Thursday PM Snow

December 12th, 2013 at 3:06 am by under Bill's Blog, Weather

Local  Thursday PM – Snow showers/flurries and continued cold…I just shoveled about 2″ of new snow off the driveway late morning…a small amount of drifting.  With a strong SW wind, the lake-effect is centered inland in Kent Co.  45 cars in the ditches, spun out – including 2 police cars on US 31 in Muskegon County.  4-car crash on Broadmoor and 76 – crashes on M-6 near Wilson Ave.  The car two in front of me spun out on the expressway coming home from work.  People are just driving too fast for conditions.  I’m off today – I’m working the other 6 days of this week.  Today is my wife’s birthday.  Check out the dust devil in Australia.  We have our first river ice jam/flooding…on the Manistee River near Cadillac.  There’s Lake-Effect Snow Advisories for the Keewenaw Peninsula and areas east of Marquette in the U.P. for another 4-8″ of snow.  The morning run of the NAM (caribou) doesn’t give us much snow over the weekend, 1.3″ of G.R. and 2.4″ for Jackson…an inch for Lansing with the bulk of the snow from the low pressure center east into Ohio.  Here the GFS Model…could be another big snow for Philadelphia.  GFS showing lots of sub-zero cold Christmas morning across the northern U.S.   Lake Michigan keeping us on the positive side of zero.  Still time to escape the cold in S. Florida.   Check out the snow in Jerusalem today!   Here’s the European model -deep freeze across the northern U.S.  Joe Bastardi:  ” dreadful cold outbreak for Christmas week for US. Could rival outbreaks of 1983, 1989″.    Check out the cool aurora pics. here.

but you have got to look at the latest video of the Washington tornado on Youtube. It’s from an in-home security system. Homeowner grabs the cat just in time going up the stairs before the house is demolished. House is leveled in literally seconds. Incredible footage. It’s all over youtube, can’t miss it. Just uploaded today. Just check uploads by date.

  10. John says:

The EURO shows quite the storm for all of West Michigan at the end of next week! At this point I still don’t understand where people think this is going to be a rain maker, I mean I could be wrong and that’s what could happen, I just don’t see it! Looks like a good 8-12″ snowstorm for the whole area!

    1. Jim S (Saugatuck Twp) says:

We see this play out about half a dozen times each winter…a big storm a week out. If one or two of those end up as big snow storms, it’s a good winter. 18Z GFS changing it over to rain again…but at this point, nobody knows where it will end up.

  11. John says:

I’m liking the looks of the 00Z NAM up to 8″ of snow for me over the next 3 and a half days! :)

    1. Jim S (Saugatuck Twp) says:

That is mostly from the system Saturday, topped off with some lake effect…on the east side, that is all from the system.

      1. John says:

I’m thinking well get close to warning criteria on this system, well defiantly be in advisory criteria though!

    2. Travis Ulberg (West of Martin, Allegan County) says:

3 straight runs the NAM has shifted the heavier snow farther north.

  12. Bnoppe says:

I’m curious about the new GFS will say NAM showing snow heavier north

    1. John says:

The new GFS is supposed to outrun the best model in the world the European, so once it’s out well see
If that’s the case! Let’s hope! The GFS right now is suckish!

  13. John says:

Yeah the latest NAM gives GR 8″ of snow with this weekends system and 6″ for me! That’s a lot of snow! Glad it moved it farther to the north!

    1. Jim S (Saugatuck Twp) says:

GFS gives everyone a solid 4-6″ snowfall…with a few higher amounts in southeast Michigan.

  14. Bnoppe says:

I’m super curious rather or not grr pulls the trigger on a WSW I highly doubt it in fact the discussion will say “Despite in increase in total qpf decided to follow suit with IWX and DTW and issue a winter weather advisory for what should be a high end advisory event”

  15. John says:

The 00Z GFS is all rain now with next weeks storm, still a lot of time to change, and with this snowpack I find it hard to believe it would be an all out rain maker, the Euro still looks good and shows all snow, I’m going with the euro as it’s more accurate!

    1. TomKap (Michigan St. & Fuller) Grand Rapids says:

      PRAY FOR RAIN!!!!!!!!!!

      1. John says:

        Pray for SNOW!!!!

        1. TomKap (Michigan St. & Fuller) Grand Rapids says:

          We already HAVE ENOUGH SNOW!
Seriously, some of you people are just nuts.

      2. Jack says:

        Pray for Rain….???? Sure CUE::: God Bless….ENJOY !!! ;-)

    2. Kevin(Rockford) says:

Probably be best to just ignore next weeks storm till monday, the models will be back flipping all over. That was a major change from the 18z to the 00z

  16. Jill C. says:

A belated happy birthday to Mrs. Steffen.

Enjoying the snow here in Fruitland township. This grandma made a snow angel in the front yard yesterday. ;)

    1. Jack says:

Way to Go Granny, Go Granny,Go Granny …GO!!! Lol….. Just having a Little FUN!!!! :-)

  17. TomKap (Michigan St. & Fuller) Grand Rapids says:

Interesting that temps in lower Mich are in the 25-28 degree range right now at 2:10 am. Much warmer than any of the surrounding States. Guess some of that lake breeze got inland in a bit.

  18. TomKap (Michigan St. & Fuller) Grand Rapids says:

..and I’m liking the expected temps for New Years week I’m seeing..all in the 30′s to upper 30′s! Maybe we can melt some of this CRAP.

    1. Travis Ulberg (West of Martin, Allegan County) says:

That’s 2 1/2 to 3 weeks ago! About 10 days ago the forecast for today the 13th was for highs in the upper 30′s…we’re gonna end up staying in the 20′s.

      1. Travis Ulberg (West of Martin, Allegan County) says:

        away, not ago*
