Hattisburg, Mississippi Tornado is an EF4February 10th, 2013 at 11:24 pm by Bill Steffen under Bill's Blog, News, Weather
A large, wedge tornado cut a path thru at least 3 counties in southern Mississippi Sunday. Today the tornado was upgraded to an EF4 with winds of 170 mph. Tornadoes and severe storms injured over 60 people in Mississippi, damaged hundreds of homes and knocked out power to over 13,000 customers. While 15 tornadoes were reported to the Storm Prediction Center as of 11 PM Sunday evening, some of these may be multiple sightings of the same tornado. The hardest hit city was Hattisburg, where the tornado hit the Univ. of S. Mississippi campus. The town of Pickford was also slammed hard by the twister. The storm heavily damaged the Oak Grove School complex. Thunderstorms also produced winds as high as 85 mph, baseball-sized hail, flash flooding and up to 4.5″ of rain. There’s good video of the tornado on YouTube here. Two National Weather Service Damage Survey Teams will be out in the morning to assess the destruction. Picture from Rynal Grant and WDAM.
