Snow Ends

January 23rd, 2013 at 4:33 am by under Bill's Blog, Weather

Local    Lake-Effect Snow Warning overnight for Berrien, LaPorte and St. Joseph (Indiana) Counties for up to 1/2-foot of snow.  At this hour, the snow has ended east of US 131 and is moving offshore and down into Berrien Co. and N. Indiana.  Roads in many areas are snow-covered and slippery this Thursday AM.  It’s cold with nice crunchy snow.  Up to 23″ of snow has fallen in Allegan Co. in the last four days with drifts as high as 2-3 feet.  Very little snow fell northeast of Grand Rapids.    We’ll get a break from the snow on today (Thurs.) with a little sunshine, before another system  (not lake-effect) gives us another 1-4″ of snow on Friday, when the heaviest accumulations could be from Muskegon north to Manistee.  We may warm briefly to 40 about next Tues. night, before turning colder again.  There is a chance of mixed precipitation early next week, which could be partly rain or freezing rain.   The GFS has some cold and snow to close out the month. Snowing really hard in beautiful downtown Hamilton…

  2. SW Kent says:

GFS is looking warmer for next week. Showing upper 40′s…..let wait for a few more runs before we buy into this.

    1. Mike in Hamilton says:

Cpc has us bullseyed in the coldest air on their 8-14 day outlook.

      http://www.cpc.ncep.noaa.gov/products/predictions/814day/814temp.new.gif

      1. SW Kent says:

The 8-14 day begins next Thursday, I mentioned a possible big warm-up for next Wednesday before the cold front pushes thru.

    2. fixxxer says:

Im also seeing a warming trend coming. We shall see, one can hope.

  3. Swatz_Zoo(Cedar Springs) says:

ONly about an inch up here over the last 2 days.

    1. fixxxer says:

Lucky you swatz. Hope it starts dying down soon here.

  4. Travis Ulberg (West of Martin, Allegan County) says:

Snowing insanely hard here! 2-3″ an hour snowfall rates! We’ve had 5″ of snow so far today!

    1. Went out to the trails and it was very hard to even see where we were going it was snowing so hard.

      1. Redd_Leader (Hamilton) says:

Was about to head out to the West loop myself, but blew a stop sign on the way. Yep visibility too bad even for snowmobiling!

        1. GunLakeDeb says:

Yikes! A local girl was killed several years ago when she missed a stop sign during a whiteout and was hit by a truck :-(

  5. Can anyone tell me how bad 131 is from Grand Rapids to Cedar springs. I have to drive up that way at 11:00 tonight.

  6. KevinS (Saugatuck) says:

Great returns on the radar right now in some areas…the lake had exploded. Awesome to see on radar. To me weird why not warnings for this but, it is what it is. Take what we can get and right now I’m loving it.
Looking at at least a few more hours of decent snow…hopefully longer

  7. SBPortage002 says:

Well, after a pretty much snowless, quiet day here in Portage it has been snowing for about a couple hours and looks like no sign of stopping soon. Roads are getting covered quickly. Slow and steady is the word tonight.

  8. Katie in Kentwood says:

Back to snowing lightly with tiny flakes…come back big fluffy lake effect!!

    1. SBPortage002 says:

The flakes here are tiny also.

  9. Tom S says:

Looks like you can see the bands and lake effect as a whole start to make the shift as the wind turns more North, bet snow will stop in GR by 8:30

    1. Yes indeed it is, its kinda interesting to see the winds shift more north as we speak

  10. Bald Eagle (Montague) says:

Last 2 days finally got some snow! About 6 inches! Had to use the snowblower today! ( only the 2nd time this season) see what happens Friday if I get a dumping, or another disappointment! Unrelated to weather not, I use the weather app on my phone from wood tv8, intact that’s how I read this blog & post. They have “updated” this app recently & what a disappointment! Bill, is there anyway you could pass along to the powers that be that this new app is terrible & makes it very hard for people to keep up with things like this awesome blog & other news? Sorry to go off subject, I know this is always a very weather only blog. LOL (dripping with sarcasm)

  11. fixxxer says:

Anybody elses kids go to godwin public at all? My daughter told me over half her class was out yesterday. Thinking it was becuase of the weather but if it was due to illness dont the schools notify the parents?

    1. Lisa (Caledonia) says:

I’m guessing weather. If it was illness, they would just close the school. Schools can’t count a day as part of the required number of school days if a certain percentage of the student body isn’t there, so they would be paying for hourly staff, electricity, etc. for a school day that doesn’t count. Better to close.

  12. I guess the Jenison area has reported 10-12″ of snow…It is currently snowing very hard here

  13. KevinS (Saugatuck) says:

Ok Cort, or anyone else that really knows what’s going on…let’s hear your in depth summary of way and what factors have led to the lake absolutely exploding in the last 4 hours or so. Interested to see why its been so how to get these ingredients to come together past few years..

    1. Cort S. says:

A synoptic disturbance has moved through the region, which provided an enhanced amount of lift and moisture. It was snowing in Wisconsin and it was heading toward us, and the lake just added to that. The height and depth of the Dendritic Growth Zone was perfect for big snowflake growth. Near the ground, wind directions across our area were such that air was converging in on itself, and all that air piling up can only go upwards, enhancing lift further and creating those heavy bands.

      1. Harry (Battle Creek) says:

Must be the cold/dry air over here over-powered the better lift and moisture from the upper level disturbance. Pixie dust fell here. Only about a quarter inch.

  14. KevinS (Saugatuck) says:

Can definitely see the north wind beginning to eat away at this…nice 4 day event, can’t complain

  15. AnnieJ (131/68th) says:

Just came down 131, Alpine to 68th Street: slow going, about 40mph. Lanes are visible but snow covered areas between are wide. South of 28th the snow is heavier and the lanes are not so discernable. Good thing I knew where the 68th Street ramp was, because I couldn’t see it. And this area is only in a light blue section on the radar!

  16. Ionia county was just dropped from the Advisory I do believe

My husband and daughters just came to visit me at Saint Mary’s hospital and my husband called me when he got home (Hudsonville) and said. “Well, that was a white knuckle drive home.” I guess whiteouts!

  18. Todd In Nunica says:

looks like its well on its way to shutting off (at least in my neck of the woods)

Heaviest band now well south of Grand Haven

Im going to real busy taking photos tomorrow, havent seen this kind of event in some time

Wonder how much it will compact when temps hit 40 on Tues…lol

  19. Nathan says:

Winds are shifting, snow if leaving…

  20. ptmartin12 says:

Snow showing up on radar in Wisconsin Will that get a boost from Lake Michigan?

  21. Lisa (Caledonia) says:

Snow is still coming down steadily. I’m guessing we’ll get at least 2-3″ more before midnight.

    1. GunLakeDeb says:

We went to Logan’s for dinner (yum!) and the backroads were heavily snow-covered/slick/traffic was moving slowly. But the snow must have stopped for us before 10:30, because that’s when I shoveled a path across the deck for our dogs to get to the yard, and this morning, that section was still snow-free. There was about 5″ of snow in the driveway from Wednesday’s snowfall.

  22. Jill says:

Snowing like crazy on south side of Holland.

  23. Amber (Allegan Lake) says:

Allegan Public Schools Closed 1/24/2013 Per Allegan Public Schools Facebook Status… SNOW DAY CANCELLATION for ALLEGAN PUBLIC SCHOOLS — No School tomorrow, January 24. Looks like winter is back with a vengeance!
Snow still Piling up here!! Well over a foot and approaching 2 feet.

  24. Michael (Berrien county) says:

NWS just pulled the trigger on a Lake effect snow WARNING for Berrien, LaPorte, & St. Joseph counties. YEEEEEHAAAAAAWWWWWW!!! http://forecast.weather.gov/showsigwx.php?warnzone=MIZ077&warncounty=MIC021&firewxzone=MIZ077&local_place1=&product1=Lake+Effect+Snow+Warning

  25. Todd In Nunica says:

wind just picked up here, my first thought was NOOOO its gonna blow all the snow off the trees by morning….lol

    1. Matt (Spring Lake) says:

Lol. We have gotten dumped on this evening. Somewhere in the 4 to 6 inch range just over the past several hours with more bands hugging the coast.

      1. Todd In Nunica says:

yea gonna be a busy night tonight for sure. this 4 days really went out with a bang.

    2. Jack says:

Well Todd.. HE will, paint Them White for You again, Soon…. CUE: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x_Wi5vgTe7Y

  26. Swatz_Zoo(Cedar Springs) says:

Pretty boring up in Cedartucky, not much to talk about at all.

  27. Robert Wiersema says:

It was literally falling at over three inches an hour. I know. I was doing a Sisyphus and shoveling my driveway. After just forty minutes, the area I had shoveled required it again, and measured over four inches. (I’m being conservative on the ‘per hour’ thing.)

    1. Robert Wiersema says:

      Dorr

  28. Brian(Grandville) says:

Looks like parts of Allegan, and Ottawa counties are getting buried. I think it was Irrish Coffe that said a few days ago, it would very possible for someone in those areas to pick up close to 2 feet this week. Pretty good prediction sir.

    1. Irish coffee says:

      Thank you!!!

  29. North side of holland says:

    White white baby !

    1. Rocky (Rockford) says:

      +1

  30. Rocky (Rockford) says:

Nice 4 day event especially considering many bloggers were calling this a bust after the first day of the event! Too funny! Coming up for GR 2 – 4 inches on Friday and then another 2 -4 inches Sunday night and Monday! Keep the COLD and SNOW coming. This is FANTASTIC. We are entrenched in a GREAT PATTERN!!!

    1. Nathan (Forest Hills) says:

      Hopefully!,

    2. Brian(Grandville) says:

RDB model is on target. Looks like after a brief warm up early next week, it’s back to more winter weather for some time. Get out the ski’s, snow machines, and the ice fishing rods.

    3. Scott (west olive) says:

The first 2 days were a bust!

  31. Harry (Battle Creek) says:

I’m happy with the 4″ I received in the 4 day time frame. Just a little more than I predicted here in Battle Creek.

not sure on Kalamazoo and Grand Rapids official snowfall reports, but I bet they vary GREATLY depending on location… i.e. Burlington, MI at 2″ and Ceresco at 4″. (8 mile difference)

Looks like 40′s and rain a couple days next week! Quite the toss up from 8° yesterday!

    1. Irish coffee says:

Did not hear “official” total Harry for Kazoo..but pretty sure they managed >8″ thru Wed pm,fwiw

      1. Irish coffee says:

ps- Harry— Mon(1-21) @ ~7pm you stated you had “almost 6″ already….+ whatever fell between Mon eve> Wed pm– yet now you claim you received 4″ in 4 days TOTAL????Huh?

  32. Rachelle says:

Is anyone up in the Muskegon area? Just wondering what the roads are looking like so I can set my alarm waay to early for my trip from grand rapids in the morning, thanks!

  33. Nick (Grand Haven / West Olive) says:

Still getting about 15-20 min heavy burst of snow. I like the way the LES has set up, seems to drop more when each band passes!

  34. Michael (Berrien county) says:

Complete whiteout right now!! Gotta be some 3-4… maybe 5 inch per hr bursts coming on in. This is wild!

  35. Tom (Wyoming) says:

Does anyone how much we got total in SW Kent over the past 4 days?

    1. SW Kent says:

13 inches in Byron Center….about 8 inches on the level

  36. Mike Geukes says:

    Upcoming SKYWARN training.
    http://www.crh.noaa.gov/grr/skywarn/training/

I will not be attending. Back to hibernating,
for a long time. I do not pay much attention to
the weather these days, so I rarely post anymore.
I will leave it up to the experts on here.

    1. Nick (Grand Haven / West Olive) says:

Do need any classes or anything before these?

      1. Cort S. says:

No prerequisites for these, but if you enjoy learning more about the weather, you can always do so at your leisure!
        http://www.srh.noaa.gov/srh/jetstream/

  37. Travis Ulberg (West of Martin, Allegan County) says:

We received 6.75″ today, and 16.45″ since Sunday morning. Over a foot on the ground, with drifts of 2-3′. But that is nothing compared to what is 5-10 miles west of my house…look at this amazing snow at the Burger King in Allegan! It was past my knees(20″+), and it was snowing insanely hard when we left there. 2-3″ an hour snowfall rates. All the roads had at least a foot of snow on them. There is more snow there than when we had the blizzard a few years ago!

      AWESOME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    5. Judy says:

It just dumped on us yesterday afternoon! They must have stopped plowing Monroe Rd/118th Ave hours before I came home because I was having to drive through piles of snow that were easily 6+” deep in places and try to follow the ruts left by previous drivers. They didn’t plow again until 5:30 this morning. We had our plow guy come and clear out the driveway….gave him an extra $5 because it was so deep. Thankfully, it was fluffy so we hadn’t had any issues getting in or out.
