Cold and Snow

nohrsc snow  north american snow cover    These are two different views of the snow cover across the U.S. and Canada.  This (Fri.) morning we had snow on the ground over 46.3% of the Lower 48 states.  That compares to just 6% on 12/7/12.   Big difference.  Hudson Bay is now about 75% ice covered and Lake Nipigon will be next.  Look at the snow cover down in Texas and in places like Oregon.  Some wicked cold afternoon high temperatures:  -14 Miles City MT, -13 Havre, Cut Bank and Glasgow MT (there were a couple of spots across the Canadian border with highs of -20F!), -9 Devils Lake and Minot ND and Cody WY, -7 Alexandria MN, -1 Valentine NE, 7 Colorado Springs (beat yesterday by 1 deg.), 26 Eugene OR, 29 Dallas TX, 31 Junction TX, 42 Las Vegas NV (beat yesterday by one deg.), 48 Brownsville TX.   On the warm side, the high was 86 in Fort Myers FL and 85 in Orlando FL.  Quite a temperature contrast across the front with New Orleans at 82 at Baton Rouge at 57….Rome GA at 77 and Nashville TN at 37.    Cannonsburg Ski Area opens SaturdayBittersweet will be open this weekend.  Here’s Michigan ski conditions.

Since 1979, when my high-resolution NCEP CFSR reanalysis starts, this Arctic blast is coldest/earliest (sub-15°) for CONUS spatial avg.

  5. John says:

Bill just said that lakeshore areas could pick up 6″ or more of snow Monday-Wednesday next week with lake effect! :)

  6. SlimJim NW GR (1) says:

Off to our west there is a huge chunk of real estate with temps below zero. In fact I can find a reported temp above zero in Minnesota, North Dakota, South Dakota, Montana, and Wyoming with only a few locations just above zero in Nebraska and Iowa and a lot of low single digits temps in Wisconsin. Here in Michigan there temps in the single digits above zero in the UP but here in Lower Michigan all of the temps are in the teen and 20’s

    1. Bill Steffen says:

Thank you Lake Michigan…it’s been adding 5-10 degrees to the air as it comes across from Wisconsin.

      1. Jack says:

What is the Temp. Of Lake Michigan Right Now BILL ? I tried to Get Data from The Lake M.I Buoys .Either they Said NO DATA Available or They Did Not LIST Water Temps.. Can ya help..???

        1. Bill Steffen says:

A couple days ago the buoy said 43…it’s proabably 41 or 42 today. The lake has to “overturn” at 39 degrees, so it’ll stay at 39 for the better part of a couple of weeks.

        2. Mike in Hamilton says:

probably pulled the buoy… this is the longest they have ever left it out, i believe…

        3. Jack says:

Thank- You SIR !! And Mike You maybe Right…. ;-)

        4. whatBillwantstosaybutcant says:

Water temp near Ludington is 39.

  7. John says:

Looks like those heavier snow bands are beginning to move into the GR area!

  8. John (Holland) says:

1.5 to 2 inches of glorious lake effect snow on the ground here!

    1. Matt (Spring Lake) says:

      Here too!

  9. Mike in Hamilton says:

only another 1/2 inch since last report… up to 2.5 inches for the day. 19.8 degrees in beautiful greater metropolitan Hamilton!

  10. Travis Ulberg (West of Martin, Allegan County) says:

0.6″ here. Snowing moderately with decent sized flakes. I couldn’t go over 40mph on my way home from Otsego due to visibility about 30 mins ago.

  11. Bald Eagle (Montague) says:

The flakes are floating around but not very many of them! Just a dusting here.

    1. Jack says:

Hey Bald Eagle !! It could be SNOW, or, If There is A Wind Turbine IN ( Montague) It Could BE LEATHERS !!! SEE HERE. Obama admin. to permit eagle deaths at wind farms; Citizens rip ……/obama-admin-to-permit-eagle-deaths-at-wind-farms-citizens…
9 hours ago – White House gives wind farms pass on killing endangered eagles … being killed each year by the giant, spinning blades of wind turbines.

      1. Bald Eagle (Montague) says:

LOL. Nope, the windmills are still a few miles north of me in Hart. Still safe for the time being.
