Coast to Coast Cold

difax   This is the high temperature map from March 25th.  Click the image to enlarge.  Once again it’s pretty much coast-to-coast cold.  Here’s some high temps. for Monday with the average high temp. in ( ):  Fairbanks, AK 10 (30), Nome AK -2 (19), Anchorage AK 24 (36), Idaho Falls 35 (50), Baker OR 47 (53), Provo UT 48 (59), Cheyenne WY 35 (50), Clayton NM 32 (60), Denver CO 27 (57), Glendive MT 19 (49), Williston ND 21 (45), Watertown SD 26 (43), Grand Island NE 29 (55), Topeka KS 34 (60), Oklahoma City 45 (67), Dallas 54 (70) Shreveport LA 57 (72), Hot Springs AR 45 (66), St. Louis 36 (60) Des Moines 37 (53), Madison WI 34 (47), Springfield IL 35 (56) Detroit 40 (50), Indianapolis 34 (56), London KY 36 (62), Dayton OH 33 (53), Knoxville TN 40 (64), Tupelo MS 43 (68) Huntsville AL 41 (68), Atlanta 55 (67), Andersonville SC 46 (67), Asheville NC 40 (61), Richmond Va 39 (63), Charleston WV 41 (60), Pittsburgh 36 (53), Philadelphia 39 (56), New York City 40 (53) Atlantic City 39 (54).  Winter lingers with snow and colder than average temperatures across much of Europe and Russia.  Read this article on the snow and cold across Europe.  The Danube River is clogged with ice and ice has formed on the canals of Venice, Italy!  Hundreds of people have died from exposure to the cold.  The Daily Mail claims 5,000 cold weather related fatalities and the longest winter in 50 years!  Jim Andrews, meteorologist with Accu-Weather said “”I looked back over 20 years and found a few significant cold snaps, but I didn’t find anything quite as strong as this one.”  Belgrade had a a high of 10 F (minus 12 C) and a low of minus 11 F (minus 24 C). That was nearly 40 degrees F below normal for the day.  The heaviest March snows in at least 400 years canceled scores of outdoor activities in Budapest on Friday.  Nearly 6,000 cars were stranded on the roads and some 18 trains were stuck Friday between stations in deep snowdrifts in Hungary.  Record cold temperatures for so late in the season occurred across much of Europe late last week. Snow fell in London, Paris and northern Italy at Florence. One citrus growing region in southern Spain reported an all-time mid March low temperature of 23 degrees last Friday morning. It was 27 degrees at another station in North Africa. Even northern India saw snow this week.  A rare mid-March freeze has killed crops in N. Africa.  Much of S. America is also cooler than average now.  Here’s record and near record temperatures for the day.

CRISP sky tonight, Moon was killer. I can smell the warmth coming. Seriously. I have instincts.

    1. Skot says:

      CRAP! ………FIRST!!!

    2. GunLakeDeb says:

ROFL!!! No offense, Skot – but saying “the warmth is coming” during the last week in March is a pretty safe bet ;-) I’ll go out on a limb and say “Rain is in our future”!

      1. Tim from Zeeland says:

Deb, I’ll do one better. It will turn hot come July. Okay, warmer than now. I’m almost certain.

        1. Jack says:

          Tim,I’ll do 1 Better….TONIGHTS WEATHER….. “DARK”. Stay cued… Lololo… ;-)

  2. Vincent(N.E.Kent CO) says:

Pertnear a full moon. Kinda has a egg shape to it like an Easter Egg. 30.4°. Hope it warms up soon. The boys from sring baseball down south will not be able to play good. They never seem to warm up and get going good untill June anyways.

  3. Nathan says:

Too warm for snow, too cold for enjoyment! But, it looks like warmer is on the way for after spring break, with highs in the fifties and maybe sixties.

    1. Nathan says:

      Over exaggeration. :p

  4. INDY says:

MORE BELOW TEMPS ON 3/26/13 JUST THE COLD FACTS… 50′S LOOK A LITTLE OVER DONE LIKE TRAVIS 3 MONTHS OF WARM AIR COMING BILL… MAYBE MID 40′S THEN IT GETS COLD AGAIN NEXT WEEK WITH SNOW!!! STAY TUNED INDYY..

    1. Travis (Oakland County) says:

CPC does, indeed, say a warm spring/early summer coming (Apr-June):

      http://www.cpc.ncep.noaa.gov/products/predictions/long_range/lead01/off01_temp.gif

Then again, they also had us down for a warm March ha

I think the kiss of death was Joe B’s call for a blowtorch March for the Midwest.

      1. DF (SE Mich) says:

I agree, it is Joe B’s fault.

    2. GB says:

INDYYY DOES THEE BLOG NEED TO BUY YOU A NEW KEY BOARD? YOUR’S APEARS TO BE BROKEN.

      1. undyy says:

        YOU THINK?

  5. Travis (Oakland County) says:

Ahhh, if WXYZ Detroit is to be believed then 50 this weekend and thunderstorms returning next week.

After being a warmer than average March til the 17th or 18th, the NWS closest to me is now -3 below average thanks to last week where we only saw a couple days in the 40′s.

    1. fixxxer says:

again travis i fail to see why you hang out on a west michigan blog.

      1. Travis (Oakland County) says:

I don’t know why you post it in a weather blog, fix, if you hate the weather all the time ;)

      2. undyy says:

Again I fail to see why you care. At least Travis contributes to the blog. All you do is your whiney, gloomy we are all doomed EEyore act. Why aren’t you on the Winnie The Pooh blog? I believe everyone from this great state and the whole gosh darned United States is welcome on Bills Blog gosh darned it.

        1. fixxxer says:

          Lol…

      3. Rodey (Rockford) says:

I believe it says Bills Blog not Bills Westside Blog. Based on what you are saying, only people who live in the City of Detroit can be fans of the Detroit Tigers because they are not called the Michigan Tigers right?

        1. fixxxer says:

          Okay rj. ;)

    2. michael g (SE GR) says:

First half of the month sure was a scorcher! (Per Travis (somewhere else))

  6. SlimJim NW GR (1) says:

Its cloudy and 33° here in Walker. So far March of 2013 is at -4.7° here in GR. And the warmest it has gotten so far this month is only 53°GR with a total of only 7 days of 40° or better. That’s one day of 53, one day at 52 two days at 42 and three day at 40° so it has been a very cold month here in GR.
    SlimJim

    1. Travis (Oakland County) says:

You’re right. Detroit’s average March temp is almost 3 degrees warmer than GR with a high temp of 65 and another day at 58.

  10. So are we looking at accumulating snow next week or just some flurries and mainly rain? I’m hoping just rain..

    1. Swatz_Zoo(Cedar Springs) says:

Figures when the kiddo’s have spring break to be inside rather than outside, but we’ll figure out stuff to do.

  11. fixxxer says:

we get it bill, were probably going to have a cold spring and summer. i see where these threads are going and implying.

  12. Travis Ulberg (West of Martin, Allegan County) says:

  13. Nathan says:

41 degrees right now.. Already 3 degrees above the expected high! Looks like people are overestimating the cold air mass

    1. Bill Steffen says:

I had out 40 for a high today. Looks like we made 42.

  14. SlimJim NW GR (1) says:

Looking out the window we are now getting light snow and the temp is now down to 38°

  15. steelie says:

    Good Day,

Near Breton and 52nd… We have had some light intermittent grauple this afternoon.

If the forecast is correct, Saturday looks to be a pretty nice day for this time of year – sun and 50* – I’ll take it. It is interesting that there are forecasts out there that call for a rather quick if not “extreme” warm up come mid-April. Hmmm… Just so long as if that happens, we don’t get a killing freeze like last year.

    Steelie

    1. SlimJim NW GR (1) says:

It will not get warm enough…long enough for any killing freeze problems. For that to happen we would have to get well into the 70′s for several days with lots of warm rain and even if that dose happen its better in mid April then mid March like last year…one thing to keep in mind is that we can have a killing freeze in late May and still have problems its just the nature of things around here. Just had a quick moderate snow shower here.
      SlimJim

      1. steelie says:

        Good Day,

Indeed Slim. Our average last freeze is in mid-May. Crossing my fingers…

        Steelie

    2. SlimJim NW GR (1) says:

And yes if it makes it to 50° with sun it will feel nice out for a change. But will wait and see if it happens first.
      SlimJim

  16. michael g (SE GR) says:

Seemed like an almost decent day out, until the heavy shower of snow pellets and wind moved in and the temp dropped 5* to 37*, with the wind blowing it is back to feeling terrible. I think I like the old normal better. Well, not the old normal, because that was a lot like this, but the intermediate normal, you know, last year.

  17. michael g (SE GR) says:

Hoping fix will check in soon to blame today’s precip on Lake Michigan. Fingers crossed.

    1. Jack says:

Michael G. : This weather is CRAPPY enough we don’t need FIX, 2 complain about Lake Michigan. Talk about adding Insult to Injury !! Geez…… ;-) . Lol…..stay cued…. ;-)

    2. fixxxer says:

Its called lake effect for a reason mike.

      1. michael g (SE GR) says:

Bingo. That’s why the precip was all around Lake Michigan today, but not over it right fix?

  18. michael g (SE GR) says:

Some of those snow pellets sitting in the grass could qualify as small hail, better than 1/4″

  19. Jack says:

Right NOW…N.E. GR . Moderate Graupel/ tiny Hail…MIX..YUCK !!!! Ugly WEATHER. Bring onSPRING and SUN !

  20. Nathan says:

    Moderate snow here

    1. Jack says:

      Here…..??? Nathan . ;)

      1. Nathan says:

        Forest Hills

        1. Jack says:

          That’s what I thought Nathan. Thank- You,for Clarifying . Stay cued… ;-)

  21. Dan says:

Snow, please go away! How many days until those 60 degree temps? Cmon Spring!

  22. SlimJim NW GR (1) says:

Just had a very heavy shower of snow pellets and or small hail and now the ground is covered here and the temp has gone down to 34° I am glad I did my walk when the sun can out for a brief time and not now…its still snowing pellets but at a lesser rate then a few minutes ago…

  23. Jack says:

    What a ” Grab Bag” of Weather, In Michigan….TODAY ( as Always)…. :-(

  24. GunLakeDeb says:

POUNDING snow here now – HUGE fat flakes!! Maybe 200 yds visibility. My lawn is getting white! I’m sure it won’t last but a few minutes – had a brief burst of rain/sleet/snow earlier today

    1. GunLakeDeb says:

And now it’s done. Sure was pretty for a moment!

  25. Dan says:

Enjoy the short lived warm up to near the 50 degree mark by Friday. Looking like it cools back down into the weekend. Snow or rain with the next system?
I’m placing my bet that we get some snow with that system.

  26. Mr. Negative says:

SE GR currently under a violent, windy, graupel attack!

    1. Jack says:
