The Winter Weather Advisory continues until 7 AM Thurs. (may be dropped with the 4 AM forecast) for Ionia, Barry and Kalamazoo Counties to the east.  Accumulations are 1-4″ for everyone east of a line from Holland to Big Rapids and 4-7″ for the southeast part of the state.

Both Cannonsburg Ski Area and Pando Winter Sports Park will be open for skiing/snowboarding on Wednesday.

  1. Scott (west olive) says:

Skunked again. I noticed today, our last wind storm broke off one of my wind speed cups. Bummer

  2. Tim from Zeeland says:

Dang. We just can’t find a way to get any kind of snow that amounts to anything to find it’s way here. North of us has six or more and now it’s looks likes south and east will get some much needed snow now too. What’s it’s going to take to have some snow to play in here?

  3. fixxxer says:

    And we go again.”rolls eyes”.

  4. Nathan says:

    Snow coming this weekend!

    1. Rocky (Rockford) says:

Ye right, if you call a dusting snow enough to talk about then yes we sure will have snow this weekend. Whoopee!

      1. GunLakeDeb says:

I’m deciding the “Winter Weather Advisory” for our 1″ of snow… is actually translated to mean: “Advisory; tomorrow you might see a teeny bit of snow and will be quite startled by the sight. Remain calm – it won’t last long”

        1. Matt (Spring Lake) says:

          Lol….I love the posts, Deb!

        2. GunLakeDeb says:

Thanks, Matt – I just feel like Mother Nature has REALLY been cruelly teasing us snow-lovers this year :-(

  5. INDY says:

Yaaa and a Blizzard warning out in central Indiana!!!! I see the 8 day has snow on it again for the last 3 weeks it has showed snow on it and nothing to snow about in west Michiagn! thanks synder he will not let it snow in West Michigan!!!! MEERRY XMASSS BILL STEPHENS!!! INDYY…

    1. Rocky (Rockford) says:

Yes, Indy is the place to be if you want SNOW!

    2. Rocky (Rockford) says:

      +100

  6. bnoppe(Albion) says:

Expecting around 3 inches here in Albion TMW and a little more in Jackson should be enough to white down the sledding hills

  7. Larry from Hastings/Barry Co says:

I think we will get about 1.3 inches here in Hastings. This coming weekend weather looks interesting. Looks like the SE is getting hit hard tonight.

    1. Rocky (Rockford) says:

They will not get the amount of snow that is being forecast!

    2. Bill Steffen says:

Good to see you back on the blog, Larry.

  8. Rocky (Rockford) says:

The Wednesday storm will be a 100% bust for all of West Michigan. It is crazy that Ionia and Barry counties are in an advisory! They may get an inch of snow if they are lucky. What a joke!

    1. Don (Battle Creek) says:

This is why it was issued, even with such low amounts, which makes sense to me:

EGARDING THE ADVISORY AND SOME OF THE
LOWER AMOUNTS ON THE WESTERN EDGE…CONSIDERATION WAS GIVEN TO
POST HOLIDAY TRAVEL AND FOR MANY AREAS THE FIRST ACCUMULATING
SNOWFALL ON ROADWAYS. IN ADDITION SOME OF THE HEAVIEST SNOW WILL
BE FALLING DURING THE LATE AFTERNOON AND EARLY EVENING COMMUTE.

  9. Rocky (Rockford) says:

NO SNOW PATTERN and NO SNOWSTORMS are in sight!

    1. Cort S. says:

An important thing to note, however, is that the country as a whole is now seeing a stormy pattern, and it looks like it will continue. This is definitely a different pattern compared to what we were in a few weeks ago. More locally, Grand Rapids has been getting skunked and is in a no-snow “pattern,” mostly through what appears to be bad (or good) luck. Seems like 2012 has been the year when storms of all varieties (thunder and winter) have gone north, south, west, and east of Grand Rapids. Long live the Bubble.

      1. Matt (Spring Lake) says:

Use the force against it, we will.

  10. Slimjim says:

We are London ky. The temp on the car was at 37 here. On the way down there was some snow at Kzoo all the way to ft Wayne Then from st Mary’s oh to all most Dayton there were areas that had good snow cover. Also that area is under a winter storm warning. So GR has snow on the ground to its north south west. And east. So maybe at this time there is something to the west Michigan bubble.
    Slimjim

    1. Rocky (Rockford) says:

The GGR bubble is in full effect with NO CHANGE IN SIGHT!

  11. Deb (Oklahoma City) says:

We have not had power here a majority of the day and it’s stiill out :( thank goodness for a woodstove on which most people down here don’t have but we come from Michigan so were prepared!

  12. Brian(Grandville) says:

Never in my life have I seen blizzard warnings in parts of AR, and TN. Get ready, because THIS could be the “new normal”. OH!!!

  13. John (Holland) says:

Can we do some cloud seeding in the bubble zone please? Thanks!

  14. Travis Ulberg (West of Martin, Allegan County) says:

Just got home from our family Christmas at my aunt/uncles house at Bloomingdale in Van Buren County. They have about 3″ of snow on the ground from last Friday, and had enough for the little kids to sled. They had drifts over the road that were probably 6-8″ over the east/west roads. One of the roads by their house hasn’t been plowed, and has about 2-3″ of solid ice on the road. We saw a Uconn SUV spin out in front of us because of the ice.

    1. Brad (Lawrence) says:

Crazy thing is we have very little on the ground here. Go 3 miles Northwest and there is nothing at all. I still have about .5 on the ground in my yard, but the neighbor on the north side of the road is all green because the sun hits his yard. I think the Paw Paw/Mattawan/Gobles area got more than us. Definately been a dull winter, but we did lose power for 9 hours here on Friday. It shut down most of our local schools by 10:30…early Christmas break.

      1. Travis Ulberg (West of Martin, Allegan County) says:

There was definitely a small area where there was enough snow to cover the ground. South of Allegan through Gobles to Bloomingdale had at least an inch with more towards Gobles and Bloomingdale. We only have snow in the woods and shaded areas here.

        1. Matt (Spring Lake) says:

Apparently, the Muskegon area has snow in shady and protected areas too.

        2. Matt (Spring Lake) says:

I’m in PA right now…hence the apparently. :)

        3. Travis Ulberg (West of Martin, Allegan County) says:

It’s pretty bad when our family from Grand Rapids come to our house saying “oh, you guys have more snow than us”, when most of our ground is bare!

  15. Mindy ( Mason MI ) says:

First White Christmas in 2 Years! at my House. Went up to Family Gathering Yesterday at St. Johns, only a Dusting of Snow. Fridays Storm covered all the Grass where i Live. Yesterdays Snow came down hard for a couple of Hours,Filled in Bare spots where the Sun ate some of the Snow from Fridays Storm! Had Family over from Grand Rapids this Afternoon and were suprised how much Snow we had, usually it’s the other way around!! MERRY CHRISTMAS BLOGERS!!

  16. hope everyone one enjoyed their Christmas yesterday, snow or not. Hopefully we will be blessed with more snow in 2013. Looking at the radar now it appears the storm is moving in a more northerly direction – but as always the northerly edge will probably get close to Kazoo and as soon as it hits the bubble it will go scampering off to the east…

    1. Rocky (Rockford) says:

You got it. We have a zero percent chance of a SNOWSTORM today and we are headed for the WORST winter in history!

  17. Rocky (Rockford) says:

GREAT NEWS – SNOW is in the 8 day forecast. Check this out. Chance of a dusting today. Chance of another dusting on Friday. Chance of a few snow flurries this weekend and then the chance of a few lake effect snow showers next week! WOW we might pick up .3 inches of SNOW this week and that may take us over the 3.0 inch mark for the season! Whoopee!

    1. Ned S. (Now in South Holland) says:

Why Rocky, you sound bitter :-)

      1. Rocky (Rockford) says:

        Not bitter, just sarcastic :)

  18. Rocky (Rockford) says:

    1. We are in a SEVERE SNOW DROUGHT!
    2. The CPC has us in above average temperatures for the 8-14 day outlook!
    3. We are on pace for the WORST WINTER in Grand Rapids history!
    4. We have NO SNOWSTORMS IN SIGHT!
    5. GOLF season is calling!

    1. SW Kent says:

Rocky, you are correct on 1 and 2
This is not the worst in history….at least not yet……that will be determined
      4 is correct
GOLF is not calling…….lol…..maybe in March if it’s like last year which I don’t predict.

    2. the CPC forecasts have been all over the place this and last week – last week it showed below normal temps with above normal snowfall – I think the snow/rain/storm drought bubble confuses the machine :)

      1. Rocky (Rockford) says:

There is no doubt about that!

    3. Travis (Oxford, MI) says:

Told you, Rocky ;) You switched camps too soon! No snow in sight for GR.

      1. Rocky (Rockford) says:

Yes Travis you are correct! I am back in the WORST WINTER ever camp!

  19. Jim S.(Saugatuck Twp) says:

Even the measly dusting predicted may elude me. The 6am update increased the prob. of snow and had me in the 1″ category….but the latest run of the RAP and 12Z NAM have even shifted that further east. 2″ for the season so far.

    1. Rocky (Rockford) says:

Yes this storm has been trending to the Southeast. This is why the forecasted SNOW amounts are too high. Barry and Ionia counties should not even be listed in the WWA!

  20. kevin. w says:

I agree with Rocky about our snow issues it did look like back about two weeks ago that we were heading into a colder snowier pattern. What interested me is that now were going into just a colder drier pattern and looking at the GFS (dumb model)it sure doesn’t put hardly any snow on the map out to 16 days. Even looking at the Euro model that ones a joke as well so you might as well just get a winter jacket on and go golfing. VERY, VERY BORING! I sure hope we can at least get a mega blizzard this year before we go into a no thunderstorm mode with the next season. :(

    1. Rocky (Rockford) says:

Yes, Kevin that is my plan. I will be golfing next month down in the GGR area and then I will head way up North to find enough snow to ski and snowmobile!! Get ready for the WORST WINTER ever people!

  21. Travis (Oxford, MI) says:

3-6″ of snow supposedly coming up for me today! We’ll see how much I actually get!

No real arctic air for GR for at least another 2 weeks. The coldest we get in Lower Michigan is around average temps. In fact, warmer air next week than this week.

The GR snow drought continues with no end in sight, while there’s tons of tornadoes down south.

Globally, continued record cold in Russia, but parts of Germany were in the 70′s over the weekend!

    1. Rocky (Rockford) says:

You will be lucky if you see 1 or 2 inches of SNOW and then NO SNOW IN SIGHT after that!

    2. Bill Steffen says:

Where did you hear that it was in the 70s in Germany over the weekend? I checked all 27 primary weather stations in Germany and the warmest temperature all month in Germany was 60 at Freiburg. Berlin had highs of 30 and 39 over the weekend (average high is 36).

You’re right about the cold in Russia. Moscow is 7 degrees colder than average for Dec. so far and Oymyakon in Siberia had a low temperature of -73F on 12/24.

  22. INDY says:

Getting some light snow temp 28* out thee YARDofBRICKS thee cold air is in place we just need snow and it’s coming Grand rapids will 2-4 inches out of this storm rolling Look for roads to become snowy and the sprites stay cold!! STAY TUNED…..INDY..

  23. MM(Belmont) says:

Snowing lightly here! Get ready… Always hits us when its not predicted!

  24. INDY says:

Grand Rapids Will be in the ADVISORY next model run!!!! 2-4 inches coming maybe a 5 errrr out there stay tuned …….INDYY..

    1. Rocky (Rockford) says:

We all appreciate your positive outlook however it aint happening! I think that I will load up the snowmobiles and head up North and find some REAL SNOW! The WORST WINTER EVER IS ON THE WAY!

    2. GunLakeDeb says:

Indy – WHAT advisory?? The “Caution – Snow Lovers are becoming suicidal” advisory?? ;-)

  25. Elizabeth says:

When is this system supposed to head east? If anything it seems to be rotating back west?

Maybe just wishful thinking….I would like to see my tree and lights against a white backdrop! Hope everyone had a wonderful Christmas!

  26. jesse says:

ahhh the ice is forming! That’s all I care about at this point! I have a few snow flakes falling here just west of Hudsonville, not sure where it’s coming from! could just be the winds picked it up in the back side of the low and blew it over here! haha

    1. GunLakeDeb says:

Yes – West Gun Lake is frozen and will be an ice-boater’s dream in a few days!

      1. Steelie says:

        Good Day,

        +1!

        Steelie

  27. INDY says:

Low Pressure is moveing more north then east right now the way it’s going Detroit could see rain this afternoon West Michigan heavy snow!! STAY TUNED INDYY…

  28. kcaramat (montcalm) says:

We’re getting a fine dusting this morning from the NorthEast. Must be lake effect coming in from Saginaw Bay

  29. Ryan (Rockford) says:

    Probably a dumb question, but…..

Has there ever been a MAJOR (I’m talking 6 plus inches and blizzard conditions) storm since computer models became the best forecasting tool that went virtually completely off the models’ tracks on the day of the storm (for any given location)? I can recall many times where there has been a last second shift, but it’s typically minor and usually gives us less snow than more. But is it possible (say even a 5 percent chance) that a system like today’s could give Kzoo/GR 6 plus inches and wind up leaving SE MI and Northern Ohio with mostly rain and/or little snow? Something like that would be awesome, but it just seems too good to be true!

  30. Zachary Lassiter says:

New Mesodisussion out… their expecting a blizzard right up to the Indiana Michigan state line folks

    http://mesodiscussion.com/view/20122233/

  31. INDY says:

Yupp Like I said thee snow is on the way the storm is moving north Dry slot is rolling now right for Detroit and everybody west of Detroit will get heavy snow how far north will it go we will see!!! Winter Storm Warnings coming for Grand Rapids Kzoo to thee South….INDYY…

    1. does appear to be a more northerly track than expected – could we be so lucky?

    2. Swatz_Zoo(Cedar Springs) says:

You know I love your enthusiasm Indy, but I don’t think so look at the bust last week. But mother nature has a mind of her own, there is NOTHING going on up here and don’t expect there to be.

      1. fixxxer says:

Maybe if you guys would stop listening to his soo called sprite induced forecasts he would stop. ;)

  32. SBPortage002 says:

My mom is heading to Florida today for a month or so, my brother is helping drive her her down there then coming back afterwa they get there. They are heading through Indiana. Hoping for safe travels for them in the blizzard area.

    1. SBPortage002 says:

      …after they get there…

  33. Ryan (Rockford) says:

Low has tracked further North and West, at least for now. Working downtown Kzoo….hopefully some flakes will be flying real soon!

  34. .UPDATE…
ISSUED AT 1201 PM EST WED DEC 26 2012

IN GENERAL…THE FORECAST WAS IN GOOD SHAPE AND MADE LITTLE IN THE
WAY OF CHANGES. THE WINTER WEATHER ADVISORY WAS NOT CHANGED. THE
HEAVIEST SNOW IN THE GRR FORECAST STILL LOOKS TO FALL IN THE
EASTERN SECTIONS OF INGHAM AND JACKSON COUNTIES…WHERE AMOUNTS
AROUND 4 INCHES ARE POSSIBLE. THE SNOW TAPERS WESTWARD FROM
    THERE…WITH 2-3 INCHES EXPECTED ACROSS CALHOUN…EATON AND
CLINTON COUNTIES. THE FAR WESTERN SECTIONS OF THE ADVISORY WILL
SEE THE LEAST SNOW ON THE ORDER OF 1-2 INCHES. THE SNOW WILL PEAK
ACROSS OUR AREA BETWEEEN 400 PM AND 1000 PM AS THE BEST FORCING
SPREADS INTO THE AREA THEN. REGARDING THE ADVISORY AND SOME OF THE
LOWER AMOUNTS ON THE WESTERN EDGE…CONSIDERATION WAS GIVEN TO
POST HOLIDAY TRAVEL AND FOR MANY AREAS THE FIRST ACCUMULATING
SNOWFALL ON ROADWAYS. IN ADDITION SOME OF THE HEAVIEST SNOW WILL
BE FALLING DURING THE LATE AFTERNOON AND EARLY EVENING COMMUTE.

TRACK OF THE SURFACE LOW IS WELL OFF TO THE SOUTH OF THE FORECAST
AREA…SOUTH OF THE OHIO RIVER ACTUALLY…BUT ISENTROPIC UPGLIDE
IS NOTED FOR 6-8 HOURS ACROSS SOUTH CENTRAL LOWER MI. DEEP
MOISTURE IS IN PLACE DURING THIS TIME AS WELL WITH GOOD LIFT IN A
SOMEWHAT ELEVATED DEDRITIC GROWTH ZONE. SNOW HAS RECENTLY STARTED
IN JACKSON…WITH UPSTREAM REPORTS OF SNOW AROUND 3 INCHES ALREADY
AT FORT WAYNE IN. SOME BLOWING SNOW WILL BE POSSIBLE GIVEN 15 TO
25 MPH WINDS LATE THIS AFTERNOON AND EVENING…BUT SNOW RATIOS ARE
A BIT ON THE WET SIDE. BOTTOM LINE…FORECAST LOOKS ON TRACK.

    UPDATE…DUKE

  35. bnoppe(Albion) says:

    This Date in Weather History…
    1985
Muskegon sets a daily snowfall record of 14.4 inches during a long stretch of snowy weather. The monthly total for December is 57 inches.

    2001
A foot of lake effect snow piles up at Grand Rapids as a week-long snow blitz drops about 4 feet of snow at Grand Rapids.

  36. SBPortage002 says:

Snowing lightly now here in portage.

  37. Sandi says:

Personally happy with no snow. Poor Indianapolis must be crippled since they aren’t equipped to handle so much snow. Hmmmm hoping Jan 4-6th are clear between here and PA. Daughter is bringing her oldest daughter back to GVSU.

  38. Jeff (S.E. Ionia County) says:

Looks to me that this storm is drying up somewhat on the back side . Yeah, maybe a dusting today here in Portland.. We shall see…

  39. Nathan says:

I got the privilege to fly directly above the blizzard! I’ll send photos in if I can figure out how to!

    1. Bnoppe says:

Use I report on the app

  40. Ryan (Rockford) says:

Coming down good with strong winds in Kzoo!

  41. Don (Battle Creek) says:

Snowing at a pretty good clip here in BC…..sucks that Indiana is getting what could’ve been “our” blizzard…and I would’ve had all day off work today to enjoy it. Oh well….

    1. fixxxer says:

      We dont need any blizzard.

      1. Don (Battle Creek) says:

Well, I would like to experience at least one in my lifetime, being the ultra snow lover that I am…wasn’t born yet when the Blizzard of ’78 took place, so that doesn’t count.

  42. Sprites says:

It sure would be ironic if this system dropped an inch or two of snow over much of West Michigan. Seems like the under the radar type storms always are the ones that end up producing.

    1. Don (Battle Creek) says:

That seems to be the case during severe weather season, too, especially in recent years.

  43. Travis (Oxford, MI) says:

Forecasters now calling for 4-8″ for my area (from the previous 3-6″). Snow just starting to fly here.

  44. Rumrunner says:

Bill has another thread. Storm moving north?

  45. Katie in Kentwood says:

They say no snow north of GR, but the radar shows a ton of snow moving northward and its almost to the Kent County line.. so are we going to get snow or not?

    1. Don (Battle Creek) says:

I’ve been reading that the storm may be moving further north than initially expected.

  46. arcturus says:

You be the judge. Click on the GR nexrad – http://weather.cod.edu/satrad/nexrad/

Any snow will come from the NE. If the system moves too quickly then nothing, otherwise maybe a chance of lake effect off Lake Huron if it lingers. Looks like the forecast has been pretty much on target.
