Click on the graphic to enlarge. The top map is average (mean) temperature for Oct. 1-27 and the map on the bottom is the temperature difference from average for Oct. 1-27. It’s been cooler than average over much of the West and High Plains with warmer than average temperatures showing from the Great Lakes to the Mid-Atlantic and New England. The warmth is from the first two weeks of the month. Grand Rapids is down to +1.7 for the month, but the last couple days (esp. 10/31) should boost that back at least to +2 deg. Grand Rapids has picked up 3.9″ of rain so far this month and if we get 1.1″ before 11:59 pm on the 31st – we’ll go over 5″. Over 5.1″ and we’re looking at a top-ten wettest October. Marquette has now had at least a trace of snow on 11 consecutive days (total is only 3.1″). Today, Marquette had a chilly high/low temp. of 35/18. There could be a more serious shot of cold air and possible lake-effect snow in mid-November, around the 16th-20th.
Model update: The overnight run of the European model gives G.R. 1.74″ of rain from Weds. night to Friday AM with piddly showers into Saturday and a chance of a freeze Sunday AM. The GFS plot has the same 1 3/4″ of rain for G.R. from Weds. night to Fri. AM. It keeps us (barely) above freezing Sun. AM with a wind off the lake and generally has cool, but not real cold air for early November. The Convective Outlooks from the Storm Prediction Center give W. Michigan a chance of a thundershower (mainly just plain rain), but severe weather stays to our south.
