Happy Snowy New Year?

December 21st, 2012 at 1:55 am by under Bill's Blog, Weather

Click on the images to enlarge.  OK, it’s the GFS, but let’s take a look.  This is the overnight GFS model for New Year’s Day evening and Jan. 2 morning.  Here’s the 384-hr. which shows about a 511 thickness and the air coming across Lake Michigan for flurries/snow showers.  Looks like a cool and perhaps snowy start (at least relative to this month) to 2013 if this is right.   The overnight European has it basically cool and dry…an inch of snow or a little over that today and then about 2″ or 2-3″ next Weds. night.    BTW, I won’t do a sports thread, but the Lions get to face the Atlanta Falcons Saturday night (8:30 PM on ESPN – yes, that’s right, ESPN).   Earlier Saturday we have the delightful R+L Carriers Bowl followed by the MAACO Bowl.   I have Jan. 1 off, so I can stay home and see if the Big Ten can eek out a bowl win or two (four Big Ten teams play on Jan. 1).

1 It is a bad day in West MI when the GFS model does a better job on the snowfall forecast than the RDB and the EURO model! What is the world coming to?
    2. There is no question that the WORST forecast came from Henry M at ACCULESS weather.
    3. For two straight days on his blog he predicted Grand Rapids would be in a blizzard and get 12 to 24 inches of SNOW!! This was his personal forecast. That has to go down in the history books as the WORST weather prediction in the HISTORY of the WORLD!!
    4. He should quit his job and make a career change. What a JOKE! In most professions if you are wrong as much as he was you would get fired!

    1. Harry (Battle Creek) says:

No, he shouldn’t. He does a good job. Predicting weather is a very big challenge. That was and still to this day is my dream someday. Everyone can’t be right all the time. I thought for 2 days straight that we would get a blizzard too, but it didn’t pan out.

We will eventually get “our share of snow” and it will happen when the time is right.

      1. Rocky (Rockford) says:

Come on Harry – that forecast was bordering on total incompetence! Ridiculous! A mere 36 hours before the storm was to hit he was the ONLY person to make that forecast. WORST FORECAST IN THE HISTORY OF THE WORLD!

  2. Rocky (Rockford) says:

Here is the good news. The GR seasonal total is up to 2.5 inches. Only 65 more inches to hit Bill’s seasonal estimate!! Good luck.

  3. Jay M. says:

Why the heck is Gordon Food Service trying to predict the weather? I realize their trucks have to make deliveries, but so do UPS and Coca-Cola! But they leave the meteorology to professionals like Mr. Steffen. GFS, stick to making delicious cocktail weenies and limeaid drink mix; leave the weather to Bill!

it’s an attempt at a joke playing on the dual meanings of GFS…

        /captain obvious to the rescue!!!!

  4. Travis (Oxford, MI) says:

Green Christmas and a green New Year’s… nature’s last smirk in a year that will be the warmest on record.

    Looks very quiet. Zzzzz

  5. Rocky (Rockford) says:

I may need to pull the golf clubs back out?

  6. Rocky (Rockford) says:

Oh by the way how did all of Joe B’s hype and forecasts work out showing GR being in the deep freeze with about 10 to 15 inches of snow on the ground by Christmas work out? He kept showing some fancy model multiple times over the last 2 or 3 weeks that all kept showing the same thing. If that is what you people are getting to have access to his paid web site, you might as well just throw your money down the drain or for that matter just light your money on fire and let it go up in smoke!

    1. Brad says:

The adoration of that narcissist is hilarious!

      1. Rocky (Rockford) says:

Yes, it is really amazing and unbelievable to me?

    2. Travis (Oxford, MI) says:

Joe B lost a lot of followers after his latest Chicago whiff. Posters on many of the weather boards I follow are heckling him big time today.

The less we hear from him going forward, the better.

    3. arcturus says:

Not sure who hyped it more, Joe B or you.

      1. Rocky (Rockford) says:

That is funny – Not even close it was JOE B!

  7. Brad says:

We’re looking at 50s and 60s the first week of January, folks. 80s in March and 100s this summer are about guaranteed. Gonna be a tough year for farmers!

    1. Bill Steffen says:

I’ll assume you’re talking about Texas?

    2. Mike in Hamilton says:

      Are you like the anti-INDY?

  8. Craig (Holland North Sider) says:

I think we should step away from our computers, tablets, and other devices for a week or so. Then we can just let the weather surprise us. It’s gonna do what it’s gonna do regardless of what we say or want. Merry Christmas to you all!

    1. Rocky (Rockford) says:

Very logical and sound advise, however not going to happen!

      1. Craig (Holland North Sider) says:

I know, I guess I should have thrown a (being sarcastic) in there.

  9. Rocky (Rockford) says:

More good news for snow lovers. The updated NWS comments say little to no snow in the long range. This usually means that we will get hammered in the near future! I am still ready to ROCK n ROLL!!

    1. fixxxer says:

So you dont believe the long ranges but your hyping a snow event up? You make no sense as usual. Go play some golf on your xbox.

      1. Stephen (North Muskegon says:

Go back in your bunker with your tin hat fixxy mixxy.

        1. Rocky (Rockford) says:

          fixxxer is a troll!

  10. Clint(Rothbury) says:

I’m READY Rocky we should get dumped on I agree!!

  11. Rocky (Rockford) says:

For those you that are already declaring we have no snow in the forecast for next week, need I remind you that for the snow storm that just tracked through MI the GFS model about 6 or 7 days out had this storm positioned well off the East coast not even effecting any part of the MIDWEST!!!! Ya right!

    2. Mark (N.E. Gratiot Co.) says:

Not to mention, 3 or 4 days ago it was tracking it from New Orleans to west of Minnesota

      1. Rocky (Rockford) says:

Good point and that was only 4 days out!

  12. SW Kent says:

New models all pointing toward a VERY cool and dry 3 weeks.
We may be mid Jan and still be under 10 inches for the year.

  13. OWK says:

Well I guess we are just not going to get storms in GR ever again. I like what Craig said about not watching models and the weather for a while. So I’ll wish Bill and everyone a Merry Christmas now.

    1. Mark (N.E. Gratiot Co.) says:

Sure we will, rain storms, dust storms lol

    1. Rocky (Rockford) says:

Ya right and the world came to an end today!

      1. fixxxer says:

The world came to an end when bush took office.

        1. Ned S. (Now in South Holland) says:

The end of the world came when Obama was re-elected. Too bad, it was a great run while it lasted.

  18. storm waning says:

Well, checking in on the comparison storm predictions for snow fall that many bloggers made about 48 hours ago. Hello? Chance of white Christmas 95% etc? Hello?

Believe Bill S called for 3-4 inches…… Many said “oh no, 4-6 at least etc….. ‘. We got what

Oh wait let me check. Yeah Here it is…… Nada!

    1. Rocky (Rockford) says:

Yes, storm waning you did get one right. Let’s see 1 out of 100. You are batting 1%. Good job! keep up the good work.

  19. Jim S. says:

One week ago, the gfs and ecmwf had a huge storm moving through with heavy rain to snow, followed by a prolonged period of late effect and freezing temps all the way to northern Florida. At the same time, the CPU was forecasting near to above normal temps in their long term outlook. Not sure the pattern will change at all this winter.

    1. Skot says:

      Jimmy…..You da man.

    2. Rocky (Rockford) says:

And in a couple days some of those storms will be back on the models. Winter is about ready to hit with a vengeance. Get Ready – ROCK N ROLL will never die!

  20. Katie in Kentwood says:

I just came back from Canadian Lakes…what a scary drive! They got several inches of snow. The roads were iced over from the rain and they didn’t plow any roads, so it was a slick, snowy drive. I didn’t go more than 30 mph on any of the country roads. Glad to be home!
