Northern Lights Tonight??

KP Index    The kp index is up to 7 at 2:15 AM.  Seeing Aurora in MN, MI, WI, IA, ND, SD, MT.    From www.spaceweather.com “A  (Kp=7) geomagnetic storm is underway around the poles. Solar wind conditions favor auroras at high latitudes, although in the northern hemisphere solstice twilight will sharply reduce visibility.”   With a five, you might catch a faint aurora on the northern horizon if you are away from artificial light.  Wed like that number to be around 7-8 for a better show.  Still it’s worth watching.  Keep checking the link at spaceweather.com and scroll down and look at the kp number on the left side.     Bonus pictures here and here.

Remeber the KP index is only updated every couple hours so your looking at past history, not always the current index. I’ve still found the best predicting site to be http://www.softservenews.com/Aurora.htm as it gives a fairly good estimate what the kp will be at in the future. Hope we get a good burst tonight!

    1. Bill Steffen says:

That’s pretty far south…we’re getting some views in parts of Michigan here, well away from city lights. Part of the Great Lakes is cloudy now.

        1. Bill Steffen says:

First, hope for clear skies…then the farther north the better and away from artificial light.

I went outside cause I was having an anxiety attack and got to witness them, some of the best I’ve seen in a long time actually. Sat outside with the dog for about an hour watching.

From Marne…sorry I didn’t look for the Aurora. Worked to long and too tired to walk outside. Looking like a Great Warm week ahead. Love it !!!

  9. Gun Lake Deb says:

No luck with a clear space in the clouds and me being awake! The Auroras are an amazing sight.

  10. SlimJim NW GR (1) says:

The best Auroras I have ever seen were in the UP in around 1967. We were camping in Brimley and the sight of the lights over Whitefish bay was outstanding.
It’s a pleasantly cool morning here with a temp of 61° Looks like we will have a good week or so of “don’t have to weather” that is don’t have to have the air on nor do you have to have the heat on! If not for the expected showers it will also be a good week to get outside and do what ever. So enjoy!

Would it have had anything to do with my DirecTv satellite signal “crumbling” last night around 10? Skies were cloudy, but calm with most of the weather activity seeming to have passed. Just curious. Thanks….

Never fails!!! Had nothing but clouds, couldn’t see a thing if i wanted to!!
