This is the general thunderstorm outlook for Friday from SPC. That’s a pretty large area for December. There’s also a “See Text” for the S. Plains. The system coming out of the West will bring us rain on Saturday. The pattern remains cool, but not real cold for mid-December. The overnight NAM (Caribou) gives G.R. highs in the upper 30s the next several days with nearly 1/2″ of rain from Sat. PM thru Sunday evening.
While its a cold and frosty 27° here this AM with the sun out. And with any real cold and snow still at least a week or more away (hasn’t it been that way for over two months now???) it looks like yet another warm mid December day here with temps will up into the 40′s.

Question for you, Bill. Clearly we have been in a warmer winter/lower snowfall trend. I believe weather happens in “cycles” – maybe decade cycles – or even longer. What I was wondering was this. What has been going on in the Southern Hemisphere during their winters? Has it also been lighter, or have they been getting worse than average – or is there really nothing to compare to due to the shortage of land in that area. I look at this earth snowfall graphic, and I am amazed that Australia doesn’t get much snow! Bank temperature downtown said 50 degrees in the sun. What a great day! Lots of golfers on the courses. And I saw a guy cutting his grass. He said it was because the dandelions were getting so long.
While I’m not seeing much arctic air, we are losing 2 or 3 degrees in the averages every week… so the snow isn’t too far off now. Even in the mildest of winters, we still see a good 2 months of condensed winter.
On a side note, I see WOOD raised the temps on the beginning of next week more in line with the others. For whatever reason, WOOD likes to keep temps very cold at the end of their 7-days and then raise them as we get closer.
I’ve noticed that with WOOD as well. They always way undershoot the temps a week out, but by the time those days come, you can always easily add 10 degrees to what they had on before. I imagine it’s all ratings. Cold looking weather = high ratings. Sun and 20 degrees above normal = low ratings. Your right about the “cool pattern” they keep calling this as well. If this is “cool” for December, what would it take for them to say “warm”? 85 degrees??
Right. Like the forecast for this past Monday, when someone pointed out that Wood had 35* while WZZM had 50*.
The high was 36*.
And I still don’t get why WOOD keeps saying the pattern we are in is “cool.” Compared to the averages, December has been a blow torch!
Cool compared to the all-time record highs we recent experienced? Cool compared to the summer? I don’t get it. Compared to where we should be, we are very warm.

Kids should never be afraid to go to school. Parents should never have to worry that their kids won’t come home from school. This is too sad….
And teachers shouldn’t be afraid to go to work.
Lawmakers should fund high-tech security systems for all school buildings. The shooter was the son of a teacher there, and was probably known by the staff. Who knew or would have suspected he had weapons with him today unless they had a metal detector?
Some schools do have metal detectors and they are necessary. Guns are a small minority of school violence (gangs, violent bullying, etc.)

The sky is falling. Thats a week out. How many times have we seen the cold and snow NOT happen. Here in Zeeland we have yet to see the first inch of snow on the year. I want to ask, Just what is a pattern change? A one time snow that melts a few day’s later as we saw all last winter? I will believe pattern change when the snow comes and stays for a month.

A sad day in America

Apparently our legislature is passing a bill onto Snyder that allows people to carry concealed weapons into elementary schools and day care centers. In light of this horrible atrocity, I hope he’s smart enough to NOT sign it.
So you wouldn’t want responsible trained gun owners to be able to possibly save lives in the future, if it were ever to happen again. I truly do not understand.
Just saying, it would have been nice if the principal or another adult in that building was armed. By the time the police got there, it was too late.
The police can only clean up the mess. That school was a bunch of sitting ducks and only an equal and opposite force could have prevented it.
Then let’s post trained cops in schools. I would totally support that. Irish, I respect your opinion, but this guy had killed his mother already. This was a murder suicide. If you’re suggesting that teachers should all carry guns as a deterrent to would-be mass murderers, that’s an incredibly radical stance. Why not just get rid of guns that are designed to kill people? It’s not always the people that purchase the weapons, it’s the people who have access to these weapons stashes. This psychopath was using someone else’s guns.
You can’t screen EVERYONE that might have access to the gun after it leaves the store.

It’s hard to get excited about snow and Christmas with that horrific news today from Newton, Conn.
I’ve never started crying at my desk when I saw a news headline until today. It’s truly the saddest thing I’ve ever seen. My heart breaks for these families….what did those children do to that gunman?
You can bet I’ll go home and hug my little guys tonight and say many, many prayers for those families suffering from the unthinkable.

So basically if somebody walked into a daycare or school with the intent to kill people he could totally commit that crime and get away with it because the people inside would have no guns to defend themselves. Or maybe if a responsible adult who is trained to own a gun with no criminal record had a gun, then that crime could be prevented. Killers will ALWAYS have guns or any kind of weapon for that matter…the responsible gun owners should always have a way to protect themselves and others.
Or Maybe all the doors should have locks on them requiring the person outside to ring a bell so it goes to the office of wherever the place is. Asking them to have a gun is just plain stupid. How the hell do you know if the teacher/daycare person is unstable and freak out one day. Your just asking for a similar event to today.
And what just happened today? A guy walked into a school with a gun that had security measures just like what you mentioned…an unstable person should NOT be allowed to own a gun…we should always take medical history and criminal history into account before someone can own a gun. The chance of a stable person randomly “freaking out” and killing children would be next to none. If a person can walk into a business or school, he can definitely find a way to kill someone whether its with a gun or something else.

Did I ever say that every teacher needs to be armed? Honestly, my point here is that having a gun that is handled responsibly and efficiently by a trustworthy individual who is trained to own one is NOT a bad idea. I’m not trying to start a fight here; what’s most important to me is that I along with many other responsible gun owners continue to have our constitutional right to defend ourselves from men like this one. If guns become illegal, criminals will still find a way to either obtain them or find another way to kill people. And on top of this, my prayers go out to all the victims and their families. Unfortunately gun ownership is very closely tied to politics and its hard to separate this situation from that.

“Evil weapons?” That’s one of the most ignorant things I’ve heard today. The one common denominator in these mass shootings is that they’ve been committed by mentally ill young men. There should be more controls on them instead of firearms. Too many of these psychos are walking the streets because no one in authority (mental health professionals, judges, etc) wants to stand up and say certain people need to be controlled or incarcerated.

Can we all just take a breath, step back and remember what’s truly important in our lives. Please be a bit more tolerant and patient with others. Stop blaming and pretending you have the answers to society’s problems. Tis the holiest of seasons. It sure would be nice if everyone would look past petty differences and respected each other.

In my comment above, I was making no judgements about gun owners, only that Snyder has the opportunity to deny gun enthusiasts the added right of bringing their weapons into schools and daycare centers. Any reasonable person would agree that they don’t want private citizens with hidden weapons walking the halls with their six year olds.
The psychopath today was the son of one of those teachers and so could easily bypass any security. Fact is, if he hadn’t had those weapons, he couldn’t have done what he did. Call Snyder and tell him no.

What’s that supposed to mean? Yes, Keeping it illegal to bring hand guns into schools will keep our children safer. Just like banning assault rifles (those that are illegal to hunt with) will keep them out of the hands of nut jobs.
You can ban all the guns you want, and people will still commit murder. You can’t stop it. The person who shot up this school didn’t have an “assault weapon” (whatever that means), he stole his mother’s legally-acquired handgun.
The UK has banned guns, and they still have shootings. And guns aren’t the only way to harm lots of people. Have you heard of the mass-knifings in China? Yeah.
People will still commit crimes, because they don’t care about laws. Gun control can’t stop a malicious spirit. It just creates more helpless victims. But at least we feel better, like we did something, right?
It’s all about feeling good. It’s not about logic.
So then I guess it’s fair to assume that any given security guard strapped with a hand gun is a potential killer. That’s the wrong attitude to have toward this.
Lastly, as a gun owner, and a lifelong hunter. I use my guns for that reason only. My hand guns are used for target practice, and competition uses only, as well as self protection, which I hope I never need to do. My point being, if you enter my house uninvited, and threaten me. I will defend myself, given to me by my 2nd amendment right. Prayers to all the victims,and families, what a sad day. It will always be remembered, and not soon forgotten. I hope we can move forward in a positive way to avoid this from ever happening in the future.

It was an armed adult that committed this heinous act. He was armed with automatic handguns and an automatic rifle. If his weapons weren’t automatic, fewer would have died. If he hadn’t had access to these weapons, even fewer would have died. It’s illogical to pass laws that make assault weapons easier to possess/conceal and then relax the laws further so that we can defend ourselves against the people we just gave those guns to. We do have a constitutional right to bear arms, but that must be tempered with logic. Too many have died because of laws like the one Snyder has on his desk. Call the governor and tell him NO GUNS IN ELEMENTARY SCHOOLS!
Let’s say there are 2 schools. One has no guns, totally defenseless. The other has the option of defending itself. Which one is the deranged, young male who’s spent years playing and enjoying violent video games going to go to do something horrible? Which one? Now, what happens if both schools have armed protection?
