Roses – Through the Front Door

GVSU logo    Michigan St. deserves a separate thread here.  What a game!  I think a scared the cats – I got a little loud a few times during that game.  Happy for the team, happy for the coaches (esp. Dantonio, awesome leader) – happy for one of the top athletic programs in the U.S.  They play Stanford on 1/1 at 5 PM.  Ohio St. probably may go to the Orange Bowl.  I don’t want to forget Grand Valley – they rocked Lubbers Field Saturday afternoon (a special “hi” to “Chap”).   GVSU plays next weekend at Northwest Missouri State in Maryville, which is north of St. Joseph and Kansas City.   I’m working the evening shift today (Sun.) and I’ll stay up to see the evening weather data come in tonight.  We have a week of winter ahead with light snow starting this (Sun.) evening followed by lake-effect snow and some pretty cold air.

    Lets review the facts!

    1. MI State undefeated in the Big Ten this season. All victories by double digits!
    2. OSU was playing for a chance to play for a national title!
    3. OSU was on a 24 game 2 year victory streak!
    4. It is pure heaven to see MSU ruin OSU’s title hopes and give them their first loss in 2 years! PURE HEAVEN, PRICELESS, FANTASTIC, UNBELIEVABLE, AMAZING!!!
    5. MSU ROCKS!

Very well said Bill. I can say with the utmost confidence that this victory was the most thrilling, satisfying, and important for our school that I’ve ever witnessed. I typed a long “rant” on Facebook last night that reflected how this win erased the recent frustration of missing out on BCS Bowls and national respect as a result of not being as big a name as Ohio State, Michigan, Wisconsin, etc., losing what is a bonus game (to your alma mater 2 years ago) and having that game push us out of a BCS Bowl, and losing 5 games by a total of 13 points last season.

Mark Dantonio is, in my humble opinion, as good as ANY coach in the FBS, and that includes Saban, Meyer, Miles, etc. He will never get the recruits those guys routinely get, but he gets the absolute most out of his players and has an aggressive coaching style, within reason, that has won us some huge games the last several years. How many other coaches would have gone for the 4th and 1 in the 1st quarter, especially when already in field goal range? Try an onside kick like last night (okay, that one didn’t work out this time!)? Pull the “Little Giants” play or the fake field goal against Nebraska? He always pushes the right buttons. And having that Rose Bowl sign up on the practice field all year long was a great source of motivation. He might not be the nicest guy with the media, but his players love playing for him and he has completely turned a floundering program into one of the, if not THE, best program in the Big Ten the last five years. What a win, I’m still thrilled as most of you can probably tell!
