Live Radar Blog Thread

May 29th, 2013 at 1:32 am by under Bill's Blog, Weather

Local  8:30 AM Weds. – writing from Richmond KY on the way to see my mother in Oak Ridge TN.  88 degrees here today.  Got a nice motel for $50 (inc. tax) with breakfast and a pool.  The deal was with a coupon from a pamphlet at a rest stop on I-75.    They had just filled the pool and the water was a little chilly, but I got to swim around for 20 minutes.  I’ve seen gas as cheap as $3.49 in OH and KY.  With chances for rain/storms each day, I’ll leave the radar toward the top of the blog with the Severe Weather Outlooks and links below.  My posts will be few this week, as I’ll concentrate on mom.  Here’s the GRR NWS discussion. Use the links below and in the next couple threads to keep up with the weather. Watch for updates on WOOD-TV. For current Michigan weather observations and wind speeds, click here. Have a nice time, Bill. Thanks for all you do.

  2. Skot says:

50 bucks isnt to shabby. But I’ve paid less, after bar specials don’t cha know.

    1. Skot says:

seriously Bill have a great time . You left knowing the storms were coming, but you were reassured ALSO knowing (Wink wink) we all would be fine in the greater GR area due to the “Great Bubble.!!!” How dOoooooooooooo you do it big guy??

  3. Mark (East Lansing) says:

You still know of “no tell” motels that charge by the hour?

    1. Skot says:

not anymore….but I did marry a bartender. LOL

      1. Mark (East Lansing) says:

        LOL nice!

  4. michael g (SE GR) says:

Have a great trip Bill! Fill up your tank before you get back in state. $3.99 here.

    1. DF (SE Mich) says:

Sucks to have a 6% sales tax on gas here that doesn’t even go to transportation. =)

  5. Dan says:

Have a great trip Bill! Your Mother sounds like an amazing woman!
Enjoy your time away! It looks like more Thunderstorms for us. I think, it rained all night. I did see the lightning at night also. Hopefully, we can get into a drier pattern, seems as if it has been a very wet spring!

  6. Travis (Oakland County) says:

Bill leaves, and Lower Michigan has one of its most active nights in a long time. Go figure!

Warm and sticky coming up. Although the prediction on here was that May 2013 was going to end up several degrees cooler than May 2012, many spots now have a good shot at surpassing May 2012′s warmth.

I’ll likely finish +5 or +6 degrees above average for May. Two years with early starts to summer. I’ll take it!

    1. DF (SE Mich) says:

At +4.2° there is no way you’ll finish +6° above normal with two days left. Flint is consistently the hottest station around. Everywhere else in lower Michigan is in the +3′s or lower. Marquette is still -4° for May, good for us =)

With record lows and the leaves just completely coming out this week it sure must be a different “summer” up there.

      1. Travis (Oakland County) says:

There are three days left in May not yet figured into the calculation. I was north of +5 only two days ago, so we’ll see where I end up with this heat!

GRR only needs to reach +4.5 to eclipse May 2012.

Also looks like 5 or 6 days right around 90 coming up for early June if this pans out.

        1. fixxxer says:

i wouldn’t call this spring very warm by any means. june doesn’t look any better at this point.

  7. R.J. Stevens says:

Enjoy yourself down there, Bill. My parents used to own a place in the Sevierville/Pigeon Forge area and it certainly is beautiful down there in Tennessee. I love your blog and check it daily. I think it’s pretty clear from the love you have for your job that the vocation you have is certainly the one the good Lord wanted for you! I don’t know of any meteorologist who seems to love their work as much as you. Safe travels!

  8. Jeff (Richland) says:

Last night was pretty wild here. We had a lightning strike so close to my house, deafening thunder – it triped half of the GFI outlets in my house and reset my wall mounted BATTERY OPERATED weather/time station to 1/1 and midnight time, it is NOT PLUGGED INTO THE WALL!! 2.4″ rain total for last 24 hours.

  9. fixxxer says:

that’s a photo of the tornado in byron, michigan yesterday.

  10. fixxxer says:

still a “mystery” how gr managed to get not a darn thing.

  11. Mike (Mattawan) says:

Well we got some good downpours and a GREAT light show last night! I don’t think we will get anything today or tonight, however.

  12. Geneo says:

Fixxer It not a mystery you are the bubble fixxers.

    1. fixxxer says:

yeah because i have a super secret weather machine.

      1. Nathan says:

Then crank it up to high gear because thunderstorms are on the way!

        1. fixxxer says:

          not today there not.

  13. Dan says:

Fixxer isn’t Byron just south of GR?
Also, didn’t a tornado touch down in the Flint area yesterday? That one looked like it was EF3 or close to it. I’m just going on a couple of the pics of the areas that got hit.
Travis: We have had a few cool days. For example, Memorial Day only reached a high of about 52 degrees. We have also had some other cool days in this month.
I think, your calculation is a bit off. Yes, we have a couple of warm days here as May comes to an end!

    1. fixxxer says:

byron, michigan is near flint. not byron center. the photo has been posted all over facebook.

  14. INDY says:

    1. fixxxer says:

better candy than being a drunk with 20 names of shame.

      1. fixxxer says:

        cue that..big daddy ;)

    2. Matt (Spring Lake) says:

Seriously, fixxxer?!?! I could be literally pouring cats and dogs outside, killing everybody….and you’d be like “waaaah, I didn’t see any cows.”

  15. INDY says:

Kids stay away from the blog fixxers on……INDYY..

    1. fixxxer says:

      shouldnt you be at work?

  16. fixxxer says:

im doubting we will hit even the high 70′s today. currently a cool 69 here with solid clouds.

    1. Travis Ulberg (West of Martin, Allegan County) says:

It just got sunny here about 20 mins ago, and the temperature just shot up from 69 to 75 in that time frame.

    2. Travis (Oakland County) says:

      Already 78 here

    3. Mark (East Lansing) says:

      75 here and it’s only 1:20.

      1. fixxxer says:

Do you see any sun today?

        1. Mark (East Lansing) says:

Yes. The sun has come out several times today.

    4. DF (SE Mich) says:

      74° in GR…

    5. Rad (Hudsonville/Jenison) says:

77 here with some sun at times

  17. Dan says:

Oh, he is full of something, that is for sure. Right, fixxxer?! You just must realize how this blog was when fixxxer left permanently. How is that working out for you, fixxxer?

    1. INDY says:

      More candy please!!!!! INDYY..

  18. Travis Ulberg (West of Martin, Allegan County) says:

We never got hit with the severe storms yesterday, but the storms kept developing just to our SW, and ended up going over us. We ended up with 2.48″, with 1.6″ of that coming last night alone. We’ve had 4.38″ since early last week.

  19. Travis (Oakland County) says:

The pictures of the aftermath of one of yesterday’s tornadoes are incredible:

      1. DF (SE Mich) says:

        Thanks for posting the pictures.

My blunt advice to the sprawl of Flint is to take the money and run, turn it back to farmland.

    1. fixxxer says:

I saw the video of the tornado on youtube. It barley looks like one. It just looks like a low lying cloud at times. Must of been heavily rain wrapped.

      1. INDY says:

        WOW U CAN SEE!!!! INDYY..

        1. fixxxer says:

I can your time here is worn out. Dont you have a parking lot to clean up?

  20. blharr44 says:

Down here in Otsego the sun is out and the temp is going up. Does this mean that we are going to destabilize and get more storms today?

    1. fixxxer says:

Not today, no. They claim by the end of the week.

    2. DF (SE Mich) says:

      Ignore the fixxx…

There is definitely a chance. Some storms are already trying to pop up.

      1. INDY says:

        lolololo,,,, 4 sure….INDYY.

      2. fixxxer says:

Yeah we saw how that worked out here yesterday. The chances are very slim for today.

        1. INDY says:

Get out thee IDIOT hat……And have a party…..INDYY.

        2. Mark (East Lansing) says:

NWS GR’s area of responsibility is a tad bit larger than the five-mile radius around your home.

  21. Barry in Zeeland says:

I always find it amusing when during the winter we can have a “watch” or “advisory” 3 days ahead of 2 inches of snow (which impacts almost nothing), and then days like yesterday when you could just “feel” it in the air that something was going to explode, and they don’t issue anything until it’s already on top of people an it’s to late. Can’t say for sure, but I think I’d rather get hit in the head with a snowflake over flying debris or lightning.

  22. Jeff(Northern Ionia County / Muir) says:

Would be cool to get another storm like the one we had in ionia late last night. Lots of lightning thunder and a little rain. But nothing to severe. LOVED IT…

  23. INDY says:

Wow it’s muggy outside I would take last years heat over this mug fest going on in West Michigan….Feels like Texas…..AC is on high and it’s still muggy!! This Should crank up some more good storms tonight…INDYY..

    1. fixxxer says:

Like the “good” storms we had in gr last night?

      1. INDY says:

IDIOT hat gets even BIGGER…..I GUESS!!! INDYY..

        1. Jack says:

          Lol…Are We Having FUN Yet ???? Stay Cued… ;-)

        2. fixxxer says:

So im an idiot for stating the truth? Should i live in never, never land like you?

        3. Mark (East Lansing) says:

Your opinion is not necessarily the truth.

        4. michael g (SE GR) says:

You’re mainly an idiot for being an idiot fix.

  24. Mike Geukes says:

6 Tornadoes confirmed in the NWS Detroit CWA from yesterday.

    1. DF (SE Mich) says:

Nice. EF2 was the max strength, not bad. It should be noted that the six tornadoes do not represent six different storms. I think it was 2 or 3 storms that would drop a tornado every now and then.

    2. Travis (Oakland County) says:

Up to 6 now? Wow. Like I said, it was one for the record books here in Michigan. And yet no Tornado Watch.

Hey Slim, do your data crunching and see when the last time was that we had 6 tornadoes in one day in Lower MI ;)

      1. fixxxer says:

I still say the nws dropped the ball. No excuses.

        1. DF (SE Mich) says:

I agree. If they would have issued a watch after the first tornado warning by me (no touchdown) there was plenty of time before the Flint area tornadoes developed.

        2. Travis (Oakland County) says:

Big time. They often issue Tornado Watches, and we don’t even get a severe storm.

Last nite we had 6 confirmed tornadoes and even more tornado warnings from radar, and yet no watch. That’s like getting two feet of snow without a Winter Storm Watch.

Mother nature wins again. But that’s weather for you and goes to show you how little we still know.

        3. Mark (East Lansing) says:

Their forecasts repeatedly said that tornadoes were possible. Try reading next time.

  25. SlimJim NW GR (1) says:

It’s a cloudy and somewhat humid 75° today. DP is in the mid 60’s so it is just a little humid but not real bad. With all of the rain I will have to cut the grass yet again! And keep a eye out for the pesky mosquitoes. It was asked when was the last time Michigan had 6 or more tornadoes in one day. Well it looks to be not that long ago. On June 5, 2010 lower Michigan had 6 reported tornadoes and two more just after midnight of June 6 for a total of 8 that night. All were along and south of I 94.

And here is a list of the reported tornadoes near Kent County going back to 1950’

    1. Mark (East Lansing) says:

      Nice work, Slim.

    2. fixxxer2012 says:

hell the last time kent even had as much as a tornado warning was june 2009, thats how lackluster our weather is.

      1. Mark (East Lansing) says:

The only thing lackluster in Kent County is your personality.

    3. Travis (Oakland County) says:

Nice work, Slim! So biggest severe day for Lower Michigan in 3 years anyway… as far as tornadoes are concerned.

  26. mr. negative says:

    Storm free…

    1. fixxxer2012 says:

      3 years and counting.

  27. Matt (Spring Lake) says:

Said in my best fixxxy tone: “Oh, poo…I’ve only gotten four inches of rain the past few days and I saw a blade a dead grass in my yard. But now that it’s rained, I have to pull weeds. The storms always miss us, even though I woke up to lightning and thunder last night. I counted the seconds between and the storm missed by a couple miles. We never get thunderstorms. My dog got hit and killed by a chunk of grapefruit sized hair last night. Whhhhhy couldn’t it be watermelon sized? Oh, poo. Sigh….”

    1. fixxxer2012 says:

i see so this is like roast fixxxer day? cool, means ive made one hell of an impression on the blog.

      1. Mark (East Lansing) says:

And you actually said last night that I am the only one annoyed by you. Boy o boy, did you open a can of worms.

  28. Dan says:

The Temp has hit 77 degrees in GR at the airport! Feels as if the storms could fire up. However, Matt already said storms would die tonight.
He said better chances maybe coming again on Fridsy! Feels like Summer outside! Gotta love Michigan weather! Well, all accept for Tornados touching down, GLAD nobody was hurt!!!

    1. fixxxer2012 says:

      77 hardly feels like summer.

      1. Skot says:

YOU are CORRECT sir. its NOT!!! Doc Servance hit the rim shot.

  29. Dan says:

  30. fixxxerswrist says:

master says its all hype, no severe no floods no storms no deaths in the bubble. crap weather its so typical.

    1. fixxxer2012 says:

give it up indy, everyone knows its you.

  31. fixxxer2012 says:

and FYI none of that activity out west will make it here tonight. its heading northeast. ;)

    1. Mark (East Lansing) says:

and FYI not one person here cares what you think.

      1. fixxxer says:

You sound like a jelous schoolgirl. Grow a pair and man up. Its the internet. Quit stalking me. ;)

      2. Mark (East Lansing) says:

ME man up? I’m not the one that promised to never return to the blog. When it’s all said and done, a man only is as good as his word – which speaks volumes about you. You sir, are nothing but a troll. I think your pestering of anyone and everyone on this blog is just a feeble and pathetic attempt for attention. You are a sad little man. I pity you.

        1. Skot says:

          I PITY the Foo’. RRrrrrr….NNNNnnnnnn.

  32. Benjamin (Kalamazoo) says:

Nothing on the radar, however I am hearing thunder and do see a few thunderheads off to the south. Popcorn storms?

  33. Dan says:

That just doesn’t sound right coming from fixxxer! man up and grow a pair, really fixxxer?
Storms are heading for Chicago! To the west of there, they look pretty potent!
I wonder if we get in on some of those “pop up storms?”

    1. fixxxer says:

There weakening and heading more north dan. Dont believe me? Look at the radar. How about for once you stop trying to contridict everything i post.

      1. Mark (East Lansing) says:

Why should he? That’s EXACTLY what you 24/7 here.

  34. Rad (Hudsonville/Jenison) says:

    GO WINGS!!!!

    1. Mark (East Lansing) says:

They can’t lose three in a row, right?

      1. Rad (Hudsonville/Jenison) says:

        I sure hope NOT!

  35. Jerry hoag says:

Hey who thinks that huge line of storms in Wisconsin will hit us????? Maybe a dercho??? Impressive line of storms out there!!! Grand Rapids needs a good storm and this stupid bubble needs to pop NOW!!

    1. Ned S. (Now in South Holland) says:

Not sure where you’re coming from Jerry. We do not need a good storm; we’ve had plenty of rain during the past several days.

    2. Swatz_Zoo(Cedar Springs) says:

I don’t think anything will come over our way, they are moving to N-NE and weakening. I’m ready for a good storm myself, but I never even looked at radar last night because where I’m at storms avoid like the plague and sure enough they were around me just not on me.

      1. Jack says:

        wasup…Swat_Zoo, or should I say “Bubbles”……. ;-) . Stay Cued….. ;-)

    3. ~Sandy~ from DeWitt/Clinton County says:

      THIS TIME.

    1. ~Sandy~ from DeWitt/Clinton County says:

That’s a great overview map of the damage. Non-tornadic winds can do a LOT of damage!

    2. Cort S. says:

Small clarification: This is preliminarily considered non-tornadic winds. The EF scale is a wind speed scale estimated by damage, so it can be applied to straight-line winds also.

  36. Harry (Battle Creek) says:

    Thanks, Mike.

Looks like our weather could get interesting on Friday, maybe a little tomorrow after 2PM. we’ll see what happens.

  37. Bob P. says:

    Have a Great Time Bill!

  38. Barry in Zeeland says:

Good grief, I think I’m going to have a stroke watching the Wings game. Game 7, overtime, how much tighter can it get?

    1. Barry in Zeeland says:

      …..and they lose.

      1. Brian(Grandville) says:

It was a great run. Time to focus on next season now.

  39. David (Flowerland) says:

    Hi Bill,

Wave a Hi to my family in Richmond Ky. 2 Sisters and Parents live their.

    Enjoy your time off!

  40. Yup (Grandville) says:

So, about the weather today. Where did everybody go? I see some storms popping to the East of GR.

  41. Kevin (Marshall) says:

Around .1 inches of rain in 10 minutes just south of Marshall. Wind gusts around 20 mph. No hail and little in the way of lightning.

  42. SlimJim NW GR (1) says:

Here we are on the last day of May 2013 and believe it or not there are still some snow piles left in Houghton, MI

Check out the time lapse over the past month or more.
Also it should be noted that here in GR we will end May of 2013 well above average temp wise but cooler then last year and with more rain then last year. I added 0.33” of rain here last night and now have a temp of 66° with clearing taking place off to the west so will have to see how much sun and how warm we get today.
