Icy Spots

January 6th, 2013 at 7:15 pm by under Bill's Blog, Weather

Watch out for icy spots in parking lots, on sidewalks and on lesser traveled roads Monday AM.  As skies clear, we may have some frost to scrape off the car in the early morning.  Look for partly to mostly sunny skies Monday with afternoon temperatures in the mid 30s.  It’ll be a little breezy and that will make it feel a little cool.  The January thaw is a certainty.  Both the GFS (56) and European (54) take our temperatures to the mid 50s either Friday or Friday night.  Both models print out 1/2-1″ of rain from late Thursday into Saturday.  Both models have significantly colder air moving in next Sunday.  The GFS has it’s usual Arctic plunge with temperatures headed below zero from the 18th to 20th.   There’s a chance of severe thunderstorms in Texas.  Also, an all-time heat record for Hobart, Austraia at 107 degrees and “unusual cold weather” in northern Japan with record snow at 18 locations.   Also, the Statue of Liberty will likely remain closed until summer because of damage from Hurricane Sandy.

  11. Travis (Oxford, MI) says:

Last run of ECMWF has pretty much eliminated the big forecasted decline in NAO.

Colder air is coming after our big warm up, but I’m still not seeing much verified Arctic air for the eastern third of the country. Simply back to the 20′s and 30′s.

We’ll see how far east the cold air pushes and whether it can make a big dent in the big ridge giving warmth to the east.

In the meantime, enjoy the mild temps the next week and a half!

    1. Jim S.(Saugatuck Twp) says:

Once again, we get teased. Gfs looking more like a glancing blow of arctic air instead of a full scale pattern change. Two rainy systems, then a clipper perhaps…but not much else. My 3.5″ of snow for the season doesn’t look to budge much.

      1. Ned S. (Now in South Holland) says:

Shh. Don’t tell Rocky. He’ll go berserk :-)

  12. DF (SE Mich) says:

We had a good run of snow on the ground and below normal temperatures. Time to bring on the rain to help the great lakes.

    1. Travis (Oxford, MI) says:

Over the weekend, Chicago broke a 73 year old record. 314 consecutive days and counting without a 1″ snow depth.

      1. SlimJim NW GR (1) says:

and another week or more can still be added to that number.

      2. DF (SE Mich) says:

Their water flows to the Mississippi River so I’m glad the precipitation is falling elsewhere =)

  13. SlimJim NW GR (1) says:

Looks like a nice warm up on its way with what??? Thunderstorms! You know this is looking more and more like it could be yet another nice mild winter in our neck of the woods. However that said it still could be a so called back loaded winter and may a backwards spring. Any bets on a white Easter? I see the sun spot activity is running high.

The most snow I have seen this winter (and last winter) was in south central Ohio from north of Dayton to south of Ft Wayne,IN in that area there was at least 5 to 6 inches of snow on the ground and there were drifts and the spots where they plowed the roads there piles were over two feet high so there was some wind. From north of Ft Wayne all the way to GR there is not much snow cover so it will melt quickly and we should be snow cover free later this week. Other then the chance of thunderstorms one other event to look for is a chance of record high temps. I have to say while it could be warmer so far this has been a nice mild winter.

    1. Travis (Oxford, MI) says:

Yep, last week was the coldest week GR has seen, and yet it still ended up being warmer than average!

All this talk of “cold air is coming” sure has been silly and incredibly inaccurate.

  14. Storm waning says:

    Cold and snowy mid January?

    That’s a good one!

I say, since there is no winter. Bring on the 50s.

“Winter” is two and a half weeks old and it’s already thawing? How long did it “freeze”? Five days?

    1. Travis (Oxford, MI) says:

The “coldest” air GR saw was 27,27,30 wedged in the middle of two days that were +3-5 above average. A real cold freeze ;)

      1. Irish coffee says:

“Bring on the 50′s”? seriously?…other than Elvis and Chevy’s- WAY overrated..BRING back the 80′s w/a side of late 70′s/ Charlie’s ANGELS in the outfield- of UNdry dreams!!

  15. Jim S.(Saugatuck Twp) says:

12z gfs doesn’t offer up much hope for snow. The arctic air doesn’t appear to make as much of a push south.
