Snow in Brazil  Check out this link for news of snow in S. Brazil…for some places the first snow in over 40 years!  I’ve mentioned before that METSUL in Brazil is the best group of meteorologists in the S. Hemisphere.   I got this off google translater:  “An event never to forget! Memorable! 22 and 23 July 2013 entered definitely into the history of weather in southern Brazil. In an era that remain about global warming and experts even so far as to suggest a tropicalization South of Brazil, the three southern states were hit by snow and cold episode as seldom seen in the last half century. Scenes and unusual factsroadblocks by loads of snow / ice, or collapsing roofs by heavy snowfalls.  Survey of Meteorology MetSul based on own calculation and data Ciram, Simepar and the National Institute of Meteorology, indicates that it snowed in at least 140 cities in southern Brazil. In Rio Grande do Sul snowed in at least 20 municipalities between Monday (22) and today (23). In Santa Catarina, survey by Epagri / Ciram indicated more than 90 cities. And in the state of Paraná, found the Institiuto Simepar, snow was observed in at least 30 counties. Besides snow in Paraguay and the province of Misiones in Argentina, there were reports of snow up in the town of Paranhos, Mato Grosso do Sul in the Center-West region of Brazil, where locals say that the phenomenon was not observed for more than 40 years.  (picture courtesy of METSUL blog- click on the link to enlarge).  Lots of amazing pictures at this this link.

Here’s pictures of lightning in London and a couple of fires started by the lightnings.

Imagine that, a snowstorm where it is winter right now, amazing. Nice try Bill, we are on to you that you think most of your bloggers are too dumb to know its winter in the southern Hemisphere right now. Oh wow snow in Brazil, the amazon, oh what a calamity, lets all get our bibles out and pray!

    1. michael g (SE GR) says:

So the fact that it is the first snow in 40 years in some of those places does nothing for you?

      1. Mike (Shepherd, MI) says:

The latitude in Brazil that is snowed are the equivalent of getting snow in Miami in the northern hemisphere. I would say that is pretty amazing.

        1. Rogério Penna says:

But it snows EVERY year in these latitudes in Brazil. However, its never so widespread (number of cities). Also, it hardly hits coastal areas (like Florianopolis) and other sea level cities. But towns at 1000-1500m height range are always hit by snow at latitude 28-30S Brazil.

Anyway, compared to the snowstorm records from the 19th century and early 20th century in southern Brazil, even this last snowfall was STILL quite light.

    2. Cliff (Scotts) says:

Hey mike how about you google it before you bash Bill, you will see how rare this is. Go hug a tree

    3. DF (SE Mich) says:

Do you not see the palm trees in the picture? Lol…
