Chance T-Storm Late Tuesday

October 14th, 2013 at 2:36 pm by under Bill's Blog, Weather

day1otlk_sm   This is the T-Storm Outlook from the Storm Prediction Center for Tuesday PM/Night.  Michigan is “in the green”, which means all of us have a chance of a thunderstorm.    SPC says:  “A FEW TSTMS WILL BE POSSIBLE AMIDST AN INCREASINGLY SHEARED KINEMATIC ENVIRONMENT…WEAK LAPSE RATES…WIDESPREAD CLOUDS…AND MARGINAL MOISTURE CONTENT WILL RESULT IN QUITE LIMITED AIR MASS DESTABILIZATION. AS SUCH…NO SEVERE WEATHER IS EXPECTED.”

We will likely have a similar situation to what we had Saturday evening. with a band of showers and a few t-storms coming in from Lake Michigan from mid-afternoon into the evening.  This set-up looks a little better than Saturday.  Lake Michigan is quite warm for mid-October.  As I write this, the mid-lake Michigan buoy, about 40 miles west of Holland shows a water temp. of 64.  That’s warm water and that could help the cause.  Today gets a little breezy with increasing cloudiness this AM.  Beginning on Wednesday it looks cool, especially as we get toward the end of the week.

Let’s hope we actually get some action out of this. And btw, I am reading a good book called ‘Issacs Storm’. It has to do with the great hurricane of 1900 and it’s impacts on Houston, as well as the life and unfortunate deal of Isaac, their local weather man at the time before the hurricane hit.

If you like weather stories, you should check out the book “So Cold a Sky” about Upper Peninsula weather. :)

      1. Daniel G says:

Got that one on a journey up north a few years back. Interesting book but they get darn few tornadoes in da UP!

      2. Nathan (Forest Hills) says:

Thanks Lisa, it sounds very interesting. I am not a big reader, but when it comes to weather books I cant put them down!

Does anyone know what happened on 100th Street near Kalamazoo Ave. early this morning around 6:30 am? I’m not sure whether it was a fire or a car crash, but the road was blocked off and traffic was being turned around. There were quite a few emergency vehicles at the scene, from what I could tell. I couldn’t find any news about it on WOOD this afternoon, but I figure it was something big since the road was blocked off.

    1. Someone was pinned in there car after an accident

  3. Mike (Mattawan) says:

Well, with the cooler temps and increasingly rainy pattern setting up, I think it is safe to say that we are now entering the full swing of the changing season. Thus far it has been a pretty warm start to fall, sad to see it go! Wake me when it hits 80 again next May! haha

  4. Dan says:

Rainy and cooler to snowy? It’ll take a few weeks yet. Depending on who you listen to its supposed to stay mild. Once we get into November all bets are off for the warm weather to stay around!

  5. Daniel G says:

Took the boat and dock out this past Saturday and looking forward (already) to the 2014 season of boats on the lake and nice weather again.
As for Tuesday just hold off the rain till we’re done with first shift at the train yard cause workin in da rain ain’t a lotta fun!
Massive acorn and hickory nut crop this year after NUTTIN last year to speak of. Portend of things to come? We shall see….

    1. Rad ( Jenison / Hudsonville ) says:

I have more Walnuts Than the last 5 years. Just a Ton of them. Apple trees branches hanging on the ground from the weight of the Apples.

  6. Going to view fall colors in Midland County Michigan this Friday. Any ideas on how good the colors are up there???

  7. Michael (Berrien county) says:

GOOD, I despise Winter !! The Older I Get Barry. Bring on SPRING !!! Stay Cued !

        1. Barry in Zeeland says:

          Amen to that!

      2. Bill Steffen says:

And again CPC has not a pixel of blue on the map…they don’t think any single spot in the U.S. is going to have a higher than average chance of cooler than average (1981-2010 average). Not likely.

        1. Irish coffee says:

Right on, Bill!! I would bet $1,000,000 that somewhere in contiguous US registers BELOW avg for 3 mo. period …and likely more than a few states, fwiw.

  8. Jim S (Saugatuck Twp) says:

The 18Z GFS has gone bonkers. Shows possible rain/snow mix for much of lower Michigan by the end of the weekend…then has a snowstorm toward the end of next week followed by 3-4 day of cold and bouts of snow. That won’t happen, but it could signal a short term pattern change we haven’t seen for awhile.

    1. Michael (Berrien county) says:

Definitely a sign of a pattern change, but yeah I’m somehow doubting that we’ll be piling up the lake effect snow before Halloween even gets here.

      1. Irish coffee says:

Back in the mid-60′s, Paw Paw station “2East” measured approx 2ft from localized LES event circa 21-22nd Oct.(it was either ’62 or ’65)

  9. Barry in Zeeland says:

And again the Northern Lights are getting active. Kp at unsettled and chances going up for the next 24-36 hours:

It would be nice to see something while we have these great clear nights. Once we get into November and December we seem to have the perpetual cloud cover over us.

    1. Jack says:

Just noticed The KP index is at 4.67 !!!! Keep LOOKING UP ! And Enjoy The SHOW!!! Stay Cued !!!

  10. Uncle Sparkee says:

We’ll well well my little weather hobos. Your ol uncle sparks did a little share cropping today. All the outdoor monsters r picked and jarred! Should have plenty of road rage to get thru the long cold winter ahead. Your ol aunty Edna’s been cuttin wood for two weeks strait, my backs been acting up so aunty Edna split that wood like a beaver on crack! Winter in yo the north county can be long, but we survive!

    1. Jack says:

HEY Uncle Sparkee …. Speaking of HARVEST… Here is Old Pure Prairie League SONG, Entitled HARVEST !!! CUE, and ENJOY the ” BUDS” of Your LABOR !!!! PEACE.. UNCLE SSSSSSS…. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4eQf24NhaCc. ;-)

  11. Does anyone know how good the fall colors are up in Midland County?? Going up there friday to go take a look

    1. Jack says:

      Try this Link Kyle :: http://www.michigan.org › Travel News › News. :-)

    2. Jack says:

Also Found This Kyle !! In Midland County, a drive along US-10 west to  Eastman Road has stands of trees showcasing beautiful shades of red, orange and yellow. Color saturation is between 50-75 percent throughout the area with peak less than one week away. Happy Viewing ;-)

  12. Models show showers and storms arriving sometime between 3PM and 8PM today… they differ on intensity and timing though. SPC has kept the 5% risk for hail and wind (marginal) might be my last chance to see storms this season. A local chase appears to be in order if things get going good enough. A See Text usually verifies. Regardless, I should have a good day even if storms do not develop. I want to get some more fall color shots, and maybe try fishing once more before the colder weather sets in. Should I get any footage, it will be posted to this page: https://www.facebook.com/pages/Charles-Russell-Stormypleasurescom/446838005432994 Feel free to give it a like!
