2 PM Friday. Just a few sprinkles/drizzle left. In the last hour…Grand Rapids is down 1 deg. to 52, Holland is down 3 deg. in the last 2 hours. S. Haven is 50 and down 4 in the last 2 hours (wind is turning more off Lake Michigan). It’s 54 in Kalamazoo, down 1 deg. in the last hour. It’s very foggy in Big Rapids. Big Rapids is up 5 deg. in the last 2 hours to 43. Vicksburg, Ionia and Alma have had over an inch of rain. Other rainfall totals: 0.98″ Muskegon, 0.85″ Kalamazoo, 0.74″ Grand Rapids, 0.73″ Holland, 0.72″ Battle Creek. For current Michigan weather observations and wind speeds, click here. Very intense stratospheric warming event going on that’s usually a sign of a major arctic outbreak coming for someone/somewhere in the U.S. I see some models have the AO going to -6 and the NAO going to -4 so maybe toward the northeast U.S. It also looks like the polar vortex will set up shop somewhere around Hudson Bay or just south-southeast of there. Its been on the other side of the globe for the past two years so maybe a pattern change, maybe the same ole’ crap.
Yeaa and in 3 days we will be talking about how cold it is outside!! Burrr Feburary looks to be below normal we all new mother nature is a little behind herself and in the great lakes states we need it snow rain severe drought going strong in the mid west!! Stay tune BILLS BLOGGERS!!!
Holy crap. I agree with Indy? Sweet. I could care less for the snow. I just need the cold for the ice to hang around. Hit a limit of gills last weekend on 4 inches of ice so clear you could watch em bite. A few more trips like that would be a little boost to the dinners in the freezer.

Here comes Winter, perhaps! You’ve got to know that we couldn’t go the entire season like this. I wonder if this will be our Winter. How long will the colder temps last? I hear there will be many chances later in the week for LES. The cold air will be entrenched then. I’m coming down off the ledge.

The new long range updates all have come in now. The euro has it cold as hell here in Feb. the GFDL is pretty cold, the NCAR has it very warm, the JMA is cold, the Canadian is brutal, the cfs is neutral, and the funny thing is all of its ensembles are all neutral. So who knows what the hell to expect for the next month. I did take a look at what some of the models that do forecast summer are…you better make sure your A/C is working real good if you believe ‘em. I guess enjoy winter for what its worth, if its worth much around here.

Ryan Maue is saying possibly 120 in Sydney this weekend. Berlin, Moscow, and Beijing have had, til recently, extended above avg temps. Flowers will be blooming here shortly. The new normal has become normal.

I find golf very relaxing and fun!
Winter weather in on the way, first some much needed moisture 0.75 to 1.25 for most areas with a touch of snow to end. Then colder with a few weak system before perhaps some more bigger systems at least get us in the game.
When ‘winter is coming’ is said frequently it means we’ve not had a winter. Could definitely use the moisture.
LOL! Good point about not having winter – we DO all sound like kids waiting for Santa – and just like the Jolly Elf – winter has gone back to the North Pole, too.
Perfect day out today! Just plain awesome outside with the sun and warm temps, and now a gentle January rain coming down to ensure that any snow left anywhere will melt quickly away. Even better yet is we are now up to almost mid-January, each day passing by is one less day of possible snow we have left! If we continue to have winters like these, the peoples who go to Arizona for the winter will start migrating to Michigan for their winters!

Good precip last night, we needed that. Now only if the central part of the country could get some of those reds out of the drought map.
Rain is moving out. It did rain steady through the night! Could you imagine if we received this rain in colder temps? We would’ve have quite a bit of snow!!
Looks like Winter may be poised to come here early next week! It looks to get colder after the initial cold front brings our temps closer to average. Until then, ENJOY the Spring!!

Looks like nothing more than glancing blows of below average temps on the horizon after that.
Australia’s Bureau of Meterology came out yesterday and said that the current heat wave in terms of duration, intensity, and extent is arguably the most significant in the history of Australia. Four of Australia’s top 10 hottest days ever recorded have been made just this month alone.
……and worldwide temps continue to hover near normal.
Global temps were above the average baseline in 2012, 2011, and 2010. Three years in a row.
Before that, we had 7 years in a row with global temps above average. If my memory serves me, I believe only 2008 was cooler than average.

Yep, it was, as were the 00′s and 90′s. The 60′s, 70′s and 80′s were cold. I’m willing to bet the 10′s, 20′s, and 30′s will be cold again. Almost seems like it’s a ~30 year ocean cycle driving earth’s temps, NOT CO2.

It had to warm…the 60s and 70s were the 2 coldest decades of the last century.
Australia update 1/15: After one really hot day on 1/4, Hobart hasn’t reached 80 since. They were only in the mid 60s on the 13th and 14th. Sidney had two days of blistering heat with 109 and 97 on the 8th and 9th – but it’s been cooler than average of late with highs of just 72 on the 13th and 14th with showers. Ayers Rock, usually a very hot place in mid summer, had highs only in the mid 80s on the 12th-14th. Five of the last six days have been cooler than average in Melbourne. Canberra had a very cool high of 72 on the 14th and Adelaide, with an average high of 85, has only been in the low-mid 70s the last three days.
0.85″ rain here overnight.
Temps have steadily been going up here its now up to 46°. While it looks to turn colder late next week there also does not (as of now) look like we will receive all that much snow so our low snow fall amounts should continue.

My philosophy has always been that if we get the arctic air here, it will find a way to snow.
What arctic air, channel 8 is forcasting highs in the upper 20′s so far for the end of next week. Last time I checked thats average for this time of year. I guess this is the new normal, when we get into the 20′s its a massive cold out break.
Took my rain gauge out of cold storage for this event and recorded 0.9″ last night. Very glad it wasn’t snow.

That could be snow, sleet, or freezing rain with cold air flowing in at low levels.

Well by looking at the new 12z GFS and the Euro it doesn’t appear that any big snows are on the horizon, but maybe some clippers that will produce a couple 1-3/2-4 inch snows. I see two potential little storms coming but by looking at all the models I really can’t see much snow out of them. The only model that gives a big lake effect event is the Euro model out about 8 days, but the way things have been going I sure wouldn’t put apples in one basket. Most models show it getting colder but the real question is just how much colder are we comparing it to. I have heard from a couple other forecasters saying that the great lakes looks to remain snowstormless for quite awhile. Got those golf clubs polished up Rocky…:)
What is interesting to me is the fact the for the last few days CPC has been consistently showing us in the 6 to 14 day range to have below average temperatures and above average precip, which would be all SNOW! The models show very little snow while the CPC shows above average SNOW. Something does not add up here! I will be golfing this Saturday and the way this year of NO WINTER WEATHER is going I may be golfing all winter long. We are still entrenched in a NO SNOW PATTERN!!!
288 hour GFS. Only reason our 850 mb temps are above -20*C is the west wind coming off of the warm lake. Nice!

I agree that does look nice. Too bad it WON’T happen! The GFS model has a ZERO percent accuracy rate at the 288 hour range for this entire winter season. This the same air the GFS said would be here by this coming Tuesday! What a joke. All long range models are 100% WORTHLESS!

Good ole’ Bastardi……does he ever get tired of posting the same thing over and over, only to have the outcome result in a miserable failure? I appreciate Bill prefacing the GFS with the fact that it typically has a cold bias in long-term forecasts. Bastardi seems to have convinced himself that those models are accurate. I would love it if they were, but they’ve (mostly GFS) been awful for at least a few years.
I thought Bastardi quit. A blind monkey has a better track record.
Bastardi quit Accuweather, but hasn’t quit being the “chief forecaster” (what a title) at Weatherbell. Not sure if Accuweather is better off with or without him. I do consider Bastardi to be better than Henry Margusity and his meteorological madness though.
