Snow Winding Down

February 26th, 2013 at 4:13 am by under Bill's Blog, Weather

Local   Weds. evening -  We have light snow all around us…it’s snowing lightly at the Indiana border, back to to Jackson and over to Ann Arbor and Detroit.  There’s snow along and north of U.S. 10 from Ludington east and snow west of us over Illinois and Indiana.  We’ll eventually get a little more light snow later tonight/tomorrow AM, but less than 1/2″ in most areas.  Snowfall amounts reported by the public have been anywhere from 1″ to 9″.    A RAPID bus collided with a car by GVSU – Allendale.  There were injuries reported to persons in the car.    Our parking lot here at WOOD is snow-covered and icy this morning.  Side streets, rural roads, sidewalks and parking lots are snow-covered and slick in many areas now.  We had hundreds of school closings this morning.   We’ll hold in the low 30s pretty much all night long into Weds.  morning.     Some of this will melt as it falls on the main roads with temperatures close to the freezing mark.    Dry weather and rather cool for Friday into the weekend.  It’ll be another great weekend for winter sports.   For current Michigan weather observations and wind speeds, click here. Here’s NAM model snowfall thru 84 hours, the GFS snowfall thru 120 hours and the HPC snowfall predictions. Here’s WOOD-TV Interactive Radar, looping radar. Not sure how much snow fell here in Walker but there is exactly 4″ of snow on the snow board this AM. Will have to see what the NWS at the airport comes up with as that is what will go into the record books. Its cloudy and 34° here now with some very light snow. It now looks like we will be in for a few days of calm weather with cold temps and some sunshine. So all in all looks like March will come in like a lamb…

  2. 6.4 Inches Breckenridge, All schools in Gratiot County are closed today

What do u mean by BIG schools ?? Slim most every school in Kent is closed big small and long…INDYY

        1. SlimJim NW GR (1) says:

All of the BIG city schools in Kent Count are OPEN!!!!! thats Grand Rapids,Wyoming,Kentwood,Grandville, East Grand Rapids and even most of the schools in Ottawa county are open.

Yes I guess 3 out of your 5 are big schools again most of schools are CLOSED in Kent ….INDYY!!!

      2. Rocky (Rockford) says:

Closed – Rockford (3rd largest district in the county), Kenowa Hills, Comstock Park, Caledonia, Forest Hills, Cedar Springs, etc.

        1. INDY says:

Don’t forget Northview Lowell and Grand Rapids Cristion!!INDY

        2. Rocky (Rockford) says:

          Good point!

        3. fixxxer says:

          godwin was open as usual.

  3. DF (SE Mich) says:

One hell of a storm over here!!! 0.2″ of ice and 6.8″ of heavy wet snow! Trees are bent over touching the ground in my front yard… I am fairly sure they are done for.

    1. Nathan says:

Yea, big over here too. Lots of ice and over 6 inches of snow. NWS was wrong again!

  4. DF (SE Mich) says:

This may interest some map junkies, the DTE power outage map, very cool. You can see Ann Arbor area was hammered with the storm.
    http://www.dteenergy.com/map/outage.html

  5. DF (SE Mich) says:

Oakland Travis, how did you fair???

  6. Travis (Oakland County) says:

A little disappointed but not too bad. All the maps showed more snow north, but you guys beat me, DF!

A heavy 5″ of snow here. Lots of fog. Feels warm this morning. 34 degrees, and our snow is already compacting and melting.

    1. DF (SE Mich) says:

Not bad. We definitely got nailed with ice and then snow. I got 6.8″, another spotter just south of Ann Arbor got 7″ I see. Power is out all over the place here so a little less might not be bad :)

      1. Travis (Oakland County) says:

Yeah, colleagues said AA was a war zone down there! Hate to lose trees like that.

I couldn’t believe all the schools closed. I don’t even know if there’s any open in Oakland County today. By early morning, all the major roads were plowed and just wet.

  7. Rocky (Rockford) says:

I officially declare that WSR was a smashing success! It is still snowing at a good clip in parts of Kent, Ottawa and Allegan counties! Keep the COLD and SNOW coming!!

  8. Dan says:

We received about 6 inches of wet, heavy snow. Roads, especially the side roads, are not very good! They are a bit better this am. They were horrible to travel on last night! Still snowing here. Are we supposed to get rain yet today? NWS was talking about rain in their forecast discussion. This has been an amazing Winter. It started out like there was going to be very little snow.
Then, we go through February and it snows almost everyday!! Gotta love Winter in Michigan!! One more shot a decent snow storm before Old Man Winter gives up the ghost? What do you think?

    1. Rocky (Rockford) says:

Rain? It is just the NWS up to their tricks again. We might see a little drizzle, however 95% of the time we will be seeing light SNOW and I think we be seeing 2 more SNOWSTORMS yet this WINTER!!!

  9. Rocky (Rockford) says:

Here is some more good news! We should see quite a bit of wrap around light snow over the next 24 hours! I would not be surprised if the GR area picks up another 1-2 inches of SNOW! Hey we must be in a SNOWY PATTERN! Imagine that wonders never cease :)

  10. dano (Norton Shores) says:

    36* and Light snow.
    Received 9″ at my home.

    1. Rocky (Rockford) says:

      NICE!

  11. GunLakeDeb says:

Just 3-4″ of cement (er…SNOW!) at my house. First came shoveling; then snowblowing; now taking a breather (I’m soaked!) before I fire up the ATV w/plow. It is SO beautiful out there!!!!

  12. Nathan says:

Lots of snow here, but not the biggest storm of the year. Looks like we should have been under a warning though, lots of snow and my dads work has no power! I think it was bigger on the west side and weaker on the east side of the state than expected. I have been hearing several reports of 6-8 inches in my area, thats warning criteria if you ask me. Plus, the ice and snow is really pushing the limbs on the trees.

    1. Nathan says:

I took a series of measurements throughout my yard: (I received a nice glaze of ice on the trees before the snow btw)
I measured 6.2, 5.9, 6.4, and exactly 6 on my car. So not nearly as much as the 12 inch storm from earlier in the month, but still pretty decent!

      1. Nathan (Forest Hills) says:

Totals may be high from the snow that was already on these surfaces, so I might take off a half inch or so. Probably around 5.5 here

    2. Cort S. says:

Yeah, this system was a real pain for everyone to forecast. If you got stuck under a few mesoscale bursts of heavy snow, you reached warning criteria. If you didn’t, you were happily at advisory criteria (some places might have even squeaked by with less than advisory criteria). The radar’s appearance showed snow intensity the whole night ranged from nothing to heavy across the area, in a chaotic and ever-changing fashion. It was not one of those snowfalls that had a nice smooth transition zone from light to heavy accumulations, it was more spotty; snowfall amounts appear to be varied dramatically 15-25 miles in any direction. But parts of GR and Mkg ended up being the real winners here.

  13. Toni says:

Where can I find out snowfall total for February in downtown GR?

    1. Bill Steffen says:

The airport is at 32.8″ for the month. I don’t have a monthly total here at WOOD (we ought to do that), but we’ve probably had a touch more than the airport. I’d say 35″ would be very close.

  14. ~Sherry~(Comstock Park) says:

It is a beautiful morning out there everyone!! A good day to get the camera out and the snow blower too!!

  15. Rocky (Rockford) says:

Get ready people – the warp around snow is moving in. It will be with us for about 24 to 30 hours! I love it!

  16. big Daddy BC says:

    http://www.climatecentral.org/news/winters-are-warming-all-across-the-us-15590

“An analysis of data from the U.S. Historical Climatology Network of weather stations shows that the coldest states are warming the fastest, and across the country winter warming since 1970 has been more than four-and-a-half times faster per decade than over the past 100 years. Winter nights across the country have warmed about 30 percent faster than nights over the whole year. Some states cooled or failed to join the warming trend over the past 100 years, but since 1970, every state has shown winter-warming.”

    1. chuckd says:

      Keep drinking the Kool-aid.

      1. big Daddy BC says:

I wonder if you know what that expression means.

        1. chuckd says:

Sure do: “Drinking the Kool-Aid” is a metaphor commonly used in the United States that refers to a person or group holding an unquestioned belief, argument, or philosophy without critical examination.

        2. Bill Steffen says:

BigD – LOL! your graph is nonsense! This is a classic example of starting a graph at the point that would fool people into the conclusion that you want to project. Why start at 1970? The 1970s were the coldest decade in at least the last 120 years. Look at the graphs here: http://blogs.woodtv.com/2011/01/25/january-temp-by-decade/ You see how the lowest point was the 1970s. Now, we’ve come back to average…the same January temperatures we had 100 years ago. You see how starting the graph at different points can give you a different impression. BigDaddy and his fellow climate profiteers and climate deceivers are trying to fool you…to get you to accept “skyrocketing” utility rates and “$9 a gallon gasoline” prices. They want to throw the money into the general fund to enrich cronies (see here: http://www.woodtv.com/dpp/news/target_8/Volt-no-jolt-LG-Chem-employees-idle and http://articles.chicagotribune.com/2011-09-18/news/ct-met-kass-0918-20110918_1_solyndra-loan-guarantee-obama-fundraisers-obama-white-house) “Skyrocketing” utility rates and $9 a gallon gasoline will hurt the poor…the middle class…the elderly…the disabled…minorities…those on fixed income…and children. This is money that could used to put food into the mouths of hungry children. Don’t let them take your hard-earned money.

Just keep in mind how they construct these graphs to fool you and don’t be fooled. Don’t let a special-interest shill and his repressive, regressive friends conspire to force unreasonable utility rates and job-killing energy prices on the poor and middle class.

…and BDBC just loves his gov’t surplus KOOL-AID!! Even prefers the BIG gov’t model/approach a la DETROIT– you know; huge unions, tons of public assistance, heavy on bureaurocracy, etc…just look how much better they are doing than say a heavy private enterprise sector like GR…w/ tons of privatized(voluntary vs gov’t MANDATED)donations, community service projects.Yet BDBC would prefer the entire U.S look MORE like DET, & LESS like the evil, greedy, free-market, private enterprise- business oriented city of GR!
He trusts the likes of Obama, who PROMISED (on multiple occasions, no less) that Affordable Care Act would NOT add a single DIME(to deficit/debt)!!Ok, looks like he was half-right as it won’t add just a single dime, but rather $60.2 TRILLION dimes! Trust? What happened to his support of “DOMA” , only to turn against it….more trust issues? oh heck yeah- how about “transparency”(where was that for “Fast and Furious”, college transcripts, C-SPAN events, etc), not to mention he “says” he supports a “balanced approach”/”compromise” , but then will only entertain proposals that 1) RAISE taxes 2) INCREASE overall budget SPENDING + DEBT!<If that is "balanced", i'd love to see the scale of justice he's been using all these years!!
The who's who list of supporters for Obama just keeps on growing (almost as much as his nose)….add ILLEGAL's, ALL Communists/Marxists/Socialists, criminals, drug dealers, arms to Mexico dealers, and perhaps the most important, if not infamous, pat-on-the back comes from the HOT man himself- SATAN!Who gets a chill/tingle up his leg/horns every time he hears Obama ramble on about supporting partial-birth death chambers of horror…;(

        4. big Daddy BC says:

More rabid anti Obama rhetoric. You owe the man a thank you for digging us out from under six years of GOP control.

An article from Watts Up? It’s hilarious how the denier group has no scientific support so they use an uneducated blogmasters opinion for support. That’s like using Bill Steffen Limbaugh as a climatology expert. LOL

        1. Bill Steffen says:

I’ve got NASA: http://data.giss.nasa.gov/gistemp/graphs_v3/Fig.C.gif (global temperatures flat over the past decade)

Even “Handcuffs” Hansen has been forced to admit that he was wrong about soaring temperatures over the past decade:

“The five-year mean global temperature has been flat for the last decade…” – James Hansen et al.

NOAA meteorologists and climatologists continue to debunk the politicians, the climate profiteers and (in this case) the special interest shills who want to force “skyrocketing” utility rates and $9 a gallon European level gasoline prices on the poor and the middle class: http://www.foxnews.com/science/2012/10/31/scientists-dispute-politicians-claims-that-global-warming-grew-sandy/

        2. Bill Steffen says:

I took the time to watch the video at the link you gave, bigD. First “TED” loses all credibility by opening with a picture of Al Gore, who is stuffing tens of millions of oil dollars into his wallet now as a consultant for Qatar/Al Jazeera. He’s the guy who screamed about rising sea levels, then bought oceanfront property. He’s the guy who’s house used 20 times the electricity of the houses in his rich neighborhood and he’s the guy who had a chauffeured-driven Suburban drive him less than a block.

Second, the speech by Granholm is breathtakingly full of my initials. Sure, she offered Electrolux no taxes and offered to build them a factory! They were UAW! The UAW pumps millions into the Democratic Party. If you’re not doing that, you get nothing! Note that we “saved” Chrysler with tens of millions of taxpayer dollars, but did nothing for Circuit City.

Granholm says she wants Michigan to be the leader in lithium batteries! How’s that working out: http://www.woodtv.com/dpp/news/target_8/Volt-no-jolt-LG-Chem-employees-idle LOL

She said while she was in China, some Chinese official berated her because China had an energy policy and the U.S. didn’t. Have you seen China’s energy policy? http://behindthewall.nbcnews.com/_news/2013/02/28/17130220-sandstorm-pushes-beijing-pollution-levels-off-the-charts?lite China is now far ahead of the U.S. in CO2 emissions. Solar Energy? Really? In Michigan? We just had 18% of possible sunshine in Feb. 2013, with an average day of 10 hours. How has the Federal government been doing with solar? Read this: http://articles.chicagotribune.com/2011-09-18/news/ct-met-kass-0918-20110918_1_solyndra-loan-guarantee-obama-fundraisers-obama-white-house It’s one FAIL after another: http://blog.heritage.org/2012/10/18/president-obamas-taxpayer-backed-green-energy-failures/ Some politically-connected group, friendly to the regime gets a boatload of taxpayer money…sets up shop for awhile, paying themselves big bucks…then when the money runs out they declare bankruptcy and do it again…wash, rinse, repeat!

You want an energy policy. BUILD THE KEYSTONE PIPELINE!! It’ll create thousands of good jobs. The oil will be burned cleanly in the U.S. or in a far more polluting fashion in China. It’s better for the environment for the U.S. to get the oil!

People are getting wise to your globaloney: http://www.independent.co.uk/environment/climate-change/green-fatigue-sets-in-the-world-cools-on-global-warming-8513826.html

Say NO to “skyrocketing” energy costs! Say NO to “$9 a gallon European-level gasoline prices. Say NO to climate profiteers! Say YES to the Keystone Pipeline!

    3. Bill Steffen says:

That’s really funny, bigD – so…they’ve discovered winters are warmer than in the 1970s. The 1970s were the coldest winters of the last 150 years in the U.S. Look at the graphs here: http://blogs.woodtv.com/2011/01/25/january-temp-by-decade/ So, it’s not surprising that it warmed back up to average!

That’s like looking at the height of 4-year olds and then looking at the height of the same kids 40 years later and saying “WHOA – look at this! They’re all 6 feet tall! Quick!! We need a big tax increase on the poor and middle class! Make those utility rates “skyrocket” and push gasoline up to $9 a gallon!!!!” Put the money in the general fund so we can enrich our crony friends thru boondoggles like Solynda: http://articles.chicagotribune.com/2011-09-18/news/ct-met-kass-0918-20110918_1_solyndra-loan-guarantee-obama-fundraisers-obama-white-house and LG Chem: http://www.woodtv.com/dpp/news/target_8/Volt-no-jolt-LG-Chem-employees-idle Sorry, little man – I’m on the side of the poor and middle class. I want reasonably priced gasoline and utility rates.

The graphic goes back to 1912. Look again, Old Timer.

        3. Bill Steffen says:

The main graph at your link starts at 1970. I’d have to look at their data. So many of these climate profiteering groups find a way to lower past temperatures and raise current temperatures. I’ve looked at data from weather stations that have been at the same place with little urbanization and they show very little if any change in the last 100 years. Look very carefully at this graph done by the State Climatologist of California: http://www.investigatemagazine.co.nz/Investigate/wp-content/uploads/2012/03/goodridge_1996_ca-uhi_county.jpg

Here in G.R., the coldest warmest winters were 1932 and 1890. The coldest winters were 1904 and 1977.

  17. michael g (SE GR) says:

6″ of heavy wet snow here. NEED to fix my snowblower.

  18. Dan says:

Big Daddy! What a surprise! Where have you been? You do realize that what you speak of should involve the entire world? Shattered records in cold and snowfall are interesting, huh? Also, there was some documentation about a snowstorm in Hawaii just about a week ago! Point is, you accuse Bill of cherry picking the data.
Are you doing the same thing? By the way, locally we are on way to approaching 70 inches of snow fall for this season. Winter is not done, just yet! I think, there is some confidence placed in the data from the CPC that we will probably not hit the 80s, this March.

    1. Mark (East Lansing) says:

      +1

      1. big Daddy BC says:

How stupid do you have to be to +1 Dan. LOL

Hey Dan, I bet Bill we’d have above average precip and warmer than normal temps. Think I’m gonna win, Slick? I do…and for the second winter in a row.

I’m not sure how linking an article about much warmer our winters have gotten is cherry picking, but okay. Or are you claiming that global warming is a unique North American experience. You saw what happened in Australia this January. You saw what happened in the Arctic last summer. You saw what happened in Russia in 2010. Spike, spike, spike.

        1. Mark (East Lansing) says:

          -1

OMG! Two winters in a row?? Repent! Repent, I say!! The end is nigh!!!

Someone didn’t get enough hugs when he was a boy. What say you, Little Mama?

        2. Dan says:

How stupid do you have to be, Big Daddy? That is evidently the way to have this conversation. I’m not making it up! LOOK at your posts! You reference a couple of warmer than average temps and that makes it a done deal? You’ll believe all the B.S. that some will shovel you!! Quick, Big Daddy! You had better prepare yourself for what is coming next!!
Oh no the sky is falling!!! I hope you are prepared for this Big Daddy. Are you ready or would you rather call people names because they don’t agree with you? You got me Big Daddy. Oh My! It is really quite remarkable how you continually get slammed by an overbundance of data! They may ask to do something else, are you ready for it?
QUICK, QUICK Big Daddy, get prepared!

        3. Bill Steffen says:

Russian heat wave NOT caused by “global warming”: http://green.blogs.nytimes.com/2011/03/09/natural-causes-drove-russian-heat-wave-study-finds/ (from the New York Times!)

Now, look at this: http://publicpost.ru/theme/id/3284/oymyakon/ In English: ” Oymyakon: Coldest Town in the World –71 ° Celsius

It was just a few days ago that Oymyakon became famous. With -71° Celsius, it recorded a new record cold temperature, which until then had been unique to 2 villages. Until then the record of -68°C had to be shared with the town of Werchojansk – however, this is now history.”

If verified, this would be the coldest temperature ever recorded in the Northern Hemisphere.

Oymyakon is 5 degrees colder than average for this month and it’s twin Siberian town, Verkoyansk is 8 degrees colder than average for the month.

Arctic ice has a greater extent than on any Feb. 27 over the past 7 years: http://arctic-roos.org/observations/satellite-data/sea-ice/observation_images/ssmi1_ice_ext.png

Antarctic ice remains at a record extent: http://nsidc.org/data/seaice_index/images/daily_images/S_timeseries.png (could be the earliest data ever that Antarctic ice reached the annual minimum!).

        4. big Daddy BC says:

So because it cold somewhere, climate change isn’t occurring. Maybe I’m out there, but wouldn’t a record low also be climate change?? LOL

Here’s what actual scientists think about declining ice:
          http://ossfoundation.us/projects/environment/global-warming/antarctic-ice-melt

Here’s a great time lapse video of the melting glaciers. No one cares about sea ice, Magoo. It’s the melting land ice that’s got scientists around the world freaking out.

        5. Bill Steffen says:

It’s cold in a LOT of places, bigD. http://models.weatherbell.com/climate/ncep_cfsr_t2m_anom_022013.png February global temperatures anomaly was 0.001C BELOW AVERAGE. Look at the last 7 years: http://models.weatherbell.com/climate/cfsr_t2m_2005.png The trend is downward.

  19. Michael (Berrien county) says:

At least 3…. going on 4 inches here. Looks like a few more on the grassy & elevated surfaces throughout the day today according to the NWS & NAM models.

    1. Nathan says:

Wow, not nearly as bad as expected

    2. Travis (Oakland County) says:

I still don’t get how AA proved to be the sweet spot! I was in the 6-8″ graphic on the local news last night, so, yes, a little less than expected for me.

  20. Michael (Berrien county) says:

Bill, I think they would have thrown you off the air if you had given a forecast for snow with 1-10 inches of total accumulation yesterday…. but that seems to be the case all throughout west/southwest Michigan with this storm. :-)

    1. big Daddy BC says:

Don’t stations generally appreciate it when their employees get the forecast correct?

      1. Bill Steffen says:

The stations like their media operations to make money. 24-Hour News 8 is the #1 most watched news in state outside of Detroit. woodtv.com is now getting more hits than M-Live. Bill’s Blog is nearly 10% of the hits on http://www.woodtv.com I’ve attracted you. You come here every day (multiple times, esp. when school gets cancelled – too bad – you need to be there for the students to teach you something worthwhile!).

If I were a member of the MEA – I’d generally not appreciate the fact that so many of my dues dollars went to promoting proposals that were so demolished at the polls last November. What a waste of money. Can you believe that over 700,000 people who voted for Obama voted against screwing with the State Constitution to benefit the union bosses and the thugs that destroyed the catering equipment of poor Clint Tarver: http://dailycaller.com/2012/12/13/clint-tarver-lansings-hot-dog-guy-describes-union-goons-destroying-his-property-and-calling-him-racial-epithets/ It’s a shame, gives the unions a bad name, resorting to racial epithets is lame…all you do is defame and inflame…you need a new game, big D.

        1. Irish coffee says:

Just remember Bill BDBC doesn’t believe that union dues from teachers makes it’s way into LIBERAL DEM coffers! He says they are “audited” …SO that must mean they play by ALL the rules and never sneak, manipulate, or funnel money through the back door , righ?LOL Just like when that district on eastside encouraged all the teachers to play “hooky” (call-in sick)in order to protest @ RTW protest in E. Lansing…screw the kids/classroom and rules be dammed(see: 112 if i’m not mistaken)Union rep/teacher even just received an AWARD for their guts in orchestrating said protest rally!!! Taylor school district?

        2. big Daddy BC says:

It’s illegal, Dumb Ass. If the MEA, Teamsters, Plumbers Assoc., UAW, Nurses Union, or any other group uses union dues to financially support politicians it’s AGAINST THE LAW. They deserve to be prosecuted for doing so. Make some sense once in while, Wack Job!

        3. Bill Steffen says:

You know who else deserves to be prosecuted…the union thugs who destroyed the catering equipment of Clint Tarver: http://www.mlive.com/lansing-news/index.ssf/2012/12/lansing_business_owner_alleges.html The union-thug racists shouted racial epithets at him. Check this out: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hBQ6dKPu0pk

      2. big Daddy BC says:

I sure love trolling on here. You right-wing, deniers sure do foam at the mouth over unions and climate change. Thanks for continually reminding us how far right this station and crowd leans. I love it
You’ve got a nice stronghold in the western part of this state, but you certainly aren’t the majority.

Things I like most about your arguments:

Devoid of Science (Baring Cherry Picked Data)
Rife with Politically Charged Language (Talking Points Straight from FOX NEWS)
        Full of Limbaughesque Character Attacks
        Pompous and Self Important
Hypocritical (On so many levels. As an aside, I love that you support a governor that continually raises taxes on the middle class while simultaneously accusing democrats of wanting to do the same thing!)

        Have a Look at This!

        http://www.ted.com/talks/jennifer_granholm_a_clean_energy_proposal_race_to_the_top.html

        1. Bill Steffen says:

I watched the video at the link you gave, bigD.

Grandholm says she wants Michigan to be the leader in lithium batteries!

CO2 emissions in the U.S. are FALLING: http://content.usatoday.com/communities/ondeadline/post/2012/08/in-a-surprise-co2-emissions-hit-20-year-low/1

        2. big Daddy BC says:

I already told you that Vice President Gore is but one speaker of thousands, both republican and democrat that has presented at TED. Way to focus in on the irrelevant. Governor Granholm’s idea has lots of merit. If a republican suggested it, you’d love it. She never said put up solar panels in Michigan. She put up a map that had photovoltaics in the southwest sunbelt. She suggested Michigan for wind farms and battery production. YOUR suggestion is another pipeline to drive an energy revolution. Perhaps two years ago’s dumping of a million gallons of crude into the Kalamazoo River wasn’t evidence enough that these companies don’t use enough safeguards to protect our water supply. They didn’t even have a way to shut the thing off after it ruptured. So now you want another? That’s quite a revolution, Bill. Rebel.

        3. Bill Steffen says:

Al Gore is your idol! Governor Granholm’s idea is a total FAIL: She mentioned sinking more money in lithium batteries. We did that…151 Million Dollars pumped into LG Chem. Look what happened: http://www.woodtv.com/dpp/news/target_8/Volt-no-jolt-LG-Chem-employees-idle NOT A SINGLE BATTERY!! NOT ONE!! No accountability! We could have given scholarships to every engineering student at GVSU with that kind of money.

Granholm cited solar energy. I’m not against that, I have solar panels on my house and was one of the first to get them in W. Michigan. However, we had 18% of possible sunshine in February. When it’s cold and you need the energy, it’s not there. Look the money we’ve wasted there:
http://articles.chicagotribune.com/2011-09-18/news/ct-met-kass-0918-20110918_1_solyndra-loan-guarantee-obama-fundraisers-obama-white-house and http://blog.heritage.org/2012/10/18/president-obamas-taxpayer-backed-green-energy-failures/ Granholm wants to repeat the waste. When she left office, the state had a massive deficit. Snyder (a CPA) not only made a reasonable budget (something Harry Reid is by law required to do, but hasn’t), but has given us a surplus. With the help of a lot of Democrats and union members, he defeated the onerous Proposal 2 that would have protected drunk and drug-dealing teachers in the Bay City District:

From Mlive: “The Bay City Public Schools teachers contract would allow teachers to come to school under the influence of alcohol five times before being fired, three strikes under the influence of drugs and two if teachers are caught selling drugs. The language has been in the contract since 1997.”

  21. Cort S. says:

List of snowfall reports, by county:
    http://forecast.weather.gov/product.php?site=grr&product=pns&issuedby=GRR&format=CI&version=1&glossary=0
Look at how much those numbers vary within the same county! Not an easy system at all, the real heavy snow and the real light snow was hit and miss. The average across the whole area seems to be about 4-5 inches.

    1. DF (SE Mich) says:

Yeah it is nuts, same over here. These are all trained spotter reports as well.

      1. Nathan says:

Looks pretty accurate. Im near the East GR and Airport area and picked up around 6 inches.

    2. Rocky (Rockford) says:

Are these storm totals or since midnight! If these are storm totals they are 100% inaccurate! What a joke – these totals are no where near reality! I live in Rockford and I picked up 6.75 to 7 inches of new SNOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

      1. Rocky (Rockford) says:

If these are actually official reports I will never believe the official reports again! Just take a look at the NWS wrap up map – at least this map shows the GR and Muskegon area consistently picking up 6 to 8 inches of SNOW!

        1. Cort S. says:

          1. These are storm totals.
          2. These are “spotter” reports. The “offical” reports come from MKG, GRR, and LAN airports. For GRR, it was 5.7 inches.
          3. No one is disputing your snowfall amount of 7 inches. Did you submit a spotter report to the NWS? It would be on this list if you did.
          4. Point is, look at the variety. This system was crazy randomfire, with snowfall amounts varying over short distances. You were one of the lucky ones with more than 6 inches.

        2. Rocky (Rockford) says:

I like the numbered list. Very nice!

        3. Allendale says:

From seeing reports on the blog and what you posted…I would not consider 6 inches or more “lucky”…more like common. To many of those numbers to be considered lucky.

        4. Cort S. says:

It seems like 6+ inches was common in a few parts of Kent County, stretching down I-96 toward Muskegon. A few other spots in West Michigan got 6+ inches, but the Grand Rapids-Muskegon corridor seems to be where it was most common. Compared to what most other people got in western, central, and eastern Lower Michigan, you can consider yourself lucky to have received 6+. You could also consider yourself lucky if you consider the other random spots in your county got closer to 4 or less. Again, pretty chaotic results from this system. I like Michael (Berrien county)’s observation in an earlier post that said Bill could have predicted 1-10″ and gotten away with it.

        5. fixxxer says:

i don’t know how you guys can take rj seriously.

  22. Red in Allegan Co. says:

It looks like I have a good 6″ on my deck. Haven’t been out to plow yet but it is pretty close to 6. Last night, around 9:15, I took a peek outside and it reminded me of Monty Python. We have three sizes, “wee”, “not so wee”, and “Friggin’ HUGE!” And that is exactly what those snow flakes were. They looked like giant, white quarters blowing around out there. And then my daughter called while travelling down I-75 last night right around the same time I looked outside. She said it was doing the same thing over there and the absolute top speed on the highway was 35. She couldn’t see the lines in the road or anything else for that matter. And before anyone chews me out, she uses hands free bluetooth in her car.

  23. fixxxer says:

i think the schools should of stayed open like wyoming. the roads are 100% clear. it’s the side streets that are crappy.

    1. Tim (Spring Lake) says:

Many schools send their busses down side streets, especially in the suburbs. To do that today would have been a disaster. My daughter had school, and I brought her rather than having her take the bus. A good choice, seeing as how I saw her bus stuck in the snow 5 minutes after I dropped her off.

  24. Allendale says:

Have 7 inches in Allendale on my driveway before starting to shovel this cement.

    1. GunLakeDeb says:

Yikes! That’s heavy snow – I’m glad I only had to fight with 3 to 4 inches’ worth….. it was a 4 hour job clearing the car lot this morning :-(

      1. GunLakeDeb says:

Oh – and it’s not showing up on radar, but I’m getting very light drizzle.

  25. Kevin(Rockford) says:

haha…lovin the new snow blower…need moar snow to challenge it!

    1. Rocky (Rockford) says:

Don’t worry you will have at least two more SNOWSTORMS to use your new snow blower. Keep it gassed up!

  26. fixxxer says:

seems the east side of the state got hit harder than us thankfully. the month of march as of now looks like more crap.

    1. Rocky (Rockford) says:

Looks like a lot more COLD and SNOW! Keep it rolling!

      1. fixxxer says:

sure rj, im sure you would love it if it snowed right through may as well? please go back to pinerest.

      2. michigan won says:

Hey Rocky…. Your obviously home from school today. Go outside and play in the snow before it all melts.

        1. Nathan says:

Yea, Im surprised school closed. Fine with me LOL!

        2. fixxxer says:

          Lol.

  27. Katie in Kentwood says:

GR 1.9 inches?? That is completely wrong. I have least 4 inches of new snow here. Where are they measuring from?

    1. Rob( Norton Shores) says:

Muskegon 1.9 from midnight to 9AM noooo! I measured just under 8in and had a really hard time plowing. I live right next to the airport.

      1. Matt (Spring Lake) says:

I don’t understand why on earth Bill would just post since midnight amounts.

Why not complete storm totals? It’s true…the local meteorologists dropped the ball on this one. Almost all places have gotten more than the “1 to 4 inches” and “2 to 5 inches” called for.

        1. Cort S. says:

2-5 was a decent prediction for many people, but our earlier guesses of 4-6 would have been better. Even that would not have been enough though. Really should have been 3-7… with a lot of low-ends and a lot of high-ends.

        2. Katie in Kentwood says:

Right. What about from 3pm-midnight yesterday? Thats when we got most of the snow!

    2. Cort S. says:

Grand Rapids (airport/NWS) had 4.1 inches of snow yesterday through midnight (4-tenths shy of a Feb 26 record), then 1.6 inches after midnight, making for a storm total of 5.7 inches.

Muskegon (airport) had 4.9 inches yesterday through midnight, then 1.9 inches after midnight.

  28. Barry in Zeeland says:

I’d say we almost made 3 inches, but it’s once again up to almost 40 outside. Since we’ve lost about 4 inches from the rain and thawing, I guess we have a net total of minus 1 inch. Not to often that happens.

    1. Travis Ulberg (West of Martin, Allegan County) says:

40? If you call 35 almost 40, then yeah it’s almost 40 today.

      1. Barry in Zeeland says:

Hit 39 here. 39.3 to be exact. I would say 0.7 from 40 is pretty dang close. Holland airport was 38 a while ago.

  29. SlimJim NW GR (1) says:

As I stated earlier I am not sure how much snow “fell” and how much melted before I took the measurement, But here in Walker I had 4″ of very wet snow. So based on the wetness I would say if it was colder we would have had a good 8″ or more. As for some places having more snow on the ground (or where ever one measured it) some may have depended on elevation or anything else that could have caused a difference of a degree or two. Its now 37° and clouldy.
    SlimJim

    1. Cort S. says:

The NWS Chicago mentioned they had an observer that measured a 7:1 snow-liquid ratio.

      1. GunLakeDeb says:

Yeah – this is REALLY wet, dense snow and I wonder how much compressed as more was added on top? And I agree with Barry – the way it’s melting now, and what we lost on Monday – I’m not sure we really “gained” any snow around here other than to cover the bald spots…. and with the higher angle of the sun – those will melt off fast, too.

        1. Cort S. says:

Oh well, I guess we are nearing the end of winter after all. At least this system was another shot of Gulf moisture instead of lake effect. That’ll help out our lakes, rivers, and Great Lakes a little bit more.

We’re above-normal for precipitation so far in 2013.
          http://www.crh.noaa.gov/images/grr/climate/plots/KGRRytd.png
That’s good, because we have a lot of work to do to erase the deficit that 2012 left us:
          http://www.crh.noaa.gov/Image/grr/climate/plots/KGRR2012plot.png

        2. DF (SE Mich) says:

If you want talk about evening out then you have to bring in 2011 also =)
          http://www.crh.noaa.gov/Image/grr/climate/plots/KGRR2011plot.png

          Why we have averages.

  30. SlimJim NW GR (1) says:

At least the first half of March looks cold, but the first week could be dry with the systems going to our south and east. You know it very well could turn out that March 2013 could be below average. Any takers on that idea??? And yes it also could be snowier then average as well.
    SlimJim

    1. suehelen says:

I’ll take below average precip please!

    2. Barry in Zeeland says:

I’m happy right around 40. Anything warmer and it gets way to hot at work. Last year hitting 85-90 in March was bad enough. We never had time to somewhat adapt to the heat. I’ve been working in shorts since Feb of 2011, the last time we really had any sustained cold air. So I guess a cooler than average March sounds good to me, cuz that means it will be right around 40 all month.

      1. fixxxer says:

        Your in the minority barry.

        1. Brian(Grandville) says:

          Then so am I.

        2. fixxxer says:

          as i said “the minority”.

        3. GunLakeDeb says:

Add ME to the 40-degrees is awesome/no mosquitoes/no sweating/no sunblock lotion needed group!

  31. Jim S.(Saugatuck Twp) says:

Pretty good warm up 10 days out on the European model. We’ll see.

    1. Travis (Oakland County) says:

Some 30′s, some 50′s, and lots of inbetween. Get ready for the wild March swings!

      1. DF (SE Mich) says:

Agreed. The average high goes up about 15° through the course of March.

        1. Travis (Oakland County) says:

Check out the upcoming 30-day rollercoaster:

          http://www.weathertrends360.com/Graph/30day/ST3585/20130227000000

      2. SBPortage002 says:

March is our transition month for sure. Hopefully a more normal March temp wise and I think that is what it will be with swings up and down.

        1. fixxxer says:

          So basically its gonna suck.

  32. Matt (Spring Lake) says:

Why does western Michigan seem to often get missed by wrap around precip?

    1. Travis Ulberg (West of Martin, Allegan County) says:

It’s been snowing here on the WMU campus for most of the afternoon.

      1. Matt (Spring Lake) says:

Have you gotten much more accum. today?

        1. Travis Ulberg (West of Martin, Allegan County) says:

Nope, it was more wet flakes, but since it was in the afternoon it didn’t accumulate to much at all.

    2. GunLakeDeb says:

And it drizzled all day here at Gun Lake. It’s STILL drizzling.

  33. INDY says:

  35. Todd In Nunica says:

By far the largest (by volume and weight) snowfall of the year. There was a few areas that had 2 foot drifts of this cement. I also have a few accounts Black lake area, that the depth of the snow rubbed the underside of my truck. (close to 8″) Maybe that was where the report of 8″ was from.

I plowed 11 hrs, then had to go to west olive to take some re certification exams for my business….so needless to say last I slept was Monday night…..lol

    1. Todd In Nunica says:

Anyone know if that snow that seems to be all over to our west is going to hit us tonight? or are we about done? I would like to clean up before temps drop below freezing but if its gonna snow more ill wait till later.

      1. DF (SE Mich) says:

You will have to decide for yourself =) The snow is pretty random at the moment.

      2. Matt (Spring Lake) says:

Hey Todd. The heaviest is going off to the south. We will probably get some of that stuff over western Wisconsin whenever this thing starts to finally move east. I don’t think it will be any big deal though. You should probably clean all this slush up before it freezes!

      3. Todd In Nunica says:

yea thats what I was thinking. Sounds like I may get a whole weekend off! not sure I remember last time that happened. (was before Jan 20 thats for sure)

    Good Day,

Near Breton and 52nd… When I measured this moring the “best” I could find was a pinch over 3.75″. It was heavy stuff so I am quite certain it compacted on itself. That said… running the snowblower was more akin to running a giant slushy machine! Hehe… Most of this afternoon and early evening we have been recieving a steady mist/drizzle, with the occasional flake or two.

      2. bodawg says:

I’m pretty sure that was our last ‘storm’. I’m ok with that and I really hope I’m right.

  40. Dan says:

Yes, more snow! For all that said, less snow and warmer temps, wouldn’t it be something if we eclipsed a two month total?
Bring on the next Snow Storm! Please, 8-12 inches of snow for the next storm. Build the snow pack so that Lake can get the run off! Lets also hope we can get some decent rain this Spring! What is March set a record with snow fall? That would be AWESOME!

    1. Travis Ulberg (West of Martin, Allegan County) says:

I’m pretty sure I broke the February snowfall record for my location. I haven’t added up what I had for yesterday and today yet, but I know it’s over 50″.

  41. Travis Ulberg (West of Martin, Allegan County) says:

Well yet again, Muskegon pulled away from me with a system snow. I’m at 52.1″ for February, and 88.65″ for the winter. Hoping for 100+” by winters end.

    1. Matt (Spring Lake) says:

Woo Hoo! :) After an annoying drizzle much of the day, precip. is getting heavier and it is snow again.

  42. Nick (Grand Haven / West Olive) says:

    http://www.climatecentral.org/news/winters-are-warming-all-across-the-us-15590

“An analysis of data from the U.S. Historical Climatology Network of weather stations shows that the coldest states are warming the fastest, and across the country winter warming since 1970 has been more than four-and-a-half times faster per decade than over the past 100 years. Winter nights across the country have warmed about 30 percent faster than nights over the whole year. Some states cooled or failed to join the warming trend over the past 100 years, but since 1970, every state has shown winter-warming.”

    1. Bill Steffen says:

…BigD – your graph is nonsense! This is a classic example of starting a graph at the point that would fool people into the conclusion that you want to project. Why start the graph at 1970?

Don’t let a special-interest shill and his repressive, regressive cronies conspire to force unreasonable utility rates and job-killing energy prices on the poor and middle class.

      1. big Daddy BC says:

First of all, it’s not my graph. Secondly, the graphic shows warming since 1912. The trend obviously increases since the ’70s. The Clean Air Act eliminated so much of the aerosol blanket that was reflecting light away. Industrial aerosols had a big impact on masking the climate forcing effects of skyrocketing CO2 levels. But regardless of whether you believe in the science that says so, the trend clearly accelerates from the ’70s onward. Not coincidently, a lot of other changes begin to occur then as well. And in the last decade we’ve seen increasing warming. I realize you’ll stick up the same tired old Hansen quote about things leveling off, but NOAA just announced that the last twelve months were the hottest year in recorded history, so the leveling idea is out the window and out of date.

And you make me laugh every time you use the old skyrocketing fuel prices talking point. Fuel prices skyrocketed under GWB, not Clinton, not Obama. And secondly, you fully support our GOP legislature and Governor in their raising of the gas tax, vehicle registration increases, and taxes on services. You and your ilk are wolves in sheeps’ clothing. You’ve been taxing the hell out of the middle-class since Snyder took office! That’s job killing! That’s middle-class killing! Shame on you!

        1. Bill Steffen says:

What nonsense. I don’t support additional gas taxes. You’re the guys who want to strangle the economy – force “skyrocketing” utility rates and $9 a gallon European gasoline prices on the poor and middle class. People are wise to you climate profiteers.

Global temperatures have been flat for a decade: http://data.giss.nasa.gov/gistemp/graphs_v3/Fig.C.gif

It ain’t warmin’ profiteer: “The five-year mean global temperature has been flat for the last decade…” – James Hansen et al.

People are giving up on your alarmism:

People are seeing thru your hype and deception

        2. big Daddy BC says:

What people? The people at Exxon? Rush Limbaugh? FOX NEWS? WOOD TV? Go back and read the graph, Magoo. Winters are warming. It’s a documented fact.

          http://www.climatecentral.org/news/winters-are-warming-all-across-the-us-15590

I just can’t wait to see who wins our little bet on this winter. I said warm and wet. You said cold and dry.

Here’s a great time lapse video of the melting glaciers. No one cares about sea ice, Magoo. It’s the melting land ice that’s got scientists around the world freaking out.

          http://www.ted.com/talks/james_balog_time_lapse_proof_of_extreme_ice_loss.html

        3. big Daddy BC says:

Speaking of raising utility rates. Here’s your boy, Governor Snyder proposing that very thing!!!

          http://www.mlive.com/news/grand-rapids/index.ssf/2012/09/raising_michigan_gas_tax_and_v.html

        4. big Daddy BC says:

Snyder’s proposing 19 cents gas tax per gallon!!! That’s $5.70 in taxes he’ll take for an average fill up. Every single time you fill up, you’ll be supporting tax breaks for the 100,000 corporations he set free of all Michigan taxes. Holy Smokes! Are you kidding me, Bill? You actually support this.

He also wants to raise vehicle registration costs AND start taxing SERVICES!!! These are all taxes designed to strangle the middle class.

          http://www.annarbor.com/news/snyder-proposes-raising-gas-tax-expanding-medicaid-in-509-billion-budget/

        5. Bill Steffen says:

LOL – more utter nonsense. You’re losing ground fast, profiteer! http://www.independent.co.uk/environment/climate-change/green-fatigue-sets-in-the-world-cools-on-global-warming-8513826.html

You guys did an $800 BILLION DOLLAR “stimulus”. We’ve got NOTHING to show for it…no new schools, no new bridges…nothing…it seemed to go down a rathole and unemployment is actually higher than it was four years ago (and nothing we’re doing now is going to bring that rate down).

Say YES to the Keystone Pipeline and NO to “skyrocketing” utility rates and $9 a gallon “European Level” gasoline prices.

        6. Bill Steffen says:

Hope everyone had the chance to read this:
