Tropical Storm Erin

August 15th, 2013 at 12:35 pm by under Bill's Blog, Weather

TC Activity Tropical Storm Erin has formed west of Africa, moving to the west/west-northwest. It’s a minimal storm and shouldn’t get to major hurricane status. It’s going to be fighting dry air. Here’s the discussion on the storm from the National Hurricane Center and the projected path of Erin.  There is also a disturbed (hatched) area of showers and storms near the Yucatan Peninsula of Mexico.  That area will move north and provide more rain to the U.S. Gulf Coast this weekend.  It may get breezy, but this area will not intensify to hurricane. status.

Well trough is going away in the east, the tropics are lighting up, summers making a come back one last time, wholesale gas prices are up, precious metals are way up, stocks are down, more turmoil in the middle east, and the jobs markets for July hiring sucked. SO I’m hearing of a couple price hikes coming from CNBC, my brother in law (whos in the oil business) and the general news channels and of course why wouldn’t we get a hike…the holiday weekend is just around the corner. The AO, NAO are both way positive probably stay that way through September but I’m looking at an unsettled October and especially November once the tropics shut off and we reestablish the trough in the east. Can anyone say white thanksgiving.

Filled up for 3.32 here last nite. Never did get that spike Bill mentioned earlier.

We haven’t had an early winter in a long time. Too early to tell for now. Right now, it’s looking a lot like the past couple years with a warm end of August and September.

      1. DF (SE Mich) says:

Nice! Everything spiked up to $3.60′s here.

      2. Mark (East Lansing) says:

Good thing you don’t live in Flint. Their prices range from $3.48 to $3.63.

    2. SlimJim NW GR (1) says:

There are some similarities to 2004 this year and that year we had just over 10 inches of snow in November
But I would not get to carried away on that just yet.

  3. kevin. w says:

Looks like the CPC is forecasting a pretty wet fall/early winter on this map:

  4. michael g (SE GR) says:

Erin is another example of a storm that never would have been noticed or counted in the pre-satellite era, leading to inflated counts in recent decades.

  5. Tom S Holland says:

Yeah…we implemented changes to the web site this afternoon around 2 PM. This was a corporate change. I haven’t looked through it all yet. Feedback is good…though you’d probably want to email the station, so I was not involved in the changes. One thing I did notice is that photo gallery at ReportIt seems to have disappeared. You can still send us your photos and videos to ReportIt here: If you have a cool nature/weather/lake photo you want to email it also to me at I do appreciate people like Jack, Tom, Ted, Stacy and others who have let me use their wonderful pictures on the blog.

Woke up to an earthquake here in Santiago last night. A 5.0, which is very noticeable. Chile gets a lot of earthquakes as there have been a dozen at a 5.0 or higher in the past year. Would appreciate someone sending down some of that fresh Northern Michigan air as Santiago has quite a bit of smog as the Andes box things in.

Looks like the Lions picked up where they left off last year. Several senseless penalties. I’m putting it all on the coach from now on. You’re on a short leash now Jim.
