Local  The Flash Flood Warning for Calhoun Co. is over.  Around 2″ of rain and some local flooding of intersections in Battle Creek.  Radar estimates up to 2.5″ of rain just outside of Battle Creek this afternoon.  Ceresco reported 2.01″ of rain, giving them over 6″ for August.  Flooding was reported along Dickman Rd., esp. around Upton.  Water was shooting 2 feet out of sewer grates on Forest.   Muskegon has just had a trace of rain.   Ray in Oshtemo reported 0.63″ of rain.   Richland added 1.1″ for an August total of 6.35″.   Here’s more rainfall totals from last night.  Norton Shores the big winner with 1.68″. Other totals: 1.47″ Stony Lake, 1.37 N Sullivan (MKG Co.),  1.00″ Whitehall, 0.91 Scottville, 0.85 Benton Harbor, 0.73 Hastings (very localized there), 0.41″ Hudsonville, 0.27″ Sparta and Belding.  Everyone else was pretty much under 1/4″.  Grand Rapids and Kalamazoo officially had 0.10″.  Wind gusts hit 65 mph in the Grand Haven Channel and 60 mph on the beach at Muskegon.  Holland St. Park had a gust to 56 mph.  We are only in the SPC General Thunderstorm Outlook for this PM and severe weather here is unlikely.  Milwaukee NWS reported one tree down in Jefferson WI and a few wind gusts to 40-50 mph…mostly just much needed rain. .

Ended up with .22″ in Zeeland. Nice light show last night!

  2. SlimJim NW GR (1) says:

For the most part last nights storm missed my area. As here I only received 0.11” of rain not much wind. There were a few (not all that many) good flashes of lightning and even fewer rumbles of thunder. So bottom line here is that its still on the dry side here. Cloudy and 66° here this morning.

    1. Rocky (Rockford) says:

Exactly what I predicted for GR.

  3. Travis (Oakland County) says:

Phew hit 90 here yesterday. Traverse City hit 91 – that’s 14 degrees above average for them.

Hottest I saw was 93 up north in Indian River.

    1. DF (SE Mich) says:

+13° when you factor in the night ;)
      I bet they loved it.

Only 87° down here yesterday, it is entertaining to see the hot air wrap around from the north and west.

      1. Travis (Oakland County) says:

I know I still don’t get why that really happens.

Here’s the cool temperature site I use from NWS. Also has a check box for max temps past 24 hours.

        1. Mark (East Lansing) says:

Get what? Why it’s warmer in certain areas and cooler in others?

    2. Mark (East Lansing) says:

I few more days like that and we just may reach the average temperature for the month.

  4. Rocky (Rockford) says:

Imagine that it never hit 90 degrees or higher in GR this week and we have a great rest of the week and weekend on tap. Some heat wave? Who knew? Travis and all of his warm weather hype is WRONG again! We have had temps in the mid 80′s with very comfortable nights! Travis and his global warming and warm weather hype is a joke and 100% WRONG again!!

    1. Travis (Oakland County) says:

Wow, so much hate out of this anonymous blogger on a weather forum.

For the record, GR officially hit 89 – not mid 80′s. With 90 degrees expected multiple times next week.

      1. Rocky (Rockford) says:

        Blah, blah, blah. More BS!

        1. fixxxer says:

          Go stuff it rj.

        2. Mark (East Lansing) says:

          Sit on it, Potsie.

    2. DF (SE Mich) says:

It does look hot next week Dan, maybe you should calm down a bit to reduce the quotes Travis will repost next week :)

      1. DF (SE Mich) says:

        Whoops, Rocky*

    3. Rodey (Rockford) says:

Just like you and all your snowstorm and cold weather hype whuch never pans out. What a joke. Total failure. Who knew. I love it. Get used to it. Fantastic.

  5. Imthemom (just n holland) says:

We had about 1/2 inch here. Greened the grass up great. Didn’t see any Barn Swallows this morning. I wonder if they are using the cold front to help their flight south?

  6. INDY says:

Travis we get it it!!! Summers get warm around Michigan !!! INDYY

    1. Slimjim says:

Summers can have a few warm days in Michigan. For the most part summers are very nice here.
      Slimjim

  7. Slimjim says:

BTW, while it missed 90 at the airport yesterday I did reach 91 here at my house. But with a nice breeze it still was not all that bad. And the DP’s were only in the low to mid 60′s so while somewhat humid it still was not all that bad.
    Slimjim

  8. mr. negative says:

SE GR – 1/10 of an inch of storm free rain

  9. Swatz_Zoo(Cedar Springs) says:

Got garden variety storm but still nice to see lightning and hear a few rumbles of thunder, got a nice 1/2in of rain though

  10. dano (Norton Shores) says:

Almost 1.5″ of rain here with winds around midnight last night. Knocked my power until 9 this morning.

  11. Scott (robinson twsp) says:

Hey anyone have info on Timmers Tornado trucks at Todd Wenzell today?

    1. Bill Steffen says:

We will welcome the team and the Dominator 2 back to our dealership on Thursday August 22nd from 12-3pm at Todd Wenzel GMC! Click here for directions. In the meantime you can view more Storm Chasers photos at our Todd Wenzel Automotive Facebook Page.

  12. Meagan says:

    Hi Bill,
Where on the Wood TV 8 webpage is the current written forecast? I liked when you guys did a video, but then also had it written out for people to read. Where did it go? :( :(

      1. Meagan says:

It’s not a written out forecast, though… It is only a daily view of each day… I am looking for a detailed forecast for the day of today… I went to WZZM 13 and they have their written forecast like WOOD TV used too. Very frustrating for me.

        1. Rocky (Rockford) says:

Also WZZM 13 does a much better job with a specific daily wind forecast. I wish TV 8 included that as well!

        2. Mark (East Lansing) says:

Ah, I see what you mean now.

        3. fixxxer says:

Then by all means leave here rj and go bug them on their blog. Take indy, mark and mike with you to. ;)

        4. Michael g (se gr) says:

That’s “too” Mark. Get with it.

  13. Jim S.(Saugatuck Twp) says:

0.18 here last night. Looks like more than I anticipated on the way.

  14. Kevin(Rockford) says:

0.23 here. I’ll take what I can get but…more please. 0.65 for the month of August.

  15. INDY says:

Wow fixer can read!!! 3rd grade starts in a week…..INDYY

    1. Mark (East Lansing) says:

      Held back again, huh?

    2. Rocky (Rockford) says:

I would not be so sure about that. I do not think that he can read above a second grade level, much less have an intelligent conversation. He is a whining, complaining wimp!

    3. fixxxer says:

Yeah and i make more than minimum wage. Ya know i dont push carts all day.

  16. marianne says:

woohoo!!! rain on the way….hurray love it!

  17. Zach says:

New mesodiscussion for severe weather potential….. including Southwest Michigan

    1. DF (SE Mich) says:

      Legitimate link:
      http://www.spc.noaa.gov/products/md/md1752.html

At least it is actually for Michigan…

    2. fixxxer says:

      Not today lol..

  18. Kevin (Marshall) says:

Last night they were predicting all the rain would move out by late afternoon. Now it looks like this afternoon will be a total washout.

    1. Kevin (Marshall) is Dead On says:

I heard the same thing last night. Made plans to go boating around GR late afternoon because I heard the rain would stay south of I-94. Not sure if that’s going to happen.

    2. Rocky (Rockford) says:

      interesting point!

  19. Cort S. says:

There is a Mesoscale Convective Vortex (MCV) that is driving these thunderstorms. It’s a type of meso-low that can form in the wake of a line of storms. You can see it spinning on the MKX radar:
    http://weather.cod.edu/satrad/nexrad/index.php?type=MKX-N0Q-1-48

    1. Mark (East Lansing) says:

Very interesting. As always, thanks for enlightening us laypersons.

  20. cindy (wyoming) says:

Is the rader down? Having a dickens of a time with this new format.

  21. Red in Allegan Co. says:

Getting some nice thunder rumbles down this way.

  22. Nathan (Forest Hills) says:

I thought it was only supposed to rain in the morning?

    1. Nathan (Forest Hills) says:

Which is too bad because now that messes up our road construction today… I guess they wont do any! It is a new technology and requires dry conditions…

  23. Rain is just teasing me. Looks like I will be right on the border line. Southern counties are the winner winner chicken dinner for the rain today as they usually seem to be this year.

  24. Jeff Northern Ionia County says:

Looks like the rain is going to squeeze just south of me today.

  25. Brad (Van Buren) says:

Rain rain and…..wait for it…More rain. Yup we are the winners today. Depends on who you are though. :P

  26. SS (Pwell Area) says:

Heavy rain a little bit ago. Hearing thunder again!!!

    1. GunLakeDeb says:

LOL!! It’s literally sliding just south of me. Not a drop here – and only a tenth of an inch last night. Glad I watered all my flowers yesterday – Mother Nature isn’t going to do it for me, I guess…..

      1. SS (Pwell Area) says:

        Raining really hard here!!!

        1. GunLakeDeb says:

Your thunder sounds close!! We’ve had enough mist to dampen the parking lot – does that count?? LOL!!!!!!

        2. SS (Pwell Area) says:

          Sounds close here!!!LOL!!!

  27. Jerrod (Hartford) says:

Nice heavy rain, probably around an inch and still raining hard. Very little wind (gusts up to 25-30 mph) and little in the way of thunder and lightning.

Anybody else having trouble with the NWS radars right now? They seem to be 20-30 minutes behind. I know GRR radar was down for about 6 hours this morning.

  28. Kevin (Marshall) says:

Aerial flood warning for Calhoun and Kalamazoo counties. Looks like another 1 to 2 inches of rain for Marshall today.

    1. GunLakeDeb says:

“Aerial flood warning” – LOL!! That one took me a moment to figure out :-)

  29. Trace amount of rain fell in Byron Center from that area of rain. At least we got SOMETHING!

  30. John says:

Flash flood warning for Calhoun County

  31. Battle Creek- i94 says:

Dickmand Rd heading east in Battle Creek is one lane, other is flooded. Forest St has 2 storm rains pushing water 2 feet in the air, then draining onto Dickman. I assume they are not the only 2 drains doing it around town.

  32. Kevin (Marshall) says:

Marshall has somehow lucked out so far. Only 2/10 of an inch so far (knock on wood).

  33. Ben Lamfers says:

Jenison Bauer and Briarwood, vicinity, had .10 inches last night.

It was let down to say the least, some thunder and lightning, little rain. We are thankful that we had no severe storms last night.

  34. Paul (Yankee Springs-Barry State Game Area) says:

Just a trace here today in the woods, and .09 overnight……just missed us to the south today…..

  35. fixxxer says:

High & dry…just a typical cloudy day here.

    1. Nathan says:

Winter time: cold and snowy… Just a typical cloudy day here.
Summer time: hot and dry… Just a typical cloudy day here.
      All year: cloudy
Technically we have more sun than clouds in the summer, so it isn’t that usual for this time of year

  36. Kevin (Marshall) says:

Total rainfall just sorh of Marshall: 3/10 inch for the day.

  37. kevin. w says:

Weather pattern change around or just after Labor day weekend as the whole northern hemisphere will be realigning itself again with another blocking pattern. I bet the NAO will go negative again and it will get stormy and cooler.

    1. Michael g (se gr) says:

Sounds great. I’m still expecting a warmer than normal September though.

  38. Cliff(Scotts) says:

.4 tenths in Scotts, good amount don’t need anymore fields where still wet from rain week ago. Couple miles north got a lot more, not good for the crops when that happens.

  39. Brad (Van Buren) says:

Hey Bill, with this front slowly moving thru, will the humidty break at all? I’m getting kinda tired of high humidity, kinda takes the spark outta ya when your trying to get things done outside.

    1. Nathan (Forest Hills) says:

It will be 77% tonight but drop to 56% tomorrow after the front moves through the CWA… So yes, some relief!

  40. Chad roosevelt park says:

Roosevelt park 1.8 last night is the big winner.

  41. Rad ( Jenison / Hudsonville ) says:

Common DET. Save some for the reg. Season :/

  42. .30 inches of rain for Byron Center from last night and today. I’ll take it

  43. Jack says:
