cfsv2   Click on the image to enlarge or click here.   The latest CFSv2 long-range outlook keeps us cool for February and March (see link)…then near normal for April – June.  It has a tough in the East with WNW flow.   Monday morning 52% of the Lower 48 states had a snow coverHere’s U.S. snowcover (you can see the ice starting to form in the Great Lakes).   Here’s photos of the snow here in West Michigan.  In the U.P. Painesdale is up to 56″ of snow on the ground and Delaware has had 165.5″ for the season.  Here’s WOOD’s Closing List (up to 676 closings as I write this).   At 11 PM, it was 20 deg. warmer in Fairbanks AK than in Grand Rapids MI.

Season snowfall thru midnight and last year’s total thru Jan. 6 in (  ):  Grand Rapids 50.2″ (9.4″), Muskegon 59.1″ (8.7″) Lansing 31.8″ (5.2″), Kalamazoo (WMU).

Overnight model data:  NAM (caribou) – Snow showers continue more on than not thru Tue. night for G.R. with another inch and a half at the airport (more as you go west)…the temperature at noon is 7.2 with a 22 mph west wind (that’s still a wind chill of -14)…the temperature slowly goes up to 13.2 at 10 pm Tue., 14.1 Weds. AM and 20 Weds. PM.  Thurs. AM we clear out and we go back down to -2, but with only a 4-5 mph wind.   We get a little light snow Thurs. night and we’re up to 32 Fri. AM.   On the GFS (caribou) we have just shy of an inch of snow during the day at the Ford Airport with a noon temp. of +6 and a 22 mph wind…we’re up to 10 deg. Weds. AM and 18 Weds. PM, with the wind down to about 10 mph on Weds.  That model gives G.R. 0.41″ of rain Friday night with temps. of 33-36.  That a close call for some nasty freezing rain.  the warmest day on the GFS (caribou) is 38 on Sunday, then mid-upper 20s on Monday.   The European has an inch – inch and a half tops for G.R. (airport) Tues. and Tues. night, another inch or two at the most Thurs. night, then 0.37″ of rain Friday night into early Sat. with temps. from 33-38.   Roads could get slick Sat. night as temps. go back into the 20s.

Also…River-Effect Snow??   Terminal fire knocks out power to 190,000 in Canada.  Aftn. HIGH temps. MON:  32 Waco TX, 39 Laredo TX, 36 Houston TX, 37 New Orleans, 35 Mobile AL, 40 Pensacola FL, 18 Huntsville and Muscle Shoals AL, 17 Memphis, 10 Harrison AR, 1 St. Louis, 2 Cincinnati, -10 Indianapolis, -12 Chicago, -18 Wausau WI – coldest wind chill I saw was 63 at Grand Marais MN.    It could be worse, the high Sunday at Verkoyansk, Russia was -47F.

It would surprise me if any Muskegon county schools be open tomorrow, it is very slippery out there! If there are any open it just means they don’t care about students and staff safety

John, at the same time, we as a society now days aren’t as strong as we use to be years ago. Roads are slick for sure, but if all of us just slow down, and keep a safe distance from the vehicle in front of us, we will be just fine. Unfortunately it is hard to comprehend safe driving skills for many on the roads today. I watched a van get closer and closer in my rear view mirror yesterday, before finally going in the ditch to avoid me. Lucky for me I guess.

        That is very true!
