Holland) says:

You can ban all the guns you want, and people will still commit murder. You can’t stop it. The person who shot up this school didn’t have an “assault weapon” (whatever that means), he stole his mother’s legally-acquired handgun.

The UK has banned guns, and they still have shootings. And guns aren’t the only way to harm lots of people. Have you heard of the mass-knifings in China? Yeah.

People will still commit crimes, because they don’t care about laws. Gun control can’t stop a malicious spirit. It just creates more helpless victims. But at least we feel better, like we did something, right?

It’s all about feeling good. It’s not about logic.

        2. Brian(Grandville) says:

So then I guess it’s fair to assume that any given security guard strapped with a hand gun is a potential killer. That’s the wrong attitude to have toward this.

        3. Brian(Grandville) says:

Lastly, as a gun owner, and a lifelong hunter. I use my guns for that reason only. My hand guns are used for target practice, and competition uses only, as well as self protection, which I hope I never need to do. My point being, if you enter my house uninvited, and threaten me. I will defend myself, given to me by my 2nd amendment right. Prayers to all the victims, and families, what a sad day. It will always be remembered, and not soon forgotten. I hope we can move forward in a positive way to avoid this from ever happening in the future.

        4. Irish coffee says:

1)PRAY for the affected families(even devil-worshipping,satanic cults & atheists need to put aside their differences w/ God at this time)
2)If an armed adult(conceal carry)in the vicinity of this tragedy-INSIDE the school- could have made the difference in saving even ONE more victim’s life, then it would be worth every parchment page that such a law was signed on….

      2. big Daddy BC says:

It was an armed adult that committed this heinous act. He was armed with automatic handguns and an automatic rifle. If his weapons weren’t automatic, fewer would have died. If he hadn’t had access to these weapons, even fewer would have died. It’s illogical to pass laws that make assault weapons easier to possess/conceal and then relax the laws further so that we can defend ourselves against the people we just gave those guns to. We do have a constitutional right to bear arms, but that must be tempered with logic. Too many have died because of laws like the one Snyder has on his desk. Call the governor and tell him NO GUNS IN ELEMENTARY SCHOOLS!

        1. Bill Steffen says:

Let’s say there are 2 schools. One has no guns, totally defenseless. The other has the option of defending itself. Which one is the deranged, young male who’s spent years playing and enjoying violent video games going to go to do something horrible? Which one? Now, what happens if both schools have armed protection?

  32. OWK says:

What a day. I’m 100% sure gun laws will change after today. God has those kids in his arms now,so there’s nothing to worry about there.

Sam: “By rights we shouldn’t even be here. But we are. It’s like in the great stories, Mr. Frodo. The ones that really mattered. Full of darkness and danger, they were. And sometimes you didn’t want to know the end. Because how could the end be happy? How could the world go back to the way it was when so much bad had happened? But in the end, it’s only a passing thing, this shadow. Even darkness must pass. A new day will come. And when the sun shines it will shine out the clearer. Those were the stories that stayed with you. That meant something, even if you were too small to understand why. But I think, Mr. Frodo, I do understand. I know now. Folk in those stories had lots of chances of turning back, only they didn’t. They kept going. Because they were holding on to something. ”
Frodo:” What are we holding on to Sam? ”
Sam: “That there’s some good in this world, Mr. Frodo… and it’s worth fighting for. ” -LoTor
