Season snowfall for G.R. 7.8″ – we’re actually ahead of last year, when we went all the way to Jan 11th with a season total of 4.6″.  We ended up with 51.2″ last season.  It was sunny south and east of Kent County for much of the midday/PM, with the lake-effect clouds hanging on from Kent Co. north and west to the lake.  We finally went partly cloudy during the late afternoon.  Note the lack of snow (the bubble!) over northeast Illinois up into SW Michigan.  They’ve had above average snowfall this winter in Madison WI (+4.7″ above average) to our west and at Indianapolis (+6.5″ above average) to our south.  The winds will die down tonight.   We had a gust to 37 mph at the Ford Airport in G.R. just before 5 AM.  Lansing also had a gust to 37 mph and Holland to 36 mph.  In most areas, there isn’t much snow on the ground to blow around.    Here’s current conditions.  The Gulf Coast was chilly on Thurs. with highs of 47 at Brownsville TX and Pensacola FL and 49 at New Orleans.  El Paso made only 33 while the snow was coming down there.  We could use some sun…less than 10% sunshine in the last 10 days.       MODEL UPDATE:   The European model gives G.R. over an inch of rain and temperatures in the 40s next Thursday.  The Canadian would have rain here Tuesday Night…models quite different for the middle of next week.  The European weeklies have Michigan colder than average for weeks 3 1/2 – 4.  This from the Gaylord NWS afternoon discussion (and I am tending in this direction):  …BIG DISAGREEMENT AMONG THE GUIDANCE ABOUT WHEN WINTER-LIKE COLD MAY MAKE RETURN…BUT STARTING TO SEE SOME HINTS THAT A STRONGER STORM MAY IMPACT THE REGION TOWARD NEXT WEEKEND (13th-14th). WITH AN IMPRESSIVE  STRATOSPHERIC WARMING EVENT ACROSS MUCH OF CANADA UNDERWAY (WITH A SECONDARY FEATURE NEAR THE BERING SEA)…HAVE A SNEAKING SUSPICION WE MAY BE LOOKING AT A RETURN TO SOME QUITE COLD AIR AT SOME POINT TOWARD MID OR LATE MONTH AS THE DOMINANT POLAR VORTEX BREAKS DOWN…WITH A STRONGER STORM SYSTEM POSSIBLY BEING THE IMPETUS FOR A RETURN TO COLDER WEATHER OVER THE LOWER 48.”

You’re up very early (or late) Bill.

Pretty quiet here in the UP. Have had some sunshine the last two days. We’re at 23 degrees in Manistique and wind is only 9 mph (looks like you’ll be keeping the brunt of the wind downstate today).

Make it a great Friday everybody.

  2. Swatz_Zoo(Cedar Springs) says:

No wonder everything and everyone is so depressing and grumpy, lack of sun!

    1. GunLakeDeb says:

It’s *trying* to peek out – I caught a momentary glimpse of it a few minutes ago…LOL!!

    2. fixxxer says:

yeah it’s been a horrible fall & winter. started going downhill in august. getting tired of every day being cloudy & dreary. now you know why i hate this time of year.

  3. Rocky (Rockford) says:

Welcome to another exciting weather day – the headline is BREEZY!

  4. Dan says:

Will there eventually be any snow or snowstorms in sight? This is a very boring weather pattern. Do we change the pattern in the next couple of weeks?
BRING on the SNOW and Stormy weather. Bill, can you “hook” us up, please!

    1. fixxxer says:

FYI… bill doesn’t like snow either.

  5. TACO BOY says:

Ohhh TACO I see weather 8 is in the 40′s now next week Fox weather has been saying that for over a week now ohhh them copy cats cruunch cruunch!

    1. Travis (Oxford, MI) says:

We called that yesterday. Fox 17 had 40′s pretty much all next week while WOOD didn’t. At least WOOD changed today.

      1. Jules says:

Fox 17 weather is much more accurate. WOOD should watch their forecasts and take notes.

  6. Travis (Oxford, MI) says:

Sun and warmer temps are on their way. Get outside and enjoy.

    1. Rocky (Rockford) says:

I will be golfing by the end of next week!

      1. SW Kent says:

        Then snowblowing the next week!!!

      2. I wouldn’t get to pumped up about that, maybe Tuesday

  7. big Daddy BC says:

OMG. Bill actually put liberal wind generators his thread. Must be he got in trouble with the boss. LOL I think they’re having a snowball fight down in hell right now.

    1. haanstar says:

Why is a wind gererator liberal?

      1. Ned S. (Now in South Holland) says:

Yes, I prefer the conservative wind generators.

        1. Bill Steffen says:

Me too, and the wind turbines in the picture here are conservative wind turbines! (I’m not against wind energy…I just want people to realize the cost and the limitations).

      2. big Daddy BC says:

GGGreat question. Seems like conserving energy should be a conservative thing to do. I’m just messin’ with Bill. He seems to reject all things green.

        1. Bill Steffen says:

I don’t, but I noticed that red is your color, from that Little Red Book to Red Square to the red ink that results from all the bloated spending that you want the country to drowned in to the red color of your face as you display your inward anger that your obvious intelligence and insight is not held in appropriate esteem by those who comment on the blog.

        2. big Daddy BC says:

That’s funny. Yeah, your conservative fan club is really trying, but equally I see many very unhappy with the way you talk about labor, education, and government in general. Personally, Bill, I couldn’t give a rat’s asterisk what Ned or michael g thinks about my positions. But for you, I know it’s very different. You’re out there personally. This is your legacy in a way. People’s opinions about the kind of man you are, the way you lived your life and used your celebrity are undoubtedly important to you. I hate to see that popularity waver like it has, but like so many have said on here, isn’t it about time you stop with the political talk and concentrate on weather.

        3. Bill Steffen says:

Look who’s talking…the guy who lied about Romney being a polygamist. LOL!!!

        4. Tonka says:

Big daddy, what is seriously your beef? You troll around these blogs hoping to all hope, to find something bill said and pounce! Why are you such an angry person? It’s not good for your spirit at all. You strive so hard to have your comments validated by anyone, just anyone! You take it to the point of advocating that bill also posts to your comments under a different name. It’s quite sad to read. Why would he possibly waste his time? Seriously man, find some peace, get some candles, drink a beer, just relax!

    2. SW Kent says:

big Daddy…….I got to say it…….you are quite the tool…..

      1. big Daddy BC says:

        Your wife been talking again.

        1. Bill Steffen says:

And now in Korea: “A prolonged cold spell sent the mercury plummeting nationwide on Thursday, with temperatures dropping to their lowest levels in decades, the country’s weather agency said.”

        2. Tonka says:

See big daddy, you are not making friends here. Is that your goal or are you just trying once again for validation? What pains you in real life that pleasure is derived from being rude, arrogant, and childish online?

    3. Mark (East Lansing) says:

      1. Ned S. (Now in South Holland) says:

  18. Travis Ulberg (West of Martin, Allegan County) says:

Since last week Wednesday we had 4 snow “events”. 2 of those events Allegan County was issued a WWA, the other 2 we had nothing. During those 2 advisories we received 0.25″, and a trace. During the 2 events without an advisory we received 3.8″, and 1.5″. At least they are consistent lol.

And on a side note, it’s looking nasty next week. Warm temps, rain, and frozen ground is never a good mix.

    1. Rocky (Rockford) says:

Yes, NWS has been a joke so far this winter. People are to the point that they plan for the opposite of their predictions!

      1. fixxxer says:

Rj you should of learned this long ago.

  19. Rocky (Rockford) says:

As for all of the talk/hype about the “cold and snow is coming” about mid month. I will believe when it actually arrives. I have been hearing this BS from the experts and the long range models for a good 6 or 7 weeks now and it has never materialized! When the RDB model shows it then I might start taking it seriously!! In the meantime I am planning to golf this coming Wednesday afternoon in GR!

    1. fixxxer says:

There is no golf when theres snow on the ground so give it up.

      1. Rocky (Rockford) says:

I figure that our whopping inch of snow will start to melt by Monday and then by Wednesday afternoon I will be GOLFING! ROCK ON!

        1. Jack says:

Well, Well,Well… The JEM model is Still Showing, A HUGE Snow Storm !! For The Week of 2/4/ 13, Keep It Here, For UPDATES…. ;-)

  20. fixxxer says:

The 40′s & 50′s are welcome by me at this point.

  21. Larry from Hastings/Barry Co says:

One day soon, I am sure we will get our first big snow storm. I have been sick in bed. I think once the temp stays colder and we get more snow, people will feel better. The reason why I am against wind/solar energy, it’s not dependable and very costly.

    1. Brian(Grandville) says:

And loud. I’ve heard stories of people having to relocate, due to the noise pollution these things create.

  25. Rocky (Rockford) says:

What a joke. ACCULESS weather is saying “brutal cold wave ready to hit the US the third week of January”! What HYPE and utter nonsense. They have been wrong with ALL of their long range fantasy predictions. Between Joe B and ACCULESS weather they have been the biggest promoters of totally inaccurate long range weather predictions this winter and last winter for that matter! Just ridiculous statements!

This link seems fitting for the topic. This table is reflective of a five state area. This is real time data. Sometimes you can look at a clipper or a low pressure moving into our area from the Northwest and see HUGE amounts of power being generated by the energy of weather.

The power produced has to be utilized at the exact moment it is generated. This can be a real challenge for area power controllers, so a real asset to the controllers is this nifty little invention.

A lot of people mistake this for a garbage dump South of Ludington Mi. But what it really is, is a good deal for anyone in the state with electric service. This facility allows Consumers Energy to take advantage of inexpensive power (mainly at night) and store it in the form of water up into the reservoir. Then during the day, or times of high demand, water is released back into the lake through the same equipment used to pump it up there. Thus allowing the storage of some of the wind energy that is now being produced by the wind farm South of Ludington. In a five State area surrounding the Great Lakes, there is about 17,500 MW of nameplate capacity wind power. That is a lot of juice. The power output from the wind farm in Ludington is about 100 MW.

    1. Mark (East Lansing) says:

Thanks for the link and info. I’d seen it in years past but never knew what it really was. Pretty ingenious.
