Snow on the Palm Trees

January 3rd, 2013 at 8:13 pm by under Bill's Blog, Weather

Here’s a picture of the snow falling in El Paso, Texas and a frame grab of the radar from the NBC station in El Paso.  El Paso reports 3″ of new snow and it’s still snowing.  There’s a nasty mix of snow, freezing rain and strong wind in the mountains.  The radar shows the blue color (snow) reaching well down in Mexico.   The cold air has gone far down into Mexico.  High temperatures from Weds:  Monterrey 51, Saltillo 41, Chihuahua 39 (avg. is 67), Tampico 65.  Tucson has been 8 degrees colder than average over the past week.  There were actually a couple of cold weather fatalities in Elko, Nevada.  Temperatures over the past week have been 22 degrees colder than average in Elko.   Only two of the past 10 days have had low temperatures above zero.  The lows for the past 3 days have been -14/-16/-17.  Ely, Nevada has been 13.5 degrees colder than average over the past 11 days and Las Vegas has had only 2 days warmer than average out of the last 16 days.  Las Vegas hasn’t been warmer than the low 50s in the last week. .

This is how the Chief Meteorologist feels about the middle class in this state.
Search ’2/3rds of the country with snow on the ground’ thread for all the politically charged rightist BS.

    1. Bill Steffen says:

The middle class soundly rejected Proposal 2…nearly 700,000 people who voted for Obama voted against Proposal 2. It didn’t get a single major newspaper endorsement.

The middle class knows about the Bay City Union Contract, protecting drunks and drug users (and sellers!) and about the union thugs who assaulted poor Clint Tarver, the African-American hot dog vendor.

      1. Nathan says:

        Hi Bill!!!!

        1. Bill Steffen says:

Hi Nathan…sorry for bigD’s interruption…he’s the blog telemarketer…interrupting the flow to sell you something that you have no interest in buying!

      2. big Daddy BC says:

They also rejected the Emergency Manager Law yet the republican legislature just turned around and made it a law again. Plainly you don’t care what the people of this state think.

        1. Tonka says:

Big daddy, the question arises, if you don’t like bill Steffen, why on earth would you be on his blog? Seems you are politically angry at a weather guy. We truly are divided. I say, keep up the good work Bill and bring on mother Spring time!

        2. Do you know how many times the voters in California have passed items, only to have leftist judges strike them down. 9th Circus Court

      3. Brad says:

Bill, your continued use of “African-American” when referring to Clint Tarver is racist. I don’t think he appreciates being your latest “Joe the Plumber” prop.

        1. Bill Steffen says:

It’s important to know that in the context of the racial slurs. He’s a decent man and didn’t deserve the treatment he got from the Caucasian union thugs.

Clint is supposedly somewhere under the tent with his overturned and destroyed catering equipment. The police sure did a nice job of protecting Clint, didn’t they. Anyway, you see the anti-free speech union thugs at work. And no, they don’t represent the vast majority of union members, who would never stoop to such vandalism and intimidation.

        2. Brad says:

I agree that what happened to Clint was inexcusable, but I don’t think all the references to his skin color are warranted.

        3. big Daddy BC says:

So you make the point that he’s both decent and African American? Holy Smokes, Bill. I’m sure he REALLY appreciates that endorsement from the old white weatherman.

        4. Bill Steffen says:

He probably does. He’s a nice guy. You’re a liar. You said Romney was a polygamist. He’s not. You lied. Clint Tarver is of more noble character than you.

        5. big Daddy BC says:

Are you back on the Romney thing again? LOL Get some new material. I’m sure Romney and his wives are relieved to have lost the election. Imagine how funny a gaggle of first ladies would have been. LOL

    2. big Daddy BC says:

Fact is, you publicly ridicule the tens of thousands of hard working middle class people that knew they needed constitutional protection. It is your disrespect, not your politics, I have a problem with. Michigan’s hard working middle class deserves better!!!

      1. Bill Steffen says:

I stand up for poor African-American hot dog vendors, assaulted by union thugs. I stand up for the children in Bay City that need protection from drunks and drug-users. You’re not a friend of the “middle class”…you’re a rabid, far-left shill for a special interest group.

        1. big Daddy BC says:

Which special interest group am I a shill for, the middle class? Guilty! While it’s wrong to beat down anyone and use hate language, isn’t it a bigger crime to steal constitutional rights away from entire African American communities, fire their democratically elected representatives, sell their property to your rich friends, and break all their federally protected contracts? Your support of the Emergency Manager Law is racist. Your support of the legislature that rewrote it and voted it back into law after the people of Michigan voted it down is unAmerican and racist. How dare you exploit what happened to that poor hot-dog vendor for you own narrow-minded political purposes!

        2. Bill Steffen says:

No, you don’t represent the middle class. First the middle class doesn’t care about your rants about Emergency Managers and forcing utility rates to “skyrocket”. Second, the middle class overwhelmingly rejects language like the Bay City Teachers Contract:

“The Bay City Public Schools teachers contract would allow teachers to come to school under the influence of alcohol five times before being fired, three strikes under the influence of drugs and two if teachers are caught selling drugs. The language has been in the contract since 1997.” (from M-Live)

They reject the planned destruction of the tent in Lansing, the assault on the poor African-American hot dog vendor and the racial slurs directed at him.

When you support the goons responsible for that, you’re opposing the “middle class”.

        3. big Daddy BC says:

The only one who talks about skyrocketing utility rates is you. You’re right, no one believes you. But obviously the people of this state cared enough to vote the EM law down. It’s actually ‘news’ that the republicans went against the will of the people and undid the election by rewriting the law. You’re wrong there. We do care.

      2. Mark (East Lansing) says:

        1. Mark (East Lansing) says:

Unions outgrew their usefulness decades ago. I was a UAW member for eight years. The only thing they’re good for is to defend those employees that should have been fired long ago.

        2. big Daddy BC says:

Nobody believes you, Bill, eh, I mean Mark. *wink wink

        3. Bill Steffen says:

And check this out from the Bay City Teachers Contract (this quote is from M-Live:

“The Bay City Public Schools teachers contract would allow teachers to come to school under the influence of alcohol five times before being fired, three strikes under the influence of drugs and two if teachers are caught selling drugs. The language has been in the contract since 1997.”

        4. big Daddy BC says:

Why are you bashing teachers again??? We’re talking about your blatant disrespect for the middle class and in you come with more teacher bashing rhetoric. Here’s a nail, whack it again, Mr. Right Wing Elitist.

        5. Bill Steffen says:

I’m NOT bashing teachers…I’m bashing the union for insisting on a contract that says this (from M-Live):

““The Bay City Public Schools teachers contract would allow teachers to come to school under the influence of alcohol five times before being fired, three strikes under the influence of drugs and two if teachers are caught selling drugs. The language has been in the contract since 1997.”

        6. big Daddy BC says:

Unions don’t write contracts, Bill. You should be embarrassed for not knowing that. The school board writes the contract. This provision was a school board provision that the union signed off on. LOL

        7. Bill Steffen says:

Yeah, sure…the school board insisted on protecting drunk and stoned teachers (…sure…and Mark Sanchez was the best quarterback in the NFL this season…sure.

        8. big Daddy BC says:

Sorry, Bud. That’s the way the process works. The union team wouldn’t introduce language that might injure a member during contract negotiations. The board would have introduced it.
          Get a clue, Magoo.

        9. Bill Steffen says:

The union asked for that language. They wanted to protect their drunk and stoned members, I guess. They didn’t care about the children when they wrote that into the contract. They cared about protecting illegal activity…activity that could endanger children.

        10. big Daddy BC says:

That’s illogical. A union would not need the language. The language is punitive. Use your brain, old man. The union would have had to agreed, but would never have proposed language that is designed to punish a member. It’s like the union proposing language that would penalize a member for being late or wearing inappropriate clothing or whatever. Think! The job of the union bargaining team is to protect its members, not punish them. If the bargaining team DID put that language in their contract, it’s an argument FOR unions, not against. LOL

        11. Bill Steffen says:

No one believes that! LOL! The union was “protecting” their members…the drunk and stoned ones!!! They proposed the language!

The middle class wants to protect children, not drunk and stoned teachers!

      3. Scott (west olive) says:

        2. big Daddy BC says:

Scotty, my boy. Thank unions for your five day workweek. Thank unions for your overtime. Thank unions for your workers’ comp, safety in the workplace, child labor laws, and livable wages. But I’ve got you pegged for a trailer park republican. Am I right?

        3. Bill Steffen says:

And we can thank the oil companies for providing us with the product(s) that have more than any other product provide the standard of living we have today. And we can thank the pharmaceutical companies and the doctors (who often work extra hours) for the 30-year gain in life span in the past century. Agree, I’m all for a political showdown even on a weather blog, minus the insults.

      1. big Daddy BC says:

So add something worth debating. You’ve shown us nothing but idiocracy.

Well back to weather (haha) the NWS messed this one up badly. What did they do wrong? Not notice how little moisture we have?

    1. Brian(Grandville) says:

Nathan, forget the GFS, NWS, NAM, ect. The RDB model has been the real deal so far this winter.

      1. Rocky (Rockford) says:

        ROCK on BRIAN!

  8. Nathan says:

Since everyone is way off topic today, no one will have any interest in this… But when a meteorologists gives a weather report, do they look at what the NWS says, the models, other stations, or plain data the most? (Please say plain data)

    1. Bill Steffen says:

Actually, all of the above. I spend about an hour and a half on the forecast, starting shortly after noon at my house on the computer. I go thru all the NAM, NAM Caribou, GFS Caribou, 16-day plot, European model data at Accu-Weather Professional, at Meteocentre and at Weatherbell Premium. I look at the Japanese model, the FIM, the National Weather Service discussions (usually GRR, IWX and sometimes DTX and Gaylord), the Canadian model, Bufkit…satellite and radar loops, climate data. It’s a whole lot more to look at now than in the 70s when I started.

      1. Nathan says:

Thanks, good info Bill! (I attempted to email you a cloud video btw)

      2. Tonka says:

I personally love the fact Bill you don’t let posters push you around. It’s refreshing! As for me checking the weather, I look at this blog, the 8 day forecast, and some really awesome radar apps I have for my iPad. Speaking of those radars, can’t wait to see them lit up with some thunder boomers.

Way to stand up for up David Koch’s rights. Nobody pushes rich guys around on THIS blog!

        1. Bill Steffen says:

Nobody knows or cares who David Koch is. The UAW has over a Billion Dollars in Assets and a 33 million dollar estate and 6.4 million dollar golf course:,2933,472304,00.html The unions spent tens of millions of dollars just on the Proposals in the last election here in Michigan.

        2. big Daddy BC says:

He’s one of those that funded the corporate take over of our state. He’s a billionaire.

        3. Bill Steffen says:

As I said…no one cares who David Koch is, except for a few rabid, special interest shills. I’ll bet he doesn’t even live in Michigan. I pointed out that the UAW is worth over a billion dollars and owns a 33-million dollar estate and a 6.4 million dollar golf course. The unions spent tens of millions of dollars just on the proposals…including a whopping 40K just from the teachers in Bay City! Read this: Holy cow! They could have hired another teacher with that contribution.

    2. Rocky (Rockford) says:

      Won’t happen!

  11. Bulldogvinny says:

The “Bay City contract” was an isolated outdated contract that for whatever reason the language got rolled over year after year. If anybody thinks that a teacher can show up for work under the influence they are mistaken. My biggest beef with prop 2 was there were a lot of people that were uneducated and voted based on a commercial. It was a great commercial to run because a lot of people cast their vote with “showing up drunk 5 times” drilled in their head.

    1. Scott (west olive) says:

But it was in there. If for some isolated incident did happen you can bet darn well the teachers lawyer would use it.

    2. Brian(Grandville) says:

Uneducated is exactly right. My wife was gonna vote for Hillary Clinton in the 08 election if she was a front runner. I asked why? She said “because she’s a woman”. I said, based on that logic, don’t even vote.

  13. Mindy ( Mason MI ) says:

    WOW!!! I’m a Union Member and now i am a THUG !!!!!

    1. Bill Steffen says:

No No No No No No No – not you…not 99.9% of union members! There are just a few “thugs”. I was referring to the handful that engaged in the vandalism and the shouting of racial slurs. They give the unions a bad name and lots of bad publicity and it’s in the union’s interest to insist the bad boys behave. Same thing with the Bay City Teachers Contract. With FOA, all that comes out in the open now and also gives unions a bad name. I can’t imagine that even a small minority of teachers would want to leave a teacher that deals drugs at the school or gets drunk four times in the classroom. It’s up to the members to insist that language like this isn’t in contracts. The Bay City Teachers contract has had this language since 1997…over 15 years now. It’s embarrassing to the union and certainly troubling to any parent that sends their kids to the Bay City Schools.

My father was in a union for years. No vandalism, the union members banded together to do charitable work. It was a good relationship. The union really helped their members find work and they worked to please the employer and the customer.

      1. Stephen (North Muskegon says:

I worked at meijer for 3 years and that place was terrible to work at. Even worse then Meijer was the union. Laziest people ever I tell you that for sure. The union never helped me out at all.. all they did was take my money every week.

        1. whatBillwantstosaybutcant says:

You sound like a real ball of fire Stephen.

        2. Ned S. (Now in South Holland) says:

I worked in retail for a few years in my younger days. I belonged to the Retail Clerks Union, then at Meijer I belonged to the Consolidated Independent Union. Like Stephen, my experiences with them were negative. They took my money and were unhelpful when needed. Now I see union stewards on the company payroll wandering around the facility, doing nothing. When challenged about their not being at their job station, they claim they were on “Union Business,” and get away with it. And everyone knew they were malingering.

        3. big Daddy BC says:

Didn’t you elect these ‘thugs,’ Ned? If you don’t exercise your rights, you don’t deserve them. No one’s arguing that there isn’t dead weight in any profession. The real power in a union is not in the shop, it’s at the bargaining table. That good wage, benefits, and safe work environment is what you were paying for. Fire the steward and run yourself. Man up or shut up.

        4. Bill Steffen says:

You know who the “thugs” really are? The union goons who attacked that poor defenseless African-American hot dog vendor, Clint Tarver. They called him every racial epitaph in the book, including the “n” word. Of the 8 arrested, 7 were union members.

      2. big Daddy BC says:

LOL Back pedal, Bill, you right winger. Yes, Mindy, you’re officially a union thug.
Bill says you beat up a black guy that was pedaling hot dogs and that’s why he support you losing your rights in the workplace.

        1. Bill Steffen says:

Mindy didn’t defend the thugs who destroyed the catering equipment of a poor defenseless hot dog vendor. You’re the one who won’t condemn the violence, the racism and the drunks in Bay City. That’s why you’re losing support in the REAL middle class. That’s why nearly 700,000 people in Michigan voted for Obama and voted against Proposal 2.

        2. big Daddy BC says:

Mindy’s just surprised you called her a ‘thug.’

        3. Bill Steffen says:

I did not call her a thug. I did call you a liar. You said that Romney was a polygamist. He’s not. You lied. You’re a liar.

    2. Grandville says:

My husband and I are proud Union members. We work hard and we get the job done! We are not “thugs”. To anyone that says Unions are just lazy people and drunks have no idea what their talking about. I’m done reading your “weather blog” Mr. Steffen. I hope that some day you can be more professional and keep your “feelings” on curtain matters to your self.

      1. Ned S. (Now in South Holland) says:

I have nothing against the rank and file; I was one of them. I have little respect for the officers running the union. Many of them have forgotten their roots.

      2. big Daddy BC says:

I’m sure that’s true in some large shops, but most unions are very small, bakers, plumbers, and cops, for example. Bill’s characterization of working class people as ‘thugs’ is disrespectful and contemptuous.

        1. Skot says:

          What a waste of time.

        2. Bill Steffen says:

If you’re referring to the brutal vandals that destroyed the cart and catering supplies of the hot dog vendor and called him the worst of racial slurs…or ripped apart a tent with box cutters while people were inside the tent (they were wearing union logo clothing)…yeah, then they are thugs and you’re insistence on excusing their behavior is reprehensible.

        3. whatBillwantstosaybutcant says:

The “Worst” of racial slurs? So if the union “thugs” would have said….let’s say…….jigaboo, that would have been better than the holy grail of all racial slurs……..the big N word? I see your line of thinking though. This is interesting. Here is another riddle. What gets bigger the more you take away from it? The answer is a hole, Keep on digging i guess.

        4. Bill Steffen says:

A bizarre tangent…the point is that those who vandalized and used racial slurs should have been arrested. Maybe in Berneroland it depends on who you are, but where I live, destruction of personal property is a crime. Where were the police? The unions tolerate that type of activity and they need to be called on it. Vandalism and racial slurs are despicable have have no place in political discourse.

  14. Bobblyo says:

I just read through this entire line of conversation, and I’d like to address my comment specifically to “big Daddy BC”. First, I’d like to encourage you to go back and read everything you’ve written here. If you possess the ability to think things through logically, and evaluate how they will effect others, then you will have no problem realizing how foolish you’re making yourself look. You can’t keep focused on the topic at hand, and, if you don’t like what others are saying, you resort to name-calling. In that, sir, you do NOT represent, nor do you even resemble the middle class. My teenage daughter can do a better job of carrying on an intelligent adult conversation than you can. Why don’t you leave this sort of thing to those who are mature enough to relate to others without reverting to childish tactics!

    1. big Daddy BC says:

Excellent post, Bill, eh, I mean Bobblyo. I just love it when Bill posts under avatars because the regular blog bullies aren’t carrying their weight. LOL

          “You’re” ;)

And you’re absolutely right. I’m very saddened by the disrespect this weatherman shows his viewers. I’m also, however, mildly amused about the made-up posters he and his interns are willing to use to give him supposed support. The name, Tonka, for example, and Bobblyo, LOL. Give it up, Bill. Your defense of the corporatisation of Michigan is extremist and ugly.

        2. Bill Steffen says:

          From Reuters:

“Since late November the country has shivered at an average of minus 3.8 degrees Celsius, 1.3 degrees colder than the previous average, and the chilliest in 28 years, state news agency Xinhua said on Saturday, citing the China Meteorological Administration.

Bitter cold has even frozen the sea in Laizhou Bay on the coast of Shandong province in the east, stranding nearly 1,000 ships, the China Daily newspaper reported.”

  15. Bobblyo says:

big Daddy BC, you should be cautious about using words you don’t understand, like the word ‘disrespect’. You’ve wrongfully accused Bill of doing the very thing YOU’VE been doing in almost every post. I believe the word for that is hypocrisy. Do you know what that means, big Daddy? You may want to look it up in a dictionary. You do own one, don’t you?

By the way, I’m not Bill. I’m a retired truck driver.
