The moon is setting in the far west right now. If you look at the crescent moon, you’ll notice the rest of the moon is faintly illuminated. That faint light is “Earthshine”. Earthshine (there’s even a song about it) is light from the sun that is reflected off the Earth and back to the moon. It is most pronounced in January and February because of the higher amount of snow cover in the Northern Hemisphere (which set a record for areal extent for December this year (despite the lack of snow here).
