Local   Snow showers continue, esp. downwind from the fattest part of Lake Michigan (Allegan, Ottawa, Kent) where yet another 1-4″ of snow is likely.  Temperatures, if anything will go down a few degrees this afternoon.  At 11 am, it’s 17 in G.R., but only 2 above in Chicago, 1 in Kenosha WI and 0 in Sheboygan Wi.  It’s 12 in Big Rapids and only 9 in Benton Harbor.   Also,  continued cold for the next week – though we do get a significant warming influence from Lake Michigan (not frozen over yet).  This morning at 7 am, the average temperatures for the contiguous U.S. was 11.0° – the coldest morning of this cold winter…and Grand Rapids was 16° – five degrees warmer than the U.S. average!  This morning at 8 am – 31.5% of the contiguous U.S. was below zero and 86.9% was below freezing.  The average temperature for the contiguous U.S. was 11.1°.    Waco TX breaks record already for most freezing nights in one cold season!  Here’s a tornado track map for 2013.   PECO still reporting over 400,000 customers without electricity in SE PA   Some welcome rain coming to Californiacould today. be one of the top ten coldest mornings in the U.S. in the last 50 years.   Heavy snow in Kabul, Afghanistan.   Links: Grand Rapids radar, Northern Indiana radar, Chicago radar, Detroit radar and Milwaukee radar. 1. Ned S. (East of Holland) says:

We’ve had about two inches of very light, fluffy snow this morning at 104th and Ottogan.

  2. Ned S. (East of Holland) says:

    Whoa! I was first?

  3. Michael g (se gr) says:

Something for the snow lovers to look forward to as this winter winds down over the next 4-6 weeks. Joe Bastardi says that going from a La Niña this year to a weak to moderate El Niño next year fits the pattern we had in ’78/79 after ’77/78. How does that sound captain Tom?

    1. Cali103 says:

Lol Winter does not wind down in Michigan until Mid-April.

    2. Michael g (se gr) says:

And for everyone who thinks a big warm up is immement, GFS ensembles would beg to differ….

      1. Cali103 says:

Don’t be a debbie downer. You realize the models and Joe Bastardi are not right every time.

        1. Cali103 says:

But I guess it is better to have below temperatures in the winter than in the spring and summer :)

        2. Michael g (se gr) says:

          I’m not a downer,I LOVE it!

        3. Cali103 says:

    3. Wswplz says:

I didn’t know we were experiencing La Niña this year….I thought we were kinda neutral…hmmm…but I like it…..

      1. Brian(Grandville) says:

I found this earlier today explaining a recent La Nina season.
Its an hour long, but a good documentary.

        1. Wswplz says:

          Thanks B

        2. Mike M. says:

This page explains a lot, too…

Shows the actual regions of the Pacific that are measured to determine La Niña, neutral, or El Niño status.

        3. Wswplz says:

          Good read Mike M…

        1. Wswplz says:

          Which means nothing in Spanish

  4. INDY says:

    1. SW Kent says:

Sure was nice to get those 7 Blizzard warnings you predicted. Oh wait…

  5. Cali103 says:

Well at least we don’t have any big snowstorms. Praying that we get those 40s later this month.

    1. Jeff (Richland) says:

  6. Michael g (se gr) says:

NWS shows 2-4.5″ in the snowpack for the Grand River basin.

  7. Travis Ulberg (West of Martin, Allegan County) says:

1.5″ of fluff here since 4AM.

  8. Buck's Achilles says:

Anyone know how the roads are today? I have a 2 pm appointment for a haircut at Bud’s Bait and Taxadermy and I’m wondering if the 98 Sable will make it.

    1. Cali103 says:

      Better than yesterday.

    2. Wswplz says:

Lol…I’m sorry not laughing at ya…just funny where your getting your haircut…too funny

      1. Buck's Achilles says:

No worries…Bud gives the best trim in Burnips. He uses a 2 guard on the front and sides and I let the back grow just a little below my shoulders.

        1. Jenny's Snowthrower says:

Color me TURNED ON!!! Sounds like a Party in the back.

        2. Mark (East Lansing) says:

  9. kevin. w says:

Well maybe will have snow showers and flurries into May and no fruits and veggies cause all the buds will freeze up. Long winter cold summer snow starts in September…then I’m moving, just too many extremes…flood?

    1. suehelen says:

Nah. We’re going to warm up and spring will arrive on cue just like it always does. Summer will be warm maybe hot at times. Fall will be fall in Michigan. Cooler temps with sunny days with some rainy ones in between. You gotta love Michigan weather!

    2. Cali103 says:

Oh heck no! If we get snow in May or even April for that matter I’m going to cry lol

    3. fixxxer says:

Kevin needs to lay off the booze.

    4. Wswplz says:

Really…I think you should just start building an ark…then you will be prepared.

  10. Jack says:

Rock em Sock em ROBOTS HERE ::: Throw Back Theraputic Thursday !! Stay cued………. ;-)

  11. SlimJim NW GR (1) says:

Have been getting a rather good lake effect snow shower here for the last half hour or so here.

  12. fixxxer says:

Im about ready for spring. I hate winters like this. They drag.

    1. Jenny's Snowthrower says:

yeah man it’s so boring. makes me look up weird stuff online!

      1. Buck's Achilles says:

        Hey Jenny…
several months ago I heard there was a creepy poster who actually posted a photo of a naked woman on this site. What kind of sick wierdo would do something like that!

        1. Jordan (Twin Lake) says:

          Two naked women!

  13. Nathan (Forest Hills) says:

My least favorite weather is when it’s 35-39 becuase it is still too cold… yet too warm for snow. Hopefully we skip over that transition and just jump to the 40′s right away. Or we can hang into the 20′s a bit longer!

  14. Brenda (Otsego) says:

Will someone reach over and turn off that lake effect switch please? Thank you.

    1. SS (Pwell Area) says:

No doubt! Been snowing all day!

    2. Rocky (Rockford) says:

Keep the SNOW coming and coming and coming!

  15. Dan says:

SNOW and COLD! I’m loving it! We are heading into record breaking territory.
While I don’t wish for flooding in the Spring, it is neat that we are approaching the snowiest winter of all time!! History in the making!!
What about that can you not enjoy?

    1. Brenda (Otsego) says:

Well, only because the husband is working so much overtime secondary to the very snowy weather, that he’s rarely home long enough to plow our driveway or a path on our property so I can walk the dogs. If I could have those two things I’d be great with the snow! :)

    2. SW Kent says:

We are not approaching the snowiest winter of all time. We could hit #2 though.

      1. Rocky (Rockford) says:

Funny that is same thing people said 2 months ago when I said GR will be seeing 100+ inches of SNOW this season! Most people said no way and that I was crazy! WHO KNEW?

        1. SW Kent says:

Rocky….do youreallythink we will get another 40 inches of snow. BTW, arrogance is not a good trait to have. ?

        2. Rocky (Rockford) says:

      2. Rocky (Rockford) says:

I love it when the skeptics are proven wrong. It has happened about 100 times this winter already! Let’s keep the streak alive!

    3. Rocky (Rockford) says:

ROCK ON DAN! Keep up the good work!

  16. Paul m says:

I’m just worried late march there going to be a quick melt off.

  17. John (Norton Shores) says:

The GFS is hinting at a storm late next week, lots of time to change

    1. John (Norton Shores) says:

Sorry meant in a couple weeks not next week

      1. Reid Jones (Schoolcraft) says:

it only takes one and then they start falling like dominos

        1. John (Norton Shores) says:

? Was that supposed to be reply to my school closings post below? I’m confused lol

        2. Mark (East Lansing) says:

          Yes, we know.

  18. Mark (East Lansing) says:

    School is out.

    1. DF (SE Mich) says:

  19. John (Norton Shores) says:

Schools are already closing tomorrow for wind chills, wonder how many well see in this area

  20. Rocky (Rockford) says:

TomKap or should I say “FIXXXER JR” you have completely lost it! You are now whining and complaining about everything even more the fixxxer himself! We are in a COLD and SNOWY pattern with no change in sight! Get used to it!

  21. tinainvbcounty says:

With the lake effect today and increased wind. I could see some drifting again as well. I only saw mention of wind chills. Is lake effect expected along with them?

    1. John (Norton Shores) says:

1inch or less tonight of lake effect according the the NWS

  22. Rocky (Rockford) says:

Bill I love the thread title “COLD and SNOW”! Imagine that! We are entrenched in a COLD and SNOWY pattern with no change in sight! I love the temperature pattern that we are in! Keep the below normal temperatures rolling for another 6 weeks or so! Temps in the teens are perfect!

  23. Dan says:

If we kept on SW KENT with this pattern well into March, we could certainly approach the snowiest of all time. It certainly is record worthy!!

    1. Rocky (Rockford) says:

Keep the facts coming – Mother Nature may just prove the skeptics WRONG AGAIN! I love it!

    2. SW Kent says:

      I agree

  24. Dan says:

From what I have read, it looks like continued snow and cold in through next week!! Winter is not giving up, isn’t that GREAT?
TomKap absolutely loves it! There is not a temp above freezing from next 8 days and maybe more! This is what its all about!!!
If we could get one HUGE SNOW STORM that would take us over the TOP!!!

    1. Rocky (Rockford) says:

We will be seeing at least three more snow storms of 6+ inches just in the month of Feb and then SNOW well into March! BEST WINTER EVER!

  25. Brett says:

Possibility for school CLOSINGS in kent

    1. Dan says:

No, the snow days are all used up. All schools will be open, Brett!

    2. Rocky (Rockford) says:

Definitely possible, however I would say it is unlikely! As of right now I would say about a 10% chance!

    3. John (Norton Shores) says:

Probably not for Kent since the wind chills for Kent county schools have to be -30 or below but surrounding counties might have a better chance

      1. gostateorgohome (zeeland) says:

Ottawa county schools close if the wind chill is -15 or lower.

        1. Rocky (Rockford) says:

          wimps :)

        2. John (Norton Shores) says:

Muskegon county is with win chills between -15 and -20 below

        3. John (Norton Shores) says:

  26. Rocky (Rockford) says:

One more map for FIXXXER JR! Get used to it! Feb temp outlook!

  27. Dan says:

Jack: Cue up the song, Mother Nature from the Guess Who!
It is a classic! “She’s getting us all”

    1. Jack says:

Here Ya CUE, Dan::: Stay Cued !! Peace…… ;-)

  28. Rocky (Rockford) says:

It looks like another FANTASTIC weekend for winter sports! Get outside and enjoy the weather people! The trails are calling my name! SNOW, SNOW and more SNOW!

  29. gostateorgohome (zeeland) says:

But, I believe with the advisory only going till 10 am, I could see possibly quite a few schools delayed

    1. SS (Pwell Area) says:

I was thinking the same thing!!!

  30. MaryCBWyoming says:

I don’t know about you, but it’s been snowing pretty good all day here in Wyoming. I haven’t been outside as I work at home, but I’m looking out the window all day. Told my son to tell me how much snow is on his car when he walks the dog later. My guess is about 3 inches.

    1. Rocky (Rockford) says:

      Sounds GREAT! Keep it coming!

  31. Michael g (se gr) says:

Hey, I know. Let’s have a big debate about which schools will be closed!

    1. Rocky (Rockford) says:

Good idea :) I will say no schools will be closed in Kent County!

      1. John (Grand Rapids) says:

I agree, although we should consider that while schools MUST close if the Wind Chill is -30, many close at -15.

      2. fixxxer says:

No one cares what you think rj.

    2. Brian (Grandville) says:

Or we could do like we use to when we were in school and wake up in the morning and turn on the radio to find out.

      1. Sandy(Hudsonville) says:

That is what we used to do.

    3. Mark (East Lansing) says:

      That’s awesome.

  32. fixxxer says:

If it werent for this persistant damn lake effect the sun would be out. We need a good thaw and soon.

    1. Rocky (Rockford) says:

If it isn’t the whining, complaining fixxxer himself. We really appreciate your uplifting and brilliant comments! Wow!

    2. Mark (East Lansing) says:

We were lucky here. Some snow but also a lot of sun today. Helped to clear the roads.

  33. I got 1.6″ of snow today, bringing my season snowfall to 93.6″

  34. steven (Derby Lake) says:

Is Sturgis schools closed because of weather already or mechanical problems?

    1. John (Norton Shores) says:

Closed because of predicted wind chills, it’s on their website

      1. John (Grand Rapids) says:

Wind chills are supposed to be -20 to -25 at daybreak for them, so it makes sense.

  35. Dan says:

Allegan county, Barry, perhaps Kzoo county closings and delays. possible delays in Ottawa County. Montcal Muskegon open and Kent open. What do I win if I’m right? Anamometer? A tour of the nws at GRR?

    1. steven (Derby Lake) says:

I haven’t been out today but Montcalm and Ionia would almost be a given. It’s been quite windy but it has diminished some compared to earlier.

    2. John (Norton Shores) says:

Muskegon would not be open with wind chills of -15 below, Muskegon county schools close with wind chills of -15 to -20 below

      1. John (Norton Shores) says:

But well see you could be right, somebody told me that Muskegon county schools are being very cautious now since they are on the edge of having to make up and they will now only close in extreme situations

    3. Jack says:

You Win a ” Free Beer Tomorrow Coupon” !!! Good Luck trying To Use IT Though……LOL….Stay Cued…DANO…. ;-)

  43. Ned S. (East of Holland) says:

110.1 inches of snow so far this winter in Holland. We could reach 125 inches fairly easily I would think.

    1. Rocky (Rockford) says:

My prediction for Holland is a whopping 150 inches! Enjoy all of your SNOW! There is nothing better than COLD and SNOW!
