June 17th, 2013 at 2:33 pm by under Bill's Blog, Weather

Hail Jeff Smith S. Fremont June 17 2013 cloud erin Wagner Rockford  T-Storms caused scattered wind damage, hail and a couple of funnel clouds Monday PM.  Funnel clouds were reported on the north side of Mt. Pleasant (The Isabella Co. Emergency Manager followed the storm and  reported the rotation stopped, so a tornado warning was not issued) and just west of Saginaw.  A 68-mph gust recorded by a handheld anemometer near Vicksburg.  There was some branches down there.  Gusts hit 60 mph at Stony Lake in Oceana Co., where a few trees were toppled.  Gusts up to 50 mph were reported just west of Belding.  Wind damage was reported at near Coldwater and Sherwood in Branch County and at Leonidas in St. Joseph County.  1″ diameter hail fell in Solon Township in N. Kent Co., with 1/2″ hail north of Whitehall and in Alpine Township.  Pea-sized hail was reported in Portage and from two different storms in Mt. Pleasant.  3/8″ hail in S. Alpine Township.  Pic. on left by Jeff Smith is hail just south of Fremont.  Pic. on the right by Erin Wagner is the dark clouds of the storm moving south over Rockford.    A report of tree down on power lines on Long Lake Dr near Sparta.  Ronald St. in Cedar has a tree down on wires. Perhaps a broken power pole too.   Tree down on White Lake, between 16 and 17 mile Rds., blocking the road.   Law enforcement reports multiple trees down over the road at the 7200 block of Blue Lake Rd. and White Lake rd.  Some dead tree branches and bird feeders were blown down 4 miles NNW of Whitehall, along with blueberry-sized hail.  There was a gust to 42 mph 2 miles SW of Shelby.     In the eastern part of the state, golfball-sized hail was reported at Montrose,  and Shields MI and near Davison, Clio and Flint.  A second storm produced hail to 1-inch in Saginaw Co.  Hail up to 2″ in diameter was reported in E. Wisconsin.  Here’s storm reports from W. Michigan, E. Michigan and NE Wisconsin.

  3. Barry in Zeeland(Currently in Pentwater) says:

We watched the cell come over lake Michigan about 2 hours ago and it was just south of us. Man I wish I had my camera with me because it was the coolest looking double shelf cloud out in front of it. We could see the water, then clear sky, a long shelf cloud out in front of the storm, more clear sky, then a shorter shelf cloud just above the other one. The contrasts in colors and the darkness of the storm were just incredible to see from out on the disc golf course. We had some thunder right above us and a few minutes of light rain, but everything else was well south of us.

  4. INDY says:

Left thee grill cover off after dinnner tonight can’t wait for thee rain to clean it up!! INDYY..

  5. Nathan (Forest Hills) says:

    Awesome looking clouds!!

  6. Kevin(Rockford) says:

Just missed it by a few miles…took some pics of the shelf cloud from a distance. Wind picked up and got a pic of a rainbow, strange looking at such black sky with the sun out

  7. Kevin(Rockford) says:

    dropped temp to 73

  8. INDY says:

Muskegon has a good storm rolling in should give Grand Rapids a windy rain out of it and a loud boom!!! INDYY……..

  9. Paul says:

I wish someone at WOOD TV 8 would move the radar out so we can see the storm off from Muskegon.

  10. INDY says:

Bill just had a wind gust of 47mph out thee YARDofBRICKS must be a dwon draft from the storm to my north INDYY…..

  11. Bruno (Northview H.S.) says:

WOW!!! Got real windy real fast… how is it at your house Indy? You should be getting the same wind :) you are that close to me :)

    1. INDY says:

Down drafts from thee storm I hope our power don’t go out!!! INDYY..

      1. Bruno (Northview H.S.) says:

        Lol…. me too :)

  12. fixxxer says:

It amazes me how all of these cells just fizzle out so consistantly but flourish over by detroit. Suppose were capped AGAIN. Oh well…its not like we need anymore rain.

    1. Cort S. says:

No, not much to do with a cap today. Just less instability downwind of Lake Michigan. The storm shredder. Still marginally severe wind gusts in West Michigan, so it’s not a total bust.

      1. INDY says:

LOL u tell him cort … Again What a IDIOT!! INDYY..

        1. Cort S. says:

I’m not out to destroy the poor guy, though, as long as he plays nice. Can you play nice too?

        2. Stephen (North Muskegon) says:

Yeah cmon Indy Fixxer has been very nice surprisingly on the blog lately cut him some slack man!

      2. Swatz_Zoo(Cedar Springs) says:

I agree, let’s all be kind to one another, “Love thy neighbor” ;-)

  13. Swatz_Zoo(Cedar Springs) says:

LOL, short lived blue sky showing now. But it was nice what I got, I don’t think really needed to be warned but some areas probably got it worse.

    1. Cort S. says:

Ronald St in Cedar has a tree down on wires. Perhaps a broken power pole too. Sounds like a several isolated wind damage reports across northern Kent County. Likely not severe in most places, but pretty close in a few spots. At least you got a storm and some pictures! Hooray!

      1. Swatz_Zoo(Cedar Springs) says:

Yes I did! I’ll take what I can get! Wondering if that cell in Muskegon will amount to much and if it will intensify. GORGEOUS rainbow, slight double one at that too!

        1. Cort S. says:

Hey! Your luck finally changed! Maybe this is a turning point! Or maybe you’ve burned it all for the rest of the summer. :)

        2. Swatz_Zoo(Cedar Springs) says:

ROFL knowing my luck this was my 1st and last storm of the season.

  14. Cort S. says:

20 Mile & Red Pine Dr. got 1-inch hail. That’s pretty much where the best hail core collapse was on radar too.

    1. Swatz_Zoo(Cedar Springs) says:

I thought it looked more intense north of me, but hey I’m happy I got my appetizer now I want my main course, LOL!!

      1. Kevin(Rockford) says:

share please….I missed that last one by 2-3 miles

        1. Swatz_Zoo(Cedar Springs) says:

I would if I could, but the appetizer was small and only left me even more hungry for the main course ;-)

  15. INDY says:

Muskegon Storm has strong winds with it more T- Storm Warnings coming….

    1. Cort S. says:

The storm looks pretty weaksauce compared to the previous one. No real hail core to speak of, and I think the lower levels have stabilized somewhat from the outflow of the first storm.

    2. Paul says:

      No such luck INDY…

  16. Drew Morrison says:

Crazy looking cell, taken 8 pm at Standale Plaza on Lake Michigan Drive. Just wanted to share.

  17. kevin. w says:

I think with the ridge out west I feel will have one big northwest to southeast MCS complex or derecho event coming. I think it will come in July because the way the models are showing some heat building just to our west right around the first week of July it looks like a good possibility this year and I think its going to be long damaging event starting in Minnesota and going almost to the east coast….will see.

    1. INDY says:

Yeaaa Thee ring of fire has been good this summer and its only going to get better with heat coming…..Kevin u are on to a Derecho coming!! INDYY.

  18. Barry in Zeeland(Currently in Pentwater) says:

Wow, now we just had a full and brilliant double rainbow across the lake from us. Took lots of pictures of that, but I don’t have my cables to upload them to the computer along. Sure is nice to get out of the Ottawa County bubble and actually see some cool things!

  19. Uncle Sparkee says:

Your ol uncle sparks will play nice with P and fixx. You all big city lights send both those boys my way and they will learn why you don’t live with ma all your god givin life, and what it takes to survive. Tokes will teach manners and how to track the varmints and your ol uncle sparks will teach em all about GUN CONTROL….. That’s holdin the gun with two hands!!

    1. Liz says:

What if anything does this have to do with a weather discussion? I’ve been following Bill’s blog for quite sometime and am constantly discouraged with folks bashing each other. I am all for free speech but there is a time & place. I appreciate Cort trying to keep the discussions about weather and learning from him. I am not addressing this post specifically to Uncle Sparkee but all of you who use this blog for your non-weather related posts, bantering and bashing. I certainly hope there isn’t a young person out there reading this blog to learn about weather and comes across some of the inappropriate verbiage I’ve seen on here. Thanks to Bill all of you who provide us information about the weather as I’ve learned many things.

  20. SBPortage002 says:

Storm strengthening right by here (Portage). Nice thunder claps and breezy.

    1. SBPortage002 says:

Looks like southern Kalamazoo county is getting a good storm right now.

  21. Travis (Oakland County) says:

Dang, two severe storms again today! Second one had 60 mph winds and 0.75″ hail where I am.

Took some awesome pics I’ll have to share. The clouds had definite rotation and the hail shaft was visible along with green/blue sky.

    1. Nathan (Forest Hills) says:

Yea Travis your getting so many storms! My aunt says she had about .5 inch hail as well and she is located in Flint.

  22. Nathan (Forest Hills) says:

CRAZY lightning strikes and clouds heading my way!!

  23. Kevin(Rockford) says:

Watched one go to the north of me and one to the west of me by mere miles. Getting some rain out of the second one.

  24. INDY says:

Nice storm over thee YARDofBRICKS!!! What a nice start to a stormy summer way better then last years hot waether,,,,,,INDYY….

  29. Sue (Belmont) says:

Getting a nice thunderstorm here in Belmont. Heavy rain a few minutes ago.

  30. Resourceful Nana says:

Took about three minutes for wind to go from calm to strong–just guessing 60 mph range by the way everything blew around. Lasted about 10 minutes. Now, light rain, lightening in the area (northern St. Joseph County, MI), no hail, wind has subsided. Gotta send this quick before I lose the satellite again.

    1. Yup (Grandville) says:

      Good pic Kevin!

    2. Mark (East Lansing) says:

      Great shot Kevin.

  31. SBPortage002 says:

  34. fixxxer says:

  35. Kevin (Msrshall) says:

Was at Shamrock Hills golf course last night north of Gobles, and we were on the north side of a cell as it started storming. Just a few sprinkles there and lighning to the south. Had a really bright rainbow with a not so bright second rainbow. Was glad that we’d finished leagues.
