Coast Guard Festival Wrap

<–Grand Haven fireworks above Dewey Hill. Photo by Stacy Niedzwiecki. I was  at  Grand Haven all day Saturday for the Coast Guard Festival. I joined Matt Kirkwood, Emily Linnert, and Brett Thomas in the big Meijer Parade.  I actually rode thru the parade a second time with the AWESOME Grand Haven Science Olympiad Team.  Grand Haven has won state and even national Science Olympiad competition…over many years.  They have a terrific program.  I made a brief appearance at the big show (“The Company Men“) at the Waterfront in the evening before the fireworks.  They usually send up about 5,500 shells, so it’s one of the best fireworks shows in the Midwest.  If anyone shot video of the fireworks, you might want to send it to us at ReportIt (and maybe put it up on YouTube).  Remember, a better way to get to Grand Haven on Coast Guard Festival Saturday from Grand Rapids is to take M-45 west to US 31…and better yet is to take M-45 to 144th Ave. north to Mercury Drive.  If you do come down I-96, get off at the Eastmanville exit and get south of the river.  You can usually get right into town on Mercury Dr. and avoid the stop and go.  I usually park just on the east side of US 31 and make a quick exit out of town back down Mercury Drive.  Side note: Remember when Dewey Hill caught fire in 2005? That was a very dry year.  Thanks to all who said “hi” to me and a special thanks to the men and women of the Coast Guard.

Also, check out the picture of lighting in Tampa Bay, the first sunset since May at Barrow, Alaska and this lady’s had the same car for 56 years.  There’s still a small patch of ice left in Hudson Bay in the first week of August.

The traffic and the parking for the coast guard festival is atrocious!

    1. SlimJim NW GR (1) says:

yes it is. I wonder if the festival organizers ever thought of using busses or something and have people park outside of town and bus people into town????

I grew up there and went for 40 years straight, though I haven’t been in probably 10 years, but still have family in Grand Haven/Spring Lake. I know that they have shuttles, I’m just not sure where they are anymore.

        1. jay says:

Yes they do from Harbor Island and From Trinity Ref. church on Ferry. and some other sites…

Is there anything that his guy doesn’t whine about?

      1. Rocky (Rockford) says:

Now that is funny – are you related to fixxxer?

        1. Paul says:

No, hell no. You just complain too much, complain to your wife instead, lol.

Hope everyone has a good time at the Festival. We have only went twice and have yet to see the fireworks we did try one year but not only got caught in the traffic came but also could not find a parking space (and that was several years ago)

The GR NWS come out with this bit of info on how unusual this current cool spell is for this this time of year.

And with the forecast of several more days of under 80 we could move up into the top 5 for the longest stretch of below 80° days for this time of year. Now if we can have a record stretch of +60° days in January/February then that will make up of this…But right now its more like we have been moved to the UP near Lake Superior.
After some fog this AM its now sunny here looks like it should be a nice day if on the cool side.

The cool last week of July coupled with Joe B’s forecast of a cool August and warm September could mean a 10 week stretch with highs between 70* and 80* most of the time. Hard to beat that!

My older brother is going there tonight for a college party… He has never driven on the expressways before. Do you see a problem there?

    1. Brian(Grandville) says:

if you plan on leaving right after fireworks good luck. I tried that years ago, and it took me an hour just to get out of town. Sounds like a mess out there already.

      1. Bill Steffen says:

I’m coming from Alpine Twp. I take I-96 west, but get off at Coopersville (68th St.) and go south across the Grand River, then west to 144th and then north to Mercury Dr. I turn left on Robbins road and get into town without a stop.

I park on the east side of US31 on Columbus. Today we found open spots when 5 PM Mass got out at St. Patrick’s. Then I head south to Robbins Road and back Mercury Dr. the same way we came. No traffic delays at all.

Fireworks, are so beautiful! I think, I once saw the hill there burn on the 4th! What a riot! I hope lives were safe. What does the weather look like for this week? I saw some 70s, some 80s. Can we hit 85? It seems summer is passing by. Soon it will be fall! In fall, it does not get to 80 as much. So, I think we are done with 90! For this year. Will it storm again soon? It is quiet here. How about the Tigers! Mad Max for the win! Stay cued!

    1. Jack says:

YTD… Stay CUED???? That there IS PLAGIARISM !!!!! ;-)

    2. Clarence says:

Who is Mad Max? Is he another cheater like Pete Rose or Sammy Sosa or Cecil Fielder ?

      1. Brian (Grandville) says:

Pete Rose didn’t cheat, he just bet on games.

      2. YeahThatDan says:

You must not like, baseball! Mad Max is 16-1! Go Tigers! Or, do you not like Detroit? We are Tigers fans here! Celebrating a great season! Go TIGERS!

  11. Clarence says:

Coast guard festival is for all the white kids who are rich and care mostly about getting drunk and setting fires and having sex with tons of women. I love the idea of festivals, and prefer the flower festival in the Dutch part of this state. That is a beautiful time in this state for weather and nature and good people who work hard and treat people with respect. I was surprised that they treated my black family really well every time we went and fished out of their lakes and ponds and the big lake even.

This weather is great for festivals and I hope it continues. Things are great with weather and with my now separated family. It is nice to have bill and his followers support and at least are here for us all! Thanks Bill!

  12. Matt (Spring Lake) says:

Bill, it was great getting to meet you at the Waterfront and to chat for 15 minutes!
