Weekend

November 9th, 2013 at 1:37 am by under Bill's Blog, Weather

Kalamaoo Holiday Parade with Bill  I was in the Kalamazoo Holiday Parade Sat. morning along with Terri DeBoer and Kalamazoo native Emily Linnert.  Lots of people, a little windy – gusts to 31 mph in Kalamazoo and 39 mph in Grand Rapids.  Instead of the helium (too expensive and scarce) balloons, we have the inflatables and they went through the parade OK despite the wind.  I have several people tell me they read the blog, thanks for that.  Inside now (Sat. evening) after raking some leaves.

I never did get a sports thread up.  Michigan loses 17-13 to Nebraska, a rare home loss.  Michigan’s just 2-3 in the Big Ten, with away games at Northwestern and Iowa and then Ohio St. comes calling.  Michigan’s only scored 19 points in the last 2 games.  My Wisconsin Badgers snapped the 5-game winning streak of BYU.  Wisconsin had an over-12 minute edge in time of possession.  Have you noticed Minnesota?  Four Big Ten wins in a row and 8-2 for the season.  The last time Minnesota won four Big Ten games in a row was 1973, when I was in college!  That year Minnesota was 7-4, but 3 of their losses were against the teams that ended up ranked #2, #3 and #4 in the country.  Western Michigan lost a heartbreaker against Eastern Michigan in overtime 35-32.  Eastern fired their football coach on Friday, so the offensive coordinator was coaching.  It’s only the second win for Eastern this year.  Western’s only win was at U. Mass last week by one point.  Grand Valley and Ferris St. won handily Sat. afternoon.  Central Michigan (3-6) lost last Weds. to Ball St.  Notre Dame and Pittsburgh on WOTV4 this Sat. evening.  Michigan St. did not play this Sat.  Lions and Bears at 1 PM Sunday and Dallas heads to New Orleans for Sunday Night Football on NBC.  In Hockey, the Red Wings take on Tampa Bay and NASCAR heads to Phoenix.   You can follow Canadian temperatures as the cold air builds.  Arctic Village, Alaska was -35F Friday morning – pretty cold for Nov. 8.

  2. Jeff (Fremont) says:

    1. Rocky (Rockford) says:

Hi all, here is a good blog related read dating back 100 years:
    http://m.detnews.com/topstories/article?a=2013311090033&f=1207

    1. Jim S (Saugatuck Twp) says:

I read it lasted 4 days. Imagine a blizzard lasting that long in early November.

  4. Kevin (Marshall) says:

Seems like a wind advisory is needed.

  5. Casey says:

Big wind on lake Huron today…..http://www.intellicast.com/National/Wind/Current.aspx?location=USMI0545

    Which should mean big waves.

  6. Travis (Oakland County) says:

WXYZ forecasting a high of 57 today. Gotta love it!

    1. Mark (East Lansing) says:

WBAY is forecasting a high of 46 today.

    2. Travis (Oakland County) says:

Hey DF, even Wood is calling today mild LOL

      1. Brian (Grandville) says:

Holding at 50* now, and windy. Far from mild, more like average.

    3. Brad says:

No sustained below normal temps on the horizon, either. I thought this was predicted to be a cold, snowy November?

      1. Mark (East Lansing) says:

Have you looked at the forecast? 30s and 40s for highs this whole coming week. BTW, those temps would be below average.

        1. Brad says:

Right, a brief cool shot with only one day in the 30s, then back to mid-40s (average). Just what I posted.

        2. Mark (East Lansing) says:

Not according to the NWS forecast.

        3. Brad says:

This is the WOOD-TV8 web page.

        4. Mark (East Lansing) says:

          Correct. Well done.

      2. Rocky (Rockford) says:

We will be having a stretch of below average temperatures all week, starting on Sunday. The average high temperature for next week is in the upper 40′s. Did you go to the Travis school of global warming fantasy land?

        1. Rodey (Rockford) says:

What mini ice age fantasy school did you go to. I love it. Fantastic.

        2. Rocky (Rockford) says:

          Rocky=jackass

      3. Bill Steffen says:

Brad – the average temperature for November will be about 1/2 degree colder than average after today (Tues.). This certainly will not be an unusually warm month. It’s going to freeze in Dallas, the earliest freeze in 13 years.

  7. Mark (East Lansing) says:

Your excitement is puzzling. Generally a degree or two within average is considered mild.

  8. INDY says:

    1. Mark (East Lansing) says:

I hope that pans out. It will make for all the below average days we’ve had lately.

      1. Rocky (Rockford) says:

Yes, below normal temperatures for all of next week! Bring it on!

    2. Brad says:

    5. Bill Steffen says:

Travis – check the forecast for Flint: http://forecast.weather.gov/MapClick.php?map.x=162&map.y=124&site=dtx&zmx=1&zmy=1#.Un7jMRAzcY0 Average high 49 Sunday to 47 next Saturday. The only day warmer than avg. in the forecast is next Saturday and that’s one degree warmer than average! High of 33 Tues. is 15 deg. colder than average. No one said you’d be shoveling snow…seldom happens in early-mid November. But they could get a couple inches of snow down near Cincinnati: http://wxcaster4.com/nam/CONUS_ETA212_SFC_ACCUMSNOWFALL-KUCHERA_84HR.gif

      1. Mark (East Lansing) says:

        Disproved.

      2. INDY says:

Bill u know Travass has 6 different names on your blog!!! INDY

  10. Rocky (Rockford) says:

Get ready people. We will be having a hard winter. All of the teleconnectors and the long range models show us having a hard winter! As you all know the average high temp for this time of year is still up around 50 degrees, so we should not be seeing much snow currently, but when mid December rolls around watch out! COLD and SNOW Rocks! The “little Ice Age” is upon us – it must be the new normal!

    1. Nathan (Forest Hills) says:

I thought it was supposed to be a snowy November? And it is unusual (besides the past few years) to have a warm and dry December, so your guess about snow and cold in mid December will most likely be correct unless the atmospheric dynamics don’t favor a cold dome to drop over us. But no one really knows until the time finally arrives!

      1. Barry in Zeeland says:

He does this every year. If you go back the past couple years and look at the blog entries from September to December, he has pretty much just copied and pasted every post he’s made. Look how the past couple winters have then turned out.

        1. Rocky (Rockford) says:

Thanks for listening. I appreciate your support!

  11. Jim S (Saugatuck Twp) says:

Each model consistent in keeping the main lake effect band down in far SW Berrien Co and LaPorte in Indiana. They are talking about possible headlines there.

  12. Dan says:

Still very windy! It was around noon and it still.is. Looking at the winds affecting the football in the Big House.
