Evening Flurries Mainly W of US 131

January 6th, 2014 at 2:50 am by under Bill's Blog, Weather

Local   6:25 pm Tues:   A little light snow at times this evening west of US 131 and north of I-94…this could increase just a bit later tonight, but the overall airmass is very dry…we’ve had quite a few slide-offs during the afternoon, roads are slick.  Temperatures range from 10 at Muskegon to near zero southeast of G.R.   We should be up to 18-20 deg. tomorrow, a little light snow possible around Thurs. night.  1/2″ rain Fri. night/Sat. am with temps. from 32-36 – scary-close to freezing rain – have to watch that system closely…best bet for freezing rain US 10 north…but even at 35 deg., the ground is cold and we could have icy spots on the roads.  The warmest day is Sunday…upper 30s (40 not impossible, but snow is pretty thick here)…another cold shot coming for around Jan. 18-20…not as cold as this shot, but still Arctic air.       AM avg. temp. in U.S. at 9 am EST was 13.8 (12.2 yesterday).    AM temps:  34 Orlando, 19 Pensacola, 15 Mobile, -9 Crossville TN, 6 Atlanta, 5 NYC, 4 Philadelphia, -15 Indianapolis, -17 Sturgis MI.   Frost depth 7″ in Grandville MI, some welcome snow on the way for the Cascades, western mountains, -23 Wakefield in the U.P. this morning, 58″ of snow on the ground at Painesdale in the U.P. this am.   Delaware in the U.P. has had 173″ so far this winter.   They’ll hit 200, but snow should slow down as Lake Superior freezes up.  For weather geeks:   PNA negative days 1-5 (we warm up in the Great Lakes), then goes negative by day 10 (cold comes back to the Great Lakes).   Watch me tonight on the news for the forecast update…stay warm.

2 pm temps:  18 Kennesaw GA, 21 Atlanta, 29 Pensacola, 40 Daytona Beach, 46 Orlando, 55 Miami.   Here’s National Snowcover.

Earlier:  Pretty exciting finish to the BCS Championship.   Auburn has 2 losses, wonder if MSU has a shot at #2.    Snow continues north of a line from south of Benton Harbor to Lansing.  Another 1-5″ with the heaviest totals in Allegan, Ottawa, SW Muskegon, W. Kent and W. Barry Counties.  Winds still up and drifting the snow.  Lake Michigan really warming the air…it’s -1 in G.R. and -11 in Chicago.  Battle Creek -11 and Marshall -16.  The cold air is wrapping around Lake Michigan and winds are SW south of a line from Berrien Co. to Lansing.    Sturgis dropped to -17, colder than any weather station in Alaska!    The snow is heaviest downwind from the fattest part of Lake Michigan..  -13 in Indianapolis, the coldest temp. they have had since 1994.  It’s was the teens down to Dallas (13), Jackson MS and W. Monroe LA (wonder if the guys from Duck Dynasty can go ice fishing).   There’s was a 103 deg. temperature difference from N. MN to S. FL.  Houghton was -10 even with the wind crossing Lake Superior!  Across Lake Superior it was-29 at Grand Marais MN with a wind chill of -58.  It’s was below zero this morning from Montana to northern Oklahoma and NW Arkansas to Ohio.  It’s snowing down to Atlanta (might snow all the way down to Macon).  2 pm temps:  19 Rome GA, 14 Haleyville AL, 33 Galveston TX, 35 New Orleans, 30s in the Florida Panhandle.  52% of the Lower 48 states has a snow cover this morning.   The snowstorm produced up to 19″ of snow in W. Michigan and 9-10″ in St. Louis, Chicago and Indianapolis. The cold caused both engines to freeze on an Amtrak train from Detroit to Chicago, stranding passengers for nine hours just past Kalamazoo, Mich., until another train arrived to tug it the rest of the way home.  Check out the massive wave in England (storm hitting them, too).  Another massive wave on the French Coast.   On the other hand, the beach was a little crowded in Rio de Janeiro over the weekend.   Lake Michigan this morning from the North Side of Chicago.  Continental U.S. average temperature at 9 am was 12.2 deg!  It’s colder in Coldwater, Michigan than it is in Barrow, Alaska right now!!    Antarctic ice extent has had spectacular growth in the past year.   Today we set a record for areal extent for the date by nearly 10%

“Vortex Retreats But Comes Back Briefly Between the 16th-20th. More Deep Cold Possible Late January into February!” – Paul Pastelok, Accu-Weather long-range forecaster.

Morning run of the NAM (caribou) is in…coldest temperature in G.R. is early tonight…fastest winds are midday tomorrow…wind chills stay -15 to -30, but could reach -40 south of a line from Benton Harbor to Lansing where the air is not coming over Lake Michigan.  It might get close to 30 deg. Thurs. PM.    Look at Record Low Temperatures this AM.

Here’s radar and links.  A north/south band of heavy snow developed over Lake Michigan Sunday evening and moved inland, accompanied by heavy snow and winds gusting to 30-40 mph.  The band came onshore in Berrien Co. about mid-evening and reached Grand Rapids around 5 am.  Look at the cold air coming into Michigan from Wisconsin.  Here’s current Michigan temperatures.    Temperatures and wind chills are dropping.  Here’s a national weather map…look how cold it is in the central U.S.   Check out the updated threads below this one, too.   Here’s the NAM model 84-hour snowfall and the GFS 120-hour snowfall. Keep watching WOOD-TV and coming here to www.woodtv.com for the latest on the snow and cold. I anticipate lots of closings/cancellations again on Tuesday.

52″ of snow on the ground at Painesdale. ICE expanding rapidly on the Great Lakes. Cold safety tips.  From the Indiana Dept. of Transportation:  “Many cars have been abandoned in the middle of the roads and that’s making it harder to clear roads.”

  4. Cliff(Scotts) says:

-15 here, interesting how much colder it gets out in the country compared to the city. Must be warmer in the city from all the underground sewage.

    1. DF (SE Mich) says:

You store yours above ground? ;)

      1. Cliff(Scotts) says:

  5. Rocky (Rockford) says:

Can you say COLD and SNOW?

  6. Brandon (Hudsonville) says:

woke up at 6:00am, looked out the window and it has not stopped snowing yet here in Hudsonville. cleared the driveway twice, easily 4-5 inches of new snow and its still coming down. snow blower was weezing, hope it makes it through the next 2 days so I can get it in for repairs!

  7. Vincent(N.E.Kent CO) says:

My low so far here is -5.3. Now at -4.4 with no snow falling.

  8. Nathan (Forest Hills) says:

Nice band of lake effect south of Muskegon to Holland and even past Grand Rapids. Looks like Allegan has picked up a nice amount of snow today. The snow has been falling here for a while now too, but I have no idea if I can measure it with all of the blowing snow.

    1. jj.jenison says:

That band has been sitting right on top of me for a while now. Can hardly see the tree line about .5 acres out back. Picked up over 2 inches in the past 3 hours.

      1. Nathan (Forest Hills) says:

Yeah, and it appears this may be the case all night.

    2. Travis Ulberg (West of Martin, Allegan County) says:

Hasn’t stopped snowing since 3PM Saturday. Over 20″ now.

      1. Brenda (Otsego) says:

  9. Nathan (Forest Hills) says:

Bill when you say the average temperature in the US this morning is 12 degrees, is that also including Hawaii?

    1. Brian(Grandville) says:

      Nice Nathan.

    2. Mike in Hamilton says:

      I would assume CONUS…

    3. DF (SE Mich) says:

Guam? We also technically own Japan…

        1. Nathan (Forest Hills) says:

          Thanks for the information guys!

    4. Bill Steffen says:

Continental (actually contiguous) U.S., though Alaska’s cold would more than balance Hawaii’s warm.

      1. Nate says:

Bill, is there a link to where I could find a consistently updated average temp for the contiguous U.S.? It’s really interesting.

  10. Matt (Spring Lake) says:

It has been snowing hard all day here. Webcam of Spring Lake: http://www.springlakeyachtclub.com/OurClub/WebCam.aspx

  13. Bobby (Ada) says:

Snowing HARD here in Cascade… report from my house in Grandville is 7.5″ so far today, but i’ll confirm that when I get out of work in a couple hours :)

    1. jj.jenison says:

Looks like im over the totals already for the expected snow at 3 inches for tonight(change over from late afternoon prediction at 6). Ottawa and parts of Allegan are getting hammered with snow. Might see at least 3 more just tonight. Im surprised NWS didn’t change anything from the Aviation update they did around 7pm.

  14. Bnoppe says:

Anyone have a link to records I think some could fall

    1. DF (SE Mich) says:

All are here for the climate stations. Not all the weather stations.

  15. Ben (Charlotte MI) says:

No way to measure snowfall at my place due to severe drifting, but I would guess 14 or so since Saturday night. I have one drift that is approaching 5 feet deep. I might actually abandon the driveway from the house to the barn and forget about it until spring.

  16. Mike (Lenawee) says:

-16 here in Adrian. The wind chill in Blissfield is 40 below. Toledo’s all-time lowest temperature is 20 below. Looking good to break that.

      1. Jack says:

Love it…..BILL !!! Keep of The GREAT Work !! And of Course Stay CUEDD!!!! ;-)

        1. Nathan (Forest Hills) says:

          Hey, about those T-shirts…

  18. Well to give you an idea how bad 131 is right now…a round trip from Byron Center to Kalamazoo back to Byron Center takes 3 1/2 hours!! When usually in the summer it takes a little over a half hour. Lots of blowing and drifting especially southern Kent into all of Allegan County. Me and a few other cars were pulled over on the side of the highway on northbound 131 right at the entering Allegan County sign due to heavy snow and whiteouts. Semi drivers need to SLOW DOWN because when they go by there is about a 5-10 secind span where you loose sight of where you are driving

    1. Bobby (Ada) says:

Question is… how do you make it to Kzoo and back in a half hour in the summer? it takes 40 mins to get there going 85, let alone round trip haha.

      1. Brian(Grandville) says:

Depends what part of Kzoo. I use to drive there every day, from Byron Center to downtown Kzoo. In good weather it averaged 45 minutes.

        1. You can do it’s in a half hour to west main st exit 38A. Trust me.. I drive it once or twice every few weeks

        2. Nathan (Forest Hills) says:

And if you speed it can be quicker! Is that your secret Kyle?

        3. Haha it doesn’t hurt! But I average 75 MPH

        4. Nathan (Forest Hills) says:

That was supposed to be a joke haha… I guess it’s true! I know my weather predictions are good, but apparently that’s just half the story.

  19. Michael g (se gr) says:

It’s been snowing steadily here for a few hours now, not heavy but still piling up. Winds are steady too, not as gusty as earlier. Temp hasn’t budged from -1* since about 4:30.

  20. DF (SE Mich) says:

-14 here now. Slim, remember when we waiting for a hard freeze? :)

Flint crashed and is now -11 in just a few hours.

  21. Zach says:

What happens when you boil water, then throw it into the cold Kalamazoo air…

    1. Mike (Mattawan) says:

Yeah I actually tried that an hour and a half ago… It WORKS and its pretty “cool”

  22. Cliff(Scotts) says:

Radiation in the snow in St. Louis!?!? Ohh noooo

  23. Nathan (Forest Hills) says:

    1. Bobby (Ada) says:

Last time i looked at the Jackson Observation, they were reporting -16 with a Wind Chill of -43 BRRRR!

    2. jj.jenison says:

“EVERYTHING ELSE LOOKS LIKE IT IS ON TRACK” Our area be over the 1 to 4 inches range in likely the next hour or so for their night prediction. Unless the LE is going to start slowly diminishing over the next few hours think they may need to bump those totals up a bit. Will see if they catch on or maybe im the fool here lol.

      1. Nathan (Forest Hills) says:

It’s kind of hard to measure the snow though with these strong winds (which I believe are coming from the Polar Vortex!!). I would imagine a couple of areas in the heavier bands will see higher totals than anticipated, especially if one stays over you for a long period of time… Which appears to be the case for you.

        1. Cort S. says:

          Information on the polar vortex:

      2. Brandon (Hudsonville) says:

jj completely agree- the winds seem to have remained steady and these band are not shifting. have seen around 6 inches since this morning….another 1-4 tonight? maybe more? seems like it should be worth a mention. Also not seeing the stronger wind gusts like earlier today.

  24. Mike (Mattawan) says:

It is -10 here in mattawan right now. The flakes are falling (still!!). Roads are mostly snow covered and visibility is pretty low as well (down to below a 1/2 mile at times). Definitely feels like winter! Drifting is also pretty bad in spots where plows
Have not hit for a while but the snow isnt drifting as bad as it was earlier today. My car definitely hesitated before starting up today when I was leaving work this evening. Im just glad it fired up so I could get to my (fairly) warm home. Heater is working hard to keep my home at 68 and it is several degrees colder near the windows. Also a note to those that have doors leading outside that dont have a great seal: covering the bottom crack with a blanket or towel can really make a difference with the temperature near the door by your feet.
Gotta love this pure michigan weather!
    Stay warm and safe everyone!

  25. Debbie (Jenison) says:

It is really coming down here since about 6. Got done snow blowing the driveway at 6. Probably have about 3 inches since then. I think I have about 15-17 inches out there. Hard to tell with the drifts.

    1. jj.jenison says:

In the same boat. :) I think the totals are reaching closer to 18 inches with 2 to 2 1/2 feet drifts. Like you said though its hard to tell.

  26. Imthemom (just n holland) says:

Twister is on AMC right now. This is a good night to watch it and dream of spring.

  27. ER From GR says:

Stuck here at the bank tonight, it is truly FREEZING outside. Planning on having a good ol’ steak dinner when i get home tonight to keep warm. Also planning on trying the boiled water trick tonight!!! I just love knowing in less than two months i will be getting married, and boarding a cruise ship for the Caribbean!!! Oh yah, cant forget a sprite or two tonight for INDYY!!!

    1. Bobby (Ada) says:

WOOHOO!!!! X2 ↑↑↑↑ Florida this weekend!

    2. Jennifer K (NE GR) says:

I left that bank in 2011but we might know each other .small world!

  28. Currently -8 and heavy snow here. Windchill of About -20 to -25. It’s never ending!

  29. Nathan (Forest Hills) says:

Wow Bill, that is a huge winter coat you have on there! Kyle just posted a pic on Facebook. Windchill is really dropping here, now well below -20 with some steady snow still. I think I’m headed for bed, I’m feeling a little sick.

  30. Jim S (Saugatuck Twp) says:

00Z GFS showing a pretty decent rain event by late Friday.

    1. J-rod says:

      That would be a mess.

    2. SlimJim NW GR (1) says:

While its still a long ways off the 00Z GFS shows a real big warm up around January 23rd can anyone say January thaw!!!
its been hovering between -1 and -2° all night long here and still getting a steady light snow with that just below zero temp.

  31. Steve (Grand Ledge) says:

Are we looking at Wednesday school closing too because of WC?

  34. Travis Ulberg (West of Martin, Allegan County) says:

4.5″ for the day. 20.5″ since Saturday afternoon. I have a temp of -5 with light to moderate snow.

    1. Jacob G. says:

I think the NAM had it pretty good handle on the system snow and lake effect for your area. Lot of people knock the NAM but I personally think it handles the lake effect better than GFS or Euro.

      1. Travis Ulberg (West of Martin, Allegan County) says:

The NAM was the only model that got the snowfall totals right for the New Years Day snow as well. It just seems like the NAM takes a little longer to get the track of the storms figured out.

  35. Rad (Jenison/Hudsonville) says:

Man this LE just wont let up over here. UNCLE!

  36. I see the forecast for Gratiot county shows winds increasing this afternoon to 15-25 with gusts to near 40mph (patchy blowing snow) If anyone from the NWS has really been in Gratiot county before they would know that with fresh snow cover and a lot of it, 40mph will bring a whole lot more than patchy blowing snow. outside of the Lake shore areas Gratiot with it’s huge amounts of FLAT farm lands is one of the most windy locations in lower Michigan. Now perhaps the winds won’t be that strong but if they are then I’d suspect we might need a weather advisory for blowing snow. Might just be the auto generated forecast but that was interesting that with those forecasted winds that they would drop the advisory this morning when many of our rural roads are drifted shut.

  37. Records (Breckenridge MI)
