Record Late Season Snow in the U.P.

March 21st, 2013 at 12:17 pm by under Bill's Blog, Weather

snow marquette march 2013   Snow continues to pile up in the U.P.  Check these morning snow depth reports:  Grand Marais (south of town) 62″ (15.7″ new snow – still snowing!), Hoist Basin (west of MQT) 60″,  48″ Twin Lakes, Munising 47″ (12.9″ new), 44″ Atlantic Mine, 42″ Bergland Dam, 41″ Tahquamenon Falls, 40″ Marquette Airport, 38″ Paradise, 35″ Newberry (8.2″ new), 30″ S. Ste Marie.      In Lower Michigan:  20″ Gaylord, 15″ Kalkaska (4″ new), 14″ Traverse City, 11″ Houghton Lake, 10″ Scottville, 7″ Oshtemo, 5″ Alpena, 3″ Muskegon, Ionia, Hart, Fremont, Grandville, 2″ Grand Rapids, Kalamazoo,  Hastings, 1″ Lansing, Alma, Big Rapids.  Ski conditions at area resorts are about as good as it gets in March.  Snow maching/snowmobiles can go around or north of U.S. 10 to find mid-winter riding.  Be careful, but there are still placs where you can get some ice fishing in.  (pic. of Curtis MI courtesy of the Marquette NWS and TV 7 & 4).  The cold, snowy pattern continues.  Winter Storm Warnings down to Arkansas with snow showers likely into northern Mississippi!        Also:  Michigan State rocks!  Severe Storms likely along the Gulf of Mexico Saturday.  Only 12 tornadoes in the U.S. this month so far.  Record low?  154 tornadoes and 43 fatalities in March 2012.     Arctic Oscillation, which is about as low (negative) as it gets right now (blocking forcing cold air down into the U.S.), forecast to ease back closer to neutral (but still a little negative) in mid-April…so not real warm, but certainly not as cold as the pattern we have now.   Detroit area feelin’ the chill.

when will it end bill? what are your thoughts on spring & summer this year?

  2. GunLakeDeb says:

Whee! It was a balmy 11 degrees at 7:30 AM! I’m amazed that the SW corner of the lake, which has been open water for a week now, is still open and hasn’t refrozen. I guess there’s enough wind to keep it moving?

  3. Jim S.(Saugatuck Twp) says:

Well, while the models are way south on the storm for Monday, the Canadian shows a full blown snowstorm nailing West Michigan. Has a low down to 988mb cruising up through Indiana, before weakening and moving east. Clearly an outlier.

    1. Actually that model has been scoring very well in NA since they did an upgrade in early February. Actually running ahead of the Euro during the same time frame from a verification perspective. Keep in eye on that one to see if other models start trending towards it. If the Euro does then it may be on to something.

    2. bnoppe(Albion) says:

I think that’s why IWX and DTW still have a mention of the system moving more northerly

  4. GFS after going south on the 06z run is now back north a big again on the 12z

  5. Yup (Grandville) says:

Look at all those sleds hiding under that blanket of snow. I can tell you if I lived up there, I would be snow snowmobiling constantly.

    1. Yup (Grandville) says:

      Oops…. double double :)

  6. Travis Ulberg (West of Martin, Allegan County) says:

Western U.P. trail report is reporting an AVERAGE snowfall since Monday of 28″ for Gogebic County, and 4-5′+ on the ground right now! I couldn’t image that much snow on top of the 3′+ snow depth they had on Sunday, especially with the blowing and drifting that would be taking place off of the insanely high snow banks. Also more reports that local residents were running out of places to pile up the snow in some of the towns by the snowmobile trails! It’s just a shame that almost all of the snowmobile trails close on March 31st.

    1. Yup (Grandville) says:

Do they close them up in the UP as well?

      1. Travis Ulberg (West of Martin, Allegan County) says:

        Here is the report…

“What can I say other than snow, snow and more snow. We have gotten an average of 28 inches of new snow in the last week. Some places in Gogebic County got more and some got less. Temps for today will be in the 20’s and for the weekend highs will be in the 30’s with lows in the teens. Snowmobiling is the best it has been all season. With our low traffic and great condition now is the time to come and have a great time riding. Our time for riding is winding down we only have little over a week left before the trails close.”

I do know there are some places that can continue snowmobiling on the marked trails into April, but I’m not sure on exactly what locations/trails they are.

        1. GunLakeDeb says:

I’m *guessing* that the agreements between private property owners and the Clubs who set up the trails, ends on that date?? Or maybe they pull out any small bridges they constructed over creeks, for fear they’ll wash away in spring runoffs? Like I said – just guessing, because it seems pretty obvious they’ll have plenty of snow for a while….

        2. Travis Ulberg (West of Martin, Allegan County) says:

I’m not sure if it’s because it’s forest land, private land, because of hunting, or what it could be. Because like I told Bill, the Allegan State Game Area here in Allegan County is closed through December 31st for hunting. Which is just one reason I’d rather have more snow in January and February.

  7. Travis Ulberg (West of Martin, Allegan County) says:

And I just went out to measure the new snowfall, and we’ve added another inch since 11am. Putting me up to 12.5″ for March, and 101.1″ for the season.

    1. Jack says:

When was the last time, ya reached the Century mark ? Travis.

      1. Travis Ulberg (West of Martin, Allegan County) says:

I believe it’s been 3 years. And I believe it’s the 3rd time in the last 5 years with 100″+ here.

    2. GunLakeDeb says:

It’s melting here, faster than it’s coming down. Where the wind scoured the snow off our lawn, now I have bare spots, despite the fact that it has snowed all day.

  8. fixxxer says:

i just cannot believe how active the lake effect is this year. not that we have had any major storms thankfully but enough is enough already.

  9. Nathan says:

It’s snowing pretty heavily here in south GR!

  10. INDY says:

Wow Bill so what your saying snow to May now LOVE IT!! INDYY…

  11. INDY says:

Yup Harry mugusty did say back in Jan. snow and cold is coming storm ater storm he was so right… We have had snow on the ground for over 3 months now winter just rolling and going a little late!! With thee crack in the earth’s axis now seasons run a lilttle longer or over lap each other thee new norm for our world we love!! thanks to quake Japan.. Stay tuned INDYY….

  12. Jim S.(Saugatuck Twp) says:

12Z European model is a bit north of its earlier track with the Monday storm. It still keeps West Michigan clear of snow, but hits Indiana pretty hard. Canadian would wallop us pretty good. GFS and NAM are now the furthest south.

    1. GFS is a bit north of the last run, but I think both will trend north, not sure how far but if you live in IN or IL hang on to your butts…

    2. SlimJim NW GR (1) says:

There was a time when the Canadian was a model to look at around here in the winter time. While not so much in the summer time.

  13. Jack says:

    Yay…Spartans !!!! ;-)

  14. kevin. w says:

Cold wet spring and cold wet summer followed by an early winter in September that will last til the following May. Yep its looking cold and probably farmers won’t be able to plant this year will be to wet and cold. Sounds good then we can all starve and freeze and ride our snowmobiles till we drop over dead. LOL

    1. SlimJim NW GR (1) says:

I would not go that far yet…but a cold early spring is very possible and who knows how long it will hang on?? As for the models! well what can you say?

    2. fixxxer says:

      Lay off the booze kevin.

  15. Rocky (Rockford) says:

Great information Bill and I have been telling all of the warm weather crazies that we have been in a COLD and SNOWY pattern for the last 3 to 4 weeks and NO CHANGE IN SIGHT! Maybe now that they see you, the expert, confirming this they may actually start to face reality!!

  16. Rocky (Rockford) says:

Another FANTASTIC March day! Temps below freezing with on and off SNOW! It will be another great weekend out on the trails! I love it and keep the COLD and SNOW rocking! It does not get better than this!!!

    1. fixxxer says:

      Rj shut it!

      1. Rocky (Rockford) says:

COLD AND SNOW ROCKS!! Keep it going for three more weeks baby!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

        1. fixxxer says:

Rj your an attention whore, nothing more, nothing less.

        2. Rocky (Rockford) says:

Just the facts fixxxer. THANKS FOR LISTENING AND GET USED TO IT!!

        3. fixxxer says:

Or should i call you jordan?

        4. goaway says:

          Straight from Bill’s forecast:
          “What We’re Tracking

          No Big Storms

          Occasional Flurries and Continued Cool”

          GET USED TO IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  17. SlimJim NW GR (1) says:

Iam sure the CPC has a good reason for coming up with their April guess, but at this time I just do not buy into it…

and for the rest of the spring

I am sure there will be time for this to happen but we will have to have a major pattern change and until that happens it will be more of the same…while maybe not as cold it still will be below average (until we get a pattern change)
Its now 31° here with a few flurries we did have a good snow shower come thru a while back!

    1. DF (SE Mich) says:

      Just like their March guess…

    2. fixxxer says:

Im sure by late may or june it will be plenty warm slim. We go through this about every year.

    3. Bill Steffen says:

They must be expecting a big flip for April, because April should start cooler than average here in the Great Lakes. The Arctic Oscillation comes back out of the negative tank, but the index values don’t suggest a flip to much warmer than average yet. We’re also going to start the month with a ton of snow on the ground in northern Michigan. That’ll take some time to melt off.

      1. Rocky (Rockford) says:

A ton of SNOW! Who knew and where have I heard that before?

      2. michael g (SE GR) says:

And an ice cold lake, which will keep areas from GR to the lake shore chilly even when warmer air does move in.

  18. I like both of those outlooks, good for the great lakes and the farmers
when weather breaks, it’s not like the 1970s or 80s. Those boys can plant a huge number of fields in a hurry now-a-days !!

    1. GunLakeDeb says:

I was thinking the same thing (would also make for fun kayaking – last Spring, the rivers felt like “late summer” due to low water levels). But I’m not gonna hold my breath because we’ve seen these forecasts sometimes be the polar opposite of what happens.

  19. Rocky (Rockford) says:

Come on – lets move that big SNOWSTORM right towards Grand Rapids! I love the Canadian model! If that model ends up being correct this will end up being a MONSTER SNOWSTORM! Keep the COLD and SNOW rocking and rolling well into APRIL!!!

    1. GunLakeDeb says:

Are you still driving north to snowmobile?? Our ground has warmed too much – even with the COLD temps this week (it was 11 degrees this AM), the ground is warm and mushy and melting the snow as fast as it falls. I can see a trail from my window here at work – and it’s 50% dirt :-(

      1. Swatz_Zoo(Cedar Springs) says:

Well it’s only 3-4 days out and my one goose-o-meter is already throwing fits today, he usually is this obnoxious and loud when he senses a MAJOR change coming, so we’ll se if his behavior continues on and worsens closer Sunday-Monday gets.
I also hope early mid april isn’t to cold, I have baby goslings due to hatch around the 11th!!

        1. fixxxer says:

April will suck swatz. You guys wanted normal, well here ya go. bLah!

        2. Swatz_Zoo(Cedar Springs) says:

Fixxx I never said I wanted normal but it is what it is nothing we can do about it. I just hope we see a good amount of good heart pounding thunderstorms in our/my area.

        3. fixxxer says:

Wasn’t talking to you swatz. As far as storms you know my stance. We aren’t going to get much if we don’t start warming up.

        4. Rocky (Rockford) says:

fixxxer you might want to up your meds to a much higher dose!!

      2. Rocky (Rockford) says:

I am still planning to go North – Fife Lake area. Their trails will be in perfect shape. They have picked up well over 8 inches of SNOW in the last couple days!! Simpy amazing weather!

        1. fixxxer says:

How about you go up north and stay there.

        2. Rocky (Rockford) says:

Maybe in a about 5 years! I am considering moving up to the Bellaire/Shanty Creek area to enjoy even more COLD and SNOW!!!

        3. SW Kent says:

So does well over 8 inches mean 8.75 inches or 15 inches?

        4. Bill Steffen says:

There’s a weather station 11 SSE of Kalkaska…not too far away. They report 6.1″ in the last 3 days, 9.8″ in the last week and 14.2″ in the last 9 days.

        5. Rocky (Rockford) says:

They currently have anywhere from 20 to 30 inches of snow on the ground and they have picked up a good foot of snow since Monday. The conditions will be perfect and the best that I have seen this late in the season in a long, long time! The COLD and SNOWY pattern just keeps rolling along with NO CHANGE IN SIGHT!

        6. fixxxer says:

Along with the snow i hope rj will be leaving soon too. Someone should shoot that damn groundhog.

        7. Rocky (Rockford) says:

Once the winter weather is over I am out of here fixxxer, then you can whine and complain all you want. It will be up to someone else to remind you to face reality and deal with it!!

        8. michael g (SE GR) says:

A “damn” and a “whore” tonight. Way to stay classy fix.

    2. goaway says:

NO nononono. Keep it away from here. We do not want snow into April. You had your winter season it’s time for us to have Spring. GET USED TO IT, it’s officially Spring and this snow WILL end-maybe not for several weeks *cringe* but it WILL end. GET USED TO IT!!!!!!!!

  20. Jack says:

Through it All, The Best Thing in Life is FREE !!!! CUE: ;-)

  21. Rocky (Rockford) says:

All long range models still show COLD air with plenty of SNOW chances! I love it!
Baseball season will be having a brutal first week or so of the season. They will be trying to play baseball while I am skiing :)

  22. Rodey (Rockford) says:

Fantastic news. The long range models show a slow and steady warm up with very little precipitation. More great news. The Monday storm will pass south of Michigan. Fantastic news. I will be grilling outside this weekend for the sixth straight weekend. More fantastic news. No snow storms for the next 8 months. I love it.

    1. Rocky (Rockford) says:

      fixxxer, keep dreaming!

  23. Rocky (Rockford) says:

It is a GREAT March day! COLD and SNOW and wins by MSU and UM! I don’t see how it could be any better!! Enjoy the COLD and SNOW people, because we will be seeing a lot more before any type of warm Spring weather arrives!

    1. Rodey (Rockford) says:

Enjoy the next few cool days people because a gradual WARM up starts next week. I love it, no snow storms for the next 8 months. Doesnt get any better than that. Fantastic

    2. Michael (Berrien county) says:

Sure wish I could hitch a ride up to the yooper with ya!

  24. Brian(Grandville) says:

Just purchased the PYKL3 radar app for my kindle. I like the radarscope app for my I-phone, but this app is bad ass.

  25. Michael (Berrien county) says:

I’m luvin’ the 12Z GEM forecast for the Sunday/Monday storm!!!!

    1. Nathan says:

      Yea, but that’s an outlier

      1. Michael (Berrien county) says:

Actually the 00Z NAM coming out now is starting to push the storm further north too. Giving me .25-.50″ water equivalent. Should be interesting to see if the northward trend continues on the next run.

  26. Jack says:

    Just a little Friday Morning…MUSIC, from Steely Dan !!! Cue : ;-) .

  27. Brad says:

How about some intellectual fodder. In a post-Christ world, is Mr. Obama a sufficient object of worship? If not, how is He lacking?

      1. Brad says:

Jack, you’re never without a fitting tune. I have come to appreciate your positivity here on Bill’s blog!

        1. Jack says:

          Tx’s Brad,it is appreciated ! :-) Stay Cued….and….Happy Spring 2 U ! Peace …. ;-)

  28. Travis Ulberg (West of Martin, Allegan County) says:

I ended up receiving 1.8″ on Thursday, giving me 8.2″ since Tuesday morning. We currently have an average snow depth of 9″ on our deck, and 4″ on the ground. I doubt this fluffy snow will last long though.

    1. Travis Ulberg (West of Martin, Allegan County) says:

And here’s the pic all the snow on my deck…

Pretty incredible, because all of last winter the most snow we had on our deck was only 0.5″ more than we have right now on the 3rd day of spring!

      1. GunLakeDeb says:

You sure live in a “persistent snowband”!! At least in MY case, Mother Nature has handled the snow-clearing chores this week….LOL! And despite the cold – the open water on Gun Lake continues its march northward. I’ll bet there will be a bunch of fishing boats launching at the Allegan Park tomorrow! And I’m guessing that lakes elsewhere have opened because I haven’t seen the eagle family in several days.

  29. Terry says:

March is the new February. Our website traffic is equal to last years January traffic. We are still shipping electric comfort heaters via UPS Red. Spring Ice Fishing? How about that record Antarctic ice extent and nearly blank sunspots!!!!
