Merry Christmas!December 24th, 2012 at 11:50 pm by Bill Steffen under Bill's Blog, Weather
It’s a cool and quiet Christmas Day here in W. Michigan. Parts of our area are seeing a White Christmas and other parts not. A White Christmas is a (rounded) inch of snow on the ground at sunrise Christmas morning. I’ll post some numbers later in the day. A very Merry Christmas to all of you blog readers! I so appreciate you coming to spend a few minutes here. The blog is 6 years old this month and continues to grow in page views. I’m working an extended shift today (and actually six days this week), so tune in at 6 PM and 11 PM for my update on the Weds. PM snow possibilities.
Overnight computer models have backed off on snow amounts for our area Weds. PM/Night. Here’s the overnight NAM Caribou/GFS Caribou numbers: Grand Rapids 0.4″, 0.4″, Lansing 1.1″, 0.7″, Kalamazoo 1.2″, 0.6″, Jackson 2.7″, 2.3″, Pontiac 3.5″, 5.5″, Mount Pleasant 0.2″, 0.5″, Big Rapids trace, 0.3″. Nothing for Muskegon northward. The European has 0.05″ precip. for G.R. – about half an inch. It gives Kalamazoo 0.14″ (maybe 2″), Lansing 0.17″ and Jackson 0.30″ (3-4″). Here’s the NAM snowfall and GFS snowfall. Looks like most of us get “skunked” on this one.
The high temperature map from yesterday (24th) shows the cold, Arctic air in place over Montana, the Dakotas into Minnesota. It’s been cool in Florida. Tampa has had four days in a row with highs in the 60s. Those four days averaged six degrees cooler than average. The warmest place to be now is South Texas. McAllen TX had a pleasant high of 82 and Corpus Christi was the warmest spot in the Lower 48 states with 85. It’s been wet on the West Coast, with 1.42″ of rain in Los Angeles and 40″ of new snow at Tanaya Lake CA. Much of Alaska continues to be unusually cold. Northway hasn’t been above -31F in the last seven days. During those seven days, the average temperature has been 30.4 degrees colder than normal! Also, this was the kicker at the end of the national news this evening on FOX.
