Cold Thursday Night

January 17th, 2013 at 4:44 am by under Bill's Blog, Weather

Local    Thurs Night:  Check out the snow at noon in Tuscaloosa, AL.  4″ of new snow in Cullman, Alabama with 6″ at Ackerman, Mississippi.  Heavy snow in E. TN and W. NC right now.  Thundersnow in SE TN, NW GA and now in VA.   This time a snowstorm is moving from central Mississippi to northern Alabama, far N. Georgia, up thru the Smokies where 12-18″ could fall, thru Virginia and into Delaware and New Jersey.  And the snow repellent is still working in Muskegon!    Just scattered flurries this evening/overnight.  Temperatures teens inland to low 20s at the lake overnight.  Windy tomorrow with snow likely north of I-96 and a chance of flurries south of I-96.  There could be a couple of inches north of Newaygo Co. and an inch down as far as the Kent Co. border.  Slick roads are possible during the midday-afternoon north of a line from Holland to St. Johns.  If you plan on being out late Saturday evening/night, stay up with the latest forecasts.  I want to highlight the possibility of strong winds Saturday night especially.  We could easily see gusts to 40 mph inland and 50 mph at Lake Michigan as the Arctic front comes thru, along with a couple hours of moderate snowfall.  Roads could get slick and the combination of wind, snow, falling temperatures freezing up the roads quickly and poor visibility could make for some tough travel.  One model takes the wind at Muskegon up to 40 mph, with the temperature dropping 11 degrees in an hour!  That’s probably overdone, but it could make for a quick freeze-up and some icy roads.  This would occur around 11 PM – 1 AM, so it may not be that bad early Saturday evening.  The models continue to show very cold air, with daytime temperatures struggling to the mid teens Monday/Tuesday.  I still think most models are too low on snowfall from lake-effect.  The potential is there for +12″ snowfalls over 3 days in the best lake-effect bands with 18-24″ drifts.  All areas will see some snow and the ground is going to be white over all of Lower Michigan.          ALSO:  Thursday AM snowcover:  trace G.R., 1″ Lansing, Baldwin, Scottville, 3″ Cadillac, Gaylord, 8″ Newberry, 9″ Marquette, 14″ Grand Marais (6″ new overnight), 16″ Atlantic Mine.   A Flood Watch continues for the Muskegon River due to an ice jam in Mecosta Co.  There’s a Gale Watch for Lake Michigan.

Haven Lighthouse, the Spyglass Condos Weather Station by the Holland Channel, the Muskegon beach (when the wind is in knots – kts. – multiply by 1.15 to get mph), and the beach at Michigan City, Indiana. Snow cover as of 1/11 AM: 1″ Big Rapids, 2″ Baldwin and Houghton Lake, 4″ Cadillac and Lake City, 6″ Gaylord, 7″ Newberry, 8″ S. Ste. Marie and Grand Marais, 12″ Marquette. Check out the WOOD lightning tracker and U.S. lightning Marantha Webcam at Lake Michigan and links to webcams. Here’s the infrared satellite loop (night) and the visible satellite loop (daytime). Here’s Lake Michigan water temperatures. Here’s storm total rainfall for W. Michigan and E. Michigan. Here’s data from the mid-lake buoy (not available in winter) and the Wind Map. And…here’s the 84-hour NAM snowfall amount forecast for W. Michigan and the 120-hour GFS snowfall amount forecast. Here’s local storm reports from Iowa, Western Wisconsin, Eastern Wisconsin, and northern Michigan. Check out these webcams and the Snowman Cam from Gaylord. Here’s a few pictures of the last snowstorm. Here’s current U.S. temperatures.

A Flood Watch has been issued for the Muskegon River upstream of the Rogers Dam. An ice jam has caused river levels to rise and there is some water in yards on Riverside Drive (east side of the pond upstream from the dam).

  3. Rocky (Rockford) says:

GET READY GR! WINTER is coming! The GR area will be picking up at least 6 inches of SNOW during this arctic air outbreak and the SNOW belts will be picking up over 12 inches of SNOW! Let the fun begin. COLD, SNOW and WIND – the set up is looking FANTASTIC. ROCK n ROLL baby!

  4. Rocky (Rockford) says:

Get ready! The updated 5 day GFS snowfall maps shows the GR/Muskegon area getting 5 inches of snow and then we will be seeing more accumulating SNOW after that! ROCK ON!

    1. Irish coffee says:

That snowfall map is absurd! (read:will NOT verify) .. 5days out from 0z Thu gets us to Mon eve.. IF GR gets 4-5″ while n/c Van Buren county only gets 3-4″, i will treat every last blogger in here to TACOS and SPRITES!!

    3. Jimbo says:

I KNOW what INDY is Saying,,He’s My Friend!!!!

  6. Dan says:

I wonder if we get into a couple nice synoptic snow events in the next couple of weeks?
Looks like Winter will REALLY be here after this weekend!
I can’t wait to see how it plays out.
With the open waters of Lake Michigan and the Artic air, somebody in going to get dumped on, BIG TIME!! Maybe some of that will come a bit more inland!
Especially if the winds really crank up! What is the record amount of snowfall from Lake Effect? I know, not to long ago, they measured about 3 to 4 feet of snowfall in Buffalo from Lake Effect!

    1. Irish coffee says:

That’s NOTHING Dan…..go to Tug Hill (elev ~2000ft+ in places) You get fetch, orographic lift, pre-conditioning from Huron and Superior on occasion + upwards of 10″+/hr rates on rare occasions as well…truly a splendiferously awesome experience! Max depth OG was 108″ back in late 70′s….Buffalo rarely even sees 3ft OG, fwiw..

    2. Bill Steffen says:

In February, 2007, the had a multi-day snow binge on that left 141 inches of snow on the Tug Hill Plateau east of Lake Ontario in New York State.

  7. Travis (Oxford, MI) says:

NWS not sounding too bullish this AM for widespread snow in West Mich:

LAKE EFFECT SNOW SHOWERS ARE LIKELY LATE SATURDAY NIGHT AND SUNDAY WITH THE INITIAL SURGE OF ARCTIC AIR BUT SIGNIFICANT ACCUMULATIONS DO NOT LOOK LIKELY. THAT IS BECAUSE THE POLAR JET CORE IS OVERHEAD AND DOES NOT FULLY DIP SOUTH OF THE STATE UNTIL SUNDAY NIGHT. INVERSION HEIGHTS ARE PROGGED TO BE RELATIVELY LOW AT AROUND 5K FEETPRELIMINARY THOUGHT IS THAT THIS WOULD SEEM TO SUPPORT ONLY 1-3 OR 2-4 INCH TYPE SNOW ACCUMULATIONS IN THE NW FLOW SNOW BELTS FOR SUNDAY.

Sun – Tues: ONE CONCERN THAT REMAINS IS THAT THE VERY COLD AIRMASS WILL RESULT IN A LOW DGZ HEIGHT WHICH MAY LEAD TO ONLY FINE SNOWFLAKES AND COULD LIMIT ACCUMULATIONS.

    1. SlimJim NW GR (1) says:

You know a lot of ingredients have to come together for a good lake effect event to come together. Past history has indicated that forecasting this type of event several days out is not all that good. Also past history has indicated a lot of wind is not all that good either. Now as for the NWS ideas well they have been burned several times already this winter and may be playing it conservatively or they may be seeing everything as it is. One thing for sure there is a lot of hype on this blog and a lot of wishful thinking and of course some simple BS. That long with some who actually know what they are talking about in other words a good mix of ideas.
      SlimJim

    2. Irish coffee says:

They aren’t including impulses/disturbances taht will aid in raising inversion to ~ 10,000ft at times…but that’s to beexpected this FAR out as we won’t KNOW specifics/timing until perhaps late Sat/Early Sun

  8. Dan says:

They are covering for all the missed long range calls over the past couple of weeks! Still with the Arctic Blast hitting the open waters, somebody will get a BUNCH of snow!!!

    1. Travis (Oxford, MI) says:

Agreed, lake effect is always hit and miss. This one looks no different. Right now, GR is not expected to get significant snow if one is to believe NWS.

      1. SlimJim NW GR (1) says:

And I would tend to beleive that to be the case.
        SlimJim

  9. Mike (Mattawan) says:

Yeah… I really hope it begins to snow cause i really wanna shovel something believe it or not. I want to see a good snow storm. Hopefully this LE actually happens and isn’t another busts. Im cautiously raising my hopes.

    1. SlimJim NW GR (1) says:

I think there will be a day when you will see that happen as to when??
      SlimJim

  10. Tonka says:

Where’s fixxer when I need him , my spring/summer loving friend! Go away snow, go away!
Seriously though, you guys love snow, let it snow for ya!

  11. Matt (Spring Lake) says:

AH, another lovely ’12/’13 late fall morning… Brown ground, snow falling (just to the north), cold crisp air (somewhere in Canada), talks of the first big snowfall (going down the drain), radar looking great (oh wait, never mind). Just another day in the Westermuda Triangle…

2 more months of this? No, thanks……

    1. Travis (Oxford, MI) says:

hahaha so sad, yet so true. It does feel A LOT like fall and anticipating our first snowfall.

Don’t forget temps near 40 this weekend!

      1. Matt (Spring Lake) says:

:P perfect weather for planting my palm trees…

    2. GunLakeDeb says:

      You summed it up perfectly!!!

  12. Mindy ( Mason MI ) says:

One HYPE after another. The COLD thats COMING IS OVERDONE!!!……zzzzzzzzzzzzzz

    1. Matt (Spring Lake) says:

Uh oh, you are starting to type like ROCKY !!! It is spreading….

  13. Sprites says:

Sounds like the NWS thinks 1-4″ for Saturday night over the entire area, and then a foot or more Sunday through Tuesday for Ottawa allegan vanbueren cass berrien. Some areas near the lake will more than likely end up with 18″+

    1. Travis (Oxford, MI) says:

Wrong. I would go back and read the NWS outlook.

ONLY 1-3 OR 2-4 INCH TYPE SNOW ACCUMULATIONS IN THE NW FLOW SNOW BELTS FOR SUNDAY.

In other words, 1-4″ only for lake effect snow belts.

      1. Matt (Spring Lake) says:

That is just for Sunday though.

        1. Travis (Oxford, MI) says:

Yep, I was just referring to the Sat nite part. Certainly, select lake effect areas may receive lots of snow!

        2. Matt (Spring Lake) says:

Oh, ok. I have my doubts about the snow for Saturday night too. I know it is along the front and there will be dynamics at play…but with the strong winds I think the snow bands will be torn apart.

    2. GunLakeDeb says:

That’s not what I just saw on the 84 and 120-hr models. Here at Gun Lake, it looks like we have a 10% chance of getting greater than an inch of accumulation (figures.) by day 3

  14. Dan says:

Believe the NWS or not? What has been their track record as of late? It is a bit concerning when they are attempting to prognosticate based on being careful.
It could mean a couple of different scenarios! Operative word, COULD mean=somebody gets dumped on or Nobody gets anything as this is WAY OVER DONE!

  15. Matt (Spring Lake) says:

It has been snowing in Big Rapids…question is, will this band actually make it here?

    http://www.bigrapidsnews.com/

    http://radar.weather.gov/radar.php?rid=grr&product=N0R&overlay=11101111&loop=no

    1. GunLakeDeb says:

Nah – even if it does, I’ll bet not much is actually hitting the ground and sticking?

  16. DF (SE Mich) says:

I’m staying out of this since it is all West Michigan this time. Good luck getting some snow at least.

I do visit ofter over there though… why did the Taco Boy change names on 44th St? It was a land mark =)

    1. Katie in Kentwood says:

I know I am sad about that too :( I found out that all Taco Boy’s are changing to this new restaurant, it’s the same owners, and the original Taco Boy on Plainfield will stand.

      1. INDY says:

Thee Only Taco Boy what was a Landmark is the Plainfield and Mt. Pleasent ..They are changing the name same food just better copy rights for the company they have to change the name if they want to franchise out!! INDYY…..

        1. DF (SE Mich) says:

          I get it, thanks.

        2. Rumrunner says:

I know the owners. They went with Donks to kind of modernize it. Same food. Same good service.

        3. INDY says:

lolololo kind of modernize same great food same recipe for 30 years no need 4 modernize…..Trying to franchise using a different name same game try that ……INDYY

        4. Rumrunner says:

I was under the impression that franchising involved other owners… They own all of em. Maybe updating should have been the word I used. Didn’t mean to confuse you.

  17. millekat says:

Any idea of what GR will get for the LES event?

    1. DF (SE Mich) says:

Snow maps are up in Bill’s post.

      1. millekat says:

Thanks. I never know which one is the best one to look at either. Any recs?

        1. GunLakeDeb says:

Look at ‘em all, then say: “Eeny meeny, miney, moe…..”

  18. Jeff says:

Bill, one of the things I have noticed this winter is that the humidity has been what I consider to be unusually high for winter. Normally when the temperature is at or below freezing, the outside humidity drops. This winter is has remained in the 60 to 80 percentile, even when the temperature is at or below freezing. Am I correct in thinking this is highly unusual. If so, I believe that even though we are some what shielded by lake michigan, this approaching cold front, and high winds, could touch off a blizzard.

  19. bluegill says:

Picked up 5″ overnight here in NE Grand Traverse County. Been snowing all morning on top of that, so looking like we’re back into winter.

  20. Travis (Oxford, MI) says:

GR already up to 31. WOOD says high of 26?

    1. Bill Steffen says:

It’s always hard to know what to do when the temperatures will be falling. We could say the high is right now, but people can look at a thermometer. That’s not really a forecast. With a gusty cold wind it was going to feel colder than the temperature would indicate and the forecast temperatures were reached in the early afternoon north of G.R. and the mid-afternoon in G.R. (27 at 3 PM, 25 at 4 PM). Kalamazoo was 27 at 4 PM and 24 at 5 PM.

  21. INDY says:

He Travis maybe u should move to Grand Rapids u are so concerned about our weather!!!! I would think detroit has a weathe blog tell them what are temps are u probley will be shot!!! INDYY….

    1. Travis (Oxford, MI) says:

I’m a Grand Valley alum and am in GR all the time, Indy!

      1. INDY says:

Good keep spending the cash and we won’t clash anymore in our town thank u ……..INDYY…

  22. INDY says:

Grand rapids will have well over a foot of snow and lake shore will have well over 2 feet of snow once it starts its not going to stop we have snow for days ahead!!!!! with a west wind starts after the front rolls in look out Kent county, Grand rapids stay tuned 20-25 inches of snow coming to west Michigan!! INDYY…

  23. INDY says:

wow 18-24 drifts 4 west Michigan yupp PATTERN CHANGE!!! INDYY….

  24. Todd In Nunica says:

40-50 mph winds sat night……ive seen this……they will say 1-4″ after its done but all the snow will be in 1 corner of each lot. with 80-90% of areas “bare” ground. which is fine I dont mind drift hunting, this can be fun with most of the lot bare and a 2 foot drift over one side….ill take it but that amount of wind limits any lake enhancement for sure and makes the snow actually “skip” over the immediate lakeshore areas…..just my thoughts from seeing this kind of thing over the years.

    1. INDY says:

Yeaaa Todd thats system snow 2-4 inches wait to the lk effect starts and with winds gets rolling going to be a all out BLIZZARD coming!! INDYY…

    2. Matt (Spring Lake) says:

Yep, I was thinking the exact same thing, Todd. Pathetic winter.

  25. arcturus says:

Yes, just a dusting. Funny how some people get so caught up in hoping for more they get delusional but hey, anonymity always brings out the wack cases.

    1. Ullr says:

      Et tu arcturus?

      1. arcturus says:

Just a trend follower. More people should consider trend & persistency as overriding factors. They would be right more often.

        1. Bill Steffen says:

That explains all the “Psy” posters on your walls.

  26. fixxxer says:

i see more hype for this weekend. at least the suns out today. 60 days till spring folks!

    2. Jack says:

      75,Days TIL ..Det. TIGERS…HOME Opener…FIxxxxer… Ye ole SPORTS Fan !!!! ;-)

  27. Harry (Battle Creek) says:

This being a NNW flow event would mean not so much except WEST OF US 131.

This pattern isn’t going to break guys. We are going to have 3-4 days of COLD temps next week, then by Friday, temperatures are pushing mid 30′s again with a chance of RAIN from a storm system coming from the SW.

Models aside, we’ve got to look at our surrounding… History tells all. The chances of us going from current warmer and drier (as been for the past YEAR) are very very slim. I don’t see this change happening over night and then all of the sudden we get snowstorms… Not going to happen. I see temperatures cooling to subzero readings for a week or less (just as we were near 60 for a few days last week) then temps warming back to 30′s and 40′s with the majority of ANY system coming being rain or at most a sloppy mess.

Lake effect is going to be our only real shot at much snow, and that will be limited to west of 131. That being said, if you are west of 131 there are going to be several shots of 2-4 inches and as for Sunday into Monday the possibility of 8″+.

East of 131, flurries and partly cloudy skies will keep it a very boring (for lack of better words) except for one clipper that Bill is talking about for Saturday night. That clipper could bring 1-3″ for most of the area.

    1. I think you hit the nail right on the head. When Matt K. said N-NW wind that just did GRR in. The bubble is on, and I guess nobody want’s to find Fixxer and take the on off switch away from him. Come on fixxer just a little snow,PlEASE.

  28. Michael (Berrien county) says:

I’m still thinking widespread 3-6 inch amounts with some local 8 inch amounts possible in favored snow belt areas from Sunday thru Wednesday. After that, it remains a question. The GFS is hinting at a warmup with a rainstorm or mixed precip by Thursday, http://meteocentre.com/models/get_anim.php?mod=gfs&run=12&stn=PT&map=na&lang=en while it’s ensemble is saying more snow. http://meteocentre.com/models/get_anim.php?mod=gemglb&run=12&stn=PT&map=na&lang=en We’ll have to wait & see I guess.

    1. millekat says:

Saw that last night on Anderson Cooper. Absolutely hilarious! I love his attitude about the whole computer graphics failure. When life hands you lemons….

  32. Travis Ulberg (West of Martin, Allegan County) says:

If we really do only get what the 120 hr GFS snowfall is giving us, we might as well just give up on winter. I could see places getting as much as they forecast in a matter of a couple of hours with a moderate to heavy band of lake effect.

    1. Sprites says:

Don’t worry about forecast models predicting lake effect. They have never been able to get a good handle on it. It looks like the ingredients will be there for a long duration event of moderate to at times heavy lake effect for lake shore areas. I would put money on areas near the lake easily getting 12″+ over a three day period

      1. INDY says:

        Sprites is ready!! INDYY..

  33. INDY says:

MAJOR PATTERN CHANGE IS COMING 18-24 INCH DRIFTS STAY TUNED …..INDYY..

So much uncertainty with this Artic Blast coming…accuweather (or acculess) is forecasting 3-6 inches saturday night. They are also forecasting W or WNW winds until Tuesday night when it switches around to the NNW. But I’m sure by the time I am done writing this they will have it changed already lol

  39. michael g (SE GR) says:

Another short term forecast bust from the GR NWS, from this mornings update…

A BRIEF TROUGH OF ARCTIC AIR WILL BE OVER US…HOLDING DAYTIME TEMPS
MAINLY IN THE 20 TO 25 DEGREE RANGE.
