flying witch   The Holiday of goblins looms….with ghosts that visit haunted rooms…outside amid the ancient tombs…a wicked wind amid the glooms…and witches fly without their brooms!   (poem by me…image  © Copyright Bob Embleton and licensed for reuse under this Creative Commons Licence)

    2. Dan says:

Carman is a great singer, song writer and man of God! I have seen him in concert a few times. God Bless !

  2. Nathan (Forest Hills) says:

Good poem Bill… but how can witches fly without brooms??

    1. Mark (East Lansing) says:

      If it’s windy enough…

  3. Lisa says:

Bill, didn’t you do poems back in the 70s as part of the weather forecast? I swear I remember that from when I as a kid. One was: the weather is hot and the humidity is high; for the next couple of days, we’re just going to fry. Fun stuff!

    1. Bill Steffen says:

Yes I did do poems on the air in the 1970s. Snow, Snow, Beautiful Snow, Slip on a Piece and Away You Go!

  4. Rocky (Rockford) says:

GR has had quite a stretch of below average temperatures and counting. We are headed for 3 or 4 more below average days and then a couple slightly above average and then right back down again! Winter and SNOWSTORMS will be her before you know it. The first major winter storm for GR will be the week 12-9-13. Get ready to ROCK!

    1. kevin. w says:

Maybe before Rocky by looking at some of the global players out there. AO/NAO pretty positive but by looking whats going on over in the pacific could have some players on the table as it looks right now. Good snowpack in Eurasia and cold building near the Yukon plus were in a southwest jet instead of northwest. Sure glad the heat is done early in October that was getting old fast. :)

      1. Rocky (Rockford) says:

Yes, the beginning of October was way too hot! Keep the good news coming about winter and SNOWSTORMS!

  5. Rocky (Rockford) says:

The “global cool down” has begun!

°We are now into late October 2013 and here in GR there are still a lot of leaves on the trees. In fact I moved here in 1984 and I can not remember this many leaves still on the trees just before Halloween. Also many of the major reporting stations is SW Michigan still have not had a hard freeze (28° or below) yet and two (Holland and Muskegon) still have not gotten to 32° or below yet. Now we do have a chance of that first hard freeze on Monday night but, if we do not do it then…we will have to wait until November for that first hard freeze.
    Cloudy and 45° here now.

And it seems to me that the trees are extra-leafy this year after last year’s drought. I’m still hoping the leaves drop before we get a significant snowfall. My own maple is a Crimson King, and it hasn’t even turned colors yet, let alone started dropping leaves. I really don’t remember not having to rake the yard this late in October – most Halloweens are accompanied by dead leaves blowing everywhere

    2. Michael (Berrien county) says:

True, but considering some areas have already had several inches of snow for the season in October & a stretch of 15-20 degree below average temps, one can hardly consider the leaves still being on the trees & the lack of a 32 degree temp in a few spots yet as a sign of a warmer weather pattern either now, or anytime time soon.

  7. INDY says:

    WINTER STORM WATCHES COMING!! INDYY

    1. Rocky (Rockford) says:

No doubt – the only question is when? I predict the week of 12-9-13, however I sure hope it is a lot earlier that that! Bring it on!

    2. SlimJim NW GR (1) says:

No doubt there will be several winter storm watches this coming winter…and I am sure some will pan out and some will not pan out just like ever winter.

      1. Mike (Mattawan) says:

The nice thing about winter storms (as opposed to thunderstorms) is that there is a good possibility once a watch is issued that they will pan out and its very likely to happen once a warning is issued. Its nice to have stuff to track!

  8. Cliff(Scotts) says:

Holland is now in its 10th straight day of average to below average temperatures!!! Looking like another average month coming are way a lot of areas are already down to +1-2.5 above normal from are very mild start to this month. I made a prediction earlier saying we would end up 1 to 1.5 above normal. Looking pretty good so far.

  9. Cliff(Scotts) says:

finally figured out what is causing global warming!!!!

    its a shocker!!!

    1. Brian (Grandville) says:

      Go figure.

  10. SlimJim NW GR (1) says:

Looking at the next two months I found this information on what to expect (on average) for Grand Rapids.

    Here is November

    And here is December

Going to get ready and take a walk its now sunny here with a temp of 55°

  11. Ned S. (Now in South Holland) says:

Just got back from a week at Crystal Mountain. Played golf three times, even though the temperature never got close to 50 degrees. There was snow on the ground there Wed. and Thursday morning. I didn’t play those days; it barely made 40 degrees. The cart cover helped a lot though.

  12. Anyone maybe have any idea how November is going to shape out in terms of snowfall? Are we going to get any snowstorms that will causes several inches to fall or will it be like last year with maybe a few flakes? Would like to know because I have people wondering the same thing. Need snow for November 15 for the start of gun season out hunting!!

    1. Brad says:

Bill had predicted early snowy weather for awhile now. He biffed big time a couple years ago but conditions seem ripe for some early cold and snow accumulation.

  13. Nick says:

hey bill you never posted your winter weather outlook like last year

    1. DF (Se Mich) says:

We type with the random “like” inserted now…… yikes.
