Saturday Sun – Rain Sunday PM
Low temps. Sat. AM: +1 G.R., Holland, Hastings, Ionia. Zero in Lansing. +6 Kalamazoo, +13 Benton Harbor, -11 Lake City, -18 in Atlanta (N. Lower MI). 34″ of snow on the ground in Charlevoix, 33″ in Grand Marais, 15″ in Muskegon, 8″ in G.R. A few snow totals of 30-35″ with the East Coast Storm that has buried Boston. (Big Rapids temperature dropped 9 degrees in 20 minutes this evening…clear skies, fresh snow, the wind goes calm and down she goes!) Looks like a great Saturday for winter sports. It’ll be chilly to start the day with lows from zero to +5 in most areas. Under partly to mostly sunny skies, we’ll be in the mid-upper 20s in the afternoon with light winds. Clouds are back for Sunday with winds increasing late in the day and rain developing during the afternoon. With the temperature right about at the freezing point (32) and the ground being cold, It’s not out of the realm of possibility that there could be a brief period of icing/freezing rain. Temperatures will rise to near 40 Sunday night. Monday will be windy (gusts to 35-40 mph) and cooler, with temperatures falling below freezing by evening. A few rain showers at daybreak Monday will change to snow showers for Monday into early Tuesday with some slick spots and light accumulations (maybe a inch). It looks partly cloudy from Tues. PM to Thursday with either snow or a mix for Thurs. night into Friday of next week.
Overnight model data: European: Rain starts Sunday aftn. – too warm for freezing rain…around 1/2″ of rain – high of 41 around 1 AM…rain to snow midday Monday with at least an inch accum…dry Wed. and Thu. probably snow (chance mix) on Fri. – if all snow then 2-3″. Bigger snowstorms go NW of us thru the Dakotas and again into the Eastern U.S. NAM has all rain (starting at 33 deg.) around 2 PM Sunday and 0.35″ then an inch of snow Monday PM/evening. GFS also goes to 41 Sunday night. It has 0.40″ rain then 1-2″ of snow Monday PM/Night with slick roads developing Monday evening. Then flurries Fri. and Sat. of next week. The rest of Feb. looks slightly cooler than average on the European weeklies. With a -6.7 deg. start for the first 8 days of a 28-day month, it’ll be very hard to turn this month to the plus side.
Hey check out the great pictures at ReportIt. (picture here is courtesy of Pando)
It does look like a cold night tonight across the state.
Getting some clouds here now so will have to wait untill he clouds break up to see how cold it gets over here.

Check this out! On the visible satellite you can see a line of ice drifting away from the shore! http://climate.cod.edu/flanis/satellite/1km/index.php?type=Michigan-vis-24
Very INTERESTING…. Thanks Charles !!

Bring on spring billy bob!
sorry fixxy mixxy
Sorry what? You know spring is close right?
Watch and wait buddy. 2-3 more snow storms and we can have spring and severe storms.
No offense but that sounds more like wishful thinking to me.
I agree fixxx… Wishful thinking for sure.
Ok! I thought I would never say this, but I wouldn’t mind a little more snow, better yet lots of rain. We need to get these lake water levels up where they belong come springtime.
Im not wishing for snow or a rainy spring just to raise the lake levels.
Then what would make you happy as well as helping the lake levels. Because we do need a lot of precip to get them there.
Well well good mornin all my little weather hobos. Snowed like crazy yesterday in the back woods. The ol tin roofs still holdin! Your ol aunty just brought in some fresh eggs. I think your ol uncky sparks is gonna mix up a bloody and watch your ol aunty fry some back bacon and eggs !Then while or ol aunty Edna shoveling I think I’ll have another bloody! The old caprice is buried! Then when your ol aunty is fetching the wood, I think I’ll mix me another bloody! Get this mi winter day started right!
Did you guys check out the Blizzard/Snow Storm, NEMO? The videos from over there are incredible and this storm hasn’t even completely wound up YET!
Those areas will be digging out for days if they get 3 feet of snow. I want to see what the snow totals will be over there!
Meanwhile, back here we could use additional snow fall to increase the snow pack. We will loss a bit of it on Sunday with the rain. We need to get the Lake Michigan water level back up!
While I’m all for anything that brings up the water levels – I’m scared the next couple of warm/windy/rainy days might steal ALL our snow. Which would make me sad, for starters, but Gun Lake’s Winterfest is next weekend and we REALLY need snow for THAT!
lose not loss.
GR 42 almost 43 inches of snow for the season. Any takers on if we could push 60 inches or more this season? We only have about 40 days to go until the official start to Spring. Take note of how much snow we have received in the last 2 weeks!
Only another 18″ to go. I’ll take that bet.
I got some awesome video from my GoPro camera during our ride around the Martin area today. And although the sun does look beautiful with the fresh snow, it actually makes it tough on our snowmobiles. Look at these awesome pics of the snowy trees, and perfect trail conditions!

GORGEOUS! THAT is why I ride – I love getting back into the woods.
Travis – I saw a trail marker: what section were you riding that was so “woodsy”? Most of the Gun Lake Trails that I’ve followed so far, are big open fields.
Nothing more than a generic, standard, run of the mill Michigan winter once again. As was mentioned earlier in the year, those of us old enough to know better, knew very well that last year was a once in a generation winter.
The Global?…Climate?…Warming?…Change? “noise” must be admiring their new normal. Wise eyes recognize this “new normal” as the same old, same old, around these parts.
This year wasn’t exactly “same old” (at least around here) – we had to wait a LOOOONG time to get our snow…. IMO, “normal” would have been a nice snowpack by December?
Does anyone know where the above pic was taken .? Is this BitterSweet Resort?
Thanks
If I had to guess, I’d say Pando.
It’s not Bitter Sweet because they don’t have tubing there, but I don’t know where it is.
Looks like Pando in Rockford to me.
They did have sledding at Timber Ridge…
Looks like Echo Valley.
That’s what I would have said, too.
