Cold in the Southwest, Warm in the Southeast

January 15th, 2013 at 5:36 am by under Bill's Blog, Weather

Click the picture and the map to enlarge.  The picture is what the S. Pole looked like today at 1:25 PM.  It’s the middle of summer and the temperature is a relatively warm -14F.  This is the high temperature map from Monday.  You can see quite a contrast between the East and the Southwest.  Los Angeles had their coolest temperature in 22 years with a morning low of 34.  Santa Barbara dropped to 27, the coldest temperature in six years.  The high temperature reached only 38 in Los Vegas NV.   Tucson had both a record low (21) and a record low maximum (42)…the same for Douglas AZ with a high/low of 41/11 (on Sunday Douglas dropped to +7, breaking the record low by 8 degrees.  The Arizona freeze will cause the price of lettuce to go up.   Other record lows included -31 at Big Piney WY, -17 at Alliance NE and -18 at Alpine AZ.  On the East Coast, record highs were set at Portland ME (59), Savannah GA (81) and Valdosta GA (83).  Our weather stays cool with light snow Weds. PM into Thursdaqy and again over the weekend as a strong Arctic front comes thru, giving us our coldest 3-day shot of air in 2 years.  Daytime temperatures are forecast to be only in the teens early next week.  From Saturday night to Monday night, the European model gives G.R. 0.32″ of precipitation.  If that’s right, that would be 6″ of snow.  Muskegon gets 0.43″ of precipitation in 48-hours during that period.  GFS shows ROCKIN’ cold air and what should be a decent snow dump for areas that get NW flow lake effect (SW Corner of the State (buryin’ Berrien) and Oceana Co. to the north).  Time to get the plows back on the trucks.  We also get 1-3″ of snow Weds. PM – Thurs. AM.  Next week could be the coldest week of the winter.     ALSO:   900 people injured as major snowstorm hits Japan and there’s a Yellow Warning for the U.K. for snow and ice.  Schools were closed and dozens of traffic accidents were reported.  There was a lot of snow in SE Alaska.   Finally, WOW, talk about the Biggest Loser!    AND – Jimmy Kimmel and L.A. weathercaster’s talk about the cold in California.

  1. Mike M. says:

    Biggest loser? Big daddy BC!!

    1. Paul says:

Good one Mike!!! bdbc = dip$hit, lol.

      1. Matt (Spring Lake) says:

Hey Paul (and Mike), BDBC is not my favorite person on here…but when you post something like that, it makes you appear worse than him. Obviously it’s your choice to post what you want…but calling somebody names because you don’t like their viewpoint just seems childish, and it it is not a good representation of what you stand for.

        1. Rumrunner says:

I love how some will jump on a person for posting, on a public blog, as he or she wishes.

        2. Matt (Spring Lake) says:

Not “jumping” on them. Giving some advice to (I am assuming from their posts) some fellow citizens who don’t agree with the “climate change extremists”. Posts involving name-calling only make it more difficult for people who disagree with each other to be civil- minded. Thanks for “jumping”.

        3. Matt (Spring Lake) says:

Oh, and cursing, on a public blog, is unacceptable. Of course, that is if you are somebody who respects others and perhaps rules.

        4. Mike M. says:

Spare me the crocodile tears, Matt. Big daddy deserves to be jumped on with both feet. With cleats on.

        5. Matt (Spring Lake) says:

….and we act shocked that there are school shootings….

Guns aren’t the problem. It’s the hate.

        6. Mike M. says:

*Sniff* Can’t we all just get along? Kumbaya, M’Lord, Kumbaya…

        7. Mike M. says:

Let me see if I can clear this up for you, Matt. Big daddy is an ideological opponent in a time of extreme polarization in civil society. He is a proponent of the Leftist style of confrontation and intimidation. There is no time left for civility in dealing with his kind. I believe in “punch back, twice as hard” as a good rule of thumb. I’m sorry if it makes people like you and Rocky feel all icky.
If Bill wants me to shut up and go away, he’ll tell me. I get the feeling he rather enjoys a good fight. You can only say so much about the weather.

        8. Matt (Spring Lake) says:

There you go, Mike. An actual explanation rather than name calling…see the difference?

Name calling isn’t really a great “comeback”.

Just like you can’t discuss things with me without being sarcastic about “tears” and “sniff” and “Kumbaya”.

BDBC is an extremist and needs to be debated with…I just find people who need to name call weak in their argument. Why don’t you put actual information out there against what he says without ridiculous names and insults?

        9. Mike M. says:

OK, Matt, whatever you say. Now STFU. :)

        10. Paul says:

Matt, I am just stating the facts.

        11. Rumrunner says:

Yeah Matt, you did. I find it hilarious that you have to have an opinion on everything on this blog. YOu can say anything, whenever you want. I won’t speak for the others, but I will do the same. You aren’t the damn blog police. Well, maybe, but I don’t care either way.

        12. Brad says:

Mike is the picture of ASPD in the DSM-IV. That said, Paul could learn a thing or two about the art of the insult from him ;-) .

        13. Mike M. says:

Hey, Brad, I resemble that remark! Uh, resent, I think, uh, mumble…

        14. Matt (Spring Lake) says:

Ok, rumrunner and Mark, I don’t recall stating my opinion all the time. Frankly, you guys are just bad at arguing in an intelligent manner. It is people like you as to why we head towards Socialism. You think you can do anything. Well, I’m not going. So have fun reading ALL my opinions. Try speaking intelligently once in a while.

        15. Matt (Spring Lake) says:

          Mike

        16. Mike M. says:

          Tace atque abi! Ructatrix!

        17. Matt (Spring Lake) says:

          Y tu. :)

        18. Rumrunner says:

          LOL.

  2. KevinS (Saugatuck) says:

Last few good chances over the years, for lake effect snow have been ruined because of it being too “dry”. Will that be the headline next week?

    1. Swatz_Zoo(Cedar Springs) says:

      Yup

  3. 11 Bravo (Yankee Springs/Barry State Game Area) says:

A chilly 11 degrees this morning in the woods with a dusting of snow on the ground.

  4. SlimJim NW GR (1) says:

Clear and 18° here this AM. That 83 in Valdosta GA was quite the improvement from when we went by there both on the way down and on the way back. On the way down temps were only in the upper 30′s to low 40′s in southern GA and northern FL but clear. On the way back it was in the low 40′s cloudy with rain. We did not get into the warmer temps until central Florida on the way down and we left the warm temps on the way up just north of Orlando.
    SlimJim

    1. Matt (Spring Lake) says:

And they can stay down there…til May!!! :P

  5. Travis (Oxford, MI) says:

Coldest air in two years? After last year’s non-existent winter, that’s not saying much at all!

That’s like saying this March will probably be the coldest in 2 years ;)

I stumbled on WeatherTrends360.com the other day, and they seem to have some good maps and info. Anyone ever go there?

    1. Matt (Spring Lake) says:

      Haha…good point!

    2. Travis Ulberg (West of Martin, Allegan County) says:

We did have ONE day last year when temps stayed in the mid to upper 10′s all day.

  6. Jim S (North of Parchment) says:

Pretty darned cold here this AM. Got down to 12 degrees last night.

  7. Storm waning says:

Now that’s a statement many in the plow business need to take to the bank

“Time to get the plows back on the trucks.” Bill S.

    1. Rob (Grand Haven) says:

I sure hope its true!! Our plow trucks haven’t moved much this year.

    1. Mike M. says:

That’s caused by the record low Arctic ice in September. Or, er, eh, something… ;)

    2. Kevin(Rockford) says:

Get used to it California and Arizona, this is the new normal…so I’ve heard.

      1. DF (SE Mich) says:

        Lol!

  8. arcturus says:

It’s the middle of January. It’s suppose to be cold, at least that’s what it was like at one time. Even with this cold snap it’s quite possible January will be above average. Just don’t tell that to Joe Bastardi. He wouldn’t listen anyway.

    1. fixxxer says:

i don’t understand why people hype up this joe.b soo much on here. when was the last time he was ever right about anything?

    2. Bill Steffen says:

Arc. is right…we’re +6.7 right now in G.R. and that’s going to be very hard to overcome. We’ve got warm lakes around us that are going to add 10-12 degrees to the air.

  9. kevin. w says:

The new euro weeklies shows it staying cold but bone dry with a split jet stream. I sure don’t see much in the way of anything coming for a good while. Talked to a snowplow driver here in Mt. Pleasant and he is thinking of selling his plows and lawn mowers due to the dry summer of last year and no plowing for two winters in a row. Just can’t pay bills with no income and asked me if I wanted to buy his equipment and told him I got out of it two years ago when I had an opportunity to do so.

    1. fixxxer says:

well in all fairness these people should try to get supplemental jobs as well. you can never have a job that is solely based on the weather, too unpredictable.

      1. ptmartin says:

        Like Farming?

    2. SlimJim NW GR (1) says:

Kind of funny I would think that many of the lawn/snow people would be “contracted” so that their customers would pay for a season and if there was little grass cutting or snow plowing they would make out just fine….It would seem to me if we have several dry and low snow season in a row lest people would want to pay for a season of service and in several years when we do get a lot of rain and or snow then the lawn/snow providers would have more of a problem.
      SlimJim

  10. Ted Damick says:

Hello West Michigan from The Gambia in West Africa:
It is a balmy 103 degrees under blazingly clear skies with an ENE wind of 25mph. We are located about 30 miles ENE of Banjul, the capital, near the edge of the Sahara desert in a little village called Ndungu Kebbe. This morning the local people were freezing with 56 degrees and were bundled up in winter coats. this is a far cry from Allegan where we hale from but you can be assured that we are well tanned and roasted here in The Gambia. Ted51

    1. Bill Steffen says:

Thanks for the comment, Ted – feel free to let us know what it’s like there.

  11. Jim S.(Saugatuck Twp) says:

12Z GFS shows a constant parade of Alberta clippers…but no big storms. Lakeshore may get hit pretty good, but mostly light snow everywhere else.

    1. Travis Ulberg (West of Martin, Allegan County) says:

Yup, pretty much has a constant snow from Sunday to Sunday next week for the lake shore counties. Let’s hope it’s at least a WNW flow so Berrien, Van Buren, and Cass counties don’t steal all the snow.

  12. Travis Ulberg (West of Martin, Allegan County) says:

Acculess gives me ~13.5″ from Wednesday night to next Wednesday. With 12.5″ of that being lake effect.

    1. Irish coffee says:

You should do ok,..i’m sw of you in n/c Van Buren cty…expecting winds @ 850 shifting ~ 285-320degrees by early next week…then shifting more wsw, so everyone in store for some action. We don’t want TOO cold @ 850 (lower than about -25C) as that will limit dendrite size/accumulation potential…so -22C would be GREAT w/ cyclonic flow!Fwiw, John Dee has his backyard in heart of heaviest snowfall for 5-10 day graphic(24″+) w/ sw Mi in 8-12″ zone….i disagree for our area, as prolonged outbreaks as progged(if it verifies)w/ multiple disturbances in the flow, should easily produce 2-3 feet totals SOMEWHERE in west Mi. (Sat- next Thu.)

      1. Travis Ulberg (West of Martin, Allegan County) says:

We are usually right on the edge of the snow with a NW flow. If it’s a WNW to W flow than we are usually in the bullseye, and get hammered with lake effect. And I agree about the -22C being great w/cyclonic flow. If it were to be a strictly NW flow, I could see places like South Haven getting hammered, but it looks like a NW flow to start pushing the cold air in, then a WNW flow keeping the cold air around.
Just the slightest change in wind makes a HUGE difference.

  13. Katie in Kentwood says:

Winter is coming :D I am so excited! Hope it pans out.

    1. Matt (Spring Lake) says:

      Me too! Enjoy!

  14. SlimJim NW GR (1) says:

Well I hope for all of the so called snow lovers we get our cold and snow the next two to three weeks so it can then warm up for spring….But Iam afraid it could be cold well into spring this year and if fact would not be too surprised to see a white Easter this year.
    SlimJim

    1. Brian(Grandville) says:

You could very well be right. I also have a feeling the cold could linger well into spring this year. Not judging by any models, just a gut feeling.

    2. chuckles says:

Yes, I hope we get a good shot of snow and cold around here too. Not that I enjoy winters like I used to, but maybe we can get some people on here to quit whining about no snow, being able playing golf, and the “new normal”.

      1. Rocky (Rockford) says:

It will take a decent SNOWSTORM for that to happen and currently there are absolutely NO SNOWSTORMS IN SIGHT!

    3. fixxxer says:

you said that last year too slim, no offense.

      1. SlimJim NW GR (1) says:

Maybe, But this year I feel that is more likely. Besides we are now over due for several months or more of below average temps.
        SlimJim

        1. fixxxer says:

I agree were overdue but im doubting it.

  15. Rocky (Rockford) says:

    1. I will now agree that it looks imminent that we will be seeing some arctic air next week. Better late than never!
    2. I have been a big critic of ACCUWEATHER, however let me say it looks like I was wrong and they did a good job of predicting and explaining why they thought an arctic air outbreak was going to arrive!
    3. Let’s hope we can actually see at least one SNOWSTORM develop while this cold air is in place, however until this happens we are still stuck in a NO SNOW PATTERN!
    4. It does appear the lake effect snow belts are in for some decent SNOW, however GR may be left high and dry!
    5. I am ready to ROCK n ROLL, so bring on a SNOWSTORM!!!!

    1. Nathan says:

Bill, you seriously need to add an ignore button

      1. Rocky (Rockford) says:

        WOW – grow up boy!

    2. fixxxer says:

jesus rj what is your deal? do you repeat yourself because you cannot help it or just to annoy people?

      1. Rocky (Rockford) says:

Go back under your rock fixxxer! We are in a NO SNOW PATTERN!

        1. fixxxer says:

Go play on your xbox some more.

      2. SW Kent says:

Fixxxer, please do not take the Lord’s name in vain……it hurts me.
        Thank you

  16. INDY says:

    SNOW AND COLD COMING!!! INDYY….

    1. Matt (Spring Lake) says:

      Oh, yeah!!!

  17. Deb (Oklahoma City) says:

    http://www.weather.com/

I can’t believe the weather channel named the 1-3″ snowfall coming for the northeast winter storm Helen they are a joke now! Lmao hey why don’t they just name every 1-3″ snowfall ha!

    1. Ned S. (Now in South Holland) says:

Yeah Deb, I think it’s a bit idiotic too. I guess they need ratings pretty badly.

    2. INDY says:

      Deb lololololololololololo……….

      1. fixxxer says:

For once i agree with you indy. Jordan should come out again.

        1. Ryan (Algoma) says:

        3. Jack says:

    3. Lisa (Caledonia) says:

TWC is ridiculous. Naming the winter storms is such a lame gimmick…

  18. Jim S.(Saugatuck Twp) says:

The forecast discussions for Gaylord and GR are out. GR talking about extreme instablity over the lakes early next week, but possible limiting factor would be the air being too cold, thus small flake size. Gaylord mentions that as well. Hopefully, for snow lovers, it won’t be too cold to snow. From too warm to too cold to too dry to the wrong wind direction…..lake effect is tricky.

    1. Matt (Spring Lake) says:

      Lol…oh myyyyyyyyyyyyy

  19. DF (SE Mich) says:

The Detroit NWS has A2 as 19 for a high next Monday. They are on board so far.

      2. Rocky (Rockford) says:

Thanks for listening. Keep up the good work. Would you like to be my fan club President this year?

  22. Jeff (S.E. Ionia County) says:

Trend is still holding strong we will be in the deep freeze next week !! Looks like it will be dry though. Some lake effect is likely but only in the favored snow belts .. http://wintercast.tripod.com/id9.html

    1. Look at that date on the precip. map….it’s for August 2009.

  23. Brad says:

Hate to say it, folks, but it looks like we’ll see a strong push of warm air by the beginning of the week after next…50s and 60s. Can we hit 70 in Feb?

    1. INDY says:

      wow 34 now???? INDYY….

  26. michael g (SE GR) says:

What? 15, 16, 14, and 19 on the eight day forecast? That can’t be. I’ve been told a million times by a thousand people that this winter is just like last year. Huh. What do you know.

    1. fixxxer says:

      1. fixxxer says:

  27. Deb (Oklahoma City) says:

  29. Brian(Grandville) says:

Any chance this LES next week wont be confined to just the far s.w. corner, and Oceana north?

    1. Matt (Spring Lake) says:

Yeah. Those areas will just get the heaviest. If we can get more of a westerly component, the best snow will be more spread out to affect more of us.

      1. michael g (SE GR) says:

Yeah, Bill said heaviest southwest corner, and northern lakeshore, but also said ever GR could see at least several inches.

        1. Matt (Spring Lake) says:

It has been a long time since GR had a big lake effect event, hasn’t it?

  30. Jimbo says:

    1. Matt (Spring Lake) says:

I saw that too. Even George Lessons on WZZM said “plowable” snow for next week.

      1. Brad says:

Are you sure it wasn’t Brent Musburger that used “plowable?”

        1. Jack says:
