Bill Steffen and Peter Chan 1975 001   Thought you’d like to see this picture of me and Peter Chan (Jr.) from sometime in the mid – late 1970s.  We are sitting in the Chan swimming pool, which hasn’t been filled for the summer yet.  Both Peter and I were waaaaay into weather, even in elementary school.  The last I heard, Peter was living in Bethlehem, New Hampshire.  Click the pic. to enlarge.

Wow cool picture Bill. I like the aviators and hairdo! I wasn’t around back then but things sure looked a lot more social than nowadays.

    1. Mark (East Lansing) says:

Bill is the other one in the photo.

      1. Nathan (Forest Hills) says:

Yeah I know. They look like aviators from far away.

  2. Todd In Nunica says:

Bill, were you born with that mustache?

    1. Bill Steffen says:

Grew the ‘stache around age 19.

  3. Frank says:

Is Peter still doing the weather anywhere? Sad to not see him on the air locally.

  4. TomKap (Michigan St. & Fuller) Grand Rapids says:

Hey Bill: There is software out there that can get these old photos back to their original colors. I did a bunch of them a few years ago.
I’d bet if you asked someone in IT or graphic design around the station – they probably have something that would work.

  5. ~ Sandy~ from Dewitt/Clinton County says:

    Wondered whatever happened to him!!

  6. Kevin says:

Peter doesn’t live in Michigan any more. He moved last year.

That’s all I’m allowed to say.

  7. Brad says:

Wasn’t Peter Chan run out of town due to his unconventional lifestyle?

    1. Mark (East Lansing) says:

What is an unconventional lifestyle? Like he eats his dessert before the entree?

      1. Brad says:

        For starters he supposedly recycled…

  8. Kevin says:

That’s a groovy Polaroid, Bill. I remember, barely, the clothing and hair styles of the time. It was the only time in my life I recall my father with shoulder length hair. I also recall my mother dressing my brothers and I in some pretty outlandish stuff. I am happy to say it’s only a memory….

  9. INDYY says:

Glad Peter chan is gone never really liked him!!! He remind of a ufo!!! INDYY!!

    1. John (Holland) says:

Peter Chan was the best meteorologist on Fox 17. Better than Kevin “Chevy Chase” Craig and Rick.

      1. Brian(Grandville) says:

I agree, thought his forecasts were pretty accurate. He was the only other local I trusted other than Bill, and wood tv.

    2. Paul says:

Peter was the second best meteorologist in West Michigan.

    3. Graham Wellington says:

This coming from the obese guy sitting behind a computer all day drinking pop?

  10. Ray says:

Always enjoyed his weathercasts on WXMI.

  11. Steve says:

Thanks for the update, Bill. I always thought you and Peter would be a dynamic weather duo! Weather, Flyfishing and Astronomy how could you not like the guy?

  12. Eric says:

I miss Peter. I thought he was great at forecasting the weather and was always in-tune with meteorological events. I also heard he was a fantastic classical guitar player, I’m not sure if that was just a rumor though. Did he used to spent a lot of time at the observatory? I swear I remember him out there from when I was a kid.

  13. AJ (Cedar Springs) says:

This picture is great! I enjoyed watching Peter Chan when he was on Fox.

  14. Ray says:

You must have been a major inspiration to him.

  15. tom says:

I wondered what the heck happened to Peter Chan. One night he was on TV, the next he was gone and nothing was ever said. WZZM and WOOD always would give you an update if one of their staff was leaving, retiring or some such thing. Well, most of the time anyway. Talked to him at the open house at the airport weather station once, he was quite informative. Well, Happy New Years everyone!

I knew Peter personally and had a lot of respect for his weather delivery style. His dad was principal at Burton Middle School in the 1970′s and his wife was a GRPS police investigator.. Good person and I really miss him and his corny little quirps..
