60″ Snow Depth in Michigan

March 20th, 2013 at 2:02 pm by under Bill's Blog, Weather

snow 13 feet high houghton county michigan   Snow drift 13-feet high in Houghton Co. Michigan (from WLUC).   Hoist Basin reports an average snow depth of 60″ (5 feet) this (Weds.) morning!  Hoist Basin is west of Marquette.  Check out the snowman cam at Krupp’s Resort, where they just had 18.5″ of new snow in 24 hours!  Other snow depths this (Weds.) AM:  50″ Grand Marais, 45″ Atlantic Mine, 40″ Munising Airport, 39″ Marquette Airport, 29″ S. Ste. Marie and Newberry, 18″ Gaylord, 13″ Cadillac and Kalkaska, 12″ Traverse City (more east and west of TVC), 11″ Houghton Lake, 10″ Scottville, 4″ Rockford, 3″ Grand Rapids, Fremont, Grandville, 2″ Lansing, Muskegon, Ionia, Grand Ledge, Hastings, 1″ Big Rapids and Alma.  This could be the best late season (late March/early April) skiing/snowmobiling ever in Michigan!  It’ll be a little harder to find those Easter eggs in 60″ of snow!  Good luck kids!  Most of the country is feeling the chillNAO (North Atlantic Oscillation) and AO (Arctic Oscillaction) VERY negative and may only moderate closer to average in early April.  Right now, I’d say 70% chance April winds up cooler than average in the Great Lakes – for sure the first week of April.   120-Hour GFS accumulated snowfall gives  the heaviest snow to Illinois, Indiana and Ohio.     It was the 2nd coldest start to spring ever in Marquette with a high Weds. of 19.

That looks a lot more like a pile of snow than it does a drift. Drifts are smooth where I come from.

  2. Nathan says:

That’s crazy! It’s so hard to believe that it’s spring AND last year at this time it was in the eighties! I guess we deserve the chill :p

  3. bnoppe(Albion) says:

euro still shows it south, something will have to give

My guess is more south 6-10 near the boarder
    4-6 94

    3-5 96

    1 less north of 96

    1. Irish coffee says:

Wayyyyy too early to get specific……energy not even off Pacific yet. That said, i’m going 6-8″ for areas w/in 17.5 mi. of I 94;2-5″ NORTH and 8.3″-12.5″ along IN/MI border ;) ENJOY!

      1. bnoppe(Albion) says:

Just a guess, It’s fun this baby could end up giving us a whopper or a big ole bust!

        lol-17.5 miles of 94

    2. Jim S.(Saugatuck Twp) says:

I just saw that. The European model has been consistent in showing the low move south and missing Michigan completely. GFS has been all over the place, but has shown the northern edge clipping us. Canadian hits SE Michigan. If I had to guess, I would assume this misses us to the south. Split the difference between the GFS and Euro, and perhaps the border gets some, while north of 94 gets missed. We’ll see.

      1. millekat says:

It can miss us completely at this point. I’m over the snow and ready for spring! It looks like the kiddos won’t be starting soccer practice next week either!

  4. DF (SE Mich) says:

The GR high temp today was at midnight at 29°… cold day.

    1. fixxxer says:

Yup, and they have no idea how much snow will fall… 1 inch? 3 inches?

  6. fixxxer says:

        2. fixxxer says:

Lol…you dont have to feel sorry for me. You like all of this lake effect on the first day of spring and our 20+ below temps becuase of it? They can drain the sucker for all i care.

I dont expect the rest of spring to be much netter either.

        3. Jack says:

        4. fixxxer says:

          Lol…. works everytime.

        5. Cort S. says:

(Pssst, fixx, this cold weather is not due to the lake. You can thank the lake for keeping you several degrees warmer than Milwaukee throughout the winter.)

    2. Hate Lake Effect (NW) says:

I agree… time to start tarping it for the winter, like a pool.

  7. steelie says:

    Good Day,

Had a little fun riding my mountain bike through some powder today in the park as I went to the store. But boy, it was chilly!

    Steelie

    1. fixxxer says:

Much to cold for thid time of year. Most of us knew we would pay for last year.

      1. Brian(Grandville) says:

That’s what I said late last summer.

        1. fixxxer says:

Yup. Lets hope were wrong. Id at least like a 1/2 way decent summer.

        2. Cort S. says:

What if 2012 was payback for 2009?

  8. Geneo Greenville says:

Just a normal March for mich back in the 60&70 years.we get what mother nature give us so get use to it.

    1. fixxxer says:

So we had crap weather back then too huh?

  9. fixxxer says:

Hey bill can you get working on some nice spring weather?…thanks!

  10. Rocky (Rockford) says:

What a great March day! I love the temperatures currently! Lets review the facts:
    1. We are entrenched in a COLD and SNOWY pattern with absolutely no change in sight!
    2. Possible SNOWSTORM on Monday!
    3. All long range models keep us with well below average temperatures along with plenty of SNOWSTORM chances!
    4. The snowmobiling and skiing will be GREAT again this weekend! It will be my 9th weekend in a row! FANTASTIC!
    5. fixxxer needs to go back to hibernating under his rock, however no matter what the weather is he will be complaining and whining!
    6. Hey hey, my my, ROCK n ROLL will never die baby!!

    1. Jack says:

      OR is it MY, MY, HEY, HEY……..Rocky……CUE : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cawk2cMTnGo. Enjoy… ;-)

      1. Rocky (Rockford) says:

My my, hey hey, is way to go Jack! You are the man and that is an awesome song!!!!!!

  11. Rodey (Rockford) says:

    Let’s review the facts:

    1. Temps will average slightly below normal with very little snow.
    2. There will be no snowstorm on Monday.
    3. All long range models show a slow moderating trend with no snow chances.
    4. I will be grilling outside for the 5th straight weekend.
    5. Rocky/Rockford needs to go back under his rock however no matter what the weather he will attempt to be as annoying as possible by repeating the same thing over and over

    1. Rocky (Rockford) says:

fixxxer I see that you are still not facing reality! It is COLD and SNOWY! Get used to it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

      1. fixxxer says:

And rocky i still see you havent returned to pinerest.

    2. Dan says:

      Lets review the facts.

      1. Rodey spends his time restating Rocky’s facts about COLD and SNOW’
      2. Rodey doesn’t like it when others talk about snow and cold..
      3. Rodey really has cold and snow envy.
      4. Rodey can’t find his rock so he frequents the blog to restate the facts about the COLD and SNOW!
      5. Rodey is bored.
      6. Refer to #1 and #4!

      1. Rodey (Rockford) says:

You and Rocky take up too much room under the rock Dan. I actually don’t mind winter what I do mind are the blathering idiots on here repeating the same thing. Those are the facts Dan. Get used to it.

      2. Dan says:

Yes, is that so? You don’t have the right to tell others what to post. Sorry, Rodey! Bill’s Blog is for all. Why do you respond to what you do not like? Judging by your post, you wouldn’t recognize a fact if it hit you like a rock!! Calendar says, Spring. Weather says, Snow! Go out and enjoy it. why spend all your time going after Rocky?

        1. Rodey (Rockford) says:

Then why do you try to tell others what to post? Why do you spend all of your time going after Fixxer? You do it because others do it and because of his constant annoying whining just like Rocky repeatedly saying the same thing to get a rise out of people. I recognize facts much better than you and a few others on here. I also recognize hype which you and a few others do on here. You’re right, Bills Blog is for all so I’ll be sticking around. Thanks for listening.

        2. Dan says:

You’ve got it wrong, Rodey! I ENJOY the weather, especially Winter weather. If I come across as hype in my comments that is your bad for reading it that way. I have a decent knowledge base about the weather, all kind of weather. Many others on here know a lot more about the weather than I do. Your elitist attitude is what stinks. I’m only teasing with fixxxer and he knows it! The only time I am more critical with him is when he comes across as attacking me. Quite frankly, you come across as a spoiled brat. It is not my fault that you did not get your way and it certainly is not Rocky’s fault. Rocky enjoys posting about Winter weather. Are you envious of him? Look at the time and effort you waste just on responding to his comments. It appears that you miss quite a few facts. Don’t take my word for it, go back and read most of your posts!

      3. Rocky (Rockford) says:

Dan that was a GREAT comment! LOL!

        1. Rodey (Rockford) says:

Nah really wasn’t impressive at all.

  12. Rob( Norton Shores) says:

It feels like I’m in a snow globe.

    1. fixxxer says:

Im missing detroit even more since they don’t get this lake effect BS.

  13. Rocky (Rockford) says:

Keep the COLD and SNOW rolling! This is the best March weather that I have seen in the last 20 years!!

  14. Mark says:

Any chance we’ll set some kind of year-over-year record in terms of difference in average temperature? For example, March 2013 could end up being, say, 20 degrees cooler on average (for the entire month) than March 2012… would that be some sort of record?

    1. Bill Steffen says:

We sure could set a record. I don’t know what the month-month differential is, but coming off the warmest month relative to average ever…you would think that ending up 4 degrees cooler than average would be at the top of the list.

  15. Mr. Negative says:

And everyone was certain that another Ice Age was beyond their existence. It is underway…embrace the the windy, overcast, 44 degree, fourth of July.

    1. Rocky (Rockford) says:

No I think it may actually be all the way up to 64 degrees by the 4th of July!

      1. Dan says:

Maybe, it’ll be 69 degrees on July 4th!

  16. Dan says:

Lets see if we can get in on that storm for Sunday/Monday! C’mon, Old Man Winter gives your best for the last snow storm of the season!!! 8-12 inches of heavy snow, LETS GO!!!

    1. Rocky (Rockford) says:

I like it! Keep those thoughts going – we may be in for MONSTER SNOWSTORM next week!!!

  17. Dan says:

The warm weather people have not been frequenting the blog. I wonder why that is? Are they out buying light bulbs, and adjusting their own C02 levels? I know, maybe they are enjoying the SNOW!!! WINTER and SPRING in MICHIGAN! You’ve gotta love it!!!

    1. Rodey (Rockford) says:

They are probably tired of the same rhetoric

      1. Rocky (Rockford) says:

        They are whining and hibernating!

  18. Karrie says:

Does anyone know the total snowfall for the Grand Rapids area so far this winter??

    1. Bill Steffen says:

      63.6″ for G.R. and 97″ for Muskegon

  19. Dan says:

SNOW STORM is on the WAY!!! Perhaps, 8-12 inches of SNOW!!! MAYBE, MORE than that!!!! Winter’s/Spring’s big show, you’ve gotta love!!!! “So ya, thought ya, might like ta go to the show”

  20. Jim S.(Saugatuck Twp) says:

The 18z models keep us snow free. The gfs actually shows a warm up in a couple weeks.

    1. Rocky (Rockford) says:

By tomorrow’s model runs the storm will be headed right towards us! Get ready GR!

  21. Brian (Grandville) says:

There could be a significant loss of the deer herd in the U.P. this year with such a deep snow depth lingering probably very late into the season.

    1. Jack says:

      Brian, Nature is What.! Nature what Nature….DOES !…… Stay cued…… Peace… ;-)

  22. Dan says:

Still wanting to see where this March finishes in terms of temps and snowfall!
Right now, temps continuing to be BELOW average and Snow Fall above.
We shall see how the rest of March plays out. SNOW STORM will help! I bet we don’t moderate to above 40 degrees until at least another week to two weeks! Maybe, I’m wrong but it sure looks to stay cold!

  23. Dan says:

Its funny, I heard a couple radio DJs blaming the Groundhog for this snow and cold. I think, many expect what happened last year in terms of the warm March to be the norm.

  24. Christopher Maas says:

Looks like lake effect is not ramping up as much as it has in the NE US where they are getting over 1 or 2 feet of lake effect snow :(

  25. Jim S.(Saugatuck Twp) says:

Despite 2 lake effect advisories, we have had little snow the past two days. Ironically, despite the cold March, I very well could end up with below average snowfall for march. Just 4″ so far this month.

  26. Christopher Maas says:

Same here in Holland/Zeeland very little snow..do not get the point of advisory..except maybe for the reduced visibilities

  27. Michael (Berrien county) says:

I’ve never been under a lake snow advisory for 3-6 inches on the 1st night of spring with temps in the teens…. but I guess there’s a 1st time for everything! :-)

    1. mr. negative says:

Embrace the new normal, and let’s not be surprised when the same forecast is used for Memorial Day…

      1. Rocky (Rockford) says:

        That is the spirit!

        1. SBPortage002 says:

Now you are just getting ridiculous. You love it so much, move to Alaska.

      2. Michael (Berrien county) says:

I saw accumulating snow in May one time about 20 years back growing up in Illinois….. so ya never know!

        1. Brian (Grandville) says:

I did to, 1 time. I think it was 1990.

  28. Rocky (Rockford) says:

COLD and SNOW ROCKS! Keep it going! Skiing in April this year!!!!

  29. ninifere says:

Skies went clear and quickly dropped to 9* here in NE GR…. pretty darn chilly for March

  30. Travis Ulberg (West of Martin, Allegan County) says:

The snow doesn’t look too impressive on the radar. It better start ramping up for anywhere to meet the advisory snow amounts. The snow showers start quite a ways over the water, so I’m surprised the snow isn’t heavier and more persistent. I have received much here, only a half inch so far.

    1. Travis Ulberg (West of Martin, Allegan County) says:

      haven’t*

  31. dave says:

How much snow have we had so far this lingering winter?

    1. Bill Steffen says:

      64.5″ in G.R. and 98″ in Muskegon

      1. michael g (SE GR) says:

        2.5″ to go Bill! :-)

  32. So does anyone know is the snow wrapping up for the night or is it gonna ramp back up??

    1. Travis Ulberg (West of Martin, Allegan County) says:

Looks like just light snow along the lake shore to me. The snow never ramped up like they said it would, which is a shame because of how cold it is.

  33. michael g (SE GR) says:

Hey Brad/Kevin/Joanne/BigDaddy, after your call for 70′s in February turned out to be a bust, I started looking forward to the 80′s you predicted for March. Any updates on when I should expect those?

  34. michael g (SE GR) says:

12* here and dropping like a rock. Anyone know what the record lows are for the 20th/21st?

    1. michael g (SE GR) says:

Almost like he read my mind, Bill just said the record for tomorrow in GR is 9*. We have a shot!

    2. DF (SE Mich) says:

It looks like the record low for tomorrow is about 8°… there is a chance.
I can’t find the actual records for GR, I am only judging from the climate plot.
      http://www.crh.noaa.gov/images/grr/climate/plots/KGRRcurrentBIG.png

    3. DF (SE Mich) says:

Detroit record lows are still in the negatives for the next couple days. The real reason I bring it up is because of their great records table.
      http://www.crh.noaa.gov/dtx/display_climate.php?file=records_DTW_Mar_inc.htm

      Where is GR’s like this?!?

  35. bnoppe(Albion) says:

    This cold needs to end!

  36. Travis Ulberg (West of Martin, Allegan County) says:

Wow, very impressive snow in northern lower right now! I’d guess about 2″ per hour snowfall rates right now in some places! And it’s looking like a bust for us today. Tuesday we had an advisory for 1-3″, and I received 5.8″. Today we originally had an advisory for 2-5″, and I’ll be lucky to even get to the 1″ on the 1-3″ current advisory.

  37. mr. negative says:

Hey kids, time to start a log of your life. Let’s start this year. Be sure to note that 2013 was the beginning of the Ice Age that could’nt happen to you. Every month from here on out…5-15 degrees below average. Embrace the chill.

  38. Matt (Spring Lake) says:

We have been getting nice snow squalls in this area since the afternoon. We have probably picked up a couple inches. It is so hard to tell with blowing around and compaction…

  39. Travis Ulberg (West of Martin, Allegan County) says:

00Z GFS gives us a little more snow tomorrow, but keeps the Sunday/Monday storm well to our south.

  40. INDY says:

INDY is raedy for a Blizzard Sunday into Monday ..Stay tuned!! INDYY..

  41. Travis (Lake Odessa) says:

    I want THUNDERSTORMS!!

  42. Travis Ulberg (West of Martin, Allegan County) says:

We received 0.6″ of snow on Wednesday giving me a total of 99.6″ for the season. Oh so close to 100″!

    1. Travis Ulberg (West of Martin, Allegan County) says:

Oh, and I forgot, 10.95″ for March so far.

  43. Jack says:

Hmmm, Don’t ask Me Why, My Mind went to This Song by Merle Hagard TONIGHT. However here it is ! CUE: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4VYaeMcZV30. ;-) . Still Fits… ;-)

    1. Jack says:

      And…Segue into This Jackson Browne…..Spin: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VPFdbKLUmQk. ;-) )

  44. Tom L says:

I would be very curious to see a study of what, if any, impact the lack of solar activity has had on our global weather patterns over the past decade.
As we all know, the sun goes through cycles of “low solar activity” and times of “high solar activity”…peaking at its’ highest level every twelth year.
We should be in a peak year for old sol, and he should be showing great amounts of sunspots and related solar storms but, so far at least, there has been very little evidence of increased solar activity.
Maybe there is some link between the sun’s activity (or lack of it) and our recent weather? :)

    1. Still more research needs to be done around that but I agree the sun could have an overall climate link. I would also include volcanos and volcanos on the ocean floors. I think the big thing we are finding out is that the oceans are a big part of the global jet stream patterns. So I guess there is nothing new under the sun. ;^)

      1. Skot says:

It is a little known fact fixxxer changes our weather. All his hot air.
