Rain Late Today, Snow & Slick Roads Tues.February 18th, 2013 at 2:42 am by Bill Steffen under Bill's Blog, Weather
This is this year’s snow fort/ice house from the Rauwerda family – southeast side of G.R. It’s still a work in progress. Their annual video is coming. Here’s their ice house video from 2009 (120,000 views on YouTube) and 2010, 2008, 2011and 2012. Warmer air has surged into Michigan. The models are all too weak with the warm surge (typical error)…it’s already 43 at 3 PM in G.R., 50 at Benton Harbor and in the low-mid 50s in NE Illinois and N. Indiana where there is no snow on the ground. Rain starts late afternoon at the Indiana border and moves north across the area this evening. Rainfall amounts should be 1/4 to 1/2 inch. Winter Weather Advisory for Tuesday for the entire area! The cold air comes in after midnight and the rain will change to snow. BIG WEATHER STORY: Flash freeze for the Tues. AM rush hour. It could be nasty…after about 1/3″ rain and melting snow first, with puddles..then temperature falls to the upper 20s and it starts snowing for the Tues. AM commute. That could make for a very slippery Tues. AM (and not much better Tues. PM.) commute. My advice…do this PM if you have the choice and stay put on Tues. Snowfall amounts: European 2-3″ for G.R. (airport) and 4-5″ for favorable lakeshore areas and with a strong west wind perhaps in as far as US 131. The NAM (caribou) has 3.1″ of snow for GRR, 4.3″ for Muskegon, 5″ for S. Haven and Holland, 5-6″ for Mason Co.and around an inch for Jackson, Lansing and St. Johns. The GFS Caribou has 2.3″ for G.R. (airport), but up to 7″ for Mason Co. The models have temperatures falling to the low 20s Tuesday with a 20-25 mph west wind (cold day with slick roads all day. It’s cold midweek. The European has lows inland of 5-10 above both Weds. and Thurs. AM. The GFS has 2.7″ for G.R. for the Friday storm, with another 4″ in Ludington. After the warm air Monday evening, the European doesn’t take us to 36 degrees again until next Sunday, so – overall a cool week. Season snowfall is up to 70.5″ in Muskegon (45.3″ in G.R. and in Kalamazoo WMU).
Also, cold dry air over Florida. At 3:53 PM Sunday, the dewpoint was just 3 at Daytona Beach! With a temperature of 54, that gave then a relative humidity of just 12%! Orlando at the same time had a temp. of 54, a dewpoint of 7 and a humidity of 15%. There were Frost Advisories for central FL this Monday AM. Overnight lows: Fort Myers 38, Daytona Beach and Sanford 31, Inverness a frosty 23.
