Local     We have several periods of light snow coming.  There is a Lake-Effect Snow Advisory until 7 PM Monday for Ottawa, Allegan, Van Buren, Kalamazoo, Berrien and LaPorte (Indiana) Counties.  We have a Winter Weather Advisory for Calhoun, Cass, St. Joseph (MI) and Branch Counties, plus much of Northern Indiana and NW Onio.  Snow showers and flurries continue.   Snow may accumulate an inch inland (NE) and 2-4″ in a few favorable lakeshore areas.  Roads will have slick spots.  The wind has come up as expected this afternoon and caused some drifting.  A band of snow later tonight nto Monday AM may produce 1/2 to 2″ of snow.  That could make things a little slippery for the Monday AM commute. The next batch of light snow comes in about mid-afternoon Tuesday into Tuesday night…another 1-2″.  The fourth batch of precipitation may start as a mix late Thurs. and go over to snow.  The European has more precipitation than the GFS and I’ll lean that way for now.  That could be several inches of snow (if it’s all snow).  The European would have G.R. briefly below zero both Tues. AM and Sat. AM, though that may be a little cool.  It’ll be a relatively cool week, though we should get to the mid 30s late this week.  The models hint at a warm-up with some rain possible late Sunday into Monday of next week, maybe into the low-mid 40s briefly.  Then, it looks cool around mid-month with temperatures back to or slightly below average.   For current Michigan weather observations and wind speeds, click here. Ok, I’m REALLY ready for April now…..

    1. TomKap (Michigan St. & Fuller) Grand Rapids says:

..and I’m a tad surprised at your comment about ‘cold mid-month’, considering this:

      I love discrepancies. :)

      1. Matt (Spring Lake) says:

There are many different models to follow. Makes sense there are differences…

      2. joanne says:

I was surprised at that too Tom. I keep reading a warm up during mid-month. I guess we will see.

        1. Matt (Spring Lake) says:

I have seen many runners out on the roads this weekend. It makes me a bit nervous for them as many roads are still snow packed and drivers do not have complete control of their cars on these roads. Also, with all the plow trucks zooming in and out of driveways, it can be even more dangerous. Safe running for you all!

      3. yup the CPC has been consistent on above normal temps and precip the past several days – they show cold air out west and warm air east. if you remember a couple years ago their monthly model runs for winter were the same but proved to be the opposite – lets hope they are wrong this time also

        1. Cort S. says:

Their 6-10 and 8-14 day outlooks are usually much more accurate than their monthly outlooks, which I guess isn’t surprising. Especially when they start using probabilities greater than 60%. There is a warmup trending toward the end of next week in the forecasts, especially for those living in the states to our south.

        2. Cort S. says:

The end of this week, rather.

  2. lMike (Shepherd, Mi) says:

Unless by mid month he means after feb 16…

  3. joanne says:

Justing starting to snow south of GR. Very light, you can hardly see it, but I could feel it on my face while I was out running.

  4. Irish coffee says:

NWS pretty BULLISH on snowfall by Tue. for So Haven area– up tp a 1′+ total….i’m 11 miles due east of there w/ 14″ OG currently….warm-up late week looks to be short-lived; agree w/ Bill on back to COLD by mid-month!!YEAH!!

  5. Nathan (Forest Hills) says:

Normally I don’t think 1-2 inches is a lot.. But it all adds up and it will ice up the roads again!

  6. Rocky (Rockford) says:

Keep the COLD and SNOW coming. It looks like a GREAT week of weather coming up, then a brief warm up and then back to a lot of COLD and SNOW! It sounds like the Thursday storm has some potential! Maybe this will be the blizzard that the JEM model has been predicting! In the meantime get outside and enjoy this FANTASTIC weather!!!!!

  7. Dan says:

Looks like there there are some discrepancies between the long range forecasts!
NWS is saying a warm up. Who will be right on with this one? I would put my money on Bill!! Wood TV 8 called it accurately for the past few snow events!!
Until then, snow, cold and more snow! We look to be above freezing for the Thursday system. Does this mean freezing rain and/or sleet? I would like it much more if it were ALL snow!

    1. Rocky (Rockford) says:

It will be all SNOW from GR and points Northward!

      1. SW Kent says:

        No, there will be rain.

        1. Rocky (Rockford) says:

Check back with me on Thursday or Friday and we will see who is correct. GR will NOT be seeing any rain with the Thursday event!!!!! All SNOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  8. Rocky (Rockford) says:

Check out the current radar. It clearly shows the bubble in full effect :)

  9. Dan says:

Saw Bill helping Laura this morning on the 6 am news cast. Bill, don’t you ever sleep? Thanks for all your dedication! Season Snow fall totals are impressive to date, since we started with nothing. It seemed like we were going to go way under our forecasted amounts. Looks like we are beginning to once again put a dent in those snow fall totals. GR, officially 32.7 inches of snow for the season. Who knows how the rest of this Winter will go. Interesting to note that we received MOST of our snow in the last couple of weeks!

    1. I agree – Bill – the weather studio must be your second home – thanks for your dedication and hard work at WOOD and the church and all your other endeavors – God bless

  10. Nice light snow here and 13 degrees – the snow blowers and shovels have been getting a good workout here – as I have – good for exercise especially at my age….

    1. Matt (Spring Lake) says:

Sure is! I LOVE shoveling, especially at night. Good workout, peaceful, and beautiful glow to the surroundings. I asked the neighbors if my shoveling bothers them and they said they didn’t notice, so all is good there!

    2. Paul says:

We can still see the grass here in Alma, what a rotten winter, less than 8 inches all winter, hate it.

  11. Dan says:

Just started snowing here about 20 minutes ago. Seems to be picking up in intensity a little bit now! SNOW, SNOW, SNOW! LETS GO, GO, GO!! Take it SLOW, SLOW, SLOW!

  12. Tonka says:

I would like to thank all the road crews! I’m sure they have had some sleepless nights lately. I was amazed at Chicago drive in zeeland/holland yesterday at 6am. By 6pm it was practically clear, or as clear as it possibly could be. To the drivers who always drive way to fast in this stuff SLOW DOWN. Nothing is more important than getting home safely for all of us. Take a deep breath and let of the gas a touch. Everyone have a great Sunday.

    1. Matt (Spring Lake) says:

      Thank you! I agree.

  13. Paul (Barry State Game Area/eastern Yankee Springs Twp) says:

Getting a moderate to heavier snow here now. No wind, just a good, steady snow.

  14. DF (SE Mich) says:

The NWS has nothing above 35 degrees through next Saturday here. It made it to -1 last night here.

    1. Rocky (Rockford) says:

Now that I believe and GR will be even colder than that. Bring on the COLD and SNOW!!!!!!!!!

  15. Dan says:

Yes, Tonka! I want to also add in my thanks to the road crews! I think, they have done an outstanding job!! There was a TON of snow on the roads yesterday early in the morning. By about 3 pm, the roads were in much better shape!
Thanks for your countless hours of effort to make our road much safer to travel in conditions like these!!

  16. INDY says:

    1. Blue Moon says:

  18. INDY says:

    1. Dan says:

  21. Nathan says:

Bill, NWS says up to ten inches SW of GR… Ill post the link in a second

  22. Katie in Kentwood says:

So GR is already at around 32 inches for the season, a foot and a half under the average. Much better than last winter so far where we had 40 something inches.. I hope we end up with lots more snow to hit our average!

    1. fixxxer says:

I dont. Im about fed up with it.

    2. SlimJim NW GR (1) says:

GR ended last winter with just over 50″ its very hard to guess a winters snow fall total and with lake effect its just that much harder.

  23. Uncle sparkee says:

Taking your ol aunty Edna for a snowmobile rise across the lake. Making her way floatys just in case. Could get crazy!!

  24. TACO BOY says:

    Again Fixxxer u need a job…Fed up or not….TACO BOY…..

    1. fixxxer says:

And you need a life. Dont worry about what i do.

  25. Nathan says:

    What does 18z mean??

    1. GunLakeDeb says:

It’s called Zulu time – or universal time, as set in Greenwich, England. For us, during Easter Standard Time, subtract 5 hours from Zulu; which means 13 o’clock, or 1 PM. Once we go to Daylight Savings time, subtract 4 hours.

  26. Nathan says:

And btw it is snowing at a pretty good clip right now

  27. Sprites(Holland) says:

Pretty much non stop snow here since Wednesday night. Love it. Over a foot on the ground, and probably closing in on 20″ for the week before to long.

    2. GunLakeDeb says:

I’m really baffled by the wind forecast: the Weather Channel is saying 20 to 30 mph; but the NWS Graphical Hourly Forecast is saying 8 mph for this afternoon. And here’s the Discussion saying 30.

      HUGE discrepancy!!

      1. Cort S. says:

The NWS forecast is keeping the stronger winds closer to the lakeshore this afternoon. There are several airports around the area gusting into the 20s.

    3. Cort S. says:

Blah, AccuWeather is just rebroadcasting the NWS bulletin. Accu#%*! :)

  29. Travis Ulberg (West of Martin, Allegan County) says:

Well we picked up another 7″ yesterday morning, and 2.5 more inches this morning. There are places west of me that have at least 18″ on the ground. I got some awesome video going through all the deep powder on my GoPro camera yesterday. We have received 21.35″ so far since Wednesday night, and 42.35″ since January 20th. We have over 15″ on our deck, here are the pics…

    1. Nathan says:

Wait, is Grand Rapids getting this?!

  31. Rocky (Rockford) says:

It looks like the SNOW is picking up in intensity and coverage. What a simply FANTASTIC day outside. Temps in the teens with SNOW. I don’t see how it could be any better! Plenty more SNOW in forecast for next week. I love it!! I am heading out to the trails to enjoy this GREAT WINTER WEATHER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    1. GunLakeDeb says:

Rocky – I hope you had some good riding!! Believe it or not – we stayed off the trails because of the heavy snow!! I ran into some snowmobilers at the grocery store – and they said visibility was very bad; and quite frankly, Hubby and I don’t know our way around yet…LOL!! I know that sounds crazy – but there’s few landmarks around here – just fields and woods. Miss a turn and you end up?????? Swimming in some farmer’s cow pond that’s barely frozen?? My neighbor went through the ice yesterday – stepped off his dock and went SPLASH! Lakes are NOT safe.

    1. Scott (west olive) says:

      Lol. Now it’s winter!

  33. Sandy in Gobles says:

WOW! VERY heavy snowfall in Gobles, probably 2″ an hour with HUGE flakes falling. BEAUTIFUL!!!!! I’d guess oh, about 1/8 mile visibility out here, and maybe 3 – 4″ new snow on the ground already!!! BEAUTIFUL!!

    1. tinainvbcounty says:

Will you be participating UN the snowman festival in Gobles? Lots of snow, but not good for rolling of snow balls….our turned out more vertical and less manlike as beast like! ;)

  34. Brenda (Otsego) says:

Steady snow falling, winds picking up with some whiteouts developing. Gonna bundle up, head out and walk the dogs, as cabin fever is setting in!

  35. SlimJim NW GR (1) says:

Getting very light snow here now and the temp has shot all the way up to 23° Here in Walker I have recorded just under 1″ of new snow and there is 12″ on the ground here. But it should be noted that the rat did not see his shadow yesterday so spring will be just down the street and around the corner. Of course if you believe that I have some nice palm tree lined beach property on Lake Michigan to sell you Of course the palm tress are not real and hey I do not really own the land either but if the price is right….

  36. JT says:

Measured the current amount snow on the deck and it was just under 20″ in Jenison/Hudsonville area. Got around 2 to 3 inches of new snowfall since this morning. Seems to be letting up a bit but the winds have started to pick up on and off. Hope the next clipper will bring more good amounts of snow for our area.

  38. Sparty says:

Question – at what point do any of you become concerned with snow on the roof? Lived in W. Michigan now for 13 years and haven’t really thought about it. Bought a snow rake a few years ago and never really used it. House was built in 2001.

  39. Wayland Lake Effect Lover says:

I’m confused. Between the discussion in this blog and all the links, and even Laura’s forecast on the main webpage, they’re all different! I live in Wayland in Allegan County. It’s snowing pretty nicely. We were issued a LE Snow Advisory thru 1pm tomorrow. So, what are we really looking at? Help!?!

    1. Barry in Zeeland says:

They always have several different forecasts, depending on where you look or when you watch. That way, no matter what might happen, all the bases are covered, so to speak. If you have 3 different forecasts for snow, light snow, and no snow, one of them is going to be right. Same with the longer range models. One will have cooler, one will have warmer, and one will have average. Again, one will be correct.

      1. Wayland Lake Effect Lover says:

    2. Cort S. says:

We have had a parade of clipper systems marching through lately, so snow events have a tendency to get mushed together in the discussion. Each time a clipper passes through, it kicks up the lake effect for a while, then it diminishes wholly or partially before the next system. The lake-effect snow advisory has been extended to Monday at 7 pm now. A system is going to pass through the southern part of the state tonight, but LES will still be with the lakeshore counties tonight and into tomorrow. Accumulations look light to moderate for most areas, certainly not as heavy as Saturday morning.

You can get a point-and-click forecast for your area from the NWS here:

      1. Wayland Lake Effect Lover says:

Wow! Thanks, that’s cool. Except it’s already wrong for Wayland anyway for snow for today. Ugh. I guess I’ll just go with whatever falls, falls. :)
