Click the pic. to enlarge. This is the MODIS Great Lakes satellite image from Sunday PM. Wisconsin is mostly clear (some high clouds moving west to east down toward the Indiana border. You can see the clouds that form as the colder air comes across the relatively warmer water of Lake Michigan. You can see that bigger and shallower Lake Winnebago is ice covered while smaller and much deeper Green Lake is still open water. Ice has started to form in Green Bay and you can see to the WNW of there, my infamous tornado scar from June 2007. The tornado went through a forested area and knocked down the trees, so in the open strip, it’s now snow covered and you can see a white streak. Here’s recent pictures of Lake Superior (from 1/17), Lake Ontario (from 1/17), Tropical Storm Narelle (1/11 off Australia) and an erupting volcano on the Kamchatka Peninsula in eastern Russia. Also, from the NWS at White Lake: “THE AIRMASS FOR THE EARLY PART OF THE WEEK IS IN RECORD TERRITORY BASED ON OUR UPPER AIR CLIMATOLOGY FROM THIS WHITE LAKE OFFICE AND PREVIOUS DATA FROM THE FLINT AREA. 1000-500 MB THICKNESSES VALUES AROUND 495 DAM AND 850 MB TEMPS AROUND -26 C ARE ARE IN THE BALL PARK FOR THE RECORDS (IN THE JAN 22-23RD TIME FRAME) (Record Cold). THE SAVING GRACE FOR SOUTHEAST MICHIGAN IS THE LACK OF SNOW COVER.”
Also, Gas prices went up today – to $3.49 a gallon here in downtown G.R. I filled up a couple days ago because I didn’t want to have to do it when the wind chill was -10.
We are having fantastic weather right now. There is nothing better than COLD and SNOW. I absolutely love the fact it is still snowing in GR and the lake effect might keep up for another 36 hours! It is great that all of the naysayers and snow haters were 100% WRONG! I love it!!!
Just got home from work. 2.5 mile drive in zeeland and I couldn’t see 5ft in front of my car. Doesn’t look like any plows have been out. Driveway is a lost cause. Wind is strong. My gosh is it cold. I’m wondering if its so windy and so cold, do the plows even waste their time? With the cold, salt can’t do anything. Thoughts?
Yes the plows will be out tonight, however salt is not very effective in these temps. They should be putting down some sand.
Generic salt only works to 15deg. (I believe that’s the temp anyways)Then you need chemicals in it. Hence all the sand on the roads, helps give some traction.
They make salt that works under zero below. Its just costs more.

I am looking forward to the weekend. The snowmobiles will be running. It is about time for the FUN to begin!!!!

I just did the drive from Coopersville to Grand Rapids on I96. Visibility was zero when a car got too close to you. The snow is so light and the wind is really blowing. Scary stuff!

Does anybody know if the lake effect is supposed to keep up throughout the night in the same areas with the same intensity? Any chance of school closing or delays at Caledonia tomorrow? I really dont want to wake up for school…
I have exams tomorrow so it doesn’t matter for me… I have to take them sometime, I might as well get them over with!
I usually have that same mentality, but I could really use another day off…we’re so behind on our snow days for this year we might as well use a few up while we still have a chance.
Well I’m not sure where your location is, but if your SW of GR, then you have a chance. I highly doubt I will
2.75″ in a sheltered area here. The high winds are pushing the heavy snow inland. Hopefully that will die down and get a bit more closer to the lakeshore.
So is the snow expected to maintain this intensity all night?

Well, now that I think about it, duh, the advisory goes until 5am. I guess that would tell me what they are thinking…
There is no doubt, if the lake effect keeps up most of the night, that there will be a lot of school closing and delays especially in Southern Kent, Ottawa and Allegan counties! Take it to the bank!

That’s exactly what I’m hoping for…Im really thinking the temperature is going to play a huge part in that as well…its supposed to be 4 degrees by 630 tomorrow morning, not taking into account the wind chill.
Kind of bummed we missed out on the bulk of it, hopefully the wind will shift a bit in our favor. Visited the parents in Jenison,and blew 4-5″ off the driveway
Tomorrow night and Wednesday will be better for you as the wind shifts westerly and maybe even a bit Southwesterly.

Just measured in a sheltered area on a picnic table on our porch and have a total of 5 inches so far, keep it coming!
It’s been uneventful up here in Cedar, mostly to partly sunny sky but than 3miles down south of 17mile it was almost white out, get closer to 17 mile it clears up. My boys will have school as long as Rockford Public has it.

Down to 4* here around Knapp and Beltline with moderate to heavy snow and blowing snow it’s gonna be a cold one tonight!
5.5″ of snow up here on the ground roads are very slippery and snow covered…getting some moderate to heavy bands coming through about every 30 mins or so!!!
Also I have 2° here with a wind chill of around -20°……brrrrrrr

I actually hope they are. A lot of teachers and students could use the extra day of rest. I have had so many students out for entire weeks at a time with these nasty colds and flus. I heard on the radio yesterday that the average cough withthecurrent cold is 18 DAYS…holy cow!
Yup i just got back from walgreens and all of the lysol and most of the cold medicine was sold out. Nasty stuff this year. My friends kid had 105 fever last night…yuck.
Yikes. My poor wife is on day 6. I have been pumping Zinc/Zicam, Vitamin C, etc… To keep it at bay. So far, I have only had little bouts of sore throat, but my immune system has succeeded, thank God.
I got the “cough” day after Thanksgiving, coughed my lungs up (on and off it would flair up then get better) till after Christmas, finally when it came back really bad went to see the doc, had bronchitis, round of antibiotics and I was all better
My kid had the flu all last week, missed the whole week of school not bad fevers but constant, took her to the doctor last Fri, ear infection, she is currently on antibiotics.
My wife had bronchitis as well just after Christmas…
Daughter in law (who is living with us while my son finishes Army AIT) had sinus infection two weeks ago…..
I am HAPPy to spend time in the truck…get away from all this sickness…lol We spent all day Sat wiping down pretty much the whole house.
Did you know that in 1928 28th st was called Beals Rd from Divison west and from Division east it was Laraway Rd.I have a 1928 Grand Rapids Telephone Directory and it shows this in there.44th st was Sunnyside Rd.

Just drove home from Zeeland to Allendale, times of complete white outs in the open areas, not a fun drive!
Does anyone have any insight to the current radar trends that show the LES moving down the lake, and away from GR?
Wish I knew the answer Tom. I think the bands will fluctuate throughout the next 24 hours. Hopefully Cort will chime in with some better details.
LES banding is so fascinating to watch on radar. I love the Great Lakes.
The bands are drifting around, it was snowing pretty hard 15 minutes ago but only flurries at the moment. Been at 9° for much of the day. –10 wind chill, yikes.
I’ve had 6.7″ since it started early Sunday morning, with a current snow depth of 5″.
That is probably about the same here…maybe a little less than you. It is so hard to tell with wind and compaction.
Yup, exactly. I drove my snowmobile on the trail to the gas station a few miles away, and places in the fields definitely had over 5″. Probably closer to 6 or 7″. And my 6.7″ might be a little low, since about 2″ of the snow compacts it down to like 1.5″.
At least 6 inches in Alamo township in Kalamazoo County.
The lake effect looks like it is almost cut off by US-131. Crazy how that is usually the cut off line.

Well plowed another (average of 2″) some bare areas, some 6″ drifts. Pretty easy night. STILL have got WAY more here in Nunica than anywhere else I have plowed. Looked like another 3.5-4″ since 3pm yesterday.

Looks like everyone can be happy today! General 2-6″ snowfall for the snow nuts but not as much as predicted for the warm weather nuts. The lake effect snow machine is sure having trouble kicking into gear. You’d think it would be going crazy with as cold temps as we’re seeing.
