A Polar Vortex is a large and strong cyclone near the Pole. A true Polar Vortex is a mid-upper Troposphere phenomena. They’re big…often a thousand miles across. There are usually weaker in summer and stronger in winter. There are often two of them…one in far NE Canada and the other over northern Asia. A strong Polar Vortex can lead to a fairly strong jet.
