Happy Spring!

March 20th, 2013 at 12:01 am by under Bill's Blog, Weather

Trobin in snow jack martin reportitoday (Wednesday) is Vernal or Spring Equinox. The official start of spring is at 7:02 AM this morning. The word “equinox” means equal night. Today, we have approximately 12 hours of daylight over every point on the globe. The sun technically rose for the first time in 6 months at the North Pole and set at the S. Pole, ushering 6 months without sunshine there. The sun is directly overhead along the Equator at solar noon on the Equinoxes. In the Southern Hemisphere, it’s the start of autumn. At this time of year, we gain about 20 minutes of daylight each week.   This year is a far cry from last year.  Yesterday, we had a high temp. of 29 in G.R. on March 19.   A year ago the high temp. was 81.  Picture from Jack Martin at ReportItClick here to see the picture full screen.

Also…Shiverin’ Snowman!  Check out the webcam from Krupp’s Resort in Twin Lakes!   Through Tue. Grand Rapids is 2.9 deg. cooler than average for March and Kalamazoo is 3.3 deg. cooler than avg. for March.

Thanks Jack. My group of 4 guys will have fun at Cabela’s. Looks like a little snow falling in Grandville now. That Robin looks like it has a nest made out of cotton balls. 18.9° here.

Methinks that the robin is wondering what kind of cruel joke Mother Nature has played. I’ve seen flocks of sandhill cranes for a couple of weeks. Haven’t seen redwing blackbirds or killdeers yet, which are a more true sign of spring showing up than the robins are (robins will winter here in protected areas – I saw one at my birdbath one VERY cold day in early Feb a few years back).

  2. Due to it being Spring now, I was wondering if there was something going on in the western sky right now? There are 2 very shiny stars. One is down and to the right of the moon and the other is down and to the left of the moon. There is also a very distinct red star down below the moon. I live in Nashville, MI. These all caught my eye and is very interesting to see. They are beautiful. If you could please let me know what these are it would be great. My 16 year old son is also interested in them. Thank you for your time.

Check out “This Week’s Sky at a Glance” http://www.skyandtelescope.com/observing/ataglance One of the bright “stars” is the planet Jupiter. The red star is probably Aldebaran (the eye of the bull Taurus). Betelgeuse is also a red star and part of the constellation Orion (with the 3 stars in a row forming the belt of Orion, the Hunter). Capella, Rigel and Sirius are also bright stars plainly visible now in our night sky: http://www.almanac.com/sites/new.almanac.com/files/skymap_march2013.pdf
