Happy 75th to my 2nd favorite clown!

October 16th, 2013 at 2:00 pm by under Bill's Blog, Weather

bozo   How many of you remember this.  Dick Richards, West Michigan’s own Bozo The Clown turns 75 years old today (Wednesday).  Some of us are getting together from noon – 7 PM Friday at Bob’s Sports Bar (725 Michigan NE in G.R.).  It’s a surprise for Dick, so don’t tell him about it.  Hope we get a nice crowd.  Stop by and say “hi”.  The public is welcome!   I’ll be there shortly after noon.  Dick took over Bozo from Bill Merchant in 1968.  I came to WZZM in Nov. 1974 (I started at $175 a week, working 6 days a week).  Bozo’s Big Top ran on WZZM until 1999.  I think WGN in Chicago was the only other station carrying Bozo as late as 1999.  That was a lot of Bucket Bonanzas!  I remember the kids getting Burger King crowns and at the end of the show, a goodie bag with a loaf of Wonder Bread from Hostess.  While I’m at it, let me also say Happy Birthday to Craig Rich (birthday Friday) (there’s something about guys born in mid-October and fine cigars!), who’s about as famous in Holland as the tulips!    OH – about the headline!   My WIFE is a clown (so Bozo gets bumped to 2nd place)!   My wife actually spent a week at the famous Mooseburger Clown Camp in Minnesota, where you learned from the best, like Frosty and Jose Rivera.  They have classes on beginning juggling, intermediate juggling, advanced juggling, hospital clowning, balloon animals, pretty much everything you need to know to clown.

And…here’s John Coleman (formerly of Good Morning America) still doing TV weather at 79 years old.

Inflation dropped from 13.5% in 1980 to 4.1% by 1988
Unemployment fell from 7.6% to 5.5%
Net worth of families earning between $20,000 and $50,000 annually grew by 27%
Real gross national product rose 26%
The prime interest rate was slashed by more than half, from an unprecedented 21.5% in January 1981 to 10% in August 1988

Fond childhood memories of summertime trips all the way to Grand Rapids to be on the Bozo show. I was also a “almost winner” in bucket bonanza. Happy birthday Mr. Richards!

  13. Tom says:

My sister and I were on the Bozo show back when WZZM was still downtown at the Pantland Hotel, either 1966 or 1967. I remember Mr Ringmaster and Wonder Mother being part of the routine back then, it was great for kids. It beat the heck out of some of the junk tv has on for kids nowdays. Happy Birthday to you Mr Richards! God bless you and thanks for the memories and good times you have shared with us all those many years.

  14. Deb says:

Happy Birthday Dick!! I was on his show in the 80′s. I got picked for Bucket Bonanza. Only made 2!! The 3rd hit the side. I was so bummed, but had fun playing! Good Memories!

  15. Skot says:

    Bozo Laughed like Juliet Dragos.
