Winter Weather Advisory Ends

February 4th, 2014 at 2:04 pm by under Bill's Blog, Weather

advisory   12:55 pm Weds.  22″ of snow on the ground in G.R., that’s the most since 1979.  The record is 27″ after the blizzard of Jan. 26, 1978.   There may be  a few lingering flurries this PM, but the snow is pretty much over.  We should see breaks and thin spots in the clouds.  Winter Weather Advisory has expired (it will run until 4 PM for counties that border Indiana).    Here’s the Tues. morning NAM (caribou) and GFS (caribou) forecast snow totals:  Grand Rapids 4.1″, 4.2″…Lansing 5.1″, 4.4″…Muskegon 3.9″, 2.4″…Kalamazoo 5.8″, 5.9″…Jackson 7.7″, 4.8″…Pontiac 6.5″, 5.0″, Big Rapids 3.2″, 2.4″, Mt. Pleasant 4.6″, 2.9″, S. Haven 4.8″ (NAM only), Holland 4.2″ (NAM only).  Those numbers weren’t too bad…looks like the reports we have are 2-5″ with the least in Oceana and N. Newaygo Counties.

Here wave clouds (Kelvin-Helmholtz clouds) in E. Germany last weekend.   A summary of record temperatures in January.

Rocky and Indy do you think school CLOSINGS are possible in kent?

    1. INDY says:

Brett schools are about done being close the roads will have to be really slick I say no!! But stay tuned that snow is moving more north!! I think later on will be a better thought!!!! INDYY

    2. Rocky (Rockford) says:

I think it will be a close call, however most of the major districts should be open! If however we get closer to the 6+ inch mark with wind vs 3 or 4 inches, some may need to seriously consider closing! I agree with INDY – stay tuned and we will know in a few hours!

    3. John (Grand Rapids) says:

I think it depends how much we get, although it will take a lot to close schools that are at or past the limit.

  2. INDY says:

Hey DF u getting any snow in A2 right now? INDYY

    1. DF (SE Mich) says:

      Not yet.

  3. Uncle Sparkee says:

    1. Brett says:

      Where do you ice fish?

  4. suehelen says:

    It hasn’t happened yet.

  5. Mike Geukes says:

Cannot believe I saw a bunch of Robins today in Grand Rapids, Michigan. We have 18 inches of snow on the ground. Season snowfall so far is 82.3 inches.

    1. Brenda (Otsego) says:

I’ve heard of other robin sightings this winter. Guess they never made it south.

  6. Rocky (Rockford) says:

The SNOW is filling in and moving right towards us! Get ready to ROCK people!

  7. Rocky (Rockford) says:

I hope you are right Rocky.

      1. Rocky (Rockford) says:

Rock On SW Kent! SNOW, SNOW and more SNOW!

  8. Craig (Holland North Sider) says:

I am just glad we are on the northern edge of this storm. Sounds like central and northern Indiana are going to get nailed. Serious spring floods here we come.

    1. SlimJim NW GR (1) says:

I think we might have that issue already.
      SlimJim

  9. Jack says:

    1. Rocky (Rockford) says:

  10. John (Grand Rapids) says:

WOOD’s 5PM forecast says only 1-3” for anyone in the advisory areas… Anyone else think this is a little low?

    1. Nathan (Forest Hills) says:

Yeah one inch is very low. It seems like a 2-4 event to me.

    2. Rocky (Rockford) says:

      3 to 5 inches baby!

      1. John (Grand Rapids) says:

I was thinking 3-5” as well.

      2. Jim S (Saugatuck Twp) says:

I am going to predict 3.5″ for me. I think the dry air will knock down some of that moisture.

    3. Dan (Rockford) says:

You think that’s bad… I just drove past the WZZM weatherball and it wasn’t even blinking.

      1. Rocky (Rockford) says:

        LOL!!!

    4. Bill Steffen says:

Ahem – that’s snow on the ground by Daybreak – and I said “Daybreak” twice. We’re going to add another 1-2″ at least after daybreak. In my forecast focus graphic I have 2-5″ with the least in Oceana Co. and the most south of I-94.

      1. Rocky (Rockford) says:

ROCK ON BILL! Keep the facts about the COLD and SNOW coming!

      2. Brenda (Otsego) says:

Some kids just don’t listen. ;)

      3. John (Grand Rapids) says:

        Must’ve missed that :) Thanks.

      4. Nathan (Forest Hills) says:

Bill just mentioned that again at 6:16 btw so that definitely clears up the confusion

  11. Rocky (Rockford) says:

The storm is still developing and heading right at us!!

  12. Rocky (Rockford) says:

I love the temperature pattern that we are in currently! No temperatures above 30 degrees for days on end! It does not get any better than that!

    1. fixxxer says:

Lol i cant wait till we warm up. Your mom misses you hiding under her bed. Face it, winters days are becoming numbered.

  13. Barb says:

We need to moderate here at some point since spring IS coming.

    1. Rocky (Rockford) says:

Yes and by mid March you might see mid 30′s and maybe by the end of March you might actually see a 40 degree reading! I am planning on skiing in lower MI in April this year! I can hardly wait! Boyne Mt here I come!

      1. fixxxer says:

God rj are you a retard.

        1. Michael g (se gr) says:

I thought folks like yourself were offended by the word “retard”?

  14. Rocky (Rockford) says:

The SNOW storm track is still forecast to be headed right towards lower MI! I love it!

  15. Mark (East Lansing) says:

This blog is getting to the point where I don’t even have to look at the forecast. Not because of the insight of the bloggers, but rather all I have to do is look at WHOM is posting comments. LOL

    1. INDY says:

      WHO WOULD OF THOUGHT!!!!! INDYY!!

      1. Mark (East Lansing) says:

        Atta boy!

        1. INDY says:

          Lock your doors!! INDYY!!

      2. Rocky (Rockford) says:

        Who knew?

        1. steven (Derby Lake) says:

          Who didn’t?

  16. Ethan G says:

What are the Chances of me having school tomorrow if I live in Forest hills.

    1. Nathan (Forest Hills) says:

Ethan do you happen to be in 10th grade…

    2. fixxxer says:

You damn kids are the laziess ive ever seen. All you want are snow days. Heres a hint, go to school or suck it up and prepare to go most of the summer.

      1. John (Norton Shores) says:

Do all you come on here to do fixxxer is criticize people? Smh

        1. fixxxer says:

Yeah when all these kids do is be lazy.

        2. INDY says:

          YUP! INDYY!!

        3. Nathan (Forest Hills) says:

Fixxxer you think I’m lazy!! I don’t need to explain, but I’m definitely not lazy. And I wouldn’t be talking lol…

      2. Michael g (se gr) says:

If you don’t go to school an get edumacated you’ll end up like fix.

    3. John (Grand Rapids) says:

      Very high.

    1. That has to be one of the most unrealistic sites in the world. I know people who look at that site and think its right. I would suggest never listening to what that website says about at snowday, its soo inaccurate

      1. John (Grand Rapids) says:

I have to agree, sometimes I check it just to see how wrong it is… one of the FHPS snow days was at 0%.

  17. Ethan says:

Fixxer is obviously not intelligent, and is obviously lazy.

  18. Uncle Sparkee says:

Yes very hi! Your ol uncle sparks lives by it! Oh my purple light test worked, I’m no longer seein double, just some dark round circles when I’m in natural light. But that could be the med giggle grass. I’m fryin fish and your ol aunty Edna’s making a apple pie. Mmmm the love shack is smellin reeeel nice.

    1. Jack says:

Hey Sparks , I used to Have a OLD POSTER that SAID, ” There is nothing Wrong with ME Today!!! That a Few Joints Wouldn’t CURE”"”"” Stay Cued , Peace 2 The OLD BACKWOODS & The OLE LOVE SHACK !!! ;-)

  19. Just to clarify, people from south haven to lansing north will only get 2″ by daybreak, not even close to close school. The only possibility may be south of 94 especially Branch and St. Joseph County. I think we have had our share of snowdays

  20. Jim S (Saugatuck Twp) says:

18Z GFS and NAM has lowered my snow totals just a bit. It is showing about 4″ for me….my guess is we end up with a similar snow total to what we had Saturday.

    1. Rocky (Rockford) says:

      Imagine that! Who knew?

  21. Cort S. says:

Great example of virga (precip drying up before reaching the ground) seen on radar:

    http://weather.cod.edu/satrad/nexrad/index.php?type=IWX-N0Q-1-48

The donut hole / bubble. As the hole shrinks, that signifies the snow reaching closer and closer to the ground before evaporating. When the hole goes away, that would signify the onset of snow at the radar site.

    1. Nathan (Forest Hills) says:

Wow that’s an excellent example. It’s kind of deceiving on basic Dopplar Radar though, it looks like many areas are seeing moderate snow when it’s really nothing.

    2. GunLakeDeb says:

      Oh!!! That’s really cool!!!

  22. Dan says:

Winter is just getting cranked back up. You’ve gotta love it like fixxxer and Tomkap!

    1. Rocky (Rockford) says:

      + one trillion!

  23. steven (Derby Lake) says:

Cancellations are starting to come in

    1. Brian(Grandville) says:

That’s hilarious, hasn’t even started snowing yet. You would think everyone has gotten use to this winter by now.

    2. John (Grand Rapids) says:

      Where do you see cancellations?

      1. steven (Derby Lake) says:

        Ch.8 home page

        1. John (Grand Rapids) says:

No schools closed, just a church and a business.

  24. INDY says:

Tomkap says 45 more days of winter!! INDYY….

    1. Rocky (Rockford) says:

      + one trillion!

      1. Jack says:

        Lol…I’ll double That !! Stay cued…..

  25. Rocky (Rockford) says:

There is no warm air in sight! We have a TON and COLD and SNOW coming over the next few weeks. Just sit back and enjoy the ride! THE BEST WINTER EVER!

  26. Wswplz says:

I’m a little curious why my the NWS is only forecasting a whopping 1.5 inches through tomorrow, Rockford/ Cedar……next time I look it will be an inch…..we’ll I hope they aren’t correct, but they usually are close….looks like there is quite a bit of moisture south in Indiana….this system looks really far south and east…you think we will see 2-5 inches from this, as some models say???

    1. Wswplz says:

I personally don’t see much at all, I think the weekend event will end up out performing this one, at least in the GR and north areas…maybe much further south and east will enjoy some strong accums….for those who get the white stuff enjoy, as can only watch from a distance….lol

      1. Wswplz says:

So if Kzo is only supposed to see 3″ from this….then I would say us to the north are basically back to what we originally had after all the back and forth, north and south….and a WWA….really..are the winds supposed to create challenges during the commute with a whole inch of snow….sorry I’m not more positive….on occasion I sort of buy in to things when I know better….I get cranky when I don’t get my fix…and it’s close enough to tease me..

  27. Jeremy (Three Rivers) says:

It hasn’t even started snowing here yet. There’s some serious dry air issues it seems.

    1. Wswplz says:

I’m surprised you haven’t seen a few snow flakes that far south Jeremy…

      1. Jeremy (Three Rivers) says:

A few snowflakes at best. Nothing at the moment.

        1. Brad (Van Buren) says:

Same here, radar shows snow, but we have only had a VERY light dusting.

  28. Brian(Grandville) says:

Just judging by the radar loop, this storm doesn’t look very impressive for accumulating snow to much farther north of I94. Looks like it’s moving more east, when earlier it looked to be moving more north east.

  29. Rocky (Rockford) says:

GR will be seeing 3 to 5 inches of SNOW by Wednesday night! Book it DanO! COLD and SNOW ROCKS!

    1. Wswplz says:

Obliviously no harm no foul if predictions don’t come true, but what’s telling you 3-5. And if that’s your thinking for GR, what do you think you and I will get in our area….

    2. Wswplz says:

Its always interesting how many times the NWS forecast page never quite lines up with the advisory…I know the advisory is covering a large area, however you would think that the daily forecasted amount would add up to that of the advisory…not a big deal….

    3. Wswplz says:

      Hawaii 5 0…. :)

  30. Jim S (Saugatuck Twp) says:

The precip. on radar appears to be knocking on my doorstep, but I think that is not hitting the ground. Also, it keeps drying up as it gets closer. I really think my 3.5″ might be a stretch…2″ might be more like it.

  31. Ben (Ann Arbor) says:

    No flakes in AA yet

    1. Brian(Grandville) says:

      So everyone is sober tonight.
      Sorry, couldn’t resist.

      1. Ben (Ann Arbor) says:

Nope, some flakes just showed up

  32. Jeremy (Three Rivers) says:

Yay flurries finally. This storm system hasn’t produced anything here yet.

    1. Nic (Alto) says:

Heavier snow bands aren’t going to move in until early AM Wednesday. Right now its fighting the dry air. Once that air gets saturated, it’ll start coming down.

  33. DF (SE Mich) says:

    Snowing in A2 now finally..

  34. Jeff (Portland) says:

Light snow falling now here …

    1. Wswplz says:

Think the advisory time could have very easily been pushed back to around 12:00 midnight, instead of 6:00 pm for Kent…

      1. Wswplz says:

I hope to wake to fresh white snow…if we end up seeing some blowing snow, be careful everyone..

  35. Heather Muir says:

The teaser on fb says weather forecast, not twitter play. Tedious at best.
