Weds. Night

January 16th, 2013 at 2:37 pm by under Bill's Blog, Weather

Local Weds. 8:40 PM -  A Flood Watch has been issued for the Muskegon River upstream of the Rogers Dam.   An ice jam has caused river levels to rise and there is some water in yards on Riverside Drive (east side of the pond upstream from the dam).  I’ve had several calls about icy driveways in Kent/Newaygo Counties.  We were getting a little light mist in G.R. around 6 PM.  The temperatures are in the low-mid 30s, but it got to 18 deg. last night in G.R. and 15 in Kalamazoo and Battle Creek, so the ground is cold and you can get an icy spot even if your thermometer says 34 or 35.   Periods of flurries/mist/freezing mist continues this evening.  Nothing much, but enough to perhaps cause an icy spot as you go north on M-37, US 31 or US 131.  We’ve had gusts to 35 mph, so the wind will push around what snow you get.  It’s 35 in G.R., so some of the snow will melt as it falls, but we’ll get below freezing during the early evening. For current Michigan weather observations and wind speeds, click here. You can check out the S. Haven Lighthouse, the Spyglass Condos Weather Station by the Holland Channel, the Muskegon beach (when the wind is in knots – kts. – multiply by 1.15 to get mph), and the beach at Michigan City, Indiana. Snow cover as of 1/11 AM: 1″ Big Rapids, 2″ Baldwin and Houghton Lake, 4″ Cadillac and Lake City, 6″ Gaylord, 7″ Newberry, 8″ S. Ste. Marie and Grand Marais, 12″ Marquette. Here’s NAM model snowfall thru 84 hours, the GFS snowfall thru 120 hours and the HPC snowfall predictions. Here’s WOOD-TV Interactive Radar, looping radar. Check out the current conditions, regional radar, GRR radar, northern Indiana radar, Chicago radar and Milwaukee radar. Haven GLERL station, the Muskegon GLERL station, the Grand Haven Steelheaders webcam and weather station, and the weather station at Holland State Park. Check out the WOOD lightning tracker and U.S. lightning Marantha Webcam at Lake Michigan and links to webcams. Here’s the infrared satellite loop (night) and the visible satellite loop (daytime). Here’s Lake Michigan water temperatures. Here’s storm total rainfall for W. Michigan and E. Michigan. Here’s data from the mid-lake buoy (not available in winter) and the Wind Map. And…here’s the 84-hour NAM snowfall amount forecast for W. Michigan and the 120-hour GFS snowfall amount forecast. Here’s local storm reports from Iowa, Western Wisconsin, Eastern Wisconsin, and northern Michigan. Check out these webcams and the Snowman Cam from Gaylord. Here’s a few pictures of the last snowstorm. Here’s current U.S. temperatures.

I think he was teasing you, not agreeing with you

  3. Billy Boy says:

Hi Bill, it’s 3:07PM in North Muskegon – along the Lake Michigan shore. The wind has been blowing hard since morning, but I haven’t even seen a flurry. I’m not complaining though. Must be that the snows are blowing over me and going inland.

  4. Rocky (Rockford) says:

I love Bill’s comments: The COLD and SNOW is COMING! We have heard this for about two straight years! This time he may be right. I am going to check the models and the teleconnectors and I will be back with my predictions! His other comment: how would you like to be in Miami right now? I would not want to any where near that *ell hole. That would be one step above prison in my mind! Give me temps in the teens, wind and heavy SNOW any day over being stuck in Miami, FL!!! FL sounds absolutely horrible to me!!!!!!

    1. SlimJim NW GR (1) says:

But the sun shine and blue sky warm winds while Miami may or may not be the place to be you can not beat south Florida on warm days in the winter.
      SlimJim

      1. Rocky (Rockford) says:

That sounds horrible to me. Bring on the COLD and SNOW!!

      2. Yup (Grandville) says:

I’ll be joining you in Miami in a day Slim!

        1. fixxxer says:

We will be in the keys for 7 days come march.

  5. SlimJim NW GR (1) says:

34° and getting a few sprinkles here now. While still windy its not as windy as earlier. It looks like it will not be until Sunday night/Monday before the GR area gets much snow (unless things change one way or the other before then)
    SlimJim

    1. Yup (Grandville) says:

Oops, you aren’t down there right now ;) Duh.

  6. Rocky (Rockford) says:

NEWS BULLITIN>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> GET READY TO ROCK N ROLL!

    1. Winter is about ready to arrive. It is about time!
    2. We are in the process of transitioning into a COLD and SNOWY pattern! It is about time!
    3. Fixxxer go back under your rock because WINTER is here!
    4. Kent County will be in a WWA come this Sunday night. Lake effect snow, wind and lake enhanced SNOW! The preliminary RDB model shows 3 to 5 inches for GR!
    5. There will be school delays and closing on Monday.
    6. Then next week the fun really begins – a lot of wind, lake effect snow and clipper SNOW!
    7. Get ready to ROCK n ROLL!

INDY I will be stocking up on the junk food and the Sprites for next week. Get ready for a wild ride! Is is about time!!!!!!!!!

    1. Storm waning says:

Yes, rocky most schools will be closed Monday, maybe even some banks, no mail?

It’s MLK Jr. Day next Monday

      1. fixxxer says:

It shouldnt even be a holiday IMO.

        1. Mark (East Lansing) says:

          Wow.

        2. fixxxer says:

Wow what? Not being racsist just stating my opinion.

        3. Mark (East Lansing) says:

          Who said anything about race?

        4. bobcat says:

Ditto the ‘Wow’!. What an ignorant comment about a man who changed the world.

        5. Cort S. says:

Columbus Day… I can understand not being a reasonable holiday.

MLK Day… probably important to at least a few people.

      2. Jules says:

Ha! WWA – they post that for a 1/2 of snow in Michigan! What a farse!

    2. fixxxer says:

Hey rj i heard pinerest was looking for you. They have a golf course there right? ;)

  7. Matt (Spring Lake) says:

We are just getting flurries at my job in Muskegon. Another miss….shocker!

    1. Rocky (Rockford) says:

This was never forecast to be much more than a dusting. This was always headed off to the North. Your fun will begin Sunday night and then the COLD and SNOW pattern will be lasting at least two straight weeks and maybe longer. Get READY WEST MI!!!!!

      1. fixxxer says:

        Or…..

  8. Rocky (Rockford) says:

For those of you that do not think the GR area will be seeing much SNOW next week – well you are 100% WRONG! You will be in for a rude awakening. We may actually be seeing BLIZZARD conditions!! ROCK n ROLL will never die baby!

  9. kevin. w says:

The new high res Euro and Canadian are now starting to match up the JMA with what could be the biggest storm around the 4th of Feb. in over 3 years. The JMA has been advertising a mega storm for over 3 weeks now and it still has it coming this way. I sure hope this is right because this could be a blockbuster for Michigan, Illinois and Wisconsin and record cold coming to parts of the Dakotas/Minnesota after the storm passes. It sure is looking like a barn burner winter forecast coming now, what you think Rocky?

    1. SBPortage002 says:

Hey, isn’t that about the time of Jack’s prediction? :)

      1. Jack says:

Darn Close..SBPortage022 !!! I Believe this is just PRECURSOR…For thee Blizzard of 2013 , The JEM Model continues To Show….The week of 2/4/13….. BLIZZARD CONDITIONS !!! Stay CUED !!!!!!! ;-)

        1. SBPortage002 says:

Yeah I am ready for something more exciting than rain, that’s for sure.

        2. Mike (Mattawan) says:

          with you on that SBPortage002!

    2. Cupcake says:

NOOOOOOO!!!! I’ll be in Australia….don’t want to miss out on the fun!! :)

    3. fixxxer says:

Lol at buying into long ranges. You people never learn.

      1. Jack says:

        Not any Ordinary , Loooooong Range Fixxxxer….THE FAMOUS…JEM Model…. Stay….CUED !!!!!!!!!!’!!!!!!!!!!!!! ;-)

    4. bnoppe(Albion) says:

I’m having a hard time believing that, what the heck does JMA stand for

    5. Rocky (Rockford) says:

I think that winter has gotten a very slow start, but starting next week we will be making up for lost ground with lake effect, lake enhancement and then a few BIG SYSTEM SNOWS after that!

  10. kevin. w says:

I thought I read something about that on here from somebody, just wasn’t sure who it was. I think the longer range Euro/Canadian are catching onto something big in a couple weeks, will just have to wait and see. But it would be historically about the right time for big storms as we get into Feb. the pattern usually shifts will the higher sun angle farther down in the south. Man something has to happen this sure has been a very boring couple of years all around thats for sure.

    1. SBPortage002 says:

We will see but as far as the lake effect goes, usually the LE forecasts have been on the money from what I have seen. Question is where and how much? Being down here in K-Zoo/Portage we usually get some good LE snows, being just a short ways from 131, the supposed cut of point.

      1. SBPortage002 says:

        cut off…lol

      2. Mike (Mattawan) says:

yeah 131 is generally the cut off point for the LE snow… hopefully since Mattawan is safely WEST of 131, we get a GOOD amount of snow! its pretty funny because it has been sunny on the East side of 131 and literally right after I cross the bridge over 131 the weather changes to clouds and snow. It usually is a pretty immediate transition.

  11. Jerry hoag says:

Bill have you heard of this???? Feb. 4th a mega storm heading for Michigan, Illinois and Wisconsin. Then the coldest air ever for Dakotas and Minnesota???? Huh????

  12. fixxxer says:

High & dry folks. Het ready for another hot march and sizzling summer!

    1. fixxxer says:

      *get ready.

      1. Cort S. says:

Let’s keep it reasonable in March so that way the fruit trees don’t start blooming too soon only to get killed off.

But then in April, let’s shoot for the moon and go for 90 degrees for two weeks!

  13. Swatz_Zoo(Cedar Springs) says:

Well if the week of the 4th of February are full of blizzards and cold PERFECT TIMING my dh will be home for R&R to snuggle me tight and keep me warm!!

    1. Jack says:

      You Betcha,Swat- Zoo !!!! Stay CUED !!!!! ;-) . JEM Model….Looking Good. !!!! ;-)

    2. bobcat says:

Swatz, I pray this all works out perfectly for you! Stock up on all your favorite things and snuggle up for a wintery blast!
I thank your family for your service to this country. God bless you all.

  14. Swatz_Zoo(Cedar Springs) says:

Just locked up my flock and nearly slipped on my deck from frozen drizzle, fine wet mist fallings and coating everything to be slick, so watch for black ice!

  15. arcturus says:

The misguided hype is even greater than I thought. Huge disappointment is in store.

    1. Jack says:

arcturus….. NO HYPE, Just FACTS….. Stay CUED : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w3NXgM_LGQA. ENJOY, and Wait for 2/4/13…. For the BLIZZARD of 2013. JEM. Says SOOOOO…. ;-)

    2. Steelie says:

      Good Day,

Indeed. I just read the NWS/GRR long term and it does not seem like they are too gung-ho on this cold/snow. We may get two days of chill before returning to normal. The CPC is also trending this way. In the 6-10 day map the deep cold has moved to the North East. With the 8-14 day showing us at E/Q (normal) and then warm again in the one month. So if that pans out, this will amount to only a brief shot of cold.

      Steelie

      1. Slimjim says:

You know I was thinking the same way. Ever winter has a period of cold and this looks to one for this winter.
        Slimjim

      2. Rocky (Rockford) says:

The NWS is totally gun shy after all of their horrendous forecasts and botched WWA. They will get on board by Sunday or Monday!

        1. Steelie says:

          Good Day,

Perhaps Rocky. We will see… ;-)

          Steelie

        2. arcturus says:

NWS botched forecast? Look in the mirror, bud, your track record is even worse. Suggest when they come with the straight jacket you leave peacefully. Thanks for listening!

        3. Mike (Mattawan) says:

          @arcturus I wouldn’t go THAT far… ;)

      3. Cort S. says:

CPC shifted the cold air eastward because their 6-10 day outlook window is only catching the tail end of our Arctic outbreak now. Arctic air in less than 6 days, and moderating temperatures in 6-10 days.

  16. SW Kent says:

    Good forecast Bill.
Looks like the wind make go westerly Tuesday and bring some of the snow inland.
Moisture looks decent and temp contrast extreme.
    Nice instability as well.
I think our temp moderation towards the end of next week will be short lived.

    1. Rocky (Rockford) says:

      Agreed 100%!

  17. Storm waning says:

    From the forecast at WOOD
    Define “east”

    Sounds vague

Areas that see significant lake-effect snowfall when the winds are north-northwest to northwest could see 6-12″ accumulation early next week, with lighter amounts as you move east away from the lake.

    1. Cort S. says:

It should be vague; it’s still several days away.

Recall that NW-wind lake-effect is generally the greatest to the west of a Grand Haven to Kalamazoo line… roughly.

  18. Stacsh says:

No advisory for the possible dusting overnight?

    1. Rocky (Rockford) says:

Not this time, however there will be a WWA for Sunday night and Monday!

      1. fixxxer says:

Oh yeah? Can you see into the future rj?

        1. Rocky (Rockford) says:

No but the RDB model can!

        2. fixxxer says:

Is it just as reliable as joe.b?

  19. Rocky (Rockford) says:

Get ready Grand Rapids! COLD, SNOW and WIND is on the way! Next week is looking GREAT! Temps in the teens, wind, lake effect SNOW, lake enhanced SNOW and Alberta CLIPPERS! It doesn’t get much better than this people. Once the COLD and SNOW starts next week it may not stop till March. You may not see a temperature above freezing for 4 or 5 straight weeks! Get ready to ROCK N ROLL! This is it WINTER is finally here!!!!!!

    1. fixxxer says:

You ever hear of valium?…just saying!

  20. Rocky (Rockford) says:

Mark it down. A few times between this Sunday and next Wednesday GR will see some lake enhanced snow with a WSW wind and GR will see several inches of SNOW during these stretches. GET READY!!!!!!!

    1. Slimjim says:

If we get the WSW or W. wind that should be the case but it still has to happen
      Slimjim

      1. Rocky (Rockford) says:

It will happen at least twice during this stretch and when it does WATCH OUT people!!

        1. Brian(Grandville) says:

I’ll mark it down on the 2013 calender I still don’t have.

        2. fixxxer says:

Ill be soo glad when its may.

    2. Travis Ulberg (West of Martin, Allegan County) says:

WSW? We aren’t going to get a WSW wind until Wednesday when the lake effect is suppose to wind down.

  21. Matt (Spring Lake) says:

Hey Bill! Could you possibly explain why EVERY band of precip. that has headed towards Muskegon this winter has fallen apart? It did it again earlier today and once again tonight. It happens so much and I don’t get it. Is there a meteorological explanation, or just ridiculously bad luck for this area?

    1. fixxxer says:

Same with the summer storms. We call it the bubble but its bad luck.

      1. Brian(Grandville) says:

That’s the only explanation I can think of as well. I was just looking at the radar and thought the exact same thing Matt.

        1. Matt (Spring Lake) says:

I think there really is something to fixxxer’s theory of “bubble effect”.

    2. Bill Steffen says:

The synoptic storms have missed us…the area from NE Illinois into Western Lower Michigan. They’ve had snowstorms in Wisconsin (Madison got nailed back in Dec.) and south of us (Indianapolis has had more snow than our area) and all the way down to northern and central Arkansas. We’re between jets, but this has just been our year to miss out.

Despite some acceptable cold air outbreaks…the parameters just haven’t come together for lake-effect snow…overall dry air mass, anti-cyclonic curvature, etc.

This time, we got a good shot of Arctic air…a very healthy air/water temperature contrast, hopefully some cyclonic curvature…it’s certainly the best set-up of the year if not the last 2 years. Not everyone will see the real significant snow. It’ll be localized depending on the wind direction, fetch, etc.

      1. Matt (Spring Lake) says:

Thanks for the explanation, but I am asking in reference tonight. It literally jumped over Muskegon. This really has happened with every system, no matter what direction.

        1. Rocky (Rockford) says:

Muskegon will be getting at least 6 inches of snow during this event and maybe a lot more than that!

        2. Matt (Spring Lake) says:

I sure hope so. I am getting pretty tired of the disappointments.

        3. fixxxer says:

          Matt stop listening to rj.

  22. Travis Ulberg (West of Martin, Allegan County) says:

I wonder if next weeks lake effect snow can top my biggest snowfall from last winter? Which was 12″ (lake effect) from 1/12-1/14.

    1. Rocky (Rockford) says:

Yes, bet on it. You may double that!

  23. Michael (Berrien county) says:

There’s definitely cold & some snow on the way starting next week. The question is how much lake effect are we going to get? The 7 day water equivalent from the HPC gives everyone less than 1/2 inch thru next Weds. http://www.hpc.ncep.noaa.gov/qpf/p168i.gif Obviously the snow to liquid ratios will be rather high though. I’m thinking it’ll be more of a slower gradual buildup of the snow cover next week & beyond. Probably some advisory level events along with some clipper systems that the GFS is showing. I doubt there will be any huge dumpings for any one particular area, but most areas will see several inches of snow on the ground by the end of next week.

    1. Mike (Mattawan) says:

MUCH better than what we HAVE been getting over the past month or two! The way this winter is going, if an event can get us 5-6 inches of snow then that could very well be the biggest storm of the year! (i hope thats not a stretch)

      1. Slimjim says:

Even last winter we had several snows of around 6″ and I see no reason that can’t happen this winter.
        Slimjim

      2. Michael (Berrien county) says:

The thought of us finally getting in the double digits in terms of seasonal snowfall this winter makes me want to jump for joy nowadays. lol

    2. Rocky (Rockford) says:

Now you are talking and the GR area will be getting at least 6 inches of snow during this event!

    3. Irish coffee says:

Not in the HI-RES models wheelhouse yet Mike…that’s why amts(precip ) seem so low…GFS doesn’t usually pick up LES amts accurately(underdone) from this far out.

  24. big Daddy BC says:

    http://www.nasa.gov/topics/earth/features/2012-temps.html

NASA and NOAA announced that 2012 is the ninth hottest in 132 years of record keeping. It was the official hottest we’ve seen in the US. The hottest ten years on record all occurred since 2000. Shouldn’t there be a thread about that??? Or are we still denying it on good old Storm Team 8? LOL

    1. Mark (East Lansing) says:

It seems that a vast majority either don’t subscribe to the hype or just don’t care. For every study out there, there’s five others that will direct contradict that study.

      1. Zack says:

I like your style Bill. You are a straight shooter and don’t let your career keep you from saying what you think- I like that.

      1. Brad says:

Anthony Watts!? Does this guy even have a college degree?

        1. Robert (Plainwell) says:

Actually Brad it is quotes from your leader Hansen.

        2. Bill Steffen says:

So, you’d be willing to debate Mr. Watts if I got him here to G.R.? It should be easy for a really smart guy like you, Brad, or for bigDaddy…but bigDaddy might not have a degree. Even if he said he did, I wouldn’t believe him…he lies.

        3. big Daddy BC says:

LOL What is it with you and all the debate invites? First, you’ll get Maue to come debate. Now it’s Watts. Why won’t you debate, tough guy?

        4. Bill Steffen says:

All right, I’ll get a room, we’ll split any rental cost. 1 PM on 2/4 works for me. I’ll also arrange to have it taped and edited for YouTube. You’ll have to use your real name and agree to have to video in public domain so the students can see it.

        5. big Daddy BC says:

Sounds good, Bill. I say we sell tickets. We can use the proceeds to cover the cost of the room. Are you inviting Watts and Maue? …How about Craig James, or maybe you could get him on speed dial as a ‘life line?’ BTW, My real name IS bigDaddy, so that’s how you’ll address me. Should we agree on a list of topics, maybe questions, run it like a debate? Who’ll moderate? Dan? Paul? INDY?

        6. Bill Steffen says:

Honestly, I don’t think anyone would buy a ticket to hear us, bigD. I doubt Watts or Maue can make it. You need a moderator more than I do…you’re so extreme you really need to moderate. Hansen is moderating:

“The five-year mean global temperature has been flat for the last decade, which we interpret as a combination of natural variability and a slow down in the growth rate of net climate forcing.” – James Hansen et al.

You can do 20 minutes, then I’ll do 20 minutes You can talk about anything you like…Emergency Managers, the union goons trashing Clint Tarver’s catering equipment, how you want to force higher utility rates and $9 gasoline on the middle class. When you’re done I’ll wake the students up and do my presentation.

        7. big Daddy BC says:

Sounds like you’re backing out. No worries. You continually challenge people on here and then shrink away. It’s nothing new and won’t hurt you with the trailer park regulars on here. If the real public were to catch wind of your extremist opinions, I’m sure a few would love you for ‘em, but most would feel sick. You better wait till you retire and won’t have to worry so much about burying your fascist opinions on old threads. Let me know, the ‘students’ and I will be ready. ;)

        8. Bill Steffen says:

The school needs to know who you are. They have to keep the kids safe. They know me. They don’t know you. You lie, you insult, you’ve shown poor character. We don’t let just anyone in a school anymore. Most people would understand that.

In the meantime – you and Al Gore are losing another bet! http://wattsupwiththat.com/2013/01/19/so-far-al-gore-appears-to-be-losing-the-climate-bet/#more-77863

        9. big Daddy BC says:

As I suspected, more nonsense and a good old fashioned tail tuck. You’re good at that. At least you’re good at something.

        10. Bill Steffen says:

Just concerned about the children. All you need to do is agree to a mutual background check. What are you hiding??

When I talk – I’ll be sure to share this quote from “Handcuffs” Hansen: The five-year mean global temperature has been flat for the last decade…” – James Hansen et al.

I imagine you’ll try and change the topic…maybe start ranting about Emergency Managers.

        11. big Daddy BC says:

If you’re ever serious about publicly debating the issue, as I’ve said, let me know.

          At least somebody gets it.

          http://www.nytimes.com/2013/01/22/us/politics/climate-change-prominent-in-obamas-inaugural-address.html

        12. Bill Steffen says:

Republicans better get a spine on this…they’ll have help from some Democrats. There’s no way Senators like Mary Landreiu, Joe Manchin, Heidi Heitkamp go along with destroying their own state economies. Warner (VA), Begich (AK) and Hagen (NC) are all up for reelection in two years. There’s Baucus and Testor in Montana and Tim Johnson in SD.

Bottom line is that CO2 emissions are falling in the U.S.: http://content.usatoday.com/communities/ondeadline/post/2012/08/in-a-surprise-co2-emissions-hit-20-year-low/1 and even the most radical climate profiteers/alarmists have had to admit that global temperatures have leveled off:

19th anniversary of the 1994 cold wave. Hey Bill you should put up a blog about the 1994 cold wave. Very memorable event in Michigan.

    1. Brad (Lawrence) says:

Ha, I remember that one. I was 20 at the time and my girlfriend and I snuck off to stay the night at a hotel. In the morning my car wouldn’t start because it was sooooo cold. Guess who I had to call…my parents to come help me get my car started. Imagine they’re surprise when I told them where I was and who I was with. Oh well, married her a few years later and she has put up with me ever since. :P

      1. Tyler says:

Was this in Michigan? I do remember my Uncle’s car wouldnt start in Iron Mountain during that cold wave. I think they had to tow it or jumpstart it. The low in Escanaba got down to -25 during that cold wave. Inland in Iron Mountain it was -32. Amasa which is between Crystal Falls and Lanse on Highway 141 got down to -50 I believe.

  31. Katie in Kentwood says:

the models are showing the snow way up north and west michigan getting less than 2 inches, or none at all.

    1. Huh?? for what time frame are you talking about? You might want to take another look..

      1. Katie in Kentwood says:

the links bill posted for the 120 hour GFS model, and the other one.

  32. (Mike) Caledonia says:

I was also looking at the snowfall amounts. The 120 gfs has 2 inches. Sounds like all the hype is just that. No reason to get excited. :-(

    1. Rocky (Rockford) says:

The models are WRONG as usual. In this case they are underplaying the snowfall totals!
