Daylight Increasing

January 7th, 2013 at 5:46 pm by under Bill's Blog, Weather

Lake Michigan sunset by “Jan” at ReportIt.  Click here to see the picture full screen.  Today (Monday) was the sunniest day in the last 1/2 month (back to 12/22) and only the 5th day in the last 39 days with more than 50% sunshine.  We have already gained 13 minutes of daylight in the evening and will continue to gain a minute per day in the evening as we head into mid-January.  BTW, the temperature sensor at the Battle Creek Airport is not working properly.  Also:  Check out the plane moving across the sun complete with sunspots!…and the Aurora Borealis in Inari, Finland.

18Z GFS has it back to rain and warm in two weeks after the brief cool down.

    1. Matt (Spring Lake) says:

I saw that too. It looks like a brief, but strong warmup. Who knows…the 00Z could have it back to zero degrees…

  2. Matt (Spring Lake) says:

Hmm, WZZM is calling for above average temps next week now. Where is the cold air?

  3. SlimJim NW GR (1) says:

You know its been almost two years sense we have had back to back days with highs under 20° (we only had one day all last winter) and the coldest its been so far this winter has been 17° and there has only been 3 days where GR stayed below 30°
Also even if it we do turn cold in the next two week it still looks dry so if we get any snow it more likely then not will have to be mostly lake effect and GR dose not do well with a NW lake effect flow. Bottom line is unless we get some big late season snow storms GR might have a hard time getting as much snow as last year and we could be looking at a sub 40 inch snow fall winter. (my guess is that we will get a big storm or more late season like late February and March and maybe April lets hope not)
    Of course all could change.

    1. Matt (Spring Lake) says:

Hmm, I wonder if Muskegon has even gotten into the teens. I don’t think we have.

      1. Bill Steffen says:

Muskegon was 19 on 2/25 and 2/28…G.R. has been into the teens 6 times. Baldwin was +5 on 1/7.

        1. Matt (Spring Lake) says:

Thanks, Bill. I was referring strictly to this winter though.

      2. Brad says:

I noticed that Muskegon had its warmest year on record in 2012. #2 is 1998 and #3 is 2010.

    2. fixxxer says:

Im not overly concerned with any major snow come late march or april.

A personal favorite: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xBp5nCUopb8 It got me thru all the B.S. from Paul Ehrlich that I had to read while I was in college.

Paul Ehrlich, the inventor of chemotherapy?

        5. Bill Steffen says:

Ehrlich’s book was nonsense and it’s amazing that so many people paid good money to go to college and learn something that plain and simply wasn’t true…a total waste of time.

One more item, while some may disagree on the write up, none the less the fact is Chicago is about to set a new low snow record.

Note the the reason given for Lake Michigan water level falling. Any ideas on the lack of a ice up?? Not sure if I can buy that one.

  6. Travis Ulberg (West of Martin, Allegan County) says:

Looks like we are going to be stuck on 7.5″ of seasonal snowfall for awhile. We still have 2-3″ of snow depth. 5 miles to our north, east, and south all have bare ground.

Well with today being the 8th of January, this ties our latest date we’ve ever had to wait to snowmobile on the local trails. We are going to crush that record this year. Any idea of when we would have enough snow(6″+) to snowmobile?

    1. Matt (Spring Lake) says:

Wow…it is going to be one short sled season, if we even get one.

      1. Travis Ulberg (West of Martin, Allegan County) says:

Looking at the long range forecast, we don’t even have a chance of getting enough snow to snowmobile. That basically takes us to the last week of January. The first few weeks of February are usually our best snowmobiling weeks since it’s coldest, but without snow it could be 10° and not matter.
