Lake-Effect Snow Watch

January 30th, 2013 at 12:30 pm by under Bill's Blog, Weather

A Lake-Effect Snow Watch has been issued by the GRR NWS for the lakeshore counties and the next set of counties inland (Lake, Newaygo, Kent, Barry and Kalamazoo Counties) for 6-12″ of new snow from this evening through Friday.  We’ll see light to occasionally heavy snow, slick roads, cold temperatures and wind chill factors falling to near zero.  If you look at the graphic here, we also have river flood advisories.  Check river levels here and here.   Here’s Caribou Snow forecasts off the (NAM, GFS) thru Sat.   Grand Rapids (8.2″, 6.2″), Muskegon (8.0″, 10.2″), Kalamazoo (7.5″, 5.7″), Cadillac (6.9″, 9.2″), Mt. Pleasant (1.6″, 1.6″ – snow desert).  The European has 0.17″ precip. for G.R. and at a 20-1 water-to-snow ratio, that would be 3 1/2″ of snow.  In any case, there will be snow to play in this weekend, and ski areas should be able to get back pretty close to decent conditions for the weekend.  Also, there is still snow up north – Weds. AM snowcover:  4″ Traverse City, 7″ Gaylord, 14″ Newberry, 16″ Marquette, Charlevoix, 17″ S. Ste. Marie, 24″ Grand Marais.  Here’s forecast snow off the NAM model (thru 3 1/2 days) and the GFS model (thru 5 days)  “.

Also, check out the video of the huge tornado that crossed I-75 north of Atlanta this AM.  More video here.  Adairsville has hit by a strong tornado on 4/28/11.  “ADAIRSVILLE.EMERGENCY MANAGER CONFIRMS THAT APPROXIMATELY 100 CARS OVERTURNED NEAR EXIT 306 ON INTERSTATE 75.”

I haven’t seen as much “snow up to 15.0 in” on the NAM since maybe the Ground Hogs Day Blizzard? Hoping for a decent snowfall tomorrow to reach 30″ for January.

Not sure if there is a deffination for flash freeze but I do not think temp falling to 29 can be called a flash freeze.

      1. Swatz_Zoo(Cedar Springs) says:

I assume that a Flash Freeze is when temps get below 32 with strong wind and everything freezes up in a flash.

    1. Todd In Nunica says:

wow that much already? I just went out to the East side of my garage where it drifts and measured about 1/4″ Guess I might be plowing after all tonight.

      1. Matt (Spring Lake) says:

Yup, the grass is almost all covered. We had a nice heavy burst for a while. My area seems to be in a great location, thank goodness!

I wonder if this is purely synoptic, with no lake involvement. If it is, it will be our biggest synoptic snowfall of the season. Lol, how sad…

  28. Scott (west olive) says:

31 out here is ice along with side streets.

  29. Stacsh says:

Ha barely snowing, take it easy people its january.

  30. wyoming dog says:

Cold and windy outside,a front went through and misty rain turned to snow real fast.Hope everybody takes it easy tomorrow.Wyoming.

  31. Travis Ulberg (West of Martin, Allegan County) says:

The up to 15″ area is a little bigger on the 00Z NAM. Not sure if it will happen, but it seems to place the heaviest lake effect snow in the right places. Wood’s forecast map looks very similar to this with where they are predicting the heaviest snow.

  32. INDY says:

Heavy snow out thee YARDofBRICKS with a west wind just about 2 inches on the ground over 10 more coming with a warning by morning …stay tuned..INDYY..

  33. Travis Ulberg (West of Martin, Allegan County) says:

Any idea on what the snow to water ratio will be? Somewhere between 20:1 and 25:1 I’d assume?

  34. Matt (Spring Lake) says:

The grass is gone again here! YAY!!!!

  35. Katie in Kentwood says:

What a scary drive home from Newaygo…roads and freeways were pure ice. The blowing snow is pretty though

    1. Matt (Spring Lake) says:

Glad you made it home safely! I wonder if there will be a snow day tomorrow with ice-covered roads and blowing snow.

  36. Jack says:

Glad Ya, Made it Safely !!!! :-) . Katie !,,

    1. Katie in Kentwood says:

      thanks!

  37. Tyler says:

We got another 4 inches here in Escanaba today! Yesterday it got up to 40 with light rain all day. I had to work outside all day at work and it was gorgeous. Now it is down to 16 with very heavy winds up to 20 mph. The snow is over now but we got another 4 inches. Two days ago we had 5 inches. That puts Escanaba at least to 33 inches on the year! We had 41 inches all of last year.

  38. Jimmy James says:

Lots of snow coming down and the grass is already all covered here in Jenison!

  39. Jack says:

    I wouldn’t be 2 Surprised , If TODAY, We See A Few LAKE EFFECT SNOW WARNINGS !!! Thoughts ……Anyone !! .?

    1. Travis Ulberg (West of Martin, Allegan County) says:

If this wind dies down a little more so the bands can set up and become heavier. But they didn’t even issue warnings last week when we had 2-3″ per hour snowfall rates Wednesday evening.

      1. Jack says:

That was kinda my DRIFT ( pun intended ). , Maybe they have Learned from Their Mistakes ! Just SAYIN…

    Good Thur. Morning BILL: Have U Ever seen This Cartoon ?? I think U will get a Chuckle !!!! ;-) . http://www.cartoonstock.com/lowres/sma0029l.jpg.

  41. Todd In Nunica says:

Just did my run through of my plow route and nothing really worth noting in Spring Lake area. Its just blowing around, did not see any drifts over 1″ so I just scraped it and came home. (large areas are bare pavement) Now the roads…they are TERRIBLE. first snow that came down melted and now has froze leaving a glare ice layer under what little snow we got out here. I was happy when I got farther away from the lake and the snow was sticking more, least there a bit more traction on the snow.
