wndu berrien 1 Joe Crooks The picture on the left is a screen grab from the Benton Harbor/St. Joseph webcam of WNDU (the NBC station in S. Bend).  The picture on the right is from Joe Crooks near St. Joseph, Michigan this (Tues.) morning.  You can see lots of snow on the left side of the channel.  If everything had fallen into place (longevity of favorable conditions – cyclonic curvature, etc.) this would have been an epic lake-effect event.  In the time that it was clicking, it was clicking.  Check out the storm reports from Berrien Co. and NW Indiana.  A trained spotter measured 14″ of new snow in St. Joseph, with snowfall rates of up to 2″ an hour.  There were reports of 13″ in Stevensville and 8″ at Berrien Springs.  Over half a foot of snow fell in La Porte Co., Indiana.  What’s left of the snow is winding down at noon on the N. Indiana radar.  Here’s the  Grand Rapids radar.  The Weather Channel was broadcasting live from Berrien Co. this morning.  We’ve had reports of 2-4″ of snow in wHerestern Oceana and western Mason County.   Near Kalkaska, there was a report of 6.5″ of new snow with quite a few 2-4″ totals3-6″ of snow fell east of Marquette.   It was 9 above zero this morning at Leota in Clare Co.   Here’s webcams in Michigan to check out.  Here’s Calumet in the U.P.  Check out the snow in Kalkaska – enough to snowmobile on.  Several inches of snow fell east of Cleveland.   They had 2-3″ of snow in Valparaiso, Indiana, but the lake-effect missed Chicago.  Snow fell down to northern Kentucky.  Up to 2 feet of snow has fallen in SE Alaska.  Up to 19″ in N. Central Alaska14″ of new snow in MontanaMore Montana snow totals. Snow in W. Virginia.  There’s been some flooding in Hawaii.      Some pretty cold air across the central U.S.  Here’s low temperatures this morning, including -1 at Aberdeen SD, 0 at Havre MT, 7 at Rochester MN and Mason City IA and 26 at Amarillo TX.  On the other hand the low was 74 in Miami and 76 at Key West.   The first flurries of the year fell in New York and Philadelphia and this is the coldest air in Washington D.C. in November since 2008.   There’s a nice map here (click on it to enlarge) of the path of Haiyan over the Philippines.  MacArthur Memorial in the Philippines after Haiyan.

Travis and all his hot air didnt warm that area of the globe apparently.

    1. Rodey (Rockford) says:

      Speaking of hot air.

      1. Rocky (Rockford) says:

Speaking of fixxxer = brain dead!

        1. Rodey (Rockford) says:

Speaking of Rocky=Jackass Thanks for listening.

  2. Ed (Coloma) says:

What a difference a few miles make! We received less then 2 inches in Coloma.

  3. Jim S (Saugatuck Twp) says:

Looks like the up and down pattern continues for at least the next couple of weeks. We get a nice warm up with rain, followed by a brief cold shot next week…then another warm up followed by a cool shot the following week. Next weeks cool shot could have lake effect as well. No signs of any snowstorms.

    1. Matt (Spring Lake) says:

Probably another stupid North wind event…I have yet to see a good “classic west wind” lake effect event since moving here five years ago…

  4. Jim S (Saugatuck Twp) says:

By the way…whatever happened to fixxxer?

    1. Skot says:

do you really care? or just being nice.

    2. Jack says:

He is Still Here. Using His MANY ” Names of Shame”!!! Ain’t that Right, Indy ??? Lol… Stay Cued … ;-) grand rapids, for Decent Lake Effect SNOW, LAST Week of Nov. ( per JEM model )… *****. ;-)

      1. Rocky (Rockford) says:

The JEM model is a gem of a SNOW predictor. Keep it rocking!

    3. Jim S (Saugatuck Twp) says:

I was just curious. He has been a “fix”ture on here for years. No pun intended.

      1. Rocky (Rockford) says:

He has been using multiple alais names including “Rodey”! He is a loser with a horrible attitude!

        1. Jordan (Twin Lake) says:

          And a porn addict.

        2. Rodey (Rockford) says:

Thanks for listening jackass. I lover it. Fantastic.

  5. Travis Ulberg (West of Martin, Allegan County) says:

Here is a pic that one of my friends posted on Facebook. His caption on the pic said: “My client in St. Joe sent me this pic, no wonder he canceled our meeting….”
It is a lot of snow even for the middle of winter!

    1. Mark (East Lansing) says:

    2. Rocky (Rockford) says:

    3. GunLakeDeb says:

Tell him he needs to share!! Quit hogging all the snow!

  6. Michael (Berrien county) says:

About 4-5 inches here in southeastern Berrien near Buchanan, Bill. Still pales in comparison to the 14+ inches they had up around St. Joseph this morning though.

  7. Nathan (Forest Hills) says:

I remember when I was in second grade or first grade (so sometime around 2002-2004) there was a huge blizzard and I still rememebr that. I also remember it being all lake effect snow…. Does anyone recall this storm? (Blizzard)

    1. Nathan (Forest Hills) says:

Okay, make that 2003-2005, just sometime around there there was a massive lake effect blizzard in southern GR

      1. Jim S (Saugatuck Twp) says:

Not sure…but in either 2001 or 2002..the week between Christmas and New Year’s, GR had about 60-70″ of lake effect. Little wind so the trees had a ton of snow on them. Superbowl weekend of 2007 we had a lake effect blizzard that crushed the entire west side.

        1. Brian (Grandville) says:

I remember both. The 2007 event had a lot of wind, and significant drifting in the country.

        2. Jeff (Richland) says:

That would have been 2001 I believe. I was a junior at WMU, school shut down a day early before Thanksgiving break due to a foot + overnight. Best I have ever seen here though was in 2008, over Christmas break, we were clobbered that December. I was home in NJ for break, called the school toward end of break, and they told me to not come back anytime soon and that roads were impassable. When I did return, there were cars left at the dorms over break that we litterally only visible by the mounds of snow covering them. That was the first time in my life I had ever seen cars completely burried, insane!

        3. Nathan (Forest Hills) says:

Yea then it had to have been 2001 becuase who would forget a storm of that magnitude. When you add in the wind to fluffy lake effect snow, things don’t turn out so well. It is actually pretty surprising that lake effect snow could even form with winds over 35 MPH… it seems like the storm would fall apart. I guess the other dynamics must have been really strong then.

        4. SlimJim NW GR (1) says:

We had several years with a lot of snow in the recent past…

          December 2001 53.1″
there was a big storm in early January of 1999
also a ton of snow in December of 2000 59.1″
and again in Feb of 2007 33.6 and again in Feb of 2008 41.6″
          and December of 2008 54.6″
In fact the winters of 2007/08 and 2008/9 are the only two back to back winters that GR recorded over 100″ of snow.

  8. spoon says:

Surprise surprise no snow in sight.

    1. Rocky (Rockford) says:

Seek medical help quickly before it is too late!

      1. Rodey (Rockford) says:

  9. Rocky (Rockford) says:

I love the temperatures outside today. Keep it coming. COLD and SNOW ROCKS!

    1. Jeff (Richland) says:

Crap weather. Thank goodness this weekend looks much warmer!!

  10. John says:

Looks like another big cool down is on the way next week! it also looks like northerly flow lake effect snow will take place, hitting Berrien county once again! Something to watch next week!

    1. John says:

Looks like that flow goes more west northwest later on the day Tuesday into early Wednesday next week. So that could mean that areas west of 131 that didn’t get hit last night could have a chance next week!

  11. INDY says:

Snow watches coming for next Monday Tuesday Wednesday Thursday Then blizzard watches for Friday Saturday and Sunday>>>>> So enjoy the mid 40′s this week’nd that’s it till March!!! Sprites on ice and Snow shovels are selling hot cakes Stay Tuned/////INDYY

    1. Rodey (Rockford) says:

Is that like the snowstorm you predicted for the 15th?

  12. spoon says:

I’ll be wearing shorts next week with are 60 degree temperatures

    1. Mark (East Lansing) says:

      Good luck with that.

    2. Jack says:

SPOON ????? Hmmmm…. With a needle and a spoon ? Lol. Global Warming Addict !!!

      1. SW Kent says:

Jack, you sure seem to like to put people down……shocking coming from a Grand Rapids Christian parent.

        1. Rocky (Rockford) says:

What is shocking is your lame attempt at trolling!

        2. Mark (East Lansing) says:

  14. spoon says:

For everyone saying cold and snow next week i wouldn’t get my hopes up if i was you. We will be in store for more 60s and rain

    1. Rocky (Rockford) says:

In your dreams. Your delusions are even worse than Travass. In fact you sound just like Travass? Interesting?

      1. Rodey (Rockford) says:

And you sound like a jackass. I love it. Fantastic.

  15. Travis Ulberg (West of Martin, Allegan County) says:

I never got above freezing here today. Currently at 29.6°. Still have a dusting of snow on the ground.

    1. Mark (East Lansing) says:

32 here – far below average. The sun took care of what little snow we had. The wind is brisk, though.

  16. spoon says:

What’s delusional is all you winter lovers who want snow and cold weather. It isn’t coming. Mild winter and lucky if grand rapids gets 50 inches this year. This is the new normal.

    1. Rocky (Rockford) says:

Wow – get a life and some meds while you are at it! The new normal is the evolving “Little ICE AGE” Get used to it!

      1. Rodey (Rockford) says:

Your mini ice age sickness is getting much worse. Seek help. You are delusional. Fantastic. I love it. Thanks for listening. Get used to it.

        1. Rocky (Rockford) says:

Rodey aka fixxxer you are a sorry excuse of a human being!

  17. spoon says:

No ice age atleast not here. Fixxer can back me up.

  18. INDY says:

  19. I had a feeling I should have driven down there last night haha

  20. spoon says:

Up to the 60s for saturday and sunday ///// SPOONN

    1. Mark (East Lansing) says:

One can only hope, albeit not likely.

  21. Nathan (Forest Hills) says:

I know that it is a little early to get our hopes up (a whole week in advance), but at least there is a chance of lake effect snow for our area next week when more cold air pours into our area. I have learned my lesson about getting too excited in advance, but some heavy snow is definitely a possibility! :)

    1. John says:

The cold shot looks likely next week, so I would say as long as we have the moisture to work with and a northwest to west northwest flow, I think everyone west of 131 could get some decent accumulations. Just an early guess though anything can change!

    2. GunLakeDeb says:

We need more cold nights to cool the ground, so when the snow falls, it sticks around for a while. It was 18 degrees at my house this morning (down in a “bowl”) – THAT ought to start cooling the ground and forming some skim ice on the lakes!

      1. Nathan (Forest Hills) says:

Yea but there may be a brief warmup thus weekend, which would kind of ruin any ground cooling. And now that you bring that up, if we do receive rain before the snow, there could be a flash freeze once the cold front moves through.

  22. Matt (Spring Lake) says:

Wow, this thread is completely ruined by all the antagonism. Yikes!

  23. michael g (SE GR) says:

Travis’s “Boy Do The Next Two Weeks Look Warm Challenge” update. 9 days in (Nov 3-11) GR is sitting at +0.1*. Today will drop that well negative. Not looking good for old Trav.

  24. michael g (SE GR) says:

Pretty sure spoon is Fix is disguise.

Rodey is someone with more intelligence and at least a little bit of a sense of humor.

    1. Rocky (Rockford) says:

You could be correct, but they both need to get life and face reality. WINTER, COLD and SNOW is on the way baby!

  25. spoon says:

Facts are more mild and wet weather on the way…. SPOONN

  26. SlimJim NW GR (1) says:

You know there has been some talk of trolling here on this blog (and yes I think there are a lot of trolls on here) but anyway my curiosity got the better of me so I look to see what a troll is and lo and be hold but by this definition just about all of the contributors to this blog are trolls of one type or another have fun finding not only others but see if you can find your self in the list.

    1. Rocky (Rockford) says:

Those are great and I sure do not fit any of thoes descriptions, however I see Travass and Rodey aka fixxxer were included on the list :)

  27. Rocky (Rockford) says:

Looks COLD and SNOW is on the way! hey hey, my my, rock n roll will never die!

  28. Brad says:

No ifs, ands, or buts; it’s cold out there. Bill’s scoring some prediction points. Now we’ll see if the 70ish weather next week pans out.

  29. dylan says:

Once again…you ALL seem like grumpy old men!! Do you REALLY have to be so childish as to name call and cut each other down so bad!??? This is supposed to be fun and a place to share what’s going on outside our windows and stuff…yet most of you seem to do nothing but name call and cut each other down!! Those of you who have kids and grand kids and other young family members…is this really how you would want them to treat others!???? Sheesh…GROW UP guys!!!! GROW UP!!!!

    1. Mark (East Lansing) says:

      You tell ‘em, sport.

    2. Rocky (Rockford) says:

To each their own dylan. Rock on and here are the facts:

      1. Travis is obsessed with global warming.
      2. fixxxer is a whiny complainer.
      3. COLD and SNOW Rules!
      4. GR will be seeing over 100 inches of SNOW this winter!
      5. Winter sports are an important part of the tourist industry in this state!
      6. Winter is on our doorstep so get ready!
      7. The JEM and RDB model ROCK!
      8. Rock n Roll will never die!
      9. Thanks for listening!

      1. John says:

Although I don’t think GR will be seeing over 100 inches of snow this winter, I think you can bet on 70-80 inches with the lake shore counties getting closer to the 100 amount! But I guess it’s anyone’s guess at this point!

      2. Nathan (Forest Hills) says:

Respect other peoples opinions and share truthful forecasts Rocky, thats what he is trying to say…

        1. Rocky (Rockford) says:

I respect everyone’s opinions other than Travis and fixxxer! Some people need to lighten up!

      3. Justin says:

  31. spoon says:

Monday scattered showers and 60…. SPOON

  32. Imagine what we would do here in Michigan if we didn’t get lake effect. We would get some very lame winters!! Looks like next week we get another cold snap after the warm-up with lake effect snow to follow!! Bring on the snow!!

  33. Nathan (Forest Hills) says:

I was just thinking about how Texas (as in Dallas) got snow before us last year! My grandma, who lives in that area, said that she couldn’t travel for days while the big storm was around…. but as it turns out, this “storm” was just a small clipper system that dumped .5-1 inch of snow! Remember last February, where we picked up feet of snow? It felt as if every day left us with a couple inches of snow… and every few days bombarded us with snowstorm after snowstorm. They really don’t know what we go through.

    1. Brian(Grandville) says:

Texas seems to get snow before us quite often early in the season.

  34. I love it how in the summer we hate Lake Michigan because of thunderstorms but in the winter we are dependant on it to give us some good old winter!

  35. spoon says:

Enjoy the mild temperatures coming and get used to it. It’s gonna be a green christmas this year

    1. yooper4021 says:

      Thanks for sharing

    2. John says:

Then explain the 30′s we have coming for next week!

      1. spoon says:

        It will change

        1. John says:

Don’t see that change in fact Thanksgiving looks really cold!

  36. kevin. w says:

Its very interesting to note that some of the midwest NWS forecasters are stating that were getting into more of a phasing with the northern/southern jets as we go through the rest of the month. More cold will come down with each storm but most of the cold will start out in the rockies and gradually move east with possible snowstorm chances as we get passed mid month for us. Still waiting on the MJO to makes it move and the AO/NAO to start tanking and some models still show this happening around or just after turkey day. Will see.

    1. John says:

What’s your thinking on lake effect snow potential for early next week?

  37. It seems like every year Berrien County gets one really good lake effect event in the beginning, and then after that it kicks off for other areas. I remember Bills posting last year (not sure the exact date) read “Burying Berrien”

    1. John says:

I think next week will be the week where it kicks off for the other areas!

  38. Ryan (Rockford) says:

I stated earlier that I had a low of 18.1 this morning. Well, that should be surpassed within the hour, as it’s already 18.7 with clear skies. I’m anxious to see just how low we can get.

    1. Sitting at 24 here my me. Should drop around 20 or upper teens I would think here

  39. spoon says:

Travis made the right call. The nws should hire him and fixxer

    1. Mark (East Lansing) says:
