Winter Weather Advisory

March 1st, 2014 at 7:25 pm by under Bill's Blog, Weather

advisory   There’s a Winter Weather Advisory for Ottawa, Kent, Ionia and Clinton Counties to the south until 4 am for 1-4″ of new snow…amounts in general will be a little higher south toward Indiana.  Interesting fact, today we set a record for the most snow ever on the ground in G.R. in the month of March…the old record was 15″ and we’re at 18″ today and probably adding an inch or two to that tonight.  We will continue to set daily records for most snowcover on each date into at least next week.   Also, wave crashes into restaurant in California.   Four injured as chairlift at ski area falls104-car pile-up near Denver.   Hail accumulated in a thunderstorm near Los Angeles.  In the last 72 hours, 42″ of snow has fallen at Charlotte Lake in Fresno County, CA.    San Francisco has picked up 3.77″ of rain in just two months of 2014,  exceeding last year’s rain total (3.38″).

I wonder how much we will get tonight. I was surprised at only a couple of inches last night.

    1. Rocky (Rockford) says:

      2 to 4 inches!

  4. Rocky (Rockford) says:

ROCK ON! COLD and SNOW rules!

  5. Sandy (Hudsonville) says:

We might as well break all the records. But really I am ready for spring to come!!

Spent 4 hours working on widening/de-icing the driveway today. I dont mind winter but this is crazy!

  9. Nathan (Forest Hills) says:

The only positive news is that it’s March first… Unless you are still enjoying the snow I guss. I don’t mind the snow but it is getting kind of boring now. We need thunderstorms!

    1. Wswplz says:

Yes, I’m really looking forward to our first good light show, as they are amazing. In do enjoy different weather phenomena , but thunderstorms are first on my list.

A friend was walking her dog along the Thornapple Trail, and came upon an ice fisherman down on the river – she asked him how thick the ice was, and he said THREE FEET!! If we get a fast melt bringing up the water levels to where those big ice slabs break free – they are going to cause some serious ice jams. The thickest ice I’ve ever seen on a reasonably-fast river like the Thornapple is maybe 6″.

    1. Brian(Grandville) says:

How much is out on the lake?

    2. John (Norton Shores) says:

And we don’t even have that much snow on the ground yet I think there is a lot of snow but now I think there’s a lot of ice WOW three feet of ice is incredible amount of ice!

    3. Michael g (se GR) says:

Can’t say for sure, but that seems like a fisherman’s exaggeration. Only about 12″ on the Grand, which is generally slower moving.

      1. Brian(Grandville) says:

I think if he didn’t have a gas powered auger, he’s full of it.

  11. Brent - Zeeland says:

Starting to see a lot of Robins in the area. Is there anything I can feed them?

    1. Jack says:

BRENT, I’ve Posted this Before., But I Found it a Good place To Start . God Bless…. & Stay Cued….. ;-)

      1. Lisa (Caledonia) says:

Thanks, Jack! I don’t mean for this to sound snarky, because I’m being sincere: It’s nice to see that you can participate in the conversation without just posting music links all the time. :) :) I’ll check out the link because I was wondering what to feed them, too. :)

      2. Brent - Zeeland says:

        Thanks for the help Jack!

    2. Sandy (Hudsonville) says:

Black oil sunflower seeds are what they love!

      1. Lisa (Caledonia) says:

Oh good! I have some of those already.

    3. Matt (Spring Lake) says:

I saw 2 Bald Eagles this morning while walking near the lake. They were young ones.

      1. suehelen says:

We saw two Bald Eagles on our way to deliver a load of firewood yesterday!

        1. Matt (Spring Lake) says:

Sweet. What area were you in?

  12. Wayne (South of GR) says:

About an inch here south of GR….snow looks to be over Kent county and north.

  13. Cascade says:

Good thing having weather advisory for 1″ of snow with no wind. Also, turned out being a very productive day for those 2 idiots that spent all day posting about their joy of snow (yes, we get it you love snow)… snow outside, yet they devoted all day on the computer over posting and probably playing dungeons and dragons between post.

  14. Lisa (Caledonia) says:

Who is going to the Kent County SkyWarn training on Thursday?

    1. Imthemom (just n holland) says:

Lisa, my daughter and I sat in front of you at last year’s Skywarn. We’ re planning to go again. Hope to see you.

  15. Rocky (Rockford) says:

We only need about 20 more inches for the record! We can do this people! We still have about 4 more weeks of COLD and SNOW! I love it!

    1. Barb says:

Give it up, Rocky, for us and for the birds, animals, etc.

      1. Paul m says:

He won’t I’m sure he pick up 8-10 inches of snow over the weekend.
Third week of March the melting will start.

      2. Sandy (Hudsonville) says:

Is there a dance we could do to make the snow stop?? :)

        1. Matt (Spring Lake) says:

I used to do a “snow dance” to get it to snow. lol

  16. Barry in Zeeland says:

Another massive pile up in Denver? Probably not stats for it, but I am curious if this winter has had the most car pile ups ever around the country. I can’t remember seeing this many before. It seems like almost daily there is one somewhere, yet some peoples keep right on rooting for more winter. I would bet they would think otherwise if and when they end up in one of these piles ups. What really sucks is everyone gets to pay more because of them, even if your not in one.

  17. Nathan (Forest Hills) says:

    In case you forgot…

  18. Ben says:

Do seasonal snowfall totals stop at the end of the meterorological season (March 1) or do they carry through to Spring/Summer?

Also – a request for Bill, can we track how close we are getting to #1? I have to guess Holland is now within a few inches and GR is off by only 15″ or so.

    1. Michael g (se GR) says:

First flake to last flake. Winter temps run from Dec to Feb though.

  19. Wswplz says:

I’ve been to that restaurant in Ca ( hit by wave ) as it was about 10 miles down the street from my home in Laguna Beach. I’m about 90% sure that it is the Wind and Sea, they also have two more locations to the south, good food, but it is very close to the water.

Back to our weather, and from looking at the HRRR that Cort left it looks like most of the snow will be below GR soon, if a read it correctly. Nice snow earlier hear in Cedar springs, but I think we have seen the peek, at least in my area. Anyone else have any thoughts to duration….

    1. Brian(Grandville) says:

Snow looks to be done from G.R. to the north. I picked up about 2.5″ from this one. Lots of snow on the deck.

      1. Wswplz says:

I haven’t been outside since 7:30 but I would think 2″ range + / – Going to head out in a bit and will take a closer look. All in all, pretty much as advertised….

    2. Jeff (Fremont) says:

I love So Cal. I go to Newport Beach almost every year. Always amazed at the amount of wealth down there, get to see a lot of exotic cars too! Last year, either the ocean was really cold or I’ve been watching too much shark week and shark shows, but I hardly was in the water. My family usually has to pull me out, because I boogie board all day.

  20. Kevin (Marshall) says:

1.8 inches of snow so far in Marshall.

    1. Wswplz says:

Does anyone else think the snow has dipped to the south of GR for anymore significant accumulations. I know a band could develop but I get the feeling our snow is just showers but folks to the south cwa may pick up additional 1-2″.

      1. Brian(Grandville) says:

Maybe a little more on the way if it holds together.

        1. Wswplz says:

I was peaking over at there radar as well, saw it was trying to head are way, well closer to you more likely. I’m kinda interested if the lake will produce some snow as wind will shift northwest Sunday morning..

  21. mr. negative says:

SE GR – 2 1/4 inches on the previously clear driveway :(

  22. Kevin (Marshall) says:

Marshall seems to be in the sweet spot for snow at Leary for the past hour.

  23. Jeff (Fremont) says:

8:20 AM, at the Muskegon Airport, visibility one mile, light snow, not showing on the radar though.
