Merry Christmas!

December 24th, 2012 at 11:50 pm by under Bill's Blog, Weather

It’s a cool and quiet Christmas Day here in W. Michigan.  Parts of our area are seeing a White Christmas and other parts not.  A White Christmas is a (rounded) inch of snow on the ground at sunrise Christmas morning.  I’ll post some numbers later in the day.  A very Merry Christmas to all of you blog readers!  I so appreciate you coming to spend a few minutes here.  The blog is 6 years old this month and continues to grow in page views.  I’m working an extended shift today (and actually six days this week), so tune in at 6 PM and 11 PM for my update on the Weds. PM snow possibilities.

Overnight computer models have backed off on snow amounts for our area Weds. PM/Night.  Here’s the overnight NAM Caribou/GFS Caribou numbers:  Grand Rapids  0.4″, 0.4″, Lansing 1.1″, 0.7″, Kalamazoo 1.2″, 0.6″, Jackson 2.7″, 2.3″, Pontiac 3.5″, 5.5″, Mount Pleasant 0.2″, 0.5″, Big Rapids trace, 0.3″.  Nothing for Muskegon northward.   The European has 0.05″ precip. for G.R. – about half an inch.  It gives Kalamazoo 0.14″ (maybe 2″), Lansing 0.17″ and Jackson 0.30″ (3-4″).  Here’s the NAM snowfall and GFS snowfall.  Looks like most of us get “skunked” on this one.

The high temperature map from yesterday (24th) shows the cold, Arctic air in place over Montana, the Dakotas into Minnesota.  It’s been cool in Florida.  Tampa has had four days in a row with highs in the 60s.  Those four days averaged six degrees cooler than average.  The warmest place to be now is South Texas.  McAllen TX had a pleasant high of 82 and Corpus Christi was the warmest spot in the Lower 48 states with 85.  It’s been wet on the West Coast, with 1.42″ of rain in Los Angeles and 40″ of new snow at Tanaya Lake CA.  Much of Alaska continues to be unusually cold.  Northway hasn’t been above -31F in the last seven days.  During those seven days, the average temperature has been 30.4 degrees colder than normal!   Also, this was the kicker at the end of the national news this evening on FOX.

And…check out this well-done video about the old Department Stores in downtown Grand Rapids at Christmas.

    4. Brian(Grandville) says:

Deb, just wondering where near OKC you are. Watching the radar, webcams, and TWC, it still shows green grass throughout the region. Looks like the snow is just now starting there.

  14. Rocky (Rockford) says:

Merry Christmas! I have tried for about two weeks to be positive about snow and I predicted that the pattern would have changed by now! Well 50% is not bad. The pattern of above average temperatures as officially changed! Now for the SNOW, we are in NO SNOW PATTERN with NO CHANGE IN SIGHT. Get used to it :)

    1. Nathan (Forest Hills) says:

Rocky, healthy diet of snow coming this weekend according to Storm Team 8!

      1. Rocky (Rockford) says:

Ya right, their 8 day forecast has looked like this for about the last 3 or 4 weeks and our current seasonal snowfall total is 2.7 inches! We are still on pace for one of the WORST winters ever!

    2. John (Holland) says:

At least we’re around average temps now. We’re a month behind that’s all.

  15. Jerry says:

Thanks bill for working today have a very merry Christmas

  16. INDY says:

  17. Jay S. says:

Merry Christmas, Bill! I still read the Blog daily after all these years. I remember the first post I made on the blog was during a summer thunderstorm that occurred a few years back. Have a great Christmas and Happy New Year. I will be in Nashville for the New Year!

  18. Nathan (Forest Hills) says:

Merry Christmas everyone! I think it is funny how the people down south think four inches of snow is a lot. I have some cusins down there, and they are going crazy! Normally for us, four inches isn’t a lot… But given the fact that there has been nearly no snow all season, it would be a healthy amount.

  19. Mike (Mattawan) says:

Merry Christmas bill and bloggers! Have a GREAT sunny Christmas.

Chilly morning here (20 degrees) with an inch of snow on the ground. Mattawan has a white Christmas!

  22. ~Sherry~(Comstock Park) says:

Merry Christmas everyone!! I hope Santa is on his way with a snow storm! One can only hope!

    1. Rocky (Rockford) says:

Hope is about right. The only way we will be seeing a SNOWSTORM today or the next few days for that matter is if a divine miracle happens!

      1. GunLakeDeb says:

Ah – but a lot of us DO believe in Divine Miracles ;-)

        1. Rocky (Rockford) says:

I also believe it miracles, however good luck with that!

  23. Jack Martin says:

Merry Christmas You and Your Family, Bill and to All of the bloggers today!

  24. SW Kent says:

    Merry CHRISTMAS!
This weather pattern has the possibility to give us record low snow to the area.
Some models have VERY little snow thru January.
We could be at or under 12 inches come Feb 1st. February tends to be a rather dry month as more sunshine comes about and the days become longer.
If this does happen, it will be incredible considering the very mild winter we had last year.

    1. Rocky (Rockford) says:

      +100

    2. John (Holland) says:

We can’t even believe the models three days out, much less three weeks!

  25. Sprites says:

Well, turning my attention towards the weekend and early next week. Some artic air looks to try to make its way in the beginning of next week. Maybe some Lake Effect finally!

    1. Rocky (Rockford) says:

Ya right. Where have we heard that before?

  26. DF (SE Mich) says:

Merry Christmas all. We just barely had a white Christmas with an inch falling yesterday.

  27. Mike (Berrien county) says:

12 UTC GFS coming out now has a slight more northwestward track to tomorrow’s storm. Perhaps 1-2 or maybe even 3 inches if we’re lucky enough from here all the way up to G.R. Maybe there is still a bit of hope with this one for something, or yet again maybe, just like me growing up as a Cubs fan in Illinois, we’re just gonna choke again and remain under the ole’ “billy goat’s curse.” Oh well, anyways…… merry Christmas everyone!! :-)

  28. GunLakeDeb says:

No snow – but the bright sunshine this morning was nice! Hope those of you with kids at home had a wonderful morning!

    1. Brian(Grandville) says:

I t would have been nice to sleep a little later than 5:45. :)

      1. GunLakeDeb says:

LOL!! I’ve forgotten about those early and UBER-excited Christmas mornings!! Cherish it – it truly is gone in the blink of an eye :-)

  29. Jen in Middleville says:

Merry Christmas Bill! Hope even though you’re working you’re enjoying your day!

  30. wackyred-allendale,mi says:

Merry Christmas to all. Down in Stockbridge,Ga. light rain and temps in the high 40′s to low 50′s today.Hoping the weather holds out for the trip home on Sunday.

  31. Rocky (Rockford) says:

Might as well give up on any decent SNOWSTORMS in West Michigan. Bring on golf weather!

  32. Jeff Gordon fan says:

    Merry Christmas yall!

  33. Brian(Grandville) says:

Winter weather advisory extended to Barry, and Ionia counties now.

    1. Rocky (Rockford) says:

Why? No one in these counties will be getting more than 1 or 2 inches of snow and GR will not even see an inch of snow. Just mark it down as another missed opportunity! Another bust in the WINTER that will be filled with many more busts to come! Get ready!

      1. GunLakeDeb says:

I think they should call it a “Heart-attack advisory” because we’re going to be STUNNED to see some snow…….

  34. Dan says:

Getting closer to us, I still don’t think we see much in the way of snow from this system.
I sure do hope we get our chances at some big snows. We have got to be in the sweet spot sometime this winter! Our weather is VERY boring at this time.

    1. fixxxer says:

And why do you feel the need for BIG snow? Whats the benefit dan?

      1. John (Holland) says:

        It’s pretty to look at.

      2. D DOG says:

Because lots of us rely on snow as our only income for winter and can’t make money without snow

      3. GunLakeDeb says:

Most winter activities need a good base of snow. The only blessing to this cold un-snowy weather is that it puts down a good layer of hard ice on the lakes. The ice fishermen/iceboaters will be happy!

  35. Jeff (S.E. Ionia County) says:

Merry Christmas Bill and fellow bloggers !!

  36. mike[kalamazoo county] says:

    Merry Christmas!!

  37. 11 Bravo says:

Beautiful Christmas this morning at work. The roads are dry, no crashes, only a minor family squabble to tend to and not to much traffic.
Looking forward to a good Chinese buffet with the rest of the squad, and hopefully a quiet afternoon.

Also looking forward to some snow tomorrow down in Yankee Springs, I’ll throw another log in the stove, maybe spend some time hunting.

    Merry Christmas all !

  38. Kimoeagle says:

Just Skyped with niece in Tallahassee…they just went under a Sev. Thunderstorm Watch till midnite…and the radar is showing a strong front going thru e. Texas and LA right now. All being generated by a LOW that may dump some snow up here tomorrow….ahwell. Weather is never dull, is it?

    1. Stephen (North Muskegon says:

there is no watch for Tallahassee yet..

Huh – Unusual to see a Tornado Warning on Christmas day. Let hope there is little to no damage.

It is starting to look like the snow may hold off until after the New Year has begun… Figures, I bought gas for the snow blower the other day… ;-)

Came home from TC this afternoon. Had a family get away to the Great Wolf Loudge. Hard to believe that they have 9-12 inchs of snow and down here it’s nothing at all. Seems as if we are so near yet so far away from any good systems or LE snows. Sucks if you must know. At least we saw what winter can look like for a few day’s.
